THE THRILL OF VICTORY

A joyous Kayla Myers runs toward her Poway High School track and field teammates after pole vaulting 12 feet, 4 inches during the Palomar League championships Saturday at Mt. Carmel High School. The vault set a new high school record and give Myers the event title.

Meetings next week on gas pipeline Plans by San Diego Gas & Electric and the Southern California Gas Company to build a high-pressure natural gas pipeline along Pomerado Road will be the subject of public meetings Wednesday in Escondido and Thursday in Scripps Ranch. The Rancho Bernardo and Poway portions are part of an approximately 47-mile, 36-inch natural gas transmission pipeline proposed to be built from the Rainbow Metering Station near the

Riverside County line to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The endeavor is being called “The Pipeline Safety & Reliability Project.” The California Public Utilities Commission is preparing an Environmental Impact Report to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of the project and has opened its “scoping” period, which will run through June 12. “Suzanne was the perfect balance. We never felt any pressure, but were fully informed and well advised. Every detail was attended to in a timely manner. While we were drawn to her by her website initially, we were pleasantly surprised to find her marketing plan (for the sale of our previous home) to surpass any we had seen. She was diplomatic about managing our expectations – on what we could/should afford. She accurately placed us in the home that was suited not only for our income – but our activities and lifestyle. In negotiations, similar to a chess master, Suzanne was able to tell us what the other parties moves were in advance so we knew all our options. Suzanne has an exceptional understanding of the Poway market. When we mention her name, we get a positive reaction; we aren’t used to people complimenting us on our choice of realtors!” – Guy & Heidi J.

Broadway tunes to be featured at RB Chorale’s spring show Six high school seniors will compete for $15,000 in scholarships BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Four Poway Unified students are among six high school seniors vying for scholarships by performing during the RB Chorale’s annual spring concerts next month. This year’s theme is “Best of Broadway: Yesterday and Today.” The 44th annual concerts will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10 in the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road. Tickets are $32 for preferred seating; $22 for general admission; $20 for seniors, students and military; and $7 for children (infants to 12 years). They can be purchased at RBChorale.org, 858-485-7664 or from any chorale member. According to show organizers, this year’s concert will feature the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Irving Berlin, the Gershwins, Elton John and Stephen Sondheim. Among Broadway shows to be highlighted include “Les Misérables,” “The Phantom of the Opera,” “The King and I,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Into the Woods.” Proceeds from the RB Chorale’s spring and winter concerts go to its scholarship fund that provides financial assistance to high school seniors from throughout San Diego County who plan to continue their instrumental or vocal music studies in college. This year, six finalists were selected from among the 10 applicants, officials said. They will be competing for a share of a combined

$15,000 that will be presented during the two concerts. The top finalist from each concert — as determined by audience vote — will receive a $3,500 award. The secondand third-place performers will receive $2,500 and $1,500 respectively. During the Friday night concert the finalists will be: • Derrick “DJ” Kennedy Martin, Jr. of Poway High School. He is a tenor saxophonist who plans to study music business and entrepreneurship at San Diego State University. • Austin John Thatcher of Poway High School. He is a vocalist who plans to continue his music studies at Palomar College. • Sophia Liu Su of Scripps Ranch High School. She is a pianist who plans to continue her music education at the University of California Los Angeles. During the Saturday night concert the finalists will be: • Proma Dewanjee of Carlsbad High School. She is a pianist who will study music at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. • Katherine Anne Thorvick of Poway High School. She is a vocalist who plans to continue her music studies at New York University. • Garrett Caelan Weir of Mt. Carmel High School. He is a vocalist who plans to continue his music education at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. In a press release, RB Chorale officials said the six finalists are not only “musicians of great promise,” but students who have achieved many “significant” honors and awards who are also community volunteers. “They are the ‘complete package’ — smart, talented, dedicated and on their way up,” it was stated.

Seniors honored for their years of helping PUSD students BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK Seniors Helping Our Kids and OASIS tutors at Poway Unified schools were honored on May 11 for their years of volunteer efforts. SHOK/OASIS Coordinator Jane Radatz said the program had 250 volunteers working at 24 campuses this academic year as reading tutors, classroom helpers and ballroom dance teachers. Of these, 21 were recognized for volunteering five, 10 or 15 years. Over the past decade, the ballroom dance teachers have instructed more than 22,000 fifth graders in “the basic steps and etiquette of ballroom dancing as a way to build their social skills and their confidence in their ability to take on and master something new,” she said. According to Radatz, SHOK was founded more than a quarter-century ago by Elaine Usell and Phyllis Comer at the then-Rancho Bernardo Joslyn Center (now Ed Brown Center for Active Adults). Comer coordinated the program during its first dozen years. After she retired, Radatz succeeded her. Those recognized for 15 years of service were Doris Goldstein, Bettie Jeli and Sharon Snyder. The 10-year awards were presented to Lois Goodman, Ginny Johnston,

Carole Mathios, Merv Adams and Janice Campagnolo were among the dozen volunteers honored for five years of service.

Among recipients of the 15-year awards were Sharon Snyder and Doris Goldstein. Brian Kratz, Bruce McCoy, Dan Norman and Lola Onstad. Volunteers honored for their five years of service were Merv Adams, Bob Bates, Janice Campagnolo, Ellen Farrow, Paul Giangrande, Carole Mathios, Liske McCormley, Margie Mopper, Jeannine Nordstrom, Mike Shidler, Carmen Whitehead and Kathy Yerrick. Joining Radatz in the awards presentation at Westwood Elementary School in Rancho

Bernardo were Eric Lehew representing Poway Unified School District and John Dunnicliff representing the OASIS Tutoring organization. Anyone — especially retirees — interested in volunteering for the 2017-18 academic year can contact Radatz at jradatz@att.net or 858-485-5449. Tutors do not need to have any teaching experience, are trained for free and pick the campus, day and time convenient to them.

Those present to receive their 10-year awards were Lois Goodman, Bruce McCoy, Ginny Johnston and Dan Norman.

SEEDS announces annual grants A local group of women has announced the awarding of two grants to organizations dedicated to assisting others in need. SEEDS, an acronym for “Sending Economic Encouragement to the Distressed,” is an evangelical group of women in the Poway, Rancho Bernardo and Escondido communities under the leadership of Mary Jenson. The local grant for 2017 was awarded to The College Area Pregnancy Services Center, which recently opened a third clinic serving an area from La Mesa to Pacific Beach. The money will be used to provide new equipment for the facility, which provides care and medical needs to women. The overseas organization selected for a grant is Helping Hands, a refugee center providing care for those who are fleeing distressed countries all over the world. The grant will be used to provide air conditioning/heating units for the center.

