Golf can wait – at least for now. Antiques are so much more fun. So, Laura Sanderson has put her golf career on hold, and has set up shop at Shabby Shack Antiques & Vintage. The shop’s name is a twist on the Bill Murray movie, “Caddyshack,” a classic comedy about what else - golf. But, let’s forget golf for the moment. Inside Shabby Shack, antiques and collectibles fill the floors, nooks and crannies of seven rooms. The wares are from personal family treasures, garage sales and thrift stores. “This has been a passion of my whole family, collecting antiques and unusual things,” said Sanderson. “I’m at a point in my career when it was good to put it on pause, and go for it,” Sanderson said.

She is the new owner of the former Family Treasures’ property. That long-time business on Land O’ Lakes Boulevard bought and sold coins, metal detectors and collectibles. The location also once operated as an antique shop, known as Calamity Jane. Shabby Shack, at 4312 Land O’ Lakes Blvd., is stepping out with its own sense of style. Sanderson asked her family members to “thin out” their antiques at home, and bring them to Shabby Shack. On weekends, she also combs through garage sales and thrift shops on the lookout for the one-of-a-kind item. “It’s not straight antiques. I have modern too, if it’s unusual,” she said. “I like things that have form and function.” Her favorites are art deco and mid-century Modern. In her spare time, she goes creative and

More than two decades ago, Charlotte Embody watched a televised speech by a basketball coach, who had been diagnosed with cancer and was accepting an award. The March 3, 1993 speech was uplifting, but Embody didn’t expect it to have a personal impact on her family. “Of course, it was emotional, but it didn’t become a big thing in my life,” Embody said. Over time, that would change. The coach making the speech was Jim Valvano, former head coach of North Carolina State and an analyst for ESPN. He was accepting the first Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award at the inaugural ESPY Awards, ESPN’s awards show. And, the speech would become an iconic 10 minutes of inspirational television. Valvano succumbed to cancer the following month, but his legacy continued far beyond his coaching accolades or the frequent replays of his famous speech. Valvano founded the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which has donated more

than $150 million in research grants over the years. Now, Embody has organized a speaking and book-signing event on Nov. 18 at 7 p.m., at Carrollwood Day School, 1515 W. Bearss Ave. in Tampa. The public is welcome to attend, and there is no admission charge. The school and the V Foundation will host former ESPN President George Bodenheimer, who will be talking about his book, “Every Town is a Sports Town: Business Leadership at ESPN, from the Mailroom to the Boardroom.” Bodenheimer donates all of the royalties from his book to the cancer foundation. Embody and her husband, Derek, also have donated to the V Foundation over the years, but the famous speech became a part of her family’s activities as well. Her sons attended Carrollwood Day School, and her oldest son, Billy, was given the speech to read in fifth grade. “He performed it for competitions at the bay area Forensics League,” Embody explained. “It’s such a commitment. It teaches you dedication, and determination and hard work,” Russell said. “You learn to develop a connection between you and your horse which is so good for so many other aspects of life.” The stalls are already filling up with students who board their horses there, and Russell keeps the training up even when the owners aren’t around. The students still come by frequently to bond with their horse, she said. Russell and her husband are originally from Michigan. When they moved to the area, they lived in a more traditional subdivision. But, that wasn’t the life she wanted, and having her own business on 18 acres suits her much better. Her husband is a veterinarian whose office also is on the property, and Kellan,

while only 2, already enjoys being around and sitting on horses. In a couple of years, he’ll be his mother’s age when she started taking lessons, and Russell believes he’ll take to it like she did. Owning a stable isn’t easy, Russell admits. While she already has clients whose horses get trained on a daily basis, there’s still a lot of work to do less than two months into her new career. “It’s a lot of work. It’s a big undertaking and a huge commitment, but it’s what I’ve always wanted to do, so it’s a great thing,” she said.“It’s totally worth it. Every minute of it.” The Fall Festival will run from noon until 4 p.m. It will include local vendors, face painting, a bounce house and pony rides. Tampa Bay Lightning launches regional partnership By B.C. Manion

