Burgess won’t defend Duke Energy By Michael Hinman mhinman@lakerlutznews.com

Orthopedic care that’s close. So you can go far. To help you get back to your active life, we provide services ranging from general orthopedic care and sports medicine to minimally invasive hip, knee and shoulder replacements. A state regulatory agency ordered the company to refund $54 million to customers last week, yet many Duke Energy customers remain unhappy about being charged for $3.2 billion in failed nuclear power plant projects. And one candidate for the Florida House is feeling the heat. Danny Burgess, the former Zephyrhills mayor looking to replace Will Weatherford in Tallahassee, had to answer some tough questions from a crowd during a forum at Lexington Oaks recently about accepting a campaign contribution from Duke, and how that might affect his stance on what the nation’s largest utility is charging Florida residents.

Danny Burgess, left, and Beverly Ledbetter are campaigning to replace Will Weatherford in state House District 38. Both shared their views at a recent forum hosted by Lexington Oaks.

“The answer is very simple: nobody can buy my vote,” Burgess said.“I have been very fortunate to receive a lot of local support, and I have to be able to lay down my head

at night. When I make a decision, it’s for every single person in this room.” Burgess, like other Legislature candidates from both parties, accepted a $1,000 contribution from Duke on July 25. He also received indirect support from Duke through a $2,000 contribution from the Republican Party of Florida, according to state campaign finance records, an organization that has received $100,000 from Duke this year, as well as in-kind donations of $32,250. Duke customers pay a $3.45 surcharge on their bills each month to help fund the company’s closed nuclear power plant in Crystal River, as well as the cancelled nuclear power plant project in Levy County. “Duke Energy donated to my campaign,” See BURGESS, page 6

Holy Name Monastery, the home of the Benedictine Sisters of Florida for 125 years, has moved into new quarters. The new structure is much smaller and more modern than the sisters’ previous home, which is just across State Road 52.

hen the Benedictine Sisters of Florida arrived in East Pasco from Elk County, Pennsylvania, in 1889, they lived in a three-story hotel in San Antonio. This week, they’re hosting an open house at their new quarters, marking another major milestone in their 125-year history in Pasco County. The new Holy Name Monastery replaces the sisters’ former quarters, which were in a 100,000-square-foot structure across State Road 52. Saint Leo University purchased that building in October 2012, along with some additional acreage from the sisters. The purchase helped cover the cost of the new 28,000-square-foot monastery. The sisters also conducted a capital campaign for $500,000. Like any new home, there are advantages

and disadvantages. The sisters have less space. However, the old multi-story structure where they had lived since 1960 had become too large for them and too expensive to operate and maintain. Sister Mary Romana Gomez is delighted with the sisters’ new home. “I just thank God for a dream come true,” she said. “I’m just in awe,” added Sister Margaret Mary Roberts. “It’s what we wanted,” Sister Jean Abbott agreed. Visitors arriving at the monastery, at 12138 Wichers Road, will be greeted in a small lobby, which is flanked by stained glass windows representing Saint Benedict and his sister, Saint Scholastica. The chapel is large and in a place of prominence, signifying its important role in the monastery. Furnishings for the chapel were moved there from the former

West Winds Assisted Living Facility is no longer locally owned. The 75-bed for-profit facility, located at 37411 Eiland Blvd., in Zephyrhills, was sold Oct. 1 to Sabra Health Care Holdings III, which lists its address in Irvine, California, according to Pasco County property records. West Winds Prime LLC was the seller. The Palm Harbor company’s ownership has essentially managed the facility through various companies since West Winds opened in 2008. Sabra is a real estate investment trust that acquires senior citizen housing, memory care and skilled nursing facilities around the country. It purchased West Winds for $10.2 million, adding it to six skilled nursing facilities and three senior housing facilities Sabra purchased through the first half of 2014 for $141.5 million, according to its filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. It’s not clear how many facilities purchased recently, but a newspaper in Nashville reported the REIT closed on a facility there

