WELCOME TO MOORESVILLE

The Best Place to Live Our founding fathers are held in high esteem as great leaders, and over the generations they have taken on an aura of being above and beyond the average individual. It is easy to assume that special tasks are done by special people. For many, it’s easier to make that assumption because they can tell themselves that it takes someone with unique attributes, extra abilities and powers in order to complete difficult tasks and to make the changes that are important to our community and to this country. There are no special powers needed in order to become a true leader within your community. The most common attributes are accountability, responsibility and the courage to face the challenges ahead. Kirk Ballard Are our leaders so different from ourselves? In reality they are not. It is the average, ordinary individual, who takes it upon himself to be accountable and responsible, who has the power to make great changes for the better within every community. Each of us has within the power and the ability to complete extraordinary things. Every January, we come together as a Chamber and as a community to celebrate at our Annual Business Leaders Luncheon the extraordinary accomplishments of ordinary men and women. They are — someone’s husband, someone’s father, someone’s brother, someone’s wife, someone’s mother, someone’s daughter — these are ordinary individuals who take upon themselves the tasks of confronting the issues within our community. We celebrate these businesses and

community leaders who have helped make Mooresville the number one place to live in the entire state. We are made up of transplants from across the country and from across the world. The decision to move here is not just based on economics; it’s also based on quality of life issues. These families and businesses are looking at our region as a whole, and that includes our school systems. What they see are school systems filled with diversity that embrace the next frontier with new ideas. They say the only thing you can depend on is change. Our area’s success can be linked to its ability to embrace change and its ability to adapt, improvise and overcome in an everchanging economy. This is just a part of why businesses want to relocate here. For many, the starting of their own business is the fulfillment of a dream. The dream of equal empowerment and the appreciation of the individual right to self-determination were the starting points of becoming a free nation. Our new nation held promise for those brave enough to walk into the unknown. These early pioneers had a belief in their own abilities as well as their deep and abiding faith in a power greater than their own. Today, there are more than 27 million small businesses in the United States, and each year an estimated 600,000 new employer firms open. Are we still brave enough to walk into the unknown venture of starting a new business? Do we possess the qualities of our founding fathers? The facts prove that we do. We are still taking our futures into our own hands and looking to find solutions to today’s problems, undeterred by fear of the unknown. The only limitations we face may be the limitations of our own imaginations.

MOORESVILLE’S PATRIOTISM

Liberty Park Creating a More Connected Community While Honoring Veterans by Elizabeth Watson Chaney

L

iberty Park in Mooresville is getting a facelift, and at the heart of the renovations is a plan to honor the veterans that reside in the community. Plans to renovate the park have been underway since 2015. For the next three years, however, little was done to implement the changes in this city-owned recreation area, located on E. Iredell Avenue between N. Church Street and Clover Street. Then, in November 2018, Christopher Wyckoff was hired as project manager and made completing the renovation his top priority. MBI Builders won the bid, and construction began four months later in March 2019. “The design is really an urban feel that is about connectivity with our downtown area, as well as honoring veterans,” says Wyckoff. Additions 2020

include an amphitheater/bandshell structure that will replace the old little league baseball field. Mooresville has several other parks with newer sports facilities, so young ballplayers will continue to have space designated for play. Other plans include an event lawn, sodded and irrigated, with smart lights and an audio system; a Veterans’ promenade; and an entrance to the park via Church Street to supplement the entrance on Iredell Avenue. If you are standing at the Citizen’s Center on Main Street,” says Wyckoff, “you can now look directly down that entrance across what will be the Veterans’ promenade and through into the new amphitheatre.” A focal point of the park will be an original bronze statue created as a memorial to area veterans.

The piece, which was chosen by the community over the 2019 Veterans Day weekend, was selected from two finalists following a national call to artists to design it. Previously existing amenities such as the playground, walking trails, and a basketball court, all closed in past months due to their proximity to construction, will open back up when renovations are completed. There is a phase two planned. McAdams was awarded a master plan to determine the potential layout, and those decisions will be complete by July 2020. Regarding further details, including construction plans, Wyckoff says, “it’s too early in the game to put a timeline on that.” Phase one, however, is on schedule to reopen to the public in March 2020. GETTING STARTED

Open for Business Let The Mooresville – South Iredell Chamber of Commerce help launch your entrepreneurial plans by Mike Savicki

THE MOORESVILLE - SOUTH IREDELL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OFFERS A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS TO HELP LAUNCH YOUR BUSINESS.