San Diego and overseas.” Past San Diego area recipients have included North County Solutions for Change, which gives help and hope to homeless families; Generate Hope, which gives help and healing to women who have been involved in human trafficking, and The Anchor

Moms: Cancel your membership today!

M

any of today’s moms have joined a club that John Rosemond calls “The Good Mommy Club.” In order to be a member in good standing, Good Mommies must spend the majority of their time thinking about, paying attention to and doing for their children. A good mommy believes that she is only as good as her kids are, that is, their accomplishments, or lack thereof, define her ability to successfully raise her children. If her children underperform, or make bad choices, Good Mommy wonders what she did wrong. If her children excel, it’s because she’s such a Good Mommy.

I hereby encourage well-intentioned mommies everywhere to tear up your Good Mommy card. The core problem with this way of thinking is that parenting is not deterministic, thanks to human’s free will. We all know kids whose parents were much less than wonderful, yet their children turned out just fine. Conversely, we all know children who made unfortunate choices that negatively impacted their future, yet their parents were more than adequate. While how we raise our children will definitely have an influence on the adults they become, it is not a guarantee, and all the groundwork you lay in

make mistakes and even fail. Anytime you step in to do for your kids what they can do themselves, you send a message that you don’t believe they can do it, and need your help. Recognize that there’s so much children can do for themselves, and then have them do it! (Note: if a child can operate an iPad, they can operate a washer and dryer.) When children start taking their first steps toward emancipation, moms can take their own emancipating steps towards re-energizing their marriage, renewing their friendships, re-engaging with their interests, and lowering their level of doing for their children. Everybody wins! Faucett is a retired teacher, Certified Leadership Parenting Coach trained and endorsed by Dr. John Rosemond, and San Diego County CASA. the dramatic increase in the number of “Good Mommies” enabling their children in the name of parental involvement. While I would never suggest that parents not be involved in their children’s lives, I will always encourage parents to butt out and back off. No one likes to be micro-managed, and by paying attention to and doing for our children the things that THEY should be paying attention to and doing for themselves, we are unwittingly setting them up to fail. By agonizing over their problems, we assume responsibility for those problems and quite frequently we assume the blame. If you remember that whoever shoulders the burden of a problem is the one who tries to solve said problem, you will understand the dynamic. Let your children wear that monkey on their back and take it off of yours. Let your children be the ones who tame and train that monkey as you give them the freedom to struggle, be disappointed,

their formative years may not have the effect you hoped for on the adult you give the world. Ultimately, moms and dads do not control what their children do with the lessons their parents taught. Therefore, parents should focus primarily on what they can control, namely their own lives, and not their children’s academic, athletic and social lives. As I’ve written in previous columns, the first two years of your child’s life require you to serve him. Once that baby is walking and talking, it’s time to reduce your servitude and increase your child’s independence. Anything they can do for

themselves should now be their responsibility. Moms are now able to step away from their children and pursue adult interests, while strengthening and renewing their relationship with their spouse. The marriage should return to the center of the family, while the parent-child relationship becomes secondary to the marriage. Children need adult role models who make being an adult look like a great thing! Children need their parents to be interesting people who do interesting things with interesting people. In direct contrast with the disdain for “adulting” that millennials seem to have, we want our children to look forward to doing adult things like opening their first checking account, job-hunting, dealing successfully with the DMV, signing their first lease, buying their first car – all signs of becoming a financially, legally and emotionally self-sufficient adult. After 30 years in the classroom, I can attest to

CITY COUNCIL DIGEST Meeting Tuesday night for one hour, the Poway City Council: - Approved a one-year extension for a previously approved tentative tract map calling for the development of 40 homes on mostly one-acre lots on 420 acres at 17150 Oak Coach Road, north of the Blue Sky Ecological Reserve. Ed and Barbara Malone are the property owners and applicants. - Introduced ordinances to create two undergrounding utility districts along a portion of Espola Road. The project, in the planning stages for over two years, calls for the undergrounding of overhead

San Diego Gas & Electric, Cox Communications and AT&T lines from Mountain Road to Northcrest Lane. A 6-foot-wide decomposed granite pathway will stretch from the existing sidewalk south of Mountain Road to the one south of Willow Ranch Road. Work is expect to begin early next year. - Approved fee increases to be charged by EDCO for waste and recycling services. The residential fee for a 35-gallon bin will increase 30 cents per month, to $14.92, while the fee for a 95-gallon bin will increase 43 cents, to $21.59. - Agreed to join with The Trust for

Public Land to apply for state grant funds to acquire 165 acres in the Van Dam Peak area, generally north of Poway Road and west of Pomerado Road. The projected acquisition cost is about $1.65 million. About $150,000 in city in-lieu habitat conservation funds would be needed to meet the grant’s matching fund requirement. - Recognized Deputy Laura Fajardo as the “Sheriff’s Station Deputy of the Month” for April. - Recognized members of the volunteer Quilts of Honor group for making hundreds of quilts for area veterans.

Poway Open Space, a group representing golfing members and some surrounding property owners, are heading a campaign to place for voter approval on the November ballot the proposed construction of the luxury housing development. The vote is required under the city’s Proposition FF because it will increase density on the land. This week the group published in the Poway News Chieftain a legal notice of intent to begin the initiative process. Poway Open Space will have up to six months to collect the valid signatures of 4,426 registered city voters. A conceptual site plan available for viewing Sunday calls for the homes to be built by CalAtlantic on 15 acres at the southern end of the 117-acre

private golf course. All related traffic will use StoneRidge Country Club Lane, which will be realigned to meet with Martincoit Road at Espola Road. The buildings will be two stories tall, with ground floor and second floor units. Elevators will serve the second floor units. The initiative will propose the 15 acres be rezoned as “residential condominiums,” the same zoning as in place for existing condos in the area. In addition, a special “StoneRidge overlay” will be added, allowing for golf, for the units to be for age 55-plus owners and for an additional 10 acres to be designed for roads, ponds, storm drainage and a HOA clubhouse (not to be confused with the public clubhouse). The site plan does not include tennis courts or a swimming pool; two

amenities now available to the club’s membership. Poway Open Space representatives said they simply ran out of space when trying to accommodate the new homes while maintaining an 18-hole, par-72 golf course. The existing clubhouse will be torn down and replaced with a 10,000-square-foot building slightly north of the existing structure. Plan proponents say the community will be asked for suggestions on how best to use the clubhouse space, which will be available to the public. Michael Schlesinger, head of No Stone Left Unturned, has agreed to pay for the costs of the requested special election, according to spokeswoman Sarah Ellis. All initiative campaign costs will be covered by Poway Open Space, she said.

