Este año, quiere cambiar el enfoque a incrementar la participación voluntaria en las comunidades, combatir egoísmo y animar a las familias hacer que los artes estén más accesibles para sus niños. Lydia enfatiza la importancia de estar involucrado con la comunidad y pide que la gente mire el ejemplo de servicio voluntario en los Estados Unidos. “Los latinos típicamente hacen voluntariado una vez cada cuatro años para las elecciones cuando salen a piquetear contra algún candidato político.” Para ganar respeto, dice, la comunidad hispana debe de actuar desde un lugar de altruismo y compasión que demuestra que están invertidos en el futuro de este país. “Los hispanos están recibiendo información muy importante a través de este programa. The pair has high hopes for this year in regards to the goals they want to achieve in 2014. “We have to look past what has happened in previous years,” Lydia says, referring to issues such as employment, domestic violence, police relations and crime rates which have been some of her past priorities as a Hispanic community liaison. This year, she wants to shift the focus to increasing voluntary community participation, combating egoism and encouraging families to make the arts more available to their children. Lydia stresses the importance of community involvement and asks that people look towards the example of volunteer service in the United States. “Latinos typically volunteer once every four years for the elections when they go out to picket against a political candidate.” In order to gain respect, she says, the Hispanic community must act from a place of selflessness and compassion that demonstrates that they are invested in the future of this country. “Hispanics are receiving very important information through this program.
