Foreword

Ever since the ancient Egyptians symbolized the sun and creation with a lotus, flowers have held a place in art: Song dynasty Chinese art, Ottoman Empire ceramics, large scale “mille fleur” tapestries of the Middle Ages and the lush still life arrangements painted by 16th Century Northern European artists have all showcased the flower as motif. Nevertheless, within the canon of Western art, until the later decades of the nineteenth century, the depiction of the flower was largely relegated to a lower echelon of artistic endeavor and assigned to the decorative. But since the birth of modern art, the flower has been held in loftier regard, liberating the artist to explore multiple modalities including expressionism, symbolism and abstraction among others.

On view at L.A. Louver from 7 June to 1 September 2023, The Flower Show includes the work of 53 artists from different time periods, who work from divergent perspectives, and who have incorporated the floral motif to diverse ends. The scope of the exhibition ranges from an early nineteenth century botanical study by Pancrace Bessa (17711846), to recent digital works by the art collective teamLab. Through a range of mediums — painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, collage, printmaking, film and video — the investigation of formal concerns in addition to themes of interconnectivity, the environment, emotional resonance, the body and identity permeate the presentation.

6

The exhibition includes both artists with whom we have worked over our 48-year history as well those we are showing for the first time. It does not strive to be a “complete” presentation in any modality; rather we hope it is one that engages and inspires. Certainly, the exhibition has been a joy to curate. We hope that you visit L.A. Louver to see the exhibition in person, and meanwhile we happily share this digital presentation.

In bringing this exhibition to fruition we have many people to thank. First, we are most grateful to the many artists, studios, galleries and estates without whose support and enthusiasm this exhibition would not be possible. Second, we thank Stefan Bucher for his distinctive The Flower Show logo design. Third and not least we shower praise on our colleagues who have worked so hard on the myriad details associated with this exhibition: Mimi King, for the wonderful design and production of this catalogue, printed cards and social media; Christopher Pate, for keen oversight of all exhibition shipping and installation, together with Andrew Roth and Lawrence Lee; Tom Pekovitch for herculean registration work; Lauren Graber and Matthew Emonson for impeccable research and digital asset management, and not least Marie Darroch and Lydia Egan for their welcoming grace and organizational prowess.

The Directors of L.A. Louver

We extend our grateful thanks to all the artists, studios and galleries for their generous assistance and support with The Flower Show.

“Creamed leather popsicle of color and perfume, gravestone, blessing, calendar, it seems a flower can carry anything we ask. I’ve asked this flower to carry the weight of vulnerability and the power of resilience. A hard rain is always falling somewhere for someone and whether you are in the storm yourself or watching someone you love push through, the unyielding tether between burden and growth is as beautiful as it heartbreaking.”

“Outlines of petals — accentuated by the negative spaces created when the artist spray paints over small triangular weights that Gajin Fujita uses to hold the stencil drawing in place during his painting process — give form and strength to a flower that symbolizes bravery and honor. The flower is taken out of the narrative context of the larger painting, and we benefit from singular looking: flower as form.“

“I started these flowers in February 2021, after finishing my scroll of a year in Normandy. I was just sitting at the table in our house and I caught sight of some flowers in a vase on the table. Being February the sun was low casting a deep shadow on the table. I decided to draw it, the background was dark so I made a rich brown for it. After printing it I put it on the far wall facing the table. There it stayed for a few days. It looked very beautiful to me. Other people commented on it, it seemed to jump off the wall...

I think it’s what we need today. New looking fresh pictures of a very beautiful world.”
