Cruise on the Southport 33 LX
Southport Boats’ 33-foot model is no longer just for fishing: The new 33 LX builds on the original 33 platform to create a much more relaxing and sociable boating experience. The 33 LX features a new deck plan that makes it ideal for both anglers and cruisers. In particular, a forward 270-degree wraparound pit seating area on the port side provides ample space for hanging out and enjoying a few new amenities, such as extra refrigeration, a microwave, a coffee maker, and food and beverage storage. The social circle extends to the aft cockpit, which contains an L-shaped wraparound lounge and wetbar. Southport will debut the 33 LX at the Newport and Fort Lauderdale boat shows this fall. Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore isn’t going to squander a good chance to celebrate; even though Sleeping Bear itself is only 46 years old, it’s joining in on the National Park Service’s (NPS) Centennial festivities (NPS.GOV) this summer. The complete calendar is still taking shape, but centennialthemed events, workshops, concerts and outings are sprinkled throughout the year. These include the Find Your Park Concert Series held at the Platte River or D.H. Day campground amphitheaters, the two-day historical Port Oneida Fair, monthly “star parties” and a brand new, one-day Astronomy Festival. The celebrations culminate on August 25 for the NPS Founders Day. For more information, visit TRAVERSECITY.COM.

Women-led eXXpedition Sets Sail
On August 20, the all-female crews for eXXpedition Great Lakes 2016 will set sail on the first leg of their trip through the Great Lakes, Lake St. Clair and the St. Lawrence River. eXXpedition aims to shed light on the link between human health and plastic pollution in our waterways by conducting water samplings for plastics, chemicals and toxins for organizations such as the United Nations. The team is inviting the public to join them on August 20 for a day of citizen science by participating in water sampling and beach clean up. The team is also looking for women to join the lead boats or to be in charge of marina-based or landbased activities in the region. For more information, visit

Clemons Boats Turns 50
This year marks the big 5-0 for Clemons Boats in Sandusky, Ohio. This fourth-generation family-run business was first opened in 1966 by Bob Clemons and began selling Bayliners, Thompson and Thunderbird/Formula boats. Today, Clemons Boats is still thriving and serves the northern Ohio region with top brands such as Boston Whaler, Cobalt, Sea Hunt and Bennington. In addition to boat sales, Clemons Boats offers service, parts, storage, dockage, rentals and membership to the Carefree Boat Club.