T

hinking of starting a business in the Mooresville area? If so, the first place you need to go is The Mooresville – South Iredell Chamber of Commerce. As president of the Chamber, Kirk Ballard thrives on helping budding entrepreneurs bring their ideas to fruition. He consistently begins his conversations with individuals who express an interest in starting a small business in the area with a simple statement. “It all starts with a business plan in the beginning stages,” Ballard says before reminding the entrepreneur,

14

“The success rate for businesses is so much higher if they have a plan to follow.” And once you have a plan in place, that’s where Ballard believes the Chamber can help transform the dream into reality. “Especially in a tough economy, people feel the pull of going out on their own, but if they don’t do it correctly from the beginning and just assume people are going to run to their door and buy their product or service, my experience says even the best ideas can turn into recipes for

disaster.” Ballard believes the Chamber has the skill, experience and expertise to give necessary guidance and counsel. “What we do through the Chamber of Commerce is link entrepreneurs with the resources they need to help them get their company plan started the way our experience tells us it should,” Ballard explains. The Chamber’s Small Business Center Network provides information, training, counseling referrals, and other technical and managerial assistance to small businesses

or individuals who are interested in starting a small business. More than 80 “no fee” seminars and workshops cover a range of topics pertinent to every component of managing a small business. From financing, grant writing, bookkeeping and money management to motivating and training employees to marketing and selling goods and services, the sessions offered prove beneficial to companies across a wide variety of industries. For more than 100 years, the Mooresville — South Iredell Chamber has been committed to business development. With a strong passion and focus, it advances the civic, commercial and industrial growth of the Town of Mooresville and the South Iredell area. And the Chamber remains a proactive business and community organization focused on providing education and support. It continues to be an influential voice dedicated to economic success and quality of life, as it serves as a community champion and advocate for business. “With proper guidance, planning and camaraderie, we believe our new business friends will have a better chance of succeeding,” Ballard says. “We offer the right advocacy tools and resources that lead to self-determination and business success.”

The Back Room on fashion’s forefront Downtown men’s apparel boutique preps for expansion by Holly Becker Photography by Jamie Cowles

OWNER EDDIE WHEELER RETIRED FROM GENERAL MOTORS IN 2009 BEFORE OPENING THE BACK ROOM.

A

s ZZ Top told us, everyone is crazy for a sharp dressed man. Now, sharp dressed men in Lake Norman, and those whom buy clothes for them, are crazy about The Back Room Men’s Clothier. The only men’s clothing store in downtown Mooresville, The Back Room carries fashionable attire for any occasion. As its store motto states, the clothing store’s specialty is “All the things for all men.” From coats, suites and dress shirts and pants to sweaters, sportswear, belts and shoes, the popular men’s store stocks an array of inventory.

Growth drives expansion Business has been booming ever since The Back Room, located at 119 N. Main Street, opened its doors four years ago.

“We continue to grow (in sales) every year,” says store owner Eddie Wheeler. Thriving sales led the way for a 3,000-square-foot store expansion in late 2019, filling in the space formerly occupied by The Enchanted Olive. Part of that expansion includes the addition of a big and tall department. “It’s something the community needs, and we want to fill it. We will carry up to a size 60 and can order above that,” says Wheeler. He also hopes to add other exclusive services in the future. In addition to clothing sales, tuxedo rentals comprise 1/3 of the store’s business. “We handle the lion’s share of tux rentals in the Lake Norman area. We rent about 600-700 prom tuxedos per year,” he says. Wedding parties and special occasion events also drive tux sales.

A carrier of Jim’s Formal Wear, The Back Room Men’s Clothier also includes a private tuxedo suite for consultations and measurements. The Back Room is a second career for Wheeler, who retired from General Motors in 2009. Wheeler is not a novice to the men’s fashion industry and is now enjoying a career path that was laid down in his youth. He has ties to two of downtown Mooresville’s original men’s clothing stores. At age 18, Wheeler went to work at John Mack & Sons. And then, after he retired, he worked at John Franklin Ltd. (originally Kelly Clothing Co.) until the store closed.

THE MOORESVILLE GRADED SCHOOL DISTRICT IS KNOWN NATIONALLY FOR ITS DIGITAL CONVERSION.

