10 Ways to Beat Holiday Stress

hether your holiday stress is caused by Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or New Year’s Eve, there are ways to ease the pressure so you can actually enjoy the holiday. Here are 10 tips for Happier Holidays. (P.S. They also work all year round).

1 2 3

HIDE: It works nearly every time. If you need a little break, admit it and seek refuge. Go to a private place and take a few long deep breaths and sing your favorite holiday tune to regroup. Rehearse the worst, then, if it happens, you’ve already made advance preparations. And since the worst seldom happens, you can make a game out of what does. Get organized early. List all your holiday chores: cards if you send them, decorating the house, gifts, special cooking, wrapping, mailing and shopping. Just listing everything you have to do will help you to feel less harried. Set a schedule, and do a little every day. Check items off your list as you complete them. This will show you your progress. Address a card or two per day. Wrap a present while you watch a favorite TV show. Remember, procrastination is the real “Grinch” who stole Christmas.

4

Reinstate the draft; get everyone in the house to help. Share the fun, share the duties. Children, too ... just confine them to one room so if they make a mess you only have one room to redecorate come spring.

5

Use modern innovations to make your traditions easier. Say you have five dozen cookies to send in with Johnny or Mary for the school party. Throw away the “from scratch” recipe. Buy a tube of ready mix cookie dough, and cook them two minutes less than the directions say (it makes them chewy). Put some sprinkles on the cookies and swear the children to secrecy. This creates little mess and is fast.

6 7 8 9 10

Moderation, and “this too will pass.” No matter what we think to the contrary, there will only be 31 days in December this year. If things get rough, start the count down. Look forward to something in January, like December being over. Use moderation in eating, drinking and spending. You don’t want a head, belt or debt hangover. Empathy works when you think the world is out to get you. Look around. There are undoubtedly others who are worse off. If you see someone struggling, offer to help, if appropriate. Focus on what you do have, and count your blessings. Remember, love is free to share. And, it comes in unlimited supply to those who use it. QTIP: The next time you’re in a holiday traffic jam, stuck in a slow checkout line, or your online order doesn’t go through, remember QTIP, and quit taking it personally. The checkout line isn’t there to drive you crazy. The stoplight is not a part of a plan to ruin your day. Don’t get upset about what is beyond your control. Contrarian shoppers start early and end early. Take an early lunch and shop on off-days at the mall. Shop online, the prices are often good, and many online stores now include free shipping. What can’t you find at Amazon? Have a detailed list of gifts with alternates if your first choice isn’t available. Consider shopping year round for the holidays. Often, summer sales mean better gifts at a lower price next year. The Chemistry of Joy will see you through. There is an actual chemistry of joy and happiness that occurs within us. It is a chemical reaction caused by signals our brain gives to our autonomic nervous system. A positive, happy outlook triggers immune strengthening responses in our body. Laugh, enjoy humor, sing and think about the joy you give to others and the joy that others give you.

Test your knowledge of popular Christmas movies (MCC) What would the holidays be without snowflakes falling outside, a mug of hot cocoa in hand and a favorite Christmas movie on television? Television is full of feel-good movies come the holiday season. Choose from among classic flicks you have watched year after year or new movies vying for spots as soon-to-be favorites. Watching Christmas movies is a holiday tradition for many families. So much so that lines from popular movies are easily remembered and recognized. Those who can recite movies verbatim might enjoy testing their mettle with the following Christmas quiz loaded with memorable quotes from some holiday classics.

Movie Quotes Quiz 1. “It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags.” 2. “Uh, since the United States Government declares this man to be Santa Claus, this court will not dispute it. Case dismissed.” 3. “If TV has taught me anything, it’s that miracles always happen to poor kids at Christmas. It happened to Tiny Tim, it happened to Charlie Brown, it happened to The Smurfs, and it’s gonna happen to us!” 4. “I want an official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200 shot range model air rifle.” 5. “Bless this highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner and the people who sold it on sale. Amen.” 6. “Iris, in the movies, we have leading ladies and we have the best friend. You, I can tell, are a leading lady, but for some reason, you’re behaving like the best friend.” 7. “Who gave you permission to tell Charlie there was no Santa Claus? I think if we’re going to destroy our son’s delusions, I should be a part of it.” 8. “I want to wash my hands, my face, my hair with snow.” 9. “We’re not just doing this for us. We’re doing it for the kids. For every kid who ever sat on Santa’s lap. For every little girl who left cookies and milk for Santa on

