2025 Distinguished Alumni Inductee - Bill Bocock

A pioneer in sustainable farming and a dedicated community supporter, Bill Bocock has exemplified leadership, generosity and environmental stewardship throughout his life and career.

After graduating from Lakeland College’ s Agriculture 2-in-1 program in 1952, Bill Bocock devoted his life to dairy farming, operating a successful family farm alongside his wife Phyllis, his brother John and sister-in-law Jenny.

Well before it was widely adopted, Bill Bocock’ s lifelong commitment to sustainability was evident in his approach to land and animal care. His forward-thinking methods not only preserved the integrity of the Bocock farm but also served as a model for responsible agriculture.

In 2016, Bill and his family were honoured with Alberta Milk’s Dairy Industry Achievement Award.

Bill Bocock’s philanthropy mirrors his values. In 2019, the Bococks received the St. Albert Philanthropy Award in recognition of their local and global impact. Lakeland College has been a beneficiary of Bill Bocock’s generosity through his support of Indigenous student supports, environmental sciences projects and events, and student awards.

His dedication to community extends beyond philanthropy. He has volunteered with numerous organizations, including the United Farmers of Alberta Cooperative, Alberta Surface Rights, Northern Alberta Dairy Pool, and the Clean Air Strategic Alliance.

Bill Bocock’s life is a testament to the belief that change begins with action - and that sustainable, generous living can help shape a better world.

It is with great honour that Lakeland College inducts Bill Bocock, Class of 1952, to the Alumni Wall of Distinction.

2025 Distinguished Citizen Inductee - Darrel Howell

Darrel Howell is a proponent of life-long learning and is dedicated to advancing that cause through supporting post-secondary opportunities in the community and pursuing further education himself. Professionally, Howell spent over 40 years in the energy sector, holding senior management positions that have honed his expertise in strategic planning, maintenance, construction, engineering, communications and financial management. He’s held key positions at Tartan Canada Corporation, Klinger’s Oilfield Services, Flint Energy Services, Husky Energy, and Syncrude Canada.

Howell holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta.

Howell and his wife Liz have called Lloydminster home since 1988. Howell has been involved in many aspects of his community, including serving on the Lakeland College Board from 1991-1997, and then again from 2012 -2018, including the last 3 years as chair. He has also generously donated to the college through his support of athletics, the Rustlers Golf Tournament, the Friends of Bob Mottram award, and the President’s Gala.

He previously served on the University of Calgary Senate, Alberta Chamber of Resources, Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, Construction Owners Association of Alberta, Lloydminster Region Health Foundation and Grace United Church Central Board. Howell is also a proud member of the Grace United Church Community Choir, the Peckers golf group, and the Meri-dian ‘Ukuleles.

“You get back more than you give in the end,” Howell says. “I’ve had a very good life and I feel that I should give back.”

Howell is currently augmenting his education as a part-time Lakeland College student working towards a bachelor of general studies.

“I’m an engineer by training and by career,” Howell says. “It’s extremely technical and pretty dry. I’ve been enjoying the humanities. I really enjoy the idea that you can discuss the concepts. There’s not really much to discuss in engineering.”

Howell also enjoys meeting his classmates, saying, “It’s been really nice to meet a bunch of young people too. And boy, they are pretty impressive. The kids are more open to ideas and diversity than we were back when I was that age, so that’s been nice too.”

When informed that he had been selected as the Lakeland College’s Distinguished Citizen for 2025, Howell said, “The award is a real honour for me. I’ve always had a lot of respect for Lakeland. I started out as a board member and I think I’m even more impressed with it since I became a student.”

It is with great respect that Lakeland College recognizes Darrel Howell as a Distinguished Citizen and awards him an honorary bachelor of applied business degree.