Ground broken on Silvergate RB BY STEVE DREYER If all goes as planned, Rancho Bernardo’s first new retirement community in 30 years will be open for business in the fall of 2019. Several hundred prospective residents and community leaders gathered May 10 under a large tent for a groundbreaking and blessing ceremony at the 11-acre Bernardo Heights site where Silvergate Rancho Bernardo is to be built by AmeriCare Health and Retirement, Inc. The vacant parcel at 16061 Avenida Venusto had been owned for decades by the Poway Unified School District, but was sold to the company in 2013. Company officials said the groundbreaking marked the completion of nearly 3 ½ years of obtaining the necessary approvals from various city agencies. Company owner David Petree told the crowd that Rancho Bernardo will be the flagship project for AmeriCare, which owns and operates retirement communities in Fallbook and

San Marcos. He said that his son, Matt, is the Rancho Bernardo project manager. The company has been in business since 1984. The facility will be a mix of independent living, assisted living and memory care units. There will be 20 cottages, 132 apartments and 48 memory care units plus other amenities like a central clubhouse and dining facility. The units will be monthly rentals. The development is expected to employ about 100 people. A company representative said that 271 advance reservation deposits have been placed to date. Petree said the total represented over 300 interested individuals. Among those praising the project during the ceremonies was county Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, who quipped she seemed to be the only “non-senior” person in attendance. She called Silvergate a “great project” that will help serve the fastest-growing segment of the county’s population.

Work has started on a $1.5 million facade improvement project at the Poway Valley Center on Poway Road. Mark Hayden, vice president of the Carlsbad-based Capstone Advisors, owners of the property, said the extensive upgrading should be completed in September. He said several new tenants, including a 5,600-square-foot Little Spouts childcare business, will be moving into the retail center.

PUSD campus water to be tested for lead The Poway Unified School District this week began testing water for lead at 12 campuses, all in Poway. The tests will run through mid-June, according to a letter sent to parents. By law, the tests must be conducted while schools are in session. Tests will be conducted at the following sites: Chaparral, Garden Road, Midland, Painted Rock, Pomerado, Tierra Bonita and Valley elementary schools, Meadowbrook

and Twin Peaks midland schools, Abraxas and Poway high schools and the CTE/Adult Education campus. Water at each should will be tested at five locations. The PUSD will also be requesting lead testing for its remaining schools served by the City of San Diego (Rancho Bernardo, Sabre Springs and Rancho Penasquitos) and the Olivenhain Municipal Water District (4S Ranch.) These will be conducted

once schools resume in the fall. District spokeswoman Christine Paik said the requests for tests are simply precautionary. Water agencies will not charge the district for costs, she said. Testing will occur before the school day begins. If results indicate the presence of lead above allowable levels, the district will notify the school staff and students and take appropriate action.

Cancer survivor and event volunteer Anne O'Rourke shares her experience.

The first ceremonial lap at Lake Poway was walked by several dozen cancer survivors.

Walking to help others The Poway edition of the American Cancer Society 24-Hour Relay For Life was held Saturday and Sunday at Lake Poway, drawing 300 volunteers on 22 teams. The teams always had at least one member walking around the course. The event started with cancer survivors walking the ceremonial first lap. On Saturday night the course was lit by hand-decorated luminarias. Participants also viewed a slide show celebrating loved ones affected by cancer and enjoyed a Sunday morning breakfast. An estimated $46,000 was raised by the volunteers.

End exploitation of our children BY BRIAN MAIENSCHEIN In San Diego, child sex trafficking is big business. According to a University of San Diego study, the local child sex trade earns around $810 million annually for area criminals. For comparison’s sake, this is approximately the annual revenue generated by the San Diego Zoo. The average age when girls begin being sold for sex is 14 and 13 for boys. The younger the child is, the higher the price. Pimps brand the children with tattoos, like cattle. Pimps also exploit the bureaucratic foster care system so that, according to experts, nearly half the children being sexually exploited for money are recruited from this troubled system. It is nearly impossible to imagine something more deeply repugnant than the thriving multi-billion dollars in child sex trade in our region. Compassion won’t put an end to profitable businesses that thirstily recruits more children every year. To end this scourge we need to make it unprofitable, by doing two things: First, eliminate the demand. So-called “Johns” who pay to have sex with children know the likelihood of being criminally prosecuted is extremely unlikely. So, we need to let them know if they pay to rape a child, they risk being sued by the child-victim and by public prosecutors in civil court. Those lawsuits will take their homes, their bank accounts; everything. Civil lawsuits aren’t brought against these adults now because the lawsuits are too hard, with uncertain or puny monetary damages and procedures insensitive to children. Second, we need to permit the same kind of lawsuits against the crime lords that profit from child sex trafficking. This is why I have introduced my bill, AB 1495, The Commercial Child Rape Prevention Act, sponsored by the Children’s Advocacy Institute of the University of San Diego. AB 1495 enacts civil penalties of up to $50,000 per unlawful sexual act, available both to victims and public prosecutors who sue either “Johns” or pimps. If the child-victim sues and wins, the money is placed in a court-supervised trust for the child to be used for whatever is therapeutically needed to turn the child’s life around. If public prosecutors sue, the child-victims who are witnesses are first to receive the money with balances used for future civil lawsuits against child-sex trafficking businesses and their “John” customers. This will be accomplished by using the most child-sensitive legal procedures available. We often say that children are our future; that they are most precious treasure. If we are to back up this statement, we should use every legal option available to put an end to the child-rape business that shames our state and nation. We need to enact AB 1495. OUR READERS WRITE On the ‘decline’ of journalism Columnist Dick Lyles (May 4) is correct that journalism is in decline in America. It began when Rupert Murdoch became the dominant force in daily newspapers. Then there is his operation of Fox News that slants whatever he feels should be addressed and how to address it. He was found in Great Britain to be of the lowest caliber of journalist in that country for snooping into the lives of people who the country revered and was fined for this sort of unlawful behavior. Now he is spreading his vile journalism in America. People who go to websites that they think are giving them the inside track are also finding vile, unfounded lies that are then spread as truth. Lyles himself did exactly that when a past column quoted a source that was purported to be of importance and was proved to be a total lie. There is news and there is opinion. The two should be separated as such. Shirley Cooper Rancho Bernardo In response to Mr. Lyles: I believe journalism will save this country. Today's journalists will follow in the footsteps of the great Woodward and Bernstein, who also spoke at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. Because we now have a liar-in-chief as president, Lyles doesn’t like that much of the media reports those lies and exposes this man for what he is, “a

