KIWANIS CLUB OF LA JOLLA

Message from the president BY WIL JOHNSON This year, our Kiwanis Club of La Jolla is celebrating its 85th year. We are a group of about 80 La Jollans coming together once a week on Fridays for lunch at the La Jolla Presbyterian Church to form lasting friendships, render altruistic service, hear great guest speakers and programs, and contribute to charitable organizations that need our help. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Kiwanis volunteers worldwide dedicate more than 6 million hours

and $100 million annually in projects that serve children and strengthen communities. The Kiwanis International Organization comprises nearly 600,000 adults and youth members who serve children and communities in 90 countries and geographic areas. In a typical year, Kiwanis clubs worldwide organize more than 150,000 service projects. Our club sponsored the La Jolla Half Marathon on April 25, 2010, with over 8,000 runners in the Half and 1,500 in the 5K run. In May 2010, we sponsored the Junior Olympics at the

La Jolla High School track. All nine of our local elementary schools, both public and private, participated, with over 800 little kids running, jumping and throwing softballs for medals and ribbons. In June 2010, we sponsored the Hope of America in which outstanding fourth- and fifth-grade students from the three La Jolla public elementary schools were selected by their teachers, and honored at our luncheon for the students, their parents and principals. Also in June, we honored the outstanding Marine noncommissioned officers

Wil Johnson, president of Kiwanis Club of La Jolla stationed at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. On July 31, 2010, we will have our annual Pancake Breakfast, a party for the local community at the La Jolla Recreation Center. Then in September, we are one of the sponsors of the La Jolla

Rough Water Swim. Swimmers — over 2,400 of them — come from all over the world to participate in this event. Finally, we are a sponsor of the summer series Concerts by the Sea at the Cove. As you can see, we are a

very active bunch. If you have a desire to serve your community, and can spend about 1 1/2 hours each week having a good lunch with friends and enjoying a good program, join us. We will welcome you with open arms.

Why I am a Kiwanian

International Committee

BY TRENTON BONNER Past president, Kiwanis Club of La Jolla

BY WALLY MATRANGA Although our Kiwanis Club is local, we reach out to the world through our International Committee. In fiscal year 2009-10, we have supported such worthwhile projects as: • Holy Innocent’s Children’s Hospital to assist in the building of a Children’s Hospital in Uganda, Africa, the first in the region! • La Casa de Pobres in Tijuana, Mexico, to buy 1,500 bags of food and blankets for children who are extremely impoverished and living in the dumps and hills of Tijuana. • In concert with the Tijuana Rotary, we have supported an orphanage in Tijuana that houses orphaned youths 10 years and younger. • Central Asia Institute in Afghanistan to support its wonderful efforts to build schools and educate girls. • Sisters of Mercy in Rosarito, Mexico, to support its effort in extending Christmas gifts to 2,500 poor and sometimes homeless children in the surrounding hills. • Military Outreach of the La Jolla Community Church, which supports families who have loved ones serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. • El Refugio in Tijuana, a senior citizen facility that houses the poorest of the poor. Compassion has no boundaries. That’s why we are so very proud to be Kiwanians.

Many years ago, I came to San Diego as a young Navy pilot and then later back to La Jolla to enter the real estate industry and become active in the c o m m u n i t y, especially the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla. As a young person growing up a small community in west Texas, I was instructed in strong Christian values (by my mother) and to help others less fortunate in the community (by my stepfather, who was a great community leader). Although, I have always been active in the community of La Jolla, I have only been a Kiwanian for five years. I looked at all of the La Jolla service clubs, and while they are all wonderful and do a lot for La Jolla, the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla allowed me the greatest opportunity to give the most back to our community. The mission

statement of Kiwanis says it all: “Kiwanis is a global organization of members of every age who are dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.” With that statement, Kiwanis was for me, especially if my work and the money that we could raise would stay for the most part in La Jolla. Through the Kiwanis La Jolla Half Marathon, the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, the Kiwanis Junior Olympics, the Rough Water Swim, Concerts by the Sea and Meals on Wheels, Kiwanians are very active in our community. Our volunteer work and fundraising in these events allows La Jolla Kiwanians to raise over $200,000 annually and give it back to the community with a large majority staying in La Jolla by providing scholarships, children’s programs, recreational improvements and many other community programs. These are the reasons that I am both a La Jollan and a Kiwanian.

