This nine-inch long, green gadget uses my kinetic energy and converts it to usable energy for my iPhone (or your iPod, Blackberry, Palm Treo, Sprint phone, or many other electronics, including cameras, gaming devices and GPS units). While I’m walking or running, the nPower® PEG (Personal Energy Generator) is harvesting my energy so that I can plug in my phone and recharge it as I go. It only weighs nine ounces and can be placed in my pocket or briefcase. The story behind the company, Tremont Electric, is also very interesting. Aaron LeMieux, the inventor of nPower® technology and founder of Tremont Electric, conceptualized the idea for the nPower® PEG

while backpacking on the Appalachian Trail. As Aaron walkedthe trail, he became increasingly aware of the up and down movement of his backpack. His experience as a mechanical and biomedical engineer allowed him to recognize the excess of kinetic energy that was being expelled by his backpack, and he began to work through potential solutions for harvesting this wasted energy. I’m ready to pack up and go, myself. -Scott

beauty style BEE-utiful how bee pollen can change your day many options on every shelf in every store to keep skin healthy. It's a mega-money industry, and there are plenty of things that work very well. But sometimes it can get a bit overwhelming, so we thought we'd share a bit of our own experience and turn both men and women on to our favorite natural product: bee pollen. As our readers are aware, honeybees are extremely important to the overall health of our entire ecosystem here on earth. They pollinate hundreds of thousands of plants that would otherwise be extinct without their mobile help each season. These amazing bees also produce and store honey, which is made when the nectar and sweet deposits from plants and trees are gathered and deposited

beauty&style in the honeycomb as a food source for the colony. They also secrete the bees wax that forms the walls of the honeycomb. And finally, the bees also collect pollen as they move about and carry it back to the hive. What does all of this bee history mean? It means that there are some wonderful products on the market that use the benefits of bees to make our lives better! Bee pollen is rich in protein and contains essential amino acids. Some of the overall health claims made by bee pollen enthusiasts (we can't substantiate them, but we can pass them along) are: anti-aging, antistress, increased energy, bone health, brain health, circulatory and heart

health, digestion and intestinal health, immune health, and our favorite... healthy hair, skin and nails. The favorable reaction of hair, skin and nails is apparently due to the levels of sulphur, iron, zinc, and vitamins A, B3, B8, Rutin, and amino acids in the bee pollen. Combined with an already recommended regimen of drinking lots of water, getting plenty of exercise and rest, and eating the right foods, bee pollen can be a big plus to our skin care practice. Bee pollen can be taken as a supplement or is found in lotions, and can also be administered as a mask when mixed with water. It really is a versatile and natural addition to the quest for healthy, beautiful skin. c

house dock not too fast, though... about the reemergence of spring is that we can gather all of our toys, along with friends and family, and jump back outside and enjoy the great outdoors! And, maybe after our backs are sore from cleaning the wintery mess off of the porch, the time is right to grab a book, or better yet... lakehomes & lifestyle, and relax on the porch swing. These American favorites date back to possibly Colonial times, but they certainly gained popularity in the late 1800s and early 1900s when homes were built in the Victorian style with verandas wrapping around the house. Now, this must-have for outdoor relaxing is now available in so many types (hanging swings, gliders, woven chairs), and materials (traditional wooden, wrought iron, wicker, recycled plastic), and styles (adirondack, canopy, free-standing, and log cabin style). ď §

Colors for the pillows can coordinate with other upholstery in the area, but they don’t necessarily have to be the same... let complementary colors play with each other. A small side table that doubles as a storage chest could hold a light blanket or cashmere throw for those cooler days. A quilt from a favorite antiques store can be casually thrown over the back of the swing for a great effect. Then finish your new favorite corner of the porch or patio with a planter or two and a basket of books and magazines you can easily take indoors with you when you go. Landscape At The Lake tips and ideas is all about location, then landscaping is all about planning. Pond Your pond can be a very important

ecosystem that plays host to many organisms in the environment, including birds, fish, frogs, and plants. This complicated and beautiful organization is a welcome retreat for humans and fauna, alike. And, contrary to popular belief, ponds do not draw more mosquitoes. If mosquito larvae are laid there, the fish will most likely consume most of them -just part of the great cycle of life in a pond. There are many different types of ponds‌goldfish, koi, water garden, etc. So, planning is essential here, and we understand that the most common mistake is making a pond too small. Breathe deep and think big.

Waterfall Waterfall landscaping will add beauty and serenity to almost any yard or garden area. The sound of running water can be soothing for body and soul. These particular creations come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can even be purchased in kits. This dynamic addition can easily become the focal point of your landscaping project. When considering design options, one of the biggest challenges is to find the necessary height for the waterfall. Then, it's loads of fun choosing materials, plantings, lighting, and statuary to enhance the entire centerprise. Let the ideas flow with this one.