Christmas night. For every little boy who opens a package Christmas morning and finds clothes instead of toys. It breaks my heart.” 10. “We all know that Christmas is a big commercial racket. It’s run by a big Eastern syndicate you know.” 11. “I fear you more than any spectre I have seen. But as I know your purpose is to do me good, and as I hope to live to be another man from what I was, I am prepared to bear your company, and do it with a thankful heart. Will you not speak to me?” 12. “Seeing is believing, but sometimes the most real things in the world are the things we can’t see.” 13. “Light the lamp, not the rat, light the lamp, not the rat! Put me out, put me out, put me out!” 14. “Tell me something, Billy. How come a cute little guy like this can turn into a thousand ugly monsters?” 15. “Wanna see some magic? OK, let’s watch you disappear!” 16. “That’s not ‘my’ Christmas! ‘My’ Christmas is filled with laughter, and joy... and this: my Sandy Claws outfit. I want you to make it.” 17. “That’s neither pig nor pork, it’s beef.” 18. “I passed through the seven levels of the Candy Cane forest, through the sea of swirly twirly gum drops, and then I walked through the Lincoln Tunnel.”

1. “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”; 2. “Miracle on 34th Street”; 3. “The Simpson’s Christmas”; 4. “A Christmas Story”; 5. “Home Alone”; 6. “The Holiday”; 7. “The Santa Clause”; 8. “White Christmas”; 9. “Jingle All the Way”; 10. “A Charlie Brown Christmas”; 11. “A Christmas Carol”; 12. “The Polar Express”; 13. “The Muppets Christmas Carol”; 14. “Gremlins”; 15. “Bad Santa”; 16. “The Nightmare Before Christmas”; 17. “Babes in Toyland”; 18. “Elf”.

Holiday Happenings

$ave when shopping

this holiday season

(MCC) The holiday season is filled with tradition. Many families have their own unique customs, and those traditions create lasting memories for adults and children alike. One such holiday tradition is shopping for gifts for family and friends. Many people enjoy holiday shopping, anxiously anticipating the look on their loved ones’ faces when they open their presents. But holiday shopping is even more enjoyable for shoppers who can save a little extra money. The following are a few tips for shoppers who still want to give the perfect gifts but don’t want to break the bank. Stop paying for shipping Many people now do their holiday shopping online. Online shopping can be more convenient and give consumers more options. But some shoppers still shy away from online retailers for fear of high shipping costs. However, some retailers offer free shipping to consumers who spend a certain amount of money. In addition, savvy shoppers can scour the Internet for free shipping codes they can use at checkout. Some retailers even offer free shipping during the holiday season (last minute purchases might not be eligible) to entice customers. Empty your wallet of gift cards Gift cards are popular gifts come the holidays, but many gift card recipients fail to use their cards prior to their expiration dates. Many cards expire 12 months after their initial purchase date. If your wallet is filled with gift cards you received last holiday season, use them to buy gifts for friends and family now before they expire. Make a list Santa Claus is renowned for making a list come the holiday season, and holiday shoppers should follow his lead. Prior to your first holiday shopping trip, make a list that includes the names of friends and family to buy for and what

you want to buy for each one of them. Doing so decreases the chances you’ll forget someone and be forced to drive back to the mall. Reducing the number of shopping trips you have to make will conserve fuel and save you a substantial amount of money and time. Pay in cash If you’re not a fan of online shopping, then use only cash when shopping at brick-and-mortar stores. Paying with cash eliminates the risk of overspending with credit cards, which will come back to haunt you in January when the bills are due. Take a predetermined amount of cash with you when shopping, and once that money is gone, then it’s time to go home. Don’t be tempted by retailer credit cards Retailer credit cards can be very tempting, especially when the cashier offers an immediate 20 percent discount if you sign up for the card at the register. But that discount comes at a steep price down the road. Not only will you be receiving a bill after the holiday season, but that retailer credit card will most definitely feature a high interest rate that can negate the initial discount at the register – unless you pay off the balance in full. Create spending parameters with your immediate family The economy has yet to fully recover from the downturn that began nearly half a decade ago. As a result, many people still approach the holiday shopping season with a degree of trepidation. Get together with your immediate family and establish spending parameters so no person feels like he or she has to spend too much money on holiday shopping. Agree that no gift should cost more than $25. Everyone will still enjoy the holiday season and one another’s company, and they won’t be forced to deal with the stress of overspending.