pathological liar,” to quote Ted Cruz. The “lack of integrity” and “arrogance” Lyles complains about in journalists really are qualities at which this president excels. Lyles writes about the distrust of totalitarian regimes and yet he makes no mention of Trump's admiration of totalitarians like Putin, Duterte and Erdogan. Perhaps he wasn’t aware that the correspondents’ dinner also provides scholarships for young journalists and has been entertained by a comic roast for more than a decade. Hasan Minhaj did an excellent job skewering all of the media of all viewpoints. He was hysterically funny and connected his jokes and remarks eloquently to the First Amendment. From his remarks: “... this event is about celebrating the First Amendment and free speech. Free speech is the foundation of an open and liberal democracy. From college campuses to the White House, only in America can a first-generation, Indian-American Muslim kid get on this stage and make fun of the president. The orange man behind the Muslim ban. And it’s a sign to the rest of the world. It’s this amazing tradition that shows the entire world that even the president is not beyond the reach of the First Amendment. But the president didn’t show up. Because Donald Trump doesn’t care about free speech. The man who tweets everything that enters his head refuses to acknowledge the amendment that allows him to do it... And I’m proud that all of us are here tonight to defend that right, even if the man in the White House never would.” Deborah Boyd Poway

Changes in the neighborhood

America’s lack of empathy

M

y wife and I are among the fortunate ones who live on Poway's Robison Boulevard. I say fortunate because we have been told ours is the only “boulevard” in the entire city. As impressive as that may sound, turns out we also have trackside seats to the only drag racing strip in town. It's true. When I first arrived here in 1998, I used to think all those hordes of motorists descended upon our street for the sole purpose of admiring our modest plebian houses and efficient, Spartan landscaping. Not so, it seems. I have since come to learn that 99.9 percent of them employ the city's only “boulevard” for the sole purpose of evading the intersection of Poway and Pomerado roads. I have also come to discover there is apparently no speed limit when one is using a short cut through someone else's neighborhood. Forget Disneyland. If it is thrills you seek, check out the Robison Boulevard International Speedway. My personal favorite is jumping out of the way of a rapidly accelerating, rocket sled-like automobile while crossing the street in front of my own house with three dogs on leashes pulling simultaneously in three different directions! Good wholesome fun for the whole family! Until two weeks ago, we even had our own neighborhood store as well. But on May 7, the only Rite-Aid Pharmacy in Poway closed its doors for the final time. I call it a

neighborhood store because that is exactly what it was. Located on the eastern-most corner of the Poway Plaza shopping complex, the Rite Aid was less than a minute away from anywhere on the speedway. There was always plenty of parking, more-often-than-not directly in front of the store. They carried a very wide variety of items, not least among them the cheapest beer in town. On a hot day, the popular, old fashioned ice cream counter was sometimes two and three deep. Forgot Valentine's Day? No problem. Rite-Aid always had greetings cards, chocolates, and roses. I grew up back east and we had neighborhood stores everywhere. Here is the thing about neighborhood stores. Since you go there so often, the employees know you and you know them. They welcome you. When you get to the checkout counter, you are expected to joke with them like family. A neighborhood store is friendly and comfortable, kind of like that bar in the TV show Cheers, only with soap, toilet paper, and Metamucil. I suppose some other business will eventually replace the Rite-Aid. But it is unlikely there will ever be another real neighborhood store in that space. We have superstores now. It seems the small neighborhood store is slowly going the way of the milkman. We will miss them. Cronin is a Poway resident and the safety officer at MCAS Miramar.

M

ost Americans want basically the same things: general prosperity, a reasonably well-educated populace that is steadily becoming healthier, a responsive government that is neither bloated nor corrupt, a social environment that is both safe and free and a sustainable natural environment. However, the political arena through which most of this must be achieved is now so hopelessly divided that our chances of attaining and sustaining these ends are next to nil. The culprit nourishing these divisions is an almost total lack of human empathy on a society level. Politicians, members of the media and ordinary citizens passed beyond self-serving selfishness a long time ago. Now our nation’s politics are driven by people at all ends of the political spectrum who range from being willfully insensitive to boldly contemptuous toward anyone with whom they disagree. Most are anesthetized to the problems, sufferings or even needs and concerns of just about anyone else. According to a recent study from Michigan State University, America’s empathy is on the decline, now ranking No. 7 in the world. The number of young Americans who will never marry continues to rise. Volunteering is at its lowest rate since the Labor Department began measuring it in 2002. More than 30 percent of school children report they have been bullied, up 24 percent from 10 years ago. Lack of empathy in America extends far beyond the political arena. Although we should be concerned about the lack of empathy in every dimension of our lives, our major concern should be about its lack in the political sphere. The disdain people have for those who don’t share their views is beyond worrisome. It has led to complete nonexistence of bi-partisan political debate or collaborative problem solving. It has been a long time since debates about important issues have been driven primarily by compassion for human suffering. Debates on such

issues as health care and immigration reform have long been devoid of any meaningful assessments regarding the impact of various decisions on individuals and families. People would rather insult those with whom they disagree rather than debate serious policy that might lead to lasting solutions. Opinion columnists (like me) see it all the time. Only a small percentage of people who disagree with my opinions take the time to formulate a reasonable rebuttal. Most simply attack me personally and the attacks completely lack empathy. I’m regularly accused of being unpatriotic, although I’m a lifetime disabled vet who served my country honorably in combat and love this country more than most. I’ve also been called racist, although I have track record of fighting for equal opportunity since the early 1970s. I could go on, but this is not about me. It is about how people would rather attack me and people like me, than learn who I am as a person and join in my efforts to make the world a better place. Unfortunately, given America’s mood today, people are drawn to discourse that is uncivil and even rude. Whether online, on TV (cable or broadcast), talk radio, or in political campaigns, the almost complete lack of empathy is blatant. Hardly anyone is interested in calming down, considering what it is like to walk in another’s shoes, or to even mildly entertain the notion that someone else may feel the way they do for valid reasons. Too many Americans thrive on outrage, angry passion and personal insults. If we hope to achieve the ideals listed in my opening sentence then we must insist on and participate in an empathic assessment of the world’s challenges as well as what responses are appropriate. Poway’s Jim Bennet reaches 300-win mark Achivement ‘snuck up’ on softball coach BY TERRY MONAHAN Jim Bennet, who was the junior varsity coach for seven years, took over a Poway softball program that had just won its first San Diego Section championship in 2002. Bennet replaced Jeff Lusk as the varsity coach, but kept Lusk’s philosophy untouched. “Keep moving forward so that we had a chance to be there every year,’’ Bennet said recently. “That’s all Jeff wanted to do and I wanted that as well. “La Costa Canyon was a premier program at the time. We wanted to emulate their consistency.’’ Under Bennet, the Titans have been that model and then some. Now in his 15th varsity season, Bennet surpassed a milestone on May 3 with his 300th victory, courtesy of a 16-13 win at Mt. Carmel.