O

ne of the biggest attractions in Mooresville is its excellent academic opportunities. The area is known for its stellar educational options, as it boasts some of the highest ranked public schools in North Carolina, counting among them Lake Norman High School and its feeder schools, as well as Pine Lake Preparatory, a highly ranked North Carolina Charter School in Mooresville. Mooresville is also home to the Mooresville Graded School District, which is known nationally for its digital conversion.

Dr. Mark Edwards, the former superintendent of the Mooresville Graded School District, was named the 2013 AASA National Superintendent of the Year. Upon his retirement in August of 2016, he was succeeded by Dr. Stephen Mauney. Mauney has spent his career at MGSD and was part of the district’s leadership team during the implementation of the district’s nationally recognized Digital Conversion. Mauney has played a vital role in MGSD’s academic

achievements throughout his 25-year tenure with the district. The district has been highlighted at the state and national level for being a leader in technological success. More than 800 people from approximately 35 states and 100 districts have visited the district to learn about its success firsthand. In April 2011 the PBS NewsHour featured the district in a segment, and in 2012 Juan Williams featured the district in a Fox News Special Report titled “Fixing Our Schools.” That same

Through its digital conversion, the district provides individual laptops to students and teachers from 2nd through 12th grades and iPads for all students in kindergarten and first grade. All grades use the SMART suite of technologies, including SMART boards. The system notes it pays for its technology and training by efficiently reallocating funds. However, it’s the district’s teachers that are the most critical element of its success. By focusing on individual students and using available tools to personalize learning for students, the district experiences tremendous success. The Numbers Game Mooresville resident’s background adds up to a job with the Yankees

F

or Mooresville resident Matt Reiland, numbers and baseball have always been a part of his family. He just never realized how far his love of the two things would take him. Matt, the second-oldest child of six, was an all-state shortstop at Raleigh Cardinal Gibbons High School before matriculating to Massachusetts’ Holy Cross University. After two years he retired from baseball to focus on school and transferred to N.C. State, where he studied Mathematics and Physics. Inspired by the attacks on 9/11, he joined the Navy’s Nuclear Equipment Program after graduating in 2002. He spent a year and a half in training, another three in a submarine and served a stint teaching classes at The Citadel. He then joined the private sector, joining oil and gas giant ConocoPhillips before landing in Mooresville with a finance job at Lowe’s. Lots and lots of math. It was perfect, at least almost. Matt says something was missing, and you can guess what it was. “I kind of realized office life wasn’t for me,” he says. “I had that itch.”

A new formula Matt took his first step toward the New York Yankees in the fall of 2017 with an unsolicited email to Jeff Burchett, the head coach of Mooresville High’s baseball team. “It was sort of out of the blue,” recalls Burchett. Matt was looking to volunteer as a coach and told Burchett about his background, which also included strength and conditioning. Burchett gave him a

An Overview of Youth Sports Organizations in Mooresville by Mike Savicki

W

hether your sport is soccer, softball or swimming, not to mention football, baseball, basketball, tennis or track, you can find programs, playing fields and fantastic competition aplenty in the Mooresville area. Lake Norman United Lacrosse Club, an organization dedicated to promoting lacrosse in the Lake Norman area and throughout the Carolinas, has grown in popularity over the years. The sport has taken root here so much so that kids who first started playing the sport at a young age are now playing at more advanced levels in the region. The influx of new players, instructors and volunteers is a sign of the sport’s popularity. The sport of fastpitch softball is also enjoying a tremendous rise in popularity among girls and young ladies between the ages of 8 and 18 with the Mooresville-based Comets

Youth Sports. This organization, with a new indoor training facility on South Broad Street, offers girls the opportunity to play at the highest levels and improve their chances of playing in college. Soccer continues to be a popular sport in the area, and in 2019, the Lake Norman Soccer Club merged with the Carolina Rapids and Discoveries Soccer Club to form the Charlotte Independence Soccer Club. CISC’s mission is to develop, promote and administer the game of soccer using key values of character, commitment, community, competition, and communication as the guiding principles to provide exceptional experience, while also developing and promoting life lessons and values. And what about those who long to compete into college and beyond? The Mooresville Spinners are one of eight

teams in the rapidly expanding Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL). Bringing together baseball players from schools across the Southeast for summer competition, the Spinners compete alongside the Lenoir Oilers, Concord Athletics, LKN Copperheads, Carolina Vipers, Charlotte Galaxy, Charlotte Prospects and Piedmont Pride.