around the same time for $21.1 million. Real estate investment trusts, or REITs, are financial securities that allow investors to buy ownership into a property or mortgage, rather than in a company that typically be found on the stock market. Investors in such projects usually earn a percentage of profit from rents or fees collected from tenants in those properties, and would receive a portion of any profits made when the REIT sells that project to someone else. Through the end of June, Sabra already owned six skilled nursing facilities in Florida, according to the company’s website. That includes a 107-bed campus in Fort Pierce the company purchased last March as part of a two-facility, $24.5 million deal. West Winds did not respond to a request for comment. This is the third largest real estate transaction in Pasco this year, behind the $36.1 million sale of the Arlington at Northwood apartment complex in Wesley Chapel, and the $16 million sale of more than 330 acres of land in Wiregrass Ranch to make way for a proposed 550-home subdivision. Both of those transactions took place in May.

Handrahan honored for his work at Zephyrhills airport The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

Zephyrhills Municipal Airport manager Mike Handrahan has been named the Federal Aviation Administration’s General Aviation Airport Manager of the Year for the Southern Region Airports Division. This is the second time since 2010 that Handrahan has received this recognition. The award is given to someone who has exhibited exceptional aviation leadership, has tirelessly worked to promote the aviation industry, or has sought to achieve efficiencies and improved productivity with their organization, according to a release. “Last year was a big year for the airport,” Handrahan said, in a release.“But I must say, I didn’t see it coming. To be recognized by your peers and colleagues is a tremendous validation, and really gratifying.” Among those accomplishments Handrahan led were the completion of more than $5 million in airport improvements, and the recruitment of two new key businesses to the airport.

The improvements include a new 100foot runway along with new taxiway lighting, fuel farm upgrades, and other aviation-friendly improvements. Handrahan also played a lead role in recruiting the Turin Aviation Group, an unmanned aviation technology testing company, to the airport, as well as Rotors of America, a civil aviation pilot training facility. Both companies service government, regional, national and international clients, and have leased airport property to meet their developing aviation market needs. “Mike brings a wealth of aviation expertise and business acumen to Zephyrhills, and is key to uncovering the great potential of our aviation-related economic assets,” said Vonnie Mikkelsen, the executive director of the Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce, in a release. “Mike has proven that, clearly, Zephyrhills is the place you want to land your plane, and your business.” The airport is located near Interstate 4 and Interstate 75, and is the only publicly owned and operated airport in Pasco County.

t was a small, but pleasant gathering of pets and their owners for the Blessing of the Pets at the HPH Hospice East Pasco Care Center on Clinton Avenue in Dade City. HPH Hospice chaplain Carl Hemphill not only blessed the pets dur-

ing the Oct. 2 ceremony, but his words lifted the spirits of their human companions, too. The blessing was a first for some of the animals gathered, but they weren’t alone. It also was the first time that Hemphill had delivered a blessing to an animal.

Like HPH Hospice chaplain Carl Hemphill, Dolly, a 6-year-old poodle belonging to Betty Walker of Zephyrhills, was having her first Blessing of the Pets experience. Dolly was a natural. While sitting in her carry harness, she bowed her head as her owner read along during the prayer.

FUN TO SPARE:

Special Olympics hosts county bowling competition By Michael Murillo mmurillo@lakerlutznews.com

If you wanted to do some bowling in Zephyrhills on Sept. 19, you probably had a long wait. Around 200 Special Olympics bowlers were knocking down pins, laughing and showing off hard-earned ribbons at Pin Chasers, 6816 N. Gall Blvd., in Wesley Chapel. Athletes from eight area middle and high schools packed the lanes in two sessions at the event, which was part of Special Olympics’ Fall Classic season. Gymnastics and softball also are part of the season, which begins with county games before moving to area competition and the state games in November. According to Judy Brunner, county coordinator for Special Olympics Florida, the athletes get excited about bowling day, which combines competition with socialization and fun. “They look forward to it for weeks and

Meeker was one of about 200 students to participate in the district portion of the bowling competition for East Pasco. In all, around 1,200 Special Olympics athletes participate in various sports in Pasco County.