A $6 million initiative to expand the game of hockey regionally in Tampa Bay is beginning to play out in local schools. The Tampa Bay Lightning, the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association are collaborating on a five-year program that aims to develop hockey players and provide life skills lessons to area youth. As part of that initiative, schools throughout the region are beginning to have street hockey clinics to teach children about the game. Pasco County plans to offer the program to all of the district’s fourth- and fifthgraders, said Amy Lipovetsky, program coordinator for kindergarten through 12th grade physical education. The school district was approached by Tampa Bay Lightning and was glad to participate, she said. “It fits nicely with our standards in the physical education program,” Lipovetsky said. There is a standard that calls for being able to strike with an implement, which you can do with a hockey stick. “I know the teachers are excited, and the kids like something different,” said Lipovetsky, who also oversees Pasco’s athletic programs. The Lightning plans to provide the street hockey clinics at 500 schools throughout

the region. “This semester they had openings for maybe 10 of our schools. And, we’re going to open up next semester for any remaining spots that they have,” Lipovetsky said. Additional schools will participate as openings become available, she said. When the clinics are held at a school, the Lightning sends in about five staff members to teach the game to the school’s fourthand fifth-graders. They come in for a day, and they work with all of our fourth- and fifth-graders. Generally, that takes five to six sessions. “We want it to be effective. We don’t

want any more than 60 kids out at one time, so that they can get the most out of the event,” Lipovetsky said. Some former Lightning players are involved, and the school district’s physical education teachers are involved, too, she said. “The cool thing is that each of these kids gets to walk away with a hockey stick and a voucher (for a game).” The program is going an additional step at Sanders Memorial Elementary STEAM Magnet School, the district’s only magnet school. Sanders students will learn about the concepts of geometric constructions, ener-

gy and force — through a computer game on the sport of hockey. Schools that have participated in the street hockey clinics so far include Chester Taylor and San Antonio elementary schools. Besides Sanders, other area Pasco schools scheduled to have clinics this semester are Seven Oaks Elementary in Wesley Chapel and Denham Oaks in Lutz. The street hockey clinics also take place in other Tampa Bay area schools, including schools in Hillsborough County. When it opens, Florida Hospital Center Ice also is expected to play a role in the initiative.

sidewalks. In dense shade, choose holly fern, cast iron plant, or Algerian ivy for a contrast in texture and color. Arrangement and spacing will depend on the growth patterns for each of these plants. In general, staggered row plantings will provide the quickest coverage, and a 2inch to 3-inch layer of mulch will help reduce weeds and will lock in moisture. Some groundcovers can be planted 2 inches to 3 inches apart, while others need more room, some requiring 3 feet to 4 feet of space between plants, like the native coontie. Spacing depends on the plant itself, so plan to do a little research to be sure of your desired plant needs prior to purchase. Water and fertilizer needs also depend on the plant type, so do your homework on that, as well. You can plant most any of these groundcovers anytime in our area, but do plan to add organic matter to the soil prior to planting, which helps increase water holding capacity and nutrient availability. You can use compost, peat moss, and even well-rotted manures incorporated into the soil 6 inches to 12 inches deep. Once established, most groundcovers will be low-maintenance, long-term, grieffree additions to your landscape. Pat Weaver WILL teach you how to paint Special to The Laker / Lutz News

If you want to learn how to paint, you must meet Pat Weaver — one of Pasco County’s best-kept secrets. A nationally recognized watercolor artist, Pat teaches workshops in cities across the U.S. and, in years past, taught in France, Italy, Spain, England, The Bahamas and Mexico. Pat also conducts workshops at her Dade City studio several times a year, drawing students from throughout Florida, as well as Texas, Minnesota, New York, Chicago, Georgia, Indiana and Ireland. Workshops focus on a particular subject, such as animals, landscapes, drawings and portraits, and are open to students of all levels of experience. “I am a dedicated artist and absolutely love teaching people how to paint. And when I’m home, I enjoy opening up my studio to students and sharing my knowledge,” said Pat. For beginners, Pat offers a series of four classes on Monday afternoons from 1 to 3 p.m. The series cover the basics of painting — drawing, mixing colors, design and composition. The next beginner classes are January 4, 11, 18 and 25. Pat keeps the class size small to allow for personalized instructions. Cost is $150 for all four classes. “My beginner classes are a tremendous value,” said Pat. “If a student sincerely wants to learn, I will teach them how to paint in this workshop.” The beginner Monday workshops are so popular with area residents that Pat now offers them January through June, and again September through November. “My classes are educational and are not intended to be a social event,” Pat said. “They are for people who are serious about learning how to paint, and those wanting to improve their painting techniques.” Workshops are held on Pat’s 36-acre farm in her custom-designed studio, located a few miles northwest of Dade City on Blanton