THE NEWLY RENOVATED MOORESVILLE GOLF CLUB HAS GOLFERS ACROSS THE REGION TALKING.

W

hen it comes to selecting a golf course or courses in the Mooresville area, you really can’t go wrong. Whether you want to play golf in town or play lakeside, you can bet you’ll be hitting the greens under beautiful Carolina blue skies. First a little history, 1948 was a historic year for golf across America as well as in the local community. On the national scene, Ben Hogan won the 48th U.S. Open, his first of four, and pocketed its $2,000 purse, while Claude Harmon claimed the 12th Masters by finishing five strokes ahead of Cary Middlecoff, a future

champion himself. And, locally, long before Duke Energy unveiled plans for what was to become known as Lake Norman, a small nine-hole course opened just “down the hill” from Burlington Industries’ massive 230,000-square-foot mill, which anchored industry in Downtown Mooresville. The course, initially designed by the legendary Donald Ross, was built as a recreational amenity for the friends and family of the textile giant. As the decades passed, interest and participation in the game continued and the course became crowded. Fast forward to 1977 when,

to keep pace, former Mooresville Mayor Joe Knox secured federal grant funding which served as the catalyst for constructing nine additional holes and adding a new pro shop to the now public Mooresville Municipal Golf Course. Charlotte golf architect Porter Gibson oversaw the expansion, which opened to the public in 1978. The course then became a public fixture, playable to any golfer who might walk up looking for a tee time. “When I first came to Mooresville I could tell you who was playing almost right down to the tee time. And we were always welcoming new golfers to the course, too,” says Head PGA

Professional Jeremy Elliott, who joined Mooresville Golf Club in 1997. Around the region, other public, semipublic and private courses opened for play, too. From Mooresville west into Denver and north into points across Iredell County, new courses opened giving golfers choices they had never before enjoyed. Staying true to its original mission, however, Mooresville leaders continued to support their public facility. Soon though, the course began to show its age. The “old guard” remained, and regulars still filled their scheduled tee times, but town leaders began discussions centered on the future of the course. “After several years of our elected officials discussing whether or not to invest public money in a golf course, they decided ‘if we are going to do this then we are going to put the money in and make it a proper amenity for the public’,” Kim Sellers, Mooresville Public Information Officer explains.

2020

A Product of Lake Norman CURRENTS Magazine

“So they took it public, including golf course renovations as part of a $10 million recreation bond put up for vote and when voters said ‘yes’ the plan to renovate was put into motion.” On November 21, just days before Thanksgiving 2014, Elliott and his staff pulled the pins for the final time and closed the course for play. a gathering of disbelieving and disheartened public golfers watched in wonder as an army of bulldozers, dump trucks, front loaders and other heavy machinery made their way up the entryway of Mooresville Golf Course, fanned out in different directions and began demolishing seemingly each and every fairway, green, trap and tee box. Lush fairways and brilliant greens soon transformed into piles of red Carolina clay, dust and debris. Gone, too, were the cart paths, the driving range, and the warm and cozy clubhouse which had been incinerated as part of the demolition. Originally planned as a two-phase

renovation to be completed in 2019, the changes to Mooresville Municipal Golf Course, now renamed Mooresville Golf Club, were compressed, and the planned summer 2016 opening delayed, to deliver what planners now believe will be one of the top courses in the state in its category. “The town said, ‘If we are going to put so much into the golf course, let’s not stop short doing what is needed to take the former golf course to the new club level’ and everyone got behind them,” Sellers says. “For example, you don’t have to have a clubhouse to have great golf, but it will add another facet to the club environment that our officials and the golfers have wanted all along, so we modified our plans to include infrastructure upgrades, some to go along with the new clubhouse, and made them happen before opening.” Shortly after Labor Day 2016, the course opened once again. Now, with the renovations and upgrades in place, the course enjoys stellar reviews. Golf staff, backed by town officials, remain committed to the original mission of the course. “One thing that should not be lost in all this is that this is still a municipally owned, public course like we have always been,” says Elliott. “You can walk up, and if there is a tee time available, you can play golf.” And for those who might like even more of a challenge, two additional courses dot the area landscape. Mallard Head Country Club, a semiprivate par 72 course at 6,904 yards, and private, member and guest only, Trump National Charlotte, are just minutes from Mooresville Golf Club. Mallard Head Country Club offers some of the finest greens in North Carolina, while Trump National Charlotte has full tournament schedule for men, women, couples and junior golfers. It also offers couples’ events, junior summer camps, ladies clinics and an annual member-guest tournament. The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences ranked it Best Golf Course in the State.