Easy ways to be ‘green’ for the holiday (MCC) While the holiday season is a time of joy, giving and religious reflection, it also can be a time of excess. Holiday parties, meals brimming with more food than the average person can consume, wrapping paper tossed aside after minimal usage, and shoppers venturing for miles in cars in search of presents can all prove wasteful. For the environmentally conscious, the holiday season is a great opportunity to put your ideals to use. Although it may seem like a challenging task, going green for the holidays is easier than you might think.

• Get a live Christmas tree

Christmas trees are planted expressly for the purpose of being cut down and turned into holiday decor. Responsible tree farms will plant many more trees than is needed for the purpose of Christmas trees. Be a good steward for the environment and recycle your tree once the holidays are over. Some recycling centers will pick them up for free

or a small fee.

• Consider giving food as a gift Food is consumable, doesn’t take up space, and locally grown food does not require shipping or wasteful packaging. It’s an ideal gift for those who already have everything. • Cut back on holiday decor Most people love showcasing their Christmas

spirit with decorations. However, many decorative products are produced overseas and shipped over to North America on large vessels that require a lot of fuel. Think about reducing your decorations or replacing plastic and metal decorations for all-natural options. Branches of holly or twigs tied with ribbon to form a natural wreath are just as decorative as store-bought plastic decorations.

• Don’t leave lights on for extended periods of time Homes and busi-

nesses bedecked in holiday lights are staples of the season. However, extra lights, inflatable lawn Santas and other accessories consume substantial amounts of energy. Instead of leaving lights and other decorative items running for hours each night, turn them off after a little while to save energy.

• Donate money in lieu of gifts Choose environmentally responsible charities and donate funds to their efforts in the name of people who do not need another package of pajamas.

• Use decomposable shipping peanuts Shipping peanuts are environmentally friendly packing products that are made from cornstarch. When they come in contact with water, they dissolve – making for easy clean-up and less trash. • Donate unused gifts Nearly everyone gets an unwanted gift come the holiday season. Instead of putting items in the trash or taking them back to the store, donate gifts you’ll never use to a charity or a thrift shop.

• Wrap gifts with wrapping paper alternatives Wrapping paper is a luxury item and one that tends to be wasteful. There are many items around the house that can be recycled into decorative gift wrap. Sew scraps of fabric together for a patchwork bag or use glossy photos from a fashion magazine to papier mache a box. When you think creatively, you’re bound to come up with some very usable and eco-friendly ideas. Although many people tend to go overboard for the holidays, getting into the holiday spirit does not have to be unfriendly to the environment.