Road. Students enjoy peaceful views of rich pastureland surrounded by rolling hills. Pat has been painting for 40 years. She trained as an oil painter at the prestigious Scottsdale Artists’ School in Arizona, and studied with some of the best-known artists in the world, including Robert Bateman, John Seery Lester and Daniel Green. After 20 years of painting in oils, Pat moved into watercolor and began her career as a teacher. A past president and a signature life member of the Florida Watercolor Society, Pat has received numerous awards for her artwork in state and national competitions. She is especially known for her watercolors of dogs, and is currently accepting commissions for dogs and cats. Pat is the author of “Watercolor Simplified" and has been featured in many magazine articles. Her work has graced the covers of several publications, including School of Veterinary Medicine, The New Barker and Tampa Bay Metro. Pat’s instructional videos can be found on You Tube, and “Pet Portraits with Pat Weaver” is available on Craftsy.com. In addition to her significant accomplishments as an artist, Pat has also served her community exceptionally well. She was a Dade City councilwoman from 1987-92, Dade City mayor from 1990-92, founder of Main Street Dade City in 1987 and is a past president of the Greater Dade City Chamber of Commerce. She treats all athletes the same, Wheelock said. “She has high expectations for all of the athletes to perform at their top level.” Lisa Eckel, whose daughter, Haley plays on King’s team, is delighted about King’s recognition. “I think it’s a well-deserved honor. It couldn’t have been awarded to anyone better,” Eckel said. “She (King) spends lots of time and effort with all of the kids in the community and in the school, and she just brings out

the best in all of them,” Eckel said. “My daughter (a partner on the team) has been super fortunate to have these past three years with her (King), on and off, the soccer field. Eckel traveled with her husband, her other daughter and her sister-in-law out to L.A., to attend the opening ceremonies and to watch the games. “It was amazing. You can equate it to what we watch on TV for the Olympics,” Eckel said. She was impressed by the camaraderie she witnessed between the teams from different countries, and was excited to hear the roar of cheers and applause for Team U.S.A. when the athletes walked out, she said. The Land O’ Lakes team took part in an event that featured athletes from 170 nations competing for international medals. The games included 21 Olympic-style sports. Getting to those games took a year of preparation and fundraising, with King playing a pivotal role in both. “It was definitely a year of a lot of training, fundraising, spreading the word about Special Olympics, those kinds of things,” she said. “We raised about $42,000,” King said. “It was hard work.” But, it was rewarding in more ways than one, she said. “We met new people through the fundraising,” she said. “The community really stepped up and helped us.” When the team left for the games, there was a big send-off at Land O’ Lakes High. “The day that we left was a year to the day that we actually found out that we were going,” King said. “We trained all year. During the summer, we trained three days a week for two hours, from the end of school until we left in July. “They (team members) spent practically the whole summer together. They got closer and closer the more that we were together. The bonds became stronger,” King said.

The experiences were equally enriching for both the Special Olympics athletes and their unified partners, King said. “They both did things they never have experienced before,” she said. “For everyone, it was being away from home for two complete weeks and living with people you hadn’t lived with,” she said. They also were living on a schedule beyond their control. They would rise at 4 a.m., have breakfast at 5 a.m. and board buses at assigned times. They also had to make scheduled appearances, King said. It was busy, but exciting, too. The team and three coaches went to Disney Studios and rode through Hollywood and Beverly Hills. They went to a four-day training camp in Riverside before arriving in L.A., and while in Riverside, they marched in a parade, King said. The players were treated like celebrities. People who didn’t know them, wanted to pose for photos with them, King said. They wanted to meet the athletes that were representing Team U.S.A. “Young kids wanted balls signed, shirts signed,” King said. Being part of the World Games and winning the bronze medal were exciting experiences, King said. But, she added: “The biggest reward was to see the accomplishments of the athletes, have them gain confidence in themselves, self-esteem, being able to travel, meet other people, make lifelong friendships,” she said. No doubt the World Games were a highlight in King’s coaching experience, but she also enjoys the day-to-day work that she does. She said she coaches to win, but also teaches other things along the way, such as sportsmanship, fair play and rules of the game.