La Jolla Kiwanis Junior Olympics Celebrating our 20th year in 2011 BY CARL and JEANINE VOLINSKI Richard “Moon” Mullen got the idea for a Junior Olympics from observing a similar, family-oriented athletic celebration while on leave with the Navy more than 30 years ago in Japan. With the support of his fellow Kiwanis members, the first Junior Olympics became a reality in 1992, the year that Moon served as the La Jolla Kiwanis Club’s president. The objective would be “if you try, you are a winner.” The Kiwanis members welcomed 140 students from the La Jolla Elementary, Bird Rock Elementary and Torrey Pines Elementary schools to participate in 1992. Each student selected three events in which to compete, including the softball throw, the obstacle course, standing and running broad jumps, and vari-

ous track events staged by age group. Traditions begun in 1992 continue today. Ribbons are awarded to each participant for every event they enter. Just like their adult Olympic counterparts, the top three finishers in each competition are presented with gold, silver and bronze medals from atop an awards stand. Key events are the fastest girl and boy competitions with one participant from each school, and the fastest girls and fastest boys relay team races with a team of four members from each school. Trophies are presented to the winners’ school for each event. A SPIRIT award trophy is presented to the school with the largest percentage of its student body participating. The event has been held annual-

ly at the La Jolla High School Edwards Stadium. It is run like a high school track and field event, and each participant recites the Olympic oath. The event is free, and elementary students ages 5 to 12 are invited to participate. During its 19 years, the Junior Olympics has grown from the original three schools to nine private and public schools from the La Jolla community including La Jolla Elementary, Bird Rock Elementary, Torrey Pines Elementary, The Gillispie School, All Hallows Academy, The Children’s School, San Diego French American School, Stella Maris Academy and The Evans School. Participation has grown from the original 140 to the 885 participants who participated in our May 16, 2010, event.

Youngsters compete at the Kiwanis Club’s Junior Olympics.

Congratulations to The Kiwanis Club of La Jolla for 85 years of service to our community!

Young Children Priority One BY LEON CHOW Young Children Priority One is the ongoing service program of Kiwanis International, addressing the needs of children prenatal through age 5. The Kiwanis Club of La Jolla is pleased to have supported these local groups by providing more than $50,000 in an effort to give children a strong head start. Words Alive Early Literacy Intervention program is a read-aloud program conducted at six state-funded preschools and child development centers that serve prekindergarten-age children from mostly low-income households. • Outside the Lens (OTL) is a San Diego-based youth media literacy program dedicated to celebrating the vision and

voices of children around the world and across cultures. They endeavor to engage, educate and empower youths on issues affecting the world today through photography and multimedia projects. • Child Abuse Prevention Fund is a special fundraising initiative of Children’s Hospital and Health System. The Child Abuse Prevention Fund is committed to ensuring a safe environment for children through financial support of primary prevention activities. • Father Joe’s Villages is a mission-style campus in the heart of San Diego, houses 900 families, single men and single women every night and serves more than 3,000 meals each day.

‘Hope of America’ challenges children to excel BY DON HODGES Each year, Kiwanis Clubs around the country reward high-achieving fifth-graders who are preparing to leave elementary school and move on to middle school. The program is called “Hope of America.” The recipients are chosen by their peers and teachers as representing the best in scholarship, citizenship and leadership. A special luncheon is held in their honor. Each student brings parents, brothers and sisters, grandparents and others to join in the celebration. At Kiwanis Club of La Jolla, we present awards to outstanding young citizens from each fifth-grade class of the three local elementary schools: Bird Rock, La Jolla and Torrey Pines. Each of the selected honorees receives an engraved plaque and a U.S. savings bond maturing to $100 in value. The principal of each school reads an essay from the teacher of the student describing why the award was given. The 2010 Hope of America award luncheon was held on June 4. Awards were given to the following students:

La Jolla Kiwanian Don Hodges celebrates with student honoree Abigail Cho of Torrey Pines Elementary School and her principal, James Solo, at a June club meeting where the Kiwanis honored 10 outstanding fourthand fifth-graders in the Hope for America program. DAVE SCHWAB La Jolla Elementary: Gabriella Anastasi, Christina Gaffney, Aaron Oliver and Shane Pauker. Torrey Pines Elementary: Abigail Cho, Sarah Elizabeth Espinoza and Isabella Venancia Gardner. Bird Rock Elementary: Lili Davis, Dane Gregory Hansen and Lindsey Gartner.