Gazebo This classic architectural addition to your home and acreage is a stunning way to create another outdoor living space. Gazebos can be created in a shallow pond at the end of a short dock, atop a rise in the landscape, or simply in a nice open spot on a grassy lawn. The structure will provide a shady area in which to sit, read, enjoy the garden, some shelter from which to enjoy gentle showers, or a divine place to have a garden party. Benches, gliders and lounge chairs can be added along with an ornamental fountain to embellish the gazebo. And, birdfeeders

and birdbaths provide a great reason to sit and bird-watch. Don't forget to add lamps, torches, or strung lights for a great evening entertaining spot. And, "living" gazebos can be created by planting vines nearby and allowing them to climb the latticework.

Fire Pit or Fireplace One of our favorite landscape features can really be called the living room of your outdoors. There is nothing more fun or cozy than gathering around a fire place or fire pit on a cool evening (no matter the season) and enjoying good company-and maybe even roasting a few marshmallows. It warms the heart as well as the feet to have a crackling fire in the midst of family and friends. There are so many options with this idea, it takes a bit of narrowing down. What is the best location? Where is the center of the action without being obtrusive to other outdoor activities? Fire pits can be purchased-there are copper, cast iron, ceramic, etc. Or, they can be built‌ but this requires some homework. Check with your municipality for regulations, and check with utilities for underground lines before digging. Now, go get the hot dogs and have an old fashioned camp fire!

There is nothing more fun or cozy than gathering around a fire pit.

house&dock

Hardscaping Patios, pavers, walls, barbecues, decks, fences, and more. These are the pieces that really pull the whole outdoor living area together. Choosing materials that flow throughout the design and provide the feel you want are critical to the overall plan. Bricks, stone, wrought iron, wood, tile‌ what color, how elaborate, and how to combine materials? These are all good questions to ask at the beginning. Pick from natural stones like limestone and flagstone, or use the new stamped concrete for an alternative. There are fireplace kits that use stucco, brick or stone. Decks can be made of traditional woods such as cedar or the new composites. Dont' forget-in the interest of preserving the sacred outdoor family meal, spend time planning and preparing for the outdoor kitchen.Visualize a cooking area, a seating area, and some quick access to the indoors for those lastminute items or quick clean-up. The stainless steel appliances can be built into the brick or stone structure, or add a customdesgined tile front to the construction. Either way, great grilling awaits! c

More than 20,500 people received services through HACAP in 2008 alone. More than half of them were between the ages of 13 and 19. Clearly, much work remains to be done. As the largest local funder in the Heart of America Community AIDS Partnership, DIFFA pools its financial resources with other organizations. The partnership then issues grants to qualified agencies and programs. Recently, DIFFA’s contribution to the AIDS Partnership has been used to match funding from the Elton John AIDS Foundation through the National AIDS Fund, adding as much as $80,000 a year to the total available.

Event organizers hope to attract 450 to 500 people this year and to raise more money than ever before. The special Table of Friends, which includes a twofor-one match from a silent benefactor, will go a long way toward that goal. In addition, all contributions raised by that table—including the match—will be matched again by the Elton John AIDS Foundation. “I’m so excited about celebrating the 20th year of this event,” says Table of Friends Chair John Rufenacht, of John Rufenacht Associates, Inc. “The heart of this event is the table designers. The diversity of their creativity is just astounding. The only limitation they have is to seat 10 people for dinner at their table. Otherwise, the sky’s the limit. And believe me, they reach the sky!” c

how to

Create a Warm, Inviting Guest Room

It’s interesting how, once you own a lake home, you entertain so many more guests than you ever did before. So here are some hints for creating a guest room where they’ll feel right at home. written by: liz craig

I

f you haven’t given your guest room much thought before, or if you are converting a former kids’ room to accommodate visitors, take a good look around. First, is it clean—carpets clean and vacuumed, windows clean, furniture dusted, guest bathroom sparkling? Second, is it the kind of room you’d feel comfortable staying in? The answer to the first question can be “Yes” with a few hours’ notice. If the answer to the second question is “No,” or even “Heck, no!” you will have a longer-term project called “Home Sweet Guest Room.” To begin, think about what makes a room homey and comfortable. Here are a few ideas.

General décor

Art on the walls should be pleasant and non-controversial. The room’s color scheme should be soft and subdued, but not too “girly” for males to feel at home. Beige, grey, muted blue and green are excellent choices, perhaps with accents of white, ecru or black. A real or silk floral arrangement in vivid colors can be a lively accent.