When Vicky King took her coaching job at Land O’ Lakes High School in the mid1980s, it came with the duty of coaching athletes with special needs. She embraced the role. As time went on, she found herself becoming more and more involved. Her dedication — along with the efforts of the athletes she coaches — led to the selection of the Land O’ Lakes unified soccer team to represent Team U.S.A. at the Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles, which yielded a bronze medal when the team defeated China, 2-1. The team competed in a division that has seven athletes on each side of the ball. It is a unified team, which pairs athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Special Olympics athletes play alongside partners, who are there to provide support and help. While members of the Land O’ Lakes came home clutching bronze medals, King, herself was in the spotlight on Sept. 26 when she was named the Florida Special Olympics Coach of the Year during a gala at Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando. Sherry Wheelock, president and CEO of Special Olympics Florida, said King was singled out for the award because of her passion for athletes, both with and without disabilities. “She’s been a driving force for the success of Special Olympics Florida unified sports in Pasco County, but she’s also provided and trained more than 50 other Special Olympics soccer coaches throughout the state,”Wheelock said. “She’s also been responsible for introducing new schools to this unified competition format,” she added. King also coaches a traditional team at

She began playing golf as a youngster, but didn’t become a professional golfer until age 40. She worked for more than 25 years as a golf pro at area country clubs, including The Groves and Meadow Oaks. She moved to Land O’ Lakes about six years ago. Shabby Shack is in a spot along U.S. 41 that Sanderson hopes is ready for redevelopment. “I believe in Land O’ Lakes,” she said. “I so badly want to see something happen along U.S. 41.” And, she’s eager for Shabby Shack to be a part of that transformation. On a mid-day on Tuesday, Land O’ Lakes resident Margaret Dillard dropped by to purchase a pulley. She had her eye on it for a few days. “I don’t know where you’re shopping (for antiques), but you’re getting some mighty nice things,” she told Sanderson. Dillard said she enjoys the surprises that can be found at Shabby Shack. The shop caters to all tastes from rustic to elegant, she said.

I’ve just been in awe of everything he’s done,” Embody said, referring to Bodenheimer. They met at a gala event last year, and Embody found him to be both inspiring and down-to-earth. As president of ESPN for more than a dozen years, Bodenheimer led the company through a period of expansion, including launching high definition, Spanish language and college sports networks to grow the brand. Often cited in most-influential lists of sports executives, he got his start as a mailroom clerk at the network, and left the

position of president in 2012 to become the network’s executive chairman. Embody is glad to have someone of his caliber speaking to the community, especially local children. Sometimes they need positive messages from someone other than their parents, she said. And finding the right person to deliver a thought-provoking message isn’t easy. “In this day and age, it’s really hard to find someone with good character and ethics and integrity that you want your kids to look up to,” she said. Bodenheimer is that good-character influence for both children and adults,

Embody said. Her children are in their 20s, but the speech from Valvano and the V Foundation still resonates with her family. She hopes for a good turnout for Bodenheimer at the Carrollwood Day School Theatre, and is glad to have him speak at the school her children attended, and where they were first given that inspirational speech to recite. “It’s sort of where our story really took root with the V Foundation,” Embody said. Saint Leo’s cross-country team heads to nationals By Michael Murillo

When Saint Leo University’s men’s crosscountry team qualified for nationals, coach Kent Reiber was quick to do what successful coaches do: Spread the credit around. “We have a really good coaching staff here, and everybody plays a part in making the program work together,” Reiber said. “It’s just about putting the right training together with the right athletes.” But, that doesn’t tell the entire story. It’s about the right coach as well. This is Reiber’s first year as head coach after being on staff since 2011. It’s also the first year the team captured a regional title. After making nationals the previous two years, the Lions will enter the 10K race on Nov. 21 in Joplin, Missouri, this year as NCAA Division II South Region champions. While he won’t take much credit for himself (Reiber was also named both Sunshine State Conference and South Region coach of the year), he does admit to having a specific coaching style. “My belief is running for the team. With our sport, it’s hard to have that team atmosphere, but I really encourage our kids to run for each other and find that reason within the team to run,” he said. That team spirit can affect the results on the course, Reiber said. If a runner passes a teammate, they’re encouraged to pull them to their faster level so Saint Leo can run more as a pack. And, when a pack runs up to and past an opponent, it can be mentally intimidating to the competition. That philosophy also means running less