These wonderful students are great role models for their peers. Congratulations to all of the honorees and their parents and relatives. The achievements of these children are evidence of their inherent qualities, and the excellent support and guidance they have received from their parents.

La Jolla Half Marathon ‘One of the top half marathons in the country’ BY TRENTON BONNER

Runners gather for the start of the La Jolla Half Marathon.

Proud to be a Kiwanian! No other organization does as much for our La Jolla community as does the La Jolla Kiwanis Club. Our Half Marathon and 5K Run attracted over 8000 runners from throughout the country. Our Jr. Olympics was a fun day for over 800 5-12 year-olds from all 9 La Jolla elementary schools. Our Pancake Breakfast, scheduled for July 31st, at the La Jolla Rec Center, is the biggest community party of the year. We also jointly sponsor the Roughwater Swim, Concerts by the Sea, and Meals-on-Wheels.

April 2010 marked the 29th year of the La Jolla Half Marathon, praised by Runner’s World magazine as “One of the Top Half Marathons in the Country” and “One of the 100 Great Races” based on organization, reputation, community involvement, spirit, uniqueness and competition. Kiwanis! What a Great Group of Community Leaders! Several years ago, before joining the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla, I surveyed the Club for Community Leaders, folks that give back to our Community and the children of our Community. Leaders such as: John Anderson, retired Chief of Police, UCSD · Doug Bradley, Investment Advisor · Robin Cahill, Attorney · Sam Greening, Pastor · Anita Hansen, CFO Tom Henry, Attorney · Don Hodges, Architect · Wil Johnson, Real Estate Sherri Lightner, San Diego City Council Member · Wally Matranga, retired Banker · Moon Mullen, Vietnam POW and retired Navy Captain · Glen Rasmussen, Attorney · Don Schutte, WWII POW & retired Dentist · Jerry Shaffer, CPA · Dan Stinemates, retired Navy Captain and Executive Officer USS Midway · Cal Swanson, retired Navy Captain · Jack Talbot, Insurance Bill Uncapher, Director La Jolla Half Marathon · Carl & Jeanine Volinski, Insurance · Suzanne Weiner, Director Gillispie School and Spence Wilson, 98 years young, retired Operator La Jolla Cove Theater.

For 85 years, where there’s a need, La Jolla Kiwanians are there, making a difference for children and our community.

Finally Oscar Knight, although not a member of our La Jolla Kiwanis Club, is a great community leader and dedicated to improving the lives of all our children. This past June, Oscar with major support of our La Jolla Club was elected as a Kiwanis International Trustee.

We are a global organization, rooted in La Jolla, working to make La Jolla and San Diego even better places to live.

There are many more leaders within our Club that I have not listed, but they will be the future of our Community.

Congratulations and a heartfelt thank you to all my Kiwanis buddies.

popular that the event sells out several months before. Starting at the Del Mar Fairgrounds/racetrack, the La Jolla Half Marathon attracts more than 9,000 runners and more than 10,000 spectators, friends and families, and 500-600 Kiwanis volunteers. The race provides all who participate with spectacular views along the Pacific coastline as the race winds through the town of Del Mar to the coast, then south by the Torrey Pines Golf Course and the campus of UCSD to La Jolla Shores Beach before finishing at Scripps Park at the Cove. The La Jolla Shores 5K starts simultaneously with the Half Marathon and also proceeds along the final 5,000 meters — roughly the final 3.1 miles — of the Half Marathon course. The two events have earned a reputation that attracts runners from throughout the United States (more than 40 states) and outside of the country. The race was initially started by the La Jolla Town Council and then taken over by the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla the last 28 years. It is a unique event in that it is organized and run by a group of dedicated Kiwanis volunteers under the leadership of directors Bill Uncapher and Barbara Baisch of the La Jolla