Life on the Lake Residents enjoy diversity and a variety of price points in Mooresville by Holly Becker

Diverse people, options The buzzword in the Mooresville real estate market right now is diversity. There’s something for everyone from millennials and working professions to families and empty nesters. There’s also more diversity in price points, which Livingston said didn’t exist a couple of decades ago. “There are so many more opportunities to get a new home in the $200,000 to $400,000 range,” she explains. Lake Norman is a huge selling point to many who call Mooresville home. For those desiring an active lifestyle, the lake offers a variety of recreational activities. While many flock to neighborhoods bordering

T

he many different living options in Mooresville continue to make it an attractive place to live. The once rural town with roots in farming and the textile industry has transformed into a bustling suburb of Charlotte. While economic development in the Queen City has spurred a population boom in area, Mooresville has seen tremendous economic development in its own back yard. “When I talk to out-of-state clients, the draw to Mooresville is its taxes and great public schools,” says Ivester Jackson Realtor Annie Livingston. Translation — Iredell County residents have lower taxes than Mecklenburg County neighbors, as well as nationally recognized public schools.

MOORESVILLE OFFERS THE BEST IN LUXURY LAKESIDE LIVING.

the lake, such as The Point and the new Sisters Cove development, others seek neighborhoods that allow them to enjoy the lake without the hefty housing price tag. Livingston says more new construction neighborhoods are popping up that offer lake amenities to its residents without buying a lakefront home. “You don’t have to live on the lake to have lake access. You can have a $300,000-$400,000 home and have access to the lake,” she says.

Live, play, work For those whom prefer a more urban feel, the LangTree Lake Norman Apartments have much to offer. This mixed-use development of shops, restaurants and luxury apartments appeals to working professionals and empty nesters. The convenience of retail and entertainment just steps away from home and work is

desirable. Apartment living is also burgeoning along the Hwy 115 corridor near the Mooresville-Davidson border. Legacy Village and Continuum 115 are conveniently near Lake Norman Medical Center and a plethora of medical facilities on Fairview Road. The apartments also are just a short drive from the recently revitalized historic Downtown Mooresville and a renovated old textile mill, which houses The Main Street Antique Mall & Design Center and two restaurants. Livingston says The Courtyards at Brawley Point has been a popular choice for empty nesters. A key feature to the neighborhood is lowmaintenance living. The homeowners association fees cover many home upkeep chores from lawn service to home maintenance and repairs. “Many are downsizing into smaller homes but still want a new home that gives a community feeling,” she says.

The Lake of Luxury Upscale waterfront resort to make splash in Mooresville by Holly Becker

020 will see the beginning of an exciting new development project for Mooresville. Sunset Cove, billed as Lake Norman’s first and only luxury hotel along Mooresville’s shoreline, will boast 82 rooms, a 3,000 squarefoot-spa, a pool, a beach, a 4,000-square-foot conference center and an upscale restaurant.

Developer Brett Krueger of Sunset Cove Partners LLC, oversees the Sunset Cove project. He believes it’s time for Lake Norman to tap into luxury hotel market. “There’s really not a high end hotel in Lake Norman and a lot of groups send a lot of rooms to Charlotte,” he says. Sunset Cove will not just cater to out-of-towners visiting for business and leisure. Krueger says the resort will also appeal to locals wanting a relaxing staycation or beach and pool access without a long drive or flight. “We have over 3 million people in the Charlotte area, and you really don’t have access to the lake unless you own a boat or house,” says Krueger.

lake’s scenic sunsets. The indoor/outdoor spa features more than massage treatment packages. Other wellness amenities include salt caves, a mineral pool and a juice bar. Five hotel rooms will be located within the spa, giving guests longer access to spa amenities. “This is a spa where we really try to keep people all day,” said Krueger. “You can be at the resort and feel like you’re a thousand miles away. We want people to get there and not want to leave.” Other plans for the hotel include a yet-to-be named restaurant, slated to be an Italian steakhouse, which will feature indoor and outdoor seating. While the restaurant will be high end, Krueger promises a relaxing dining atmosphere. Daytime lounge seating by the pool will be converted to tables and chairs in the evenings. Krueger describes the resort as “Bali meets the Mediterranean.” The Bali style design includes wood and muted colors, but the resort will have a more traditional dining atmosphere. Day guests will be able to book spa appointments, dine in the restaurant, and, with a fee, enjoy the beach club with 1,500 feet of lake frontage. “It’s really important to me that every amenity is a standalone attraction that draws people there,” says Krueger. Sunset Cove anticipates opening its doors to guests in summer 2021.