A cross-country mission to battle polio By B.C. Manion

hen Nick Hall set out to make a bicycle trek across the country, he focused on a single goal:To inspire others to join him in the quest to conquer polio. It was a 3,000-mile ride that would take Hall up steep mountain passes, through stretches of desert, and along interstate highways and down narrow roads. He’d sleep in a tent on the side of the road, or in abandoned buildings, or behind truck stops. He’d wash his change of clothes in sinks at truck stops or convenience stores. Hall began his cross-country trek on July 14 by placing the rear wheel of his bicycle tire in the Pacific Ocean. He finished his journey — surrounded by family, friends and supporters — on Aug. 15 in St.Augustine. Along the way, he shared the Rotary Club International’s quest to eradicate polio from the face of the planet. While he was out on the road, Hall said, his grandson asked how one man riding a bicycle could help put an end to polio. Hall’s wife told the boy that as the cyclist met people along the way, they’d want to know his story, and after they heard it, they’d share it. Ironically, Hall said, this is much the same way an infectious disease — such as polio —is spread. One person has contact with another person, who in turn has contact with others. As Hall made his way across the country, Facebook posts chronicled his journey, and donations came in to battle polio from people in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and, as far away as South Dakota. The ride is over, but Hall is still sharing his story. He recently talked about his adventures at a noon luncheon meeting of the Wesley Chapel Rotary Club. “I never had a goal of covering a certain number of miles, nor getting to a certain destination by a certain time,” Hall said. There were too many variables beyond his control, he explained. He had no power over the direction of the winds, he said, and didn’t know if he’d encounter a hurricane, or when his bicycle would need a repair. “And so, my goal was only ever to keep the bike moving 10 hours a day,” Hall said. Hall figured he had an average of 15

And, for 10 consecutive days, the high never got below 100.” His longest ride on a single day was 150 miles; his shortest, was under 70. “My day would begin at usually a halfhour before sunrise. I didn’t want to waste time eating a full breakfast, not when it was the coolest part of the day. “I’d wait three or four hours before stopping, and then would eat a couple of fried eggs, fried ham, hash browns, toast. Sometimes extra servings of the hash browns,” he said. Around mid-morning, he’d stop for one of his favorite snacks: A paper-wrapped Hostess Apple Pie. It was 780 calories, and it was awesome, he said. “I was losing a lot of electrolytes. Why take salt pills when you can eat potato chips? Or, salted peanuts? “And then, I would have a couple of ice

We all need pleasure,” he said. So, he indulged in foods that gave him pleasure and also helped him maintain his weight, as he was burning around 4,000 calories a day. Hall rode through all kinds of conditions. He traveled on Interstate 10 through parts of Arizona and Texas. They couldn’t pull over very far, because there was oncoming traffic. “I had multiple, ‘Oh, fecal matter’ moments,” he said. His worst mishap occurred on the morning of July 26, as he cycling on I-10 in West Texas. He was coming down a mountain pass at a decent clip. “All of a sudden, I heard this horrible, metallic, crunching sound,” he said. “The bike came to a shuddering stop. I did not. I kept going. “I’d run over a 6-inch bolt,” said Hall, who scraped his face and knee but didn’t break any bones. The bolt hit the front tire, and the bike was missing spokes, had broken spokes and had a bent fork. A truck driver gave Hall a lift to San Antonio,Texas, for bike repairs, and Hall was back on the road two days later. Hall said the best moment on his trip came when he arrived in Palatka. At that point, he knew he was ahead of schedule. He knew he wouldn’t need to wash his clothes in a convenience store sink, or need to scout out a safe place to sleep. He said he had the satisfaction, too, of knowing people he’d met along his journey had contributed donations to help eradicate polio from the planet.

The Pasco Economic Development Council received a Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Award for Business Retention & Expansion-Single Event at this year’s International Economic Development Council Annual Conference. The award honors the combined efforts of Pasco EDC with community partners, including Pasco County, New Port Richey, and Duke Energy, to keep Applicant Insight in New Port Richey. The company is the city’s largest employer. “This award serves as a salute to pacesetting organizations like the Pasco Economic Development Council for leading the charge,” said JoAnn Carary, in a press release from Pasco EDC. Carary is chairwoman of International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and president of Saginaw Future Inc. The IEDC is a nonprofit membership organization serving economic developers. Representatives of Applicant Insight had begun to search new sites for relocation. But, Pasco EDC representatives met with company officials to discuss issues of concern, including the need for a larger facility, as well as crime and safety. Instead of relocating, the company signed a lease on a new location in New Port Richey, which keeps 100 high-paying jobs in the area. Applicant Insight has increased jobs by nearly 30 percent with plans to expand in the future.
