‘Rock of Ages’ exhibit showcases Barona musical traditions, talents On Nov. 19, the Barona Cultural Center & Museum will open “Rock of Ages: Contemporary Music Traditions on the Barona Reservation,” an exhibition that will showcase today’s native culture of singersongwriters, rock bands, country-western players and other popular music — reservation-style. “Music and musicians tell great stories through song and memories,” said Cheryl Hinton, director of the Barona Cultural Center & Museum. “We recently interviewed the many musicians on the Barona Indian Reservation and this exhibition offers an engaging look at their stories, their teachers and how they got their start in music.” The history of music on the Barona Indian Reservation is diverse and rooted in tradition. Contemporary musicians carry on the tuneful tradition through genres of rock, corridos, country-western and folk music. “Rock of Ages” will feature those musicians who have records and

CDs, professional musicians, those who play music as a hobby and those who have shared their musical talents with the community during times of sorrow and celebration. Most importantly, said Hinton, the exhibition will celebrate all of these dedicated musicians who are passing down their love of music to a new generation and continue this important Barona tradition.

Barona Cultural Center & Museum is on the Barona Indian Reservation at 1095 Barona Road, one mile north of the Barona Resort & Casino. It is open Tuesday through Friday, from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information or to schedule a group tour, call 619-443-1003, ext. 219, or visit www.baronamuseum.org.