A comfortable bed

A queen bed is your best bet, because it will be comfortable for a couple. Test the mattress and see if it sags or has bumps or (heaven forbid!) squeaky springs. If so, pitch it and get a new mattress set that’s firm, with a comfy pillow top or pillow top mattress cover. Also provide a choice of sleeping pillows. Some guests like big cushy ones, some like thinner ones. 40

march / april

Beige, grey, muted blue and “green are excellent color choices for a guest room. ” Delightful bed wardrobe

Your grown son’s “Star Wars” coverlet and matching sheets—or the cast-off set from your own bed—just won’t do for yout guests. Choose a new set of bed linens and comforter in relaxing colors. Select the highest thread count available for sheets and pillowcases; the higher the thread count, the softer the fabric. The comforter should be enough to keep your guests warm in spring or summer, but in cooler weather, keep extra blankets handy at the foot of the bed. www.lakehomesmag.com

A well-stocked nightstand

There should be at least one nightstand on one side of the bed (one on each side is better), holding an alarm clock and a lamp that is bright enough to illuminate reading material, but not so bright it makes your guests squint. A 75-watt bulb (or compact fluorescent equivalent) should be about right. In case they came without reading material, put few recent issues of

www.lakehomesmag.com

some interesting, non-controversial magazines in the drawer, along with earplugs and some bottled water. And be sure they know these things are there for them.

Entertainment

If there is no television in the guest room, get one. Have it hooked up so your guests can enjoy all of the channels you have on your own TV.

Provide a remote control for their convenience, as well as any instructions about the channels or how to operate the DVR. You might even have a computer or netbook in the room, so they can check e-mail or Web-surf.

Bathroom

As a guest, it’s distressing to wake up in the dead of night having to use the bathroom and not be able to see how to get there. Either have nightlights in the hallway or leave a flashlight on the nightstand. Stock the bathroom with plenty of toilet tissue, facial tissues, soaps, towels, and a lightly scented moisturizing lotion for hands and body. You might also provide travel sizes of shampoo and conditioner. A floral arrangement in the bathroom is a lovely touch.

Kitchen

When your guests have settled in, give them a tour of your house, including the kitchen and the refrigerator. Show them where the breakfast foods are, and how to make coffee or tea, in case they are earlier risers than you are. Also, let them know it’s perfectly all right for them to fix a late-night snack. Point out the cold cuts, peanut butter, jelly, butter, milk and anything else they might crave at 2 a.m., and the toaster, microwave, plates, utensils and napkins.

www.lakehomesmag.com

Miscellaneous

Let your guests know what time you usually get up, and if you will be using the same bathroom, arrange shower or bath times for everyone’s convenience. And make it a point, after you’ve toured them and showed them the amenities you’ve provided for them, to ask them if there’s anything else they need or want.

Preparing a restful, “comfortable environment for your guests is all part of being an excellent host.

Hybrid Clubs Are Here To Stay rescue your shot!

turning green, the courses are being spruced up, and the Midwest is ready for some golf again! If you haven’t had a chance to keep your shot in shape in warmer climes during our wicked winter, it’s time to dust off the clubs and take stock of what’s in the bag. Regardless of whether you’ve embraced them and fallen in love, or whether you still have some lingering doubts, here are some straight-shooting answers as to why hybrids are here to stay. ➛

When To Use This is where the term “rescue” comes from.

1 2 3

The long iron shot-you need distance and accuracy to get to the green. The rough-with the added weight in the clubhead, you can swing through tall grass with more power than an iron. A hazard in front of a green -carry the ball, but no rolling when you get there. Stick it where it lands.

A golf ball is like a clock. Always hit it at 6 o'clock and make it go toward 12 o'clock. But make sure you're in the same time zone. ~Chi Chi Rodriguez Taylor Made came out with the first hybrid called the Rescue in the late 1970s and all of the popular brands have jumped on the bandwagon. So, no matter your favorite club, there is a hybrid you’ll love. But, how to choose the right ones? That’s a little more difficult. There are as many brands out there as there are shots. Certainly seek the advice at your pro shop. But, if you want to do a little research first, one of our favorite websites that offers unbiased information is www.mygolfclubreviews.com. This site gives comparable information about each club as well as reviews

written by real golfers from their own experiences. And, of course www.pga.com has all kinds of information regarding anything golf, including hybrids. Treat yourself to a really great golf season this year. Pull out the hybrids, hit the driving range to get acquainted with them (or re-acquainted maybe?), make sure your glove is in good shape, replenish the ball supply, and have fun! It seems that relaxing is the one piece of advice that all pros have in common when tutoring their golfers. Don’t get too tight, and please... whatever you do, let the club do the work. Sounds like winning advice to us! c

Callaway XHybrid

Also called utility clubs, these amazing combos of woods and irons provide great flexibility on the course and even greater control over your shots. Here’s why...