weeks,” Brunner said.“They love being here, they love showing off their abilities. They especially love getting that ribbon to take home.” The event is good for family members as well, she said. Like little league or other organized sports activities for traditional students, parents come out to Special Olympics events to support their athletes, watch them perform, and see them interact in a social setting. Holland Meeker was one of those proud parents at the bowling alley. Her daughter, Maryanne, has learning and speech disabilities, and doesn’t usually enjoy social settings. But Special Olympics bowling was different, and she had been looking forward to the event. “Since (Maryanne) found out she was going to be participating, she was super excited,” Meeker said.“She’s enjoying herself greatly.” Her attitude was a welcome surprise for her grandmother, Pamela Stewart, who also came out to watch Maryanne bowl. “It’s great because she’s an introvert. Even if she’s at my house, she just sits there by herself,” she said. “Maryanne couldn’t wait to come.” Maryanne, an eighth-grader at Pine View Middle School, said she likes her classes and enjoys math in particular. But it can’t compare to her first bowling event with Special Olympics, where she stared down the pins instead of studying. “It’s fun,” she said.“I get to miss school.” Fun is what Special Olympics is all about, Brunner said. And in her 34 years with the organization, she’s seeing more people having fun over the years. When she first started, there was one season with just 250 athletes

participating. Now there are different seasons and separate events for east and west Pasco participants. In all, around 1,200 students and adults participate in Special Olympics in Pasco County. Having that many participants means plenty of volunteers are needed to keep events running smoothly. At the bowling event, Zephyrhills High School students were on hand to help. Students from Land O’ Lakes High School helped with a similar event in west Pasco. Special Olympics benefits from having around 100 volunteers for the Fall Classic season, Brunner said, and they make a big difference to the organization.

“We couldn’t do it without the volunteers,” she said.“They’re crucial, and they’re so good with our athletes. They give them a lot of extra attention and a lot of kudos, and make them feel good about themselves.” Brunner also credited the Pasco County school system with handling transportation and letting them organize events on school days, which increases participation. The result is full lanes, a lot of smiles, and a desire to continue participating in Special Olympics. Even for athletes like Maryanne, who don’t normally look forward to social events and interacting with new people, it’s something fun to mark on the calendar. “She’s already looking forward to the next one,” Stewart said.

BURGESS, from page 1

FILE PHOTO

The Benedictine Sisters of Florida lived in this 100,000-square-foot structure from 1960 until late this past summer, when they made a move across State Road 52 to smaller quarters.

MONASTERY, from page 1 snacks can be prepared. There’s also a multipurpose room adjoining the chapel. It has a wall that can be moved to create a larger chapel space when that is needed. Or, the room can be used to provide additional dining space. The monastery also has an archives room, a library, an exercise room and a laundry room. There’s a television room, too, equipped with a wide-screen television, a gift to the sisters from the Tampa Bay Rays. The living quarters are housed in a separate building, connected by a corridor that incorporates additional storage space. There are 20 bedrooms, including four guest rooms. It is easy to see that this is a place devoted to worship and spiritual growth. There’s an outdoor statue representing the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, which stands near the front of the building. At the end of one corridor, there’s a statue representing the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In the dining hall, there’s a sign that says, “Give us this day, our daily bread — an excerpt from the “Our Father, a prayer recited in Catholic masses. There’s also a painting of the Last Supper, which represents when Jesus instituted the sacrament of the Eucharist, a fundamental part of the Catholic faith. With just four guest rooms, the new monastery cannot accommodate overnight retreats. Still, Sister Mary David Hydro, who helps plan retreats, said she thinks the opportunity for hosting such gatherings may be even greater now. Many people who are unable to attend