DONT MISS SENIOR FUN

Age is Just a Number Senior citizens find support in Mooresville by Lori K. Tate

RETIREES LIVE IT UP IN MOORESVILLE.

R

etirement. The beauty of the word is that you finally have time to explore everything you’ve always wanted to do instead of slowing down. Retirees are focused on checking things off of their bucket lists and having fun doing it. If you’re a senior citizen in the Mooresville area, you have a distinct advantage because of the South Iredell Senior Center. More than 26 years ago the Iredell Council on Aging passed a resolution and voted to work towards securing a building to house a multi-purpose senior center in Mooresville. Today the South Iredell Senior Center is housed on the lower level of the Charles Mack Citizen Center in Downtown Mooresville. The purpose of the senior

36

center is based on the following three premises: Aging is a normal developmental process; human beings need peers with whom they can interact and who are available as a source of encouragement and support; and older adults have the right to a voice in determining matters in which they have a valid interest. The mission of the senior center is “to help seniors to continue to grow, promoting physical, emotional and economical wellbeing for successful aging.” All that said, there’s a lot of fun and fellowship to be had at the South Iredell Senior Center. Tina Czarnecki, senior center manager, says that the center currently serves more than 1,000 seniors and that exercise

classes are one of its most popular offerings. “Seniors today want to invest in their good health and fitness. Other popular classes include a variety of card games, arts and crafts, various sewing/knitting groups, yoga, tai chi, line dancing, water exercises, etc.,” she explains. The center also has a variety of regular workshops where community business or organizations present topics of interest. In addition to a plethora of yearround social events, Czarnecki says the center is “a one stop for all seniors.” “ If seniors need a service or help of any kind, the senior center can assist. Most of the time the center actually provides the needed service, but if we don’t, we will get them connected with who does,” explains Czarnecki. “We offer everything from support groups, legal services, tax filing, health screenings, outreach and volunteer opportunities. The Senior Center even offers counseling and enrollment assistance for things like Medicare/senior insurance, nursing home/assisted living, Social Security online enrollment and more.” The South Iredell Senior Center is a place where individuals can continue to grow emotionally, maintain their health and fitness, learn new things, make friends, find purpose and basically help seniors to age successfully.

The Scoop

If you are an Iredell County resident, there is no membership fee for the South Iredell Senior Center. Out-ofcounty residents pay a low annual fee of $25, which is used to support a scholarship fund.

NON-PROFITS

Making a Difference Mooresville non-profits are always seeking volunteers by Lori K. Tate

O

ne thing is for certain about the Mooresville community—it’s always willing to lend a hand to help fellow residents, young and old, in need. Look no further than the strong presence of non-profits in the area as proof. Members of The MooresvilleSouth Iredell Chamber constantly volunteer time to various non-profits across the community, as part of the Chamber’s purpose is to act as a catalyst in the area’s civic activities. SCAN of Iredell is an Exchange Club Center for the prevention of child abuse. For the past 29 years the Exchange SCAN Center in Iredell County has been committed to preventing child abuse and making families stronger. There are a variety of ways to volunteer for SCAN, whether through helping with fundraisers or donating babysitting hours. In nearby Statesville, you’ll find Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center, which serves child victims of sexual abuse and their nonoffending family members in Iredell and Alexander counties. Volunteers are always needed to assist with fundraisers and other events. Children’s Hope Alliance is a non-profit organization that dates back more than 125 years. In just the last year, the organization 2020

helped more than 3,600 children and families across North Carolina. All of the programs and services Children’s Hope Alliance provides create hope for hurting children and families in three ways: healing the hurt, providing a safe home and encouraging a healthy start. Group volunteer opportunities include hosting a dinner for one of the organization’s programs, general cleaning and groundskeeping, and organizing supply drives, fundraisers and/or benefits. For 80 years, The Mooresville Lake Norman Christian Mission has been focused on helping people emerge from poverty. Each year, the mission serves an average of 4,000 families, including more than 4,000 children and 10,000 individuals. Volunteer opportunities include mentoring, manning the front desk, hosting fundraising events and activities, organizing toy drives during the holidays, working in the food pantry, and more. The Mooresville Soup Kitchen’s mission is “to provide nourishing meals, encouragement and fellowship to those in need.” Located in Downtown Mooresville, The Mooresville Soup Kitchen is a non-denominational, faith-based organization that serves more than