For five innings, it looked as if the celebration would be put off to the next game. Mt. Carmel bolted to a 6-2 after one inning and pushed ahead 12-4 after two innings. The score was 13-5 in favor of the Sundevils entering the top of the sixth inning. With just six outs left, the Titans brought home 11 runs. “I’m so proud of what they did that day,’’ Bennet said. “We talk about grinding out 21 outs every day and never giving up. That one game epitomized what we wanted to do with this program.’’ After the victory, Bennet told his players about the 300-win milestone. “We’ve had a lot of coachable players and good coaches along the way,’’ Bennet said. “Everyone bought in to being in the hunt every year. “You aren’t going to win it all every year,

but we want to be a factor in who does win.’’ Poway was 16-13 in his first season in 2003 and Bennet has never had a losing season with the Titans. Heading into this week’s postseason, Bennet’s Titans once again hit the 20-win mark for the eighth time. Poway has won four league titles and the 2015 San Diego Section Open Division title thanks to a 1-0 win over Cathedral Catholic in the championship game, the third title appearance for Bennet-coached team. Bennet’s first win came in 2003 against Oceanside 9-0 in the Cougar Classic. Win No. 200 was a 4-3 win over El Camino in 14 innings. “All the wins say we have been consistent,’’ Bennet said. “We’ve been to the quarterfinals, semis and finals, I think, 14 times. We’re there

every single year.’’ Bennet went to San Diego State and decided he didn’t want to leave. While working as a ground worker for the old PSA airlines at Lindbergh Field, he began substituting in the Poway Unified School District. “I heard Poway was a good district from the guys I worked with loading and unloading cargo,’’ Bennet said. “They had kids going to school there.’’ In 1995, he became the freshman softball coach. He coached the JV girls basketball team at Poway for 20 seasons before retiring from that post in 2016. He retired from teaching - Meadowbrook and Bernardo Heights middle schools - in 2011. “I never thought about piling up wins,’’ Bennet said. “Our goal was to win 20 games a year. The 300 wins is just a by-product of that philosophy. Yes, 300 wins snuck up on me.’’

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Nighthawks’ tennis duo soars to league title BY TERRY MONAHAN Both Patrick Trhac and Peter Stratton were playing soccer when they were introduced to the game of tennis. It wasn’t very long before they abandoned soccer. Stratton, a junior at Del Norte, was searching for a sport to play during the soccer offseason. Trhac, a 6-foot-5 Nighthawk senior, likes tennis for a different reason. “I liked being a one-man army,’’ he said. “In other sports, team sports, you have to depend on someone else. “In tennis, I’m by myself. There’s no pressure to work well with someone else. “I liked soccer, but I liked tennis much more.’’ Despite a gimpy hamstring that sidelined Stratton for more than a month twice since November, the Nighthawks pair connected just in time for the Palomar League Tournament. Stratton and Trhac claimed the league’s double championship, beating Mike

and Jay Blando from Rancho Bernardo 6-0, 6-0. Not without a lot of rehabilitation, though. That involved a much deeper commitment to yoga for Stratton as a way of gaining some flexibility in his troublesome left hamstring. His latest injury cost him six weeks and another three weeks to play himself back into top shape. “I used to stretch a little, but I never took yoga seriously until I got hurt,’’ Stratton said. “I enjoy it enough now to do it a few times a week. “The physical therapist said I was under-stretching, so I gave a yoga a better effort than I did back in eighth grade the first time I went. “It felt weird the first few times. Most everyone else in the class was a woman and I was the least flexible person there. That didn’t dawn on me until it was too late.’’ Stratton has even tried to persuade Trhac to give yoga a

serious try. “Maybe one day,’’ Trhac said. “I do want more flexibility. Every athlete should look at yoga for that very reason. “It’s very difficult to do. You have to want to make it work.’’ Stratton and Trhac enter this week’s CIF Individual Tournament as the No. 3 seed in doubles. Del Norte has never had any player earn a berth in the singles or doubles championship matches. “Patrick and his brother won the Avocado East League title by beating Peter and his partner and reached the semis one year before losing to a team from Torrey Pines,’’ Del Norte coach Cherise Meoli said. Now, Trhac has one more shot with Stratton with just three matches together under their belts. “I’ve played against him for three years, so I know how he plays, his tendencies,’’ Trhac said. “We know each other’s styles.

Playoff loss fails to dampen ‘great’ PHS lacross season BY TERRY MONAHAN The last time Poway reached the San Diego Section girls lacrosse championship game was so long ago, none of the current players were even in high school. Poway, which won CIF titles in 2002 behind CIF Player of the Year Megan O’Connor, 2003 behind Player of the Year Claire Thomas and 2006 behind CIF player of the Year Brandi Jones, returned to the finals last week for the first time since 2012. Unfortunately, the No. 3-seeded Titans (19-3) ran into undefeated Torrey Pines, the No. 1 seed, and dropped a 15-5 decision at the San Dieguito Academy. It finished off a 23-0 season for Torrey Pines. That loss may have ended the season for the Titans, but it did not dampen their sense of accomplishment with a school record for wins, eclipsing the old mark of 15 in a season “This was not a good season,’’ coach Sarah Krahenbuhl said. “This turned out to be a great season. “It was a huge accomplishment just to play in the finals. The girls earned

Poway Symphony Orchestra

that shot at upsetting Torrey Pines. “Any time you’re the underdog, you have to believe you can do it. We came away with no regrets.’’ Poway took a 2-1 lead in the first half on one of two goals by sophomore Camdyn O’Donnell before the Falcons went on a scoring spree to take complete control of the match. “In the first 10 minutes, we believed we could do it,’’ senior Isabelle Flud said. “They pulled away, but we kept playing until the end.’’ Then came the reality for the six seniors that this was their final game for Poway. That moment always seemed to be far off in the future. For Flud, it came crashing down on her and her teammates. “There were a lot of tears after the game was over,’’ Flud said. “It was really rough walking off the field for the last time since I’ve been playing with some of my teammates for four or five years now. “We walked off with our heads high. We poured our hearts into that game.’’ Senior Sierra Hanson scored two goals for Poway, matching O’Donnell.