overnight retreats may be able to break away for a day of reflection, she said. The need for retreats is there, she said. “People are hungry for spiritual life. Providing spiritual replenishment is just one role the sisters have played through the years. They lead lives of prayer and accept prayer requests from the community. They also have been instrumental in schools and on organization boards including Sunrise Spouse Abuse Shelter, Saint Leo University Haitian Mission Project, Florida Association for the Education of Young Children, Catholic Charities, Coalition for the Homeless, Hospice, Habitat for Humanity, and DayStar Hope Thrift Store and Food Pantry. Each year they provide a Thanksgiving meal to feed more than 200 people. They’ll do the same this year, but will need to adjust their logistics, said Sister Mary Clare Neuhofer, the monastery’s immediate past prioress. While a move to a new place requires adjustments, there are plenty of pluses, the sisters said. For one thing, the views are fantastic. The monastery’s back porch sits at the top of a grassy hill. Clusters of wildflower add bits of color, and the hills slope down to stands of trees below. There’s a wide expanse of sky above, and off in the distance, is a view of the steeple for Saint Leo Abbey church. There is beauty and serenity at this place, on a hill. As they were sharing their first meal together in their new dwelling place, the sisters saw a double rainbow arch across the sky. They took that as a sign of God’s blessing on their new home.

Burgess said. “Does that mean I support their decisions? Absolutely not.And I believe that we should repeal the Nuclear Cost Recovery clause. Beverly Ledbetter, the Democratic challenger for House District 38 against Burgess, said she has not taken any money from Duke. She also acknowledges, however, she has an uphill climb against Burgess, raising just $24,000 compared to his $119,000 haul. “I didn’t take money from utilities, and I don’t take money from those who do not have the same values that I have, Ledbetter said at the forum.“I am not as well funded as Danny, but I am proud of what we’ve done at the end of day.You have to look at yourself in the mirror, and you have to be proud of who you are and what you represent. Ledbetter, a retired educator with Pasco County Schools, says she supports a controversial version of the Common Core school curriculum that is being integrated into Florida schools. Setting standards is exactly what educators need, with some of what she called political pressures removed from testing. “Every teacher believes in testing, she said. “They want to assess where our students are so that we know what they have learned. The problem is that these tests are being used for things that tests should not be used for.Too much is riding on the outcome — school grades, teacher pay, graduation and promotion for our students. And it comes with a $250 million price tag, money that could be spent on vocational education instead, Ledbetter said. But Common Core takes away from the ability of local schools to tailor educational needs to their specific students, Burgess said. “I am not in favor of putting more of our education decisions in the hands of Washington bureaucrats, he said.“We need to focus on local autonomy and local control, and nobody knows the needs of our students here locally better than the teachers in our classrooms, and the administrators

at the local level. Based on his experience as a small city mayor, Burgess said he saw firsthand how important local control can be. “It is the most important form of government, and nobody knows the needs of the community more than the people on the ground, he said. But the federal government did not develop Common Core, Ledbetter said. Instead, the National Governors Association — a bipartisan organization consisting of state governors — created the standardized education system. Once kids get out of school and into the work force, Burgess says he’s optimistic about their chances. And while raising wages should be considered, he’s not convinced it’s something the government should mandate. “What we also need to take into consideration is small businesses in our communities that create jobs, Burgess said. “If you raise the minimum wage, you have to be careful that it may, in turn, have unintended consequences. It may cause employers to have to lay people off, and even may cause employers to shut their doors. Yet, raising the minimum wage could, in itself, provide a boost in the economy, Ledbetter said. “This talk about the living wage is because people who are working these minimum wage jobs now can’t afford to buy a home, and they don’t have a lot of disposable income, Ledbetter said.“Demand creates jobs, and when you have money to spend, you can buy goods and services. Low pay can also burden taxpayers, too, Ledbetter said. She cited a study about Walmart employees, who have to seek public assistance for basic needs because their low-wage jobs won’t cover it. Burgess said he wouldn’t completely discount the possibility of a state minimum wage, just that it be thought through thoroughly. “It’s a serious issue, he said,“and something that needs to be seriously evaluated.