Sports Group. Through the years, the event has added sponsors, vendors, music, an expo held in conjunction with registration, packet pickup, a concession stand that caters to the needs of runners with high-protein food and drink products, a CARB Load Dinner (for the runners) and online registration. Each year, the Kiwanis Club strives to improve this classic event by upgrading the water station equipment, adding more safety features and having professional announcers, directors and chairmen. The community of La Jolla and especially the Village area greatly benefit from the Half Marathon as the runners and spectators enjoy the hotels, restaurants and shopping that the Village has to offer. La Jolla Kiwanians work Saturday and Sunday and gratefully enlist as volunteers the Kiwanis Circle K club (UCSD), the Kiwanis Key Club (La Jolla High School and University City High School), the Builders Club (Muirlands Middle School), the La Jolla Boy Scouts, the La Jolla High football team, the La Jolla High School basketball team, other groups from La Jolla High School, Bishop’s High School, the Marines of Camp Pendleton and many others in the La Jolla community.

Kiwanis-sponsored youth programs BY MARY TALBOT FEE Thousands of elementary, middle and high school, and college students experience what it is like to be of service to their communities by the support of their parent Kiwanis clubs worldwide. In 85 years, hundreds of local students have enriched La Jolla and its surrounding areas profoundly through their Kiwanis-sponsored programs. Providing opportunities for La Jolla’s youth to be of service is an integral part of what the club accomplishes, and it creates a fun venue for members to make new friends while they give back to their community. The Kiwanis Club of La Jolla sponsors school programs at each academic level to provide the experience of commitment to community service. They are the following:

K-Kids: At the elementary school level, students care very much about their communities. In past years, La Jolla Elementary and The Gillispie School have formed K-Kids clubs sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla. They have participated in beach cleanups, made cookies, and sponsored food and toy drives during the holidays. Builders Club: At the middle school level, The Builders Club provides community awareness to its students with participation in volunteer service opportunities. This year, the Muirlands Middle School Builders Club will be revitalized with new ways for students to be of help in this community. Key Club: The La Jolla Kiwanis Club sponsors two high school Key Clubs: La Jolla High School Key Club

and University City High School Key Club. These high-energy clubs provide many volunteers for La Jolla Kiwanis events such as the LJ Half Marathon, the Pancake Breakfast and the Junior Olympics, in addition to service projects designed by their separate clubs. Circle K club: At the university level, UCSD is one of the largest, most successful Circle K clubs in the nation. With a high percentage of successful leaders, the college students are integral to the success of the La Jolla Kiwanis Club’s events as well as the extended CaliforniaNevada-Hawaii District. They manage their own nonprofit organization, create and implement their own budget, and with their Kiwanis adviser, decide which charitable organizations to support.

KIWANIS CLUB OF LA JOLLA celebrates 85th year Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child and one community at a time. Community service BY TONI TISCHON La Jolla Kiwanis supports many projects that benefit the community as a whole. For example, every Thursday, Kiwanis volunteers deliver Meals on Wheels on two La Jolla routes. We also support the organization by providing funding. We contribute to La Jolla Concerts by the Sea to assure that the concerts remain free, and help with the Halloween party at the La Jolla Parks and Recreation by providing funds for the prizes. We also contribute to the Rough Water Swim. Among the organizations we support are The Riford Center, and the Mount Soledad Association for its Memorial and Veteran’s Day services. In 2010, we contributed to the Muirlands turf project for the new field at Muirlands Middle School. And every December, we help with the La Jolla Christmas parade and the Christmas lights. Our service goes beyond La Jolla and includes the military. We are proud to support the Semper Fi Fund, which helps wounded soldiers and their families, and GuideOn, which gives the families of fallen service members outdoor experiences and leadership training. At the regional level, our donations we have helped Project Wildlife provide care for injured animals and for SNAP to spay and neuter animals of families who cannot afford to do so. And finally, we have contributed to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Association, Braille Institute and the ALS Association.

Children enjoy the 2009 Christmas Parade.

The Youth Services Committee administers funds provided by the Kiwanis Club of La Jolla Foundation, which are designated for charitable organizations that assist and promote the education, health and welfare of school-aged children. With a budget of close to $60,000 in 2009-10, we provide funding for some of our annual events: Junior Olympics, Hope of America and La Jolla Rough Water Swim. We also provide funding to assist more than 25 local child-related charitable organizations ranging from:

and develop in a secure environment. We know we make a big difference for the youths in La Jolla and the greater San Diego community.