Stress-free holiday entertaining – A DOZEN WAYS TO KEEP

(MS) Whether you’re a seasoned cook and veteran at throwing parties, or new to the art of entertaining, hosting family and friends can provoke a condition that has been coined, “kitchen performance anxiety.” With the holidays upon us, Meyer Corporation, U.S., the largest cookware company in America with long standing brands, such as Farberware and Anolon, enlisted the advice of Los Angelesbased party expert Diane Rossen Worthington for tips on how to alleviate stress and gain confidence hosting parties this time of year, and all four seasons. Diane is a professionally trained chef, writer, editor, food consultant, and James Beard Award-winning radio show host who has authored more than 20 cookbooks, including her latest, “Seriously Simple Parties – Recipes, Menus & Advice for Effortless Entertaining” (Chronicle Books). Culling from her newest book, and vast experience hosting parties large and small, Diane shares a dozen practical ways to keep calm so you can fully enjoy being with your guests. 1. Start planning your menu as far in advance as possible of your gathering – whether it’s an intimate Sunday brunch, a big cocktail party, a Sunday afternoon open house of cookies and coffee, or a traditional sit-down dinner. Tweak your menu as you get closer to the day to make sure you’re comfortable with what you’ve set out to make. You may need to edit here and there based on how busy your schedule gets during the days leading up to the date. 2. When selecting recipes, think like a chef and choose dishes with ingredients that focus on what’s in season and available at peak freshness. This approach to devising your menu will ensure the best tasting results, even if you’re a novice cook. Fortunately, the holidays is all about celebrating what’s in season – such as pumpkin and acorn squash, delicious root vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots, and crisp apples, juicy pears, pecans, walnuts, cranberries, and more. 3. Seriously turn down the dial on stress by choosing appetizers, sides, main dishes and desserts that you can make either completely or partly one or several days in advance. This is a huge time saver that relieves a good deal of the pressure to perform on the day of your party. Selecting appetizers that you can make in advance is especially smart, as this gives you the freedom to enjoy the company of guests when they first arrive. 4. Before you start cooking and baking, take inventory of kitchen equipment to be sure you have everything that’s called for in your recipes. Are your pots and pans, cookie sheets, electric mixer, food processor, kitchen knives and other culinary tools in good working order? If you need to replace or add items,

CALM AND CARRY ON

now’s the time to shop. 5. A well-stocked pantry is every clever cook’s secret weapon. Infuse your recipes with gourmet flavors by having on hand a variety of well-made red wine and balsamic vinegars, assorted oils, good quality chicken and vegetable stock, seasoning salts, capers, spices and nuts. You might want to invest in a package of Seriously Simple Seasoning Salt (available at dianeworthington.com) for spicing up all of your savory dishes. 6. To save time on preparing drinks when guests arrive, consider making pitchers of a signature cocktail in advance, along with a non-alcoholic version. You can set up a tray in the foyer, kitchen or elsewhere that’s convenient for guests to help themselves. For an easy-to-make crowd pleaser that’s perfect for the holidays, try mulling fresh apple cider with allspice,

cinnamon sticks, lemon slices, and a splash of bourbon or rum.

7.

Make lists of everything that needs to be done, from shopping for ingredients to planning when the cooking or baking gets done to deciding on the look of your table setting and choosing your lighting and background music. You’ll make entertaining seriously simple when you refer to your “road map” of lists – a strategy that truly takes the stress out of pulling it all together. 8. Give yourself permission to round out your menu with store-bought foods. There’s no shame in focusing on what you make best and leaving some items to other experts, like the fabulous bakery down the road with the most divine apple crumb pie and

shortbread cookies. You can also make smart shortcuts, like purchasing ready-made piecrust to save time baking your family’s heirloom recipe for sour cream pecan pie. 9. When you have a large gathering for a holiday cocktail or dinner party, select dishes that taste great served cold or at room temperature. This takes the pressure off making sure your timing for serving foods piping hot – not to mention stovetop or oven capacity – is perfect. Many appetizers, such as dips, pates, crostini and, of course, cheese platters, as well as many seasonal sides, like wild rice salads and roasted vegetables, are at their most flavorful when served at room temperature. 10. Embrace offers from family members and guests to help out, since let’s face it, everyone winds up in the kitchen anyway. Think ahead about the kinds of tasks that can easily be delegated so that guests can feel useful without working too hard - such as tossing salad and serving into salad bowls, pouring water into glasses at the table, ladling food into serving platters, slicing bread, setting the table, and clearing the table. Being open to guests lending a hand puts everyone at ease. 11. Adapt the kitchen habit of professional chefs who are taught to “clean as you go.” It’s hard to achieve Zen-like calm in the midst of chaos in the kitchen. While you’re preparing dishes, be mindful of wiping down counters and washing utensils and bowls as quickly as possible. If you have a dishwasher, make sure it’s been emptied and ready to be loaded up as the party progresses. 12. Make enough food for leftovers to enjoy the next day as you relive your party, and take the day off from cooking. Echoing Diane’s wise tips on how to enjoy your own party, be sure to peruse your cupboards and upgrade your cookware as needed to get the best cooking results with the least amount of time and effort.