‘The Monuments Men’ author to speak at Saint Leo By B.C. Manion bcmanion@lakerlutznews.com

The author of the book that formed the basis of the movie “The Monuments Men” will speak at Saint Leo University on Oct. 21. The 7 p.m. talk by Robert Edsel kicks off the 2014-15 University Speaker Series for the school. The presentation will take place at the Greenfelder-Denlinger boardrooms of the student community center. It is free, and the public is welcome. Edsel’s nonfiction account of a World War II military unit that saved European art treasures from Nazi looting became the basis of the film directed by George Clooney. Robert Edsel The motion picture, released last December, stars Clooney, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Hugh Bonneville and Bob Balaban. In addition to “The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History,” Edsel also authored “Rescuing Da Vinci and Saving Italy: The Race to Rescue a Nation’s Treasures from the Nazis.” He also co-produced the documentary film,“The Rape of Europa.” Edsel is the founder and president of the Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art. Besides his literary and film work, Edsel also was a nationally ranked tennis player and an entrepreneur in the gasoline and oil exploration industry. After his successful career, Edsel and his

family moved to Europe during the 1990s, first living in Paris, and later in Florence. While in Florence, he developed a passion for art and architecture, according to the “Monuments Men” film website. He was curious about how so many monuments and great works of art survived the thefts and devastation of World War II. Edsel spent 12 years researching the story of the Monuments Men, which resulted in the publication of “Rescuing Da Vinci.” His second book, which actually used the

term “Monuments Men,” was published in 2009. In January 2012, Clooney announced he would write, direct and star in the film adaptation of the book. Saint Leo University is at 33701 State Road 52, in east Pasco County, about four miles east of Interstate 75. Free parking is available in surface lots and the campus garage. Grand Horizons hosted a potluck Sept. 1 with 86 residents celebrating Labor Day. Chris Fulton told me there was so much food that if you walked away hungry, it was your own fault. Hosting this event were Mim and Terry Gardner, along with Chris and Rich Fulton. Terry and Rich were working on the hamburgers, while Clayton George was preparing the hot dogs. If this potluck was anything like we had previously, I am sure there was enough food for seconds. Chris then went on to say that after the potluck, several people stayed for a stimulating game of Mexican train, which is always fun. Some people watched the new television set that the community center recently acquired. They sure made the most of it and had a good time. Our thanks go out to all who helped. On Sept. 9, nine women attended a luncheon at ABC Pizza. This was the time for the Ladies Lunch Bunch, hosted by Joyce Bell. Joyce had only good things to say. ABC Pizza has a buffet from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., that consisted of salad, soup and several kinds of pizza. She also mentioned that the restaurant was clean and very inviting. Joyce was glad to see some new people there, and she can’t wait to see it grow more when all come back from being in other places during the summer months. Joyce went on to say that she hopes to do some exciting things in the future months.

Our thanks go to Joyce and her helpers on this Ladies Lunch Bunch. There was a lunch connoisseurs at Hellas Bakery and Restaurant in Tarpon Springs on Sept. 12. About 25 people were there to enjoy the food, the company and the shopping that they did after the meal. Sam Sage said it was quite warm that day so not too many shoppers. She also mentioned that Hellas is known for its flaming cheese that is delivered to the table, and when this cheese is placed in front of the person, alcohol is poured over it so they can create a flame. It is a show in itself. This is a Greek restaurant, and while I have never been there, it sounds charming. The people who attended were in a tremendous room, but on a platform, several steps up.Therefore, they could watch the entire restaurant below. Adjoining this room is a bakery where you can take home some goodies or have it delivered to your table. The hosts for this outing were Fred and Sam Sage. There was a farewell luncheon on Sept. 26 at Texas Roadhouse for Bill and Judy Ellsworth from Grand Horizons, according to Jenny Molinek. There were 54 of their friends from Grand Horizons attending to wish them luck, enjoy the delicious food, and thank them for all their hard work volunteering for the community. Bill and Judy are moving back to Tennessee to be closer to their family, and they will be missed by all of us. Everyone wishes them the best. Carol George and Jenny Molinek hosted this lunch. Again, our thanks go out to the hosts. They did a great job, and I am sure it was appreciated by all.