4,000 meals monthly, among other services. There are plenty of ways to volunteer at the soup kitchen. You can cook, clean, sort and distribute food, as well as pick up donations from local retailers. Volunteers are required to attend one orientation meeting before attending. Hope of Mooresville (HOMe) is a newer nonprofit in Mooresville, and it offers temporary housing for homeless women and children. HOMe’s mission is to provide safe and restorative shelter, food and support services such as job placement, family care, mental health assistance, financial planning and addiction help. They are always looking for female volunteers to cover shifts at the home when staff members aren’t on site, as well as help with food prep, hosting bible study groups, teaching skills, etc. In Mooresville, there are plenty of opportunities for you to make a positive difference, so don’t hesitate, get involved.

FAB FOOD DONT MISS

A Taste for Mooresville Tasty Town USA pairs current cuisine with town’s history by Aaron Garcia photography by Jamie Cowles

S

arah Tuvia didn’t set out to create Mooresville’s most innovative culinary experience. In fact, her motivations were quite the opposite; instead, the Tasty Town USA founder wanted to draw on the time-tested technique of food tasting more commonly found in cities with dense culinary communities, and she wanted to do it while offering a glimpse of the town’s past, which has been painted over almost as often as its murals. The result is an experience that you literally cannot find anywhere else. It’s fair to say that the idea really began back in the Middle East. Tuvia, a Monroe native and graduate of the University of Maryland at College Park, matriculated to Tel Aviv University for her graduate degree. While there she became a fan of food tours, which offered guests samplings from several local vendors. Typically held the day before Sabbath, the event ran through urban marketplaces in a somewhat hurried pace. It was an easy and exciting way to show her visiting friends and loved ones the city and culture. Tuvia stayed in the city for 10 years before moving to Charlotte. She said she never lost her affinity for small-town Americana, especially the smaller mill towns common in the south. When she began visiting her now-husband, Ori, who lived in Mooresville, she fell in love. She moved to Mooresville in 2017. Tuvia says after learning some of the town’s history—as well as eating at the local restaurants—she had an idea. In May of this year, Sarah and Ori launched Tasty Town USA, and the

vision, at least to them, was simple. “I wanted to recreate that excitement and energy (from Tel Aviv) in a place that was home,” Tuvia says. Despite the international impetus, Tuvia never lost her love of smalltown life. After moving to the area, Tuvia began to learn about the town’s history. She was intrigued my Mooresville’s train-town beginnings and old-timey murals. The history was so rich that she decided to incorporate it into her food tour. The result is an experience that manages to bring the town’s history and current expansion to the same table. Tuvia says that while food tours may be popular in other areas, the idea didn’t resonate with many local business owners at first. Now that she’s taken a few groups around town, local business owners are starting to see that Tuvia’s guests aren’t the only ones benefitting from the tours. Joe Torcasso, owner of CynTucci’s Bakery on Main Street and a New

York native, says he has seen how businesses can benefit from an idea like Tuvia’s, especially when they’re off the beaten path. “Sarah has a great idea here because not that many people come down to downtown,” says Torcasso. “They don’t even know about downtown.” Tuvia has more ideas on deck. Scavenger hunts, ghost tours, brewery crawls. Regardless of the iteration, though, you can expect your tour with Tasty Town USA to be unmistakably Mooresville, and that won’t change, says Tuvia. “I knew I wanted other people to discover this because I love downtown historic Mooresville,” says Tuvia, “and I want for everyone to love it.”

Owner Henry Hampton opened the doors to the Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville in 1993 and has been entertaining visitors with more than 750 animals from six continents ever since. Giraffes, rhinoceros, camels, zebras, ring-tailed lemurs, water buffalo, ostrich and pot-bellied pigs are just a few of the animals that can be found on the ranch.