Flud scored the other goal. Flud finished with 87 goals and 30 assists this season followed by O’Donnell with 63 goals and 30 assists, senior Erin Dunn with 43 goals and 57 assists, Hansen with 42 goals and 21 assists and senior Tatum Chapman with 31 goals as Poway outscored opponents 310-148. Their playing days, however, are far from done. Flud is heading to San Diego State, where she hopes to major in sports medicine in hopes of one day being a physical therapist. Dunn will be off to Chapman and Hansen is going to Adams State in Colorado. “I knew we had an incredible opportunity in front of us,’’ said Krahenbuhl. “I told the girls how amazing it was to be in the championship game. “Be grateful to be in something that was bigger than just you.’’ On Sunday, less than 24 hours after the championship game, Krahenbuhl, a special education teacher at Poway, accepted her master’s degree from San Diego State.

Prep softball teams enter playoffs Titans defeat Broncos at Lake Poway Audrey Braun’s total contribution to Poway’s run up to the San Diego Section Open Division championship game last spring was just 19 innings. This year, the senior right-hander help not only pitch the Titans to the Palomar League championship, but she was the winning pitcher as the starter in the annual Game at the Lake on Friday against rival Rancho Bernardo at Lake Poway to conclude the regular season. Braun went 5.1 innings and allowed just two runs only one run was earned - and made 61 pitches as Poway downed the Broncos 4-2 to take an 11-10 edge in the Lake series. That victory also propelled Poway (21-6-1, 9-1) to the No. 4 seed in this year’s Open Division, which was to begin play Wednesday at home against No. 5 Mater Dei Catholic (23-6). Every team in the Open Division has won at least 21 games. Poway is 3-1 against Open Division teams, beating Rancho Buena Vista (No. 6) and Mater Dei (No. 5) while splitting with Ramona (No. 1). “This is, by far, the strongest eight-team Open field ever,’’ said Poway coach Jim Bennet. “Every team has solid pitching. It wouldn’t surprise me to see a lower seed beat a higher seed. “It wouldn’t shock me to see No. 6 vs. No. 8 in the finals, that’s how good this division is. “You could play two great playoff games in this division and go home with two losses.’’ SEE SOFTBALL, B5

Against Rancho Bernardo (15-9, 6-4), the Titans took advantage of wildness to score three first-inning runs. Sydney Steele tripled in two of those runs. Poway added another run in the fourth on Steele’s infield single. Besides Steele’s 2-for-3, freshman designated player Paige Donnelly was also 2-for-3. Braun, now 10-2, allowed one runner into scoring position until the sixth inning when an error led to two runs. Alexa Jury got the final five outs. “I’m so happy to have won league and win on Senior Night,’’ Braun said. “I came into the season not expecting to pitch much. I knew I’d worked really hard, but I wasn’t sure it was enough. “I want to win from here on out so badly. I may get a little nervous in the playoffs.’’

Rancho Bernardo

The Broncos gained the No. 5 seed in Division I following the second loss this season to Poway. Rancho Bernardo, which got just five hits against Braun on Friday, will host No. 12 Escondido (10-17-2) on Tuesday in a play-in game. The winner advances to the first round on Thursday at highest seed. Sophomore second baseman Malea Maynard drove in both Broncos’ runs against Poway with a sixth-inning single.

Del Norte

The Nighthawks (12-15) are seeded No. 7 in Division II and also has a play-in game Tuesday at home against No. 10 Valhalla (10-16-1). Del Norte, who handed Poway its only loss in league play, came into the playoffs off a 13-1 win over Mission Vista in the regular-season finale after dropping a 5-2 decision to Poway for the league title clincher. A 2-1 loss to Steele Canyon in eight innings knocked out the Nighthawks in the third round of last year’s playoffs.

Two music groups to perform together in Poway on Sunday Guest violin soloist will be Misha Vayman

BY ELIZABETH MARIE HIMCHAK The Poway Symphony Orchestra and the Poway Community Choir will present their first combined concert on Sunday. “I’m really kind of excited because it opens possibilities to do larger works,” said John LoPiccolo, the orchestra’s music director for the past three years. “I’ve always wanted to do (a performance) with the chorus, so my antenna was up looking for opportunities to work with the choir.” LoPiccolo said the venture was not planned at the beginning of the groups’ seasons, but he and choir director Nancy Gray have been discussing the possibility for awhile. Monday night was the first time the choir’s 30-plus singers and orchestra’s 40-plus musicians rehearsed together, along with guest violin soloist Misha Vayman from Los Angeles. “It is a great (challenge), but we are all excited by it,” LoPiccolo said before the rehearsal.

FILE PHOTO

The Poway Symphony Orchestra will perform in a combined concert with the Poway Community Choir on Sunday at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. He met Vayman four years ago during a strings intensive at the Heifetz International Music Institute. The program was for around 80 “brilliant string players” selected via audition, LoPiccolo said, adding he was very impressed after hearing Vayman play the violin. The two stayed in touch over the years and this is their first project

together. “We hit it off and now I hope to hit it off musically with him,” LoPiccolo said. The 4 p.m. Sunday, May 21 concert will be held at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road. It will be under two hours, including intermission, LoPiccolo said.

Tickets are $15 for general admission, $12 for seniors and $10 for students. Purchase in advance at PowaySymphony.org or at the door starting one hour before the concert. The concert will have each group performing individually and together, LoPiccolo said. It will begin with the choir singing five contemporary pieces under the

direction of Gray. The choir will then be joined on stage by the orchestra, and LoPiccolo will conduct both groups for Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Hallelujah” from Christ on the Mount of Olives, Op. 85 and Johannes Brahms’ “How Lovely is Thy Dwelling Place” from A German Requiem, Op. 45 IV. After intermission the orchestra’s individual portion will feature two movements of George Friedrich Händel’s “Water Music Suite.” It will conclude with the orchestra accompanying Vayman for Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 26. The orchestra and choir are both run through the Poway Unified School District’s Adult Education Department. The orchestra began in 2004 and consists of community members, high school and college students, music educators and professional musicians. The Poway Community Choir is similarly composed of locals and it formed in early 2016. For more information and to register for the orchestra’s or choir’s next session, go to the Poway Adult School website at PowayAdultSchool.com or call 858-668-4024.