Design The head is usually made of hollow steel, although titanium is becoming more common. The center of gravity is positioned at the bottom and the back of the head. This lower center of gravity increases the launch angle, making the loft higher than a similar iron.

Performance The head and face of a hybrid are modeled after a wood, so you receive the same impact as a wood-the “trampoline effect” with a high launch angle and a lot of backspin. The result is a high spin rate so the ball drops sharply and has little roll.

Swing Use much the same swing as you would with your mid to long irons. Hit down and through the ball with your normal grip, stance and posture. Let the hybrid do the work!

How To Find A Fish Finder your favorite hobby just made easier isn't as relaxing as it should be when it lasts for hours on end. After all, a person only has so much free time in which the weather is great, the boat is out, the time is one's own, the beverages are in the cooler, and the friends have cleared their schedules. That's why the nifty invention of the sonar fish finder has been such a gift to the sport of fishing. But, there's a catch (pun intended!). Fish finders are complicated creatures and there are scads of them out on the market. It is impossible to just walk into the local sport/fishing/ hunting mega store and pick out the nicest looking gadget or the best

finding elusive fish

There are five important factors to consider: The Transducer

Display Size

Depth

There are two types of transducers, single frequency and dual frequency. Single is for lakes and shallow coastal fishing, and dual is for deep water fishing.

Displays range from four to seven inches or larger. Larger screens are more expensive.

The power and quality of the transducer will determine how well the sonar will reach greater depths. But, no matter what the box or the sales person tells you, the numbers are always based on clear water. Salty or murky or choppy water will change the numbers.

Display Resolution The higher the resolution, the better the image will be. Color screens are good for direct sunlight because they are easier to see.

known name and understand what is in the box... unless someone has done the research. We have, and this is what fishermen/fisherladies need to know. Compare, compare, compare. How much will this set us back, you ask? Well, a decent fish finder can be had for somewhere between $200 and $500, with about $1,000 being the upper end. But, let's kick it up a notch, as chef Emeril Legasse would say! Just for fun, take a look at the Garmin 15" Color Touch Screen Chartplotter, which crosses the finish line at $6,535 and some change. It connects to the Garmin marine network and acts as your GPS system, as well as being your depth finder and connecting with other systems on your boat.

You can also add high power radar and XM satellite radio and weather to the system. So, start your boat engines, grab the poles and let the fishing begin! It's never been so fun or so easy as it is with these wonderful toys. There is no excuse for letting the big one get away! c

Other tidbits Some fish finders will also display thermoclines-the fronts where water temperatures change and collide. Also, be sure to ask about mounting for both the transducer and the display. And, finally, if it's important to you, find out how often the sonar updates per second.

pique-nique… the french

invented the word. The very first picnics were actually held indoors during the 17th century. Guests were all expected to “pick” a dish to share, hence the term “pique”. (“Nique” is most likely just a fun rhyming accompaniment.) Before long, the “picnic” term and concept travelled to England. By the 19th century, the term referred to an outdoor society event in which each guest contributed food or entertainment. ➛

Picnic Like You're In Paris

must-haves for a country french experience

food&festivities We love the hearty, rustic feel of the great outdoors and a variety of French-inspired foods that appeal to adults and children, alike. And, as the French originally intended you can ask guests to participate in a pot luck picnic, or prepare the spread yourself, therefore controlling the contents of a gorgeous table! We recommend starting with a large picnic or dining table outdoors, if possible… and covering it with a wonderful Provencal print tablecloth -lots of color! Then, set the table with large serving pieces such as a butcher block or board for cheeses, a marble or granite slab for meats, large trays for fruits and breads, and colorful ceramic plates for other, smaller dishes. Try to achieve different heights on your table, and if necessary cover a box with a napkin and place a plate on top of it for height variety.

Now, it's time for the food suggestions! Cheeses

Some typical French choices are: •

Roquefort This cheese is so strong it pairs best with a heavy wine such as Port or Sauternes.

Cambert and Brie Soft white cheese to be spread on crackers or bread, goes well with Champagne, a dry white, or Burgundy Red, Bordeaux or Beaujolais.

• Other cheeses: (non-French) Edam, Cotswold, or Cheddar.

Add the tomatoes, scallions and basil and season with salt and pepper. ✦ In a blender, puree the shallot with the vinegar, hot water and mustard. With the blender on, slowly add 6 tablespoons of the safflower oil until combined. Season the vinaigrette with salt and pepper, then toss with the corn salad. ✦ In a large bowl, toss the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil with the scallops; season with salt and pepper. Heat a large grill pan. Add half of the scallops at a time to the pan and grill over moderately high heat, turning once, until browned, about 4 minutes per batch.