Ramona Rodeo weekend celebrates patriotic heritage BY MAUREEN ROBERTSON Flags will be flying high as Ramona Outdoor Community Center celebrates 37 years of Ramona Rodeo this weekend. With “Home of the Free, Because of the Brave” as its theme, the rodeo promises top-notch Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association shows in the Fred Grand Arena Friday through Sunday. Grand marshals of the Main Street Parade on Saturday morning will be retired and active-duty members of the military who will lead the parade in a 72-passenger, double-decker bus donated by Realtor Kurt Myers. “Anybody who’s ever served our country – they are the grand marshals,” said Ramona Rodeo chair Chris Anderson. Among the grand marshals will be Ret. U.S. Navy Lt. David G. Rehmann, a prisoner of war in North Vietnam for 75 months, from December 1966 to Feb. 12, 1973. “We are so blessed to have this brave man with us on the 20th,” said Anderson. “He was held 2,265 days.” The parade will start at 10 a.m. and go along Main Street from 13th to Fifth streets. Rodeo shows will start at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. on Sunday. Gates open an hour and a half earlier. Tickets are available at the gate and in advance at Ramona Albertsons, Boot Barn of El Cajon, and www.ramonarodeo.com. A free dance featuring the Patrick Howard Trampus Band will follow the Friday and Saturday rodeos. Competitive events include bull riding,

Bullfighter Dusty Duba will be at this weekend's Ramona Rodeo. saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, bareback riding, tie-down roping, team roping, and barrel racing. National Finals Rodeo Specialty Act winner Bobby Kerr will bring his Mustang Act into the arena, and trick-roping, gun-spinning, and whip-cracking Rider Kiesner will also provide entertainment. Bullfighters Dusty Duba and Joe Butler will clown around while they make sure

the bull riders stay safe, and announcer Bob Edmonds will provide up-to-the-minute details of the action in the arena. Sunday is Kids Day, with prizes for the first 100 youngsters in the arena when the gates open at 2:30 p.m. Four Here with HOPE families facing the challenge of childhood cancer will be among Sunday guests.

“It is our intention to bring awareness of Here with HOPE to our community,” said Kayla Duba, rodeo production coordinator. “This is an incredible organization with a mission that I think anyone can appreciate. We encourage everyone to visit their website and see how they can become involved.” Youngsters too young to ride professionally will hang onto their assigned sheep for as long as they can in Mutton Bustin’ fun at each rodeo. Presented by the Ramona Outdoor Community Center, Ramona Rodeo also offers an array of vendors and food. Miss Rodeo California Brittney Phillips returns to her hometown of Ramona for the weekend, and 2017 Ramona Rodeo Queen Ashley McDonald will join rodeo royalty from other communities who will sign autographs and share their knowledge of the rodeo way of life. Ramona may be geographically in the center of San Diego County, but its rural lifestyle isn’t the surf and sand image people may have of San Diego residents, said Anderson. “Take for example the Ramona Rodeo,” she said. “It’s our 37th annual and truly a highlight of the year for me. It really gives you a great feeling. It’s so American, makes you feel patriotic and reflects on our heritage. Even our theme, ‘Land of the Free, Because of the Brave,’ brings that home. Our town comes together for a family fun event, and I think that’s pretty dang cool.” The rodeo grounds are at 421 Aqua Lane. More information about Ramona Rodeo is at www.ramonarodeo.com.

the City of Poway for the purpose of proposing, to the voters of the City of Poway, amendments to the City’s General Plan and “Zoning and General Plan Land Use” Map. A statement of the reasons of the proposed action as contemplated in the petition is as follows: The existing golf course and open space uses on the property generally located in the north Poway area on Espola Road between Valle Verde Road and Cloudcroft Drive (the “Property”) can be supported, maintained, and enhanced by allowing a limited number of residential condominiums and amenities for residents over the age of 55, subject to state and federal law. This initiative therefore amends the City of Poway General Plan and the official zoning map of the City of Poway, as referenced in Section 17.06.020 of the Poway Municipal Code and reflected on the City’s “Zoning & General Plan Land Use Map,” to change the Property’s General Plan and zoning category designations from Open Space Recreation (OS-R) to Residential Condominium (RC), and to attach a new Stoneridge Overlay (SO) General Plan designation to the Property, in order to allow a limited number of residences and ancillary uses on the Property, which will complement the existing golf course and clubhouse. /s/ Mitchell E. CITY OF POWAY NOTICE INVITING BIDS Sealed bids will be received at Poway City Hall, 13325 Civic Center Drive, Poway, CA 92064, Customer Services Counter – 1st Floor, until 4:00 p.m. on

The city attorney has prepared the following title and summary of the chief purpose and points of the proposed measure: Ballot Title AN INITIATIVE TO AMEND THE CITY OF POWAY GENERAL PLAN TO ADD THE STONERIDGE OVERLAY ZONE, AND TO AMEND THE ZONING AND GENERAL PLAN LAND USE MAP OF THE CITY OF POWAY TO REDESIGNATE A PORTION OF THE STONERIDGE COUNTRY CLUB FROM OPEN SPACE-RECREATION TO RESIDENTIAL CONDOMINIUM WITH THE STONERIDGE OVERLAY ZONE Summary The purpose of the proposed initiative is to allow the development of not more than 25 acres of a portion of the existing Stoneridge Country Club into not more than 180 residential condominium units for residents over the age of 55. The proposed measure would (1) amend the Community Development Element of the City of Poway General Plan to establish and define a Stoneridge Overlay (SO); (2) amend the Public Facilities Element of the City of Poway General Plan to modify the description of the “Stoneridge Country Club” by (a) eliminating references to the facility as a 117 acre private country club, (b) eliminating the swim and tennis facility elements of the country club; and (c) eliminating references to the country club as a site for an LPGA event; (3) amend Table IV-2 (captioned, “Private Recreational Facilities”) of the Public Facilities Element of the City of Poway General Plan to recognize the potential reduction in the country club’s acreage consistent with the initiative; and (4) modify the land use categories for the country club by amending the Zoning & General Plan Land Use Map of the City of Poway to change the designation of the approximately southern one-half of Stoneridge Country Club from Open Space-Recreation (OS-R) to Residential Condominium (RC) subject to the limitations of the proposed Stoneridge Overlay. Voter approval for the proposed change in zoning from Open SpaceRecreation (OS-R) to residential Condominium (RC) is required by section 17.23.120 of the Poway Municipal Code, commonly known as Proposition FF. Ask Mr. Marketing BY ROB WEINBERG

I couldn’t do this without you

T

he strangest thing happened at last week’s chamber networking event. Introducing myself to two women, one said to the other “I know Rob. He’s a celebrity, and very well known around these parts.” Actually, I’m an incredibly minor celebrity, but appreciated the recognition. In fact I’m always surprised when strangers greet me. I guess these things happen after 500 columns. Eleven years after we started our dialogue I’ve apparently developed a following. For this I’m both grateful and nonplussed. When asked why they read my column, folks typically explain “You make marketing accessible to people who know nothing about it.” My bride keeps my head from swelling. One can’t have an inflated ego when emptying the trash. While still unsure why you’re reading this, I do know marketing impacts everyone. It persuades us to try this soap or vote for that candidate. We’re all increasingly manipulated and I want to help educate those around me. And the dialogue has been two-ways. A steady stream of ideas flow from well-meaning readers. These conversations oftentimes begin with “You should write a column about …” followed by suggestions like sex, drugs and rock and roll. Which provided a great idea for a novel, but

didn’t give me a message for this week. So how about this: Thanks for your help. Thanks for the guidance about ideas you’d like explored, researched and explained. And thanks for expanding my comfort zone. Because when you say “Write about Donald Trump,” I know: 1) I don’t write a political column. 2) I must find marketing angles or a new subject. 3) I can’t portray my personal feelings if I’m going to be honest and fair. So, if there’s an issue you’d like to see examined, send in the idea and your thoughts how it relates to marketing, communications or sales. Between us, perhaps we can interest others in the community. Naturally I can’t just write to help promote your business unless you’re doing something really different, marketing-wise. Unless you’re promoting Panama hats, of course. Then, let’s talk. But whatever the subject, odds are excellent there’s a marketing angle to it. If you submit it and I write about it, you’ll get full credit. After all, I’m obviously not THAT brilliant all the time! With that said, I wish you a week of profitable marketing. Submit your ideas at www.askmrmarketing.com.

Contract Carpet owner Susie Dixon in the Carmel Mountain Ranch store.

It’s all about family at Contract Carpet BY JESSICA KING Like the homes they help make cozier, the owners of Contract Carpet are all about family. Contract Carpet is a full-serve flooring company with showrooms in Carmel Mountain Ranch and Encinitas. “It’s myself, my husband, and our son Nick and daughter Stacey, as well as some very special people who have been with us a very long time and who are like family to us,” said owner Susie Dixon. She and her husband, Marty, started the company in 1985 when Nick was a young child and Stacey was only a day old. Contract Carpet offers carpet, tile, stone, wood, laminate and vinyl floor coverings, as well as area rugs. The business also offers a custom window covering service to help match a new floor covering choice. “Customer service is the most important part of what we do and always has been,” said Dixon. “We like to educate our customers and make sure that what they’re looking at is the right fit for them.” According to Dixon, Marty, especially, will turn down business rather than sell someone something they don’t really need. “They trust him because he is genuine,” said Dixon, adding that because of Marty’s honest approach, most of the people who use Contract Carpet services are either repeat customers or someone who has been referred to the business by a past customer. Adding to its appeal, Contract Carpet also offers free estimates and guarantees all labor. “Our installers are really talented, skilled craftsmen,” Dixon said. “We couldn’t have been so successful without them.” The Dixons also can attribute some success to Susie’s father, who was in the business long before the couple ventured out on their own. Marty worked for his father-in-law’s flooring company before it was closed, then

BUSINESS PROFILE pondered the idea of opening his own shop. “He wanted to do it for a while but you know, when you’re young and just getting the family started and trying to save, it’s hard,” Dixon said of her husband. “Then, I’ll never forget when we were in the hospital and I had just had our daughter, our youngest, he said. ‘That’s it, I’m doing it,’ and the very next day, he went out and got us started in Encinitas.” The family expanded with the Carmel Mountain Ranch location in 1994. With more than three decades of business behind them, the Dixons could have easily branch out with even more locations. However, according to Dixon, it’s their commitment to customer service and the idea of only having employees who are more like family that has kept the company at just two locations. Though most of the business revolves around residential customers, Contract Carpet also caters to commercial clientele. It also specializes in fire and water damage needs. Contract Carpet is a member of the San Diego Floor Covering Association, the San Diego Better Business Bureau, the North San Diego Business Chamber, the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and the World Floor Covering Association. The 1,000-square-foot Carmel Mountain Ranch showroom is at 11658 Carmel Mountain Road, Suite 130, while the 1,500-square-foot Encinitas showroom is located at 191 N. El Camino Real, Suite 112. Both showrooms are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays. To learn more, visit www.contractcarpet.com or call (858) 451-9717.

Create a perfect outdoor escape in your backyard (StatePoint) If there’s anything better than heating up the grill and chilling drinks with close friends late into a summer evening, it’s decorating the space in which it all takes place. As with all things summer, refreshing your outdoor space calls for a simple, relaxed approach. Here are a few ideas for making a quick splash. Less is more, sometimes As fun as it is to design for new things, subtraction is often where the real opportunity is hiding. Make a tired space feel new again by donating, repurposing or storing items that simply don’t serve a purpose or add anything visually. Rethinking arrangements There’s more to design than placing chairs around a table or fire pit. Striking the right balance takes some intentionality and thought. Incorporating strong elements of symmetry and repetition can do as much toward establishing a relaxing, inviting tone as an eclectic playlist or perfectly plated appetizers. Identifying the focal point is a key early step. Often in backyard settings, it’s a permanent feature, such as a particular view, landscape design or fire pit. When this isn’t an option, or if the area serves a specific purpose such as dining, furniture can be used to create the same conversational effect. Color and pattern Most permanent fixtures and large outdoor furniture pieces trend traditional. Adding flourishes with vibrant contrasting seat cushions and boldly patterned throw pillows is a quick way to express personality. To customize your space, check out the

As with all things summer, refreshing your outdoor space calls for a simple, relaxed approach. Improvements line of outdoor furniture cushions and pillows, which offers an array of lively styles, patterns and color combinations. Their step-by-step outdoor cushion measuring guide makes finding the right-sized cushion easy, and quick and simple video instructions take the guesswork out of the process, ensuring the proper fit. For more information, visit improvementscatalog.com. Lighten up One of the easiest ways to dramatically enhance an outdoor setting is often overlooked

-- lighting. Good lighting boosts safety and security. After all, summer is the season for tripping over pavers in the dark. And a thoughtful approach can be transformative -from illuminating paths through the backyard to setting a relaxing tone for a patio. Many solutions, such as higher-voltage lighting systems, call for a contractor’s expertise. Even some lower-voltage systems will require some additional equipment for proper energy control. To keep it simple, solar is the way to go. Just

make sure the photovoltaic cell is positioned to collect maximum sunlight during the day so it’s ready to shine through the night. For example, the new Provence solar post and path lights from Improvements are a good way to accent landscaping while keeping pathways safe. Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all template for the perfect backyard summer sanctuary. But with a creative mindset and a clear vision, you can transform your backyard into a unique casual space.
