DAS PALMA DER FILME Von Pedro Barbadillo Die eleganten Renaissance-Paläste im Zentrum von Palma oder die Straßen im jüdischen Viertel El Call, die dramatischen Klippen an der Nordküste, die Mandelbäume im Inselinneren, die Tramuntana-Berge...Mallorca ist seit jeher eine privilegierte Filmkulisse. Und auch der Aufenthaltsort vieler Schauspieler und Regisseure, die Filmgeschichte geschrieben haben. Michael Douglas, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Ava Gardner, Johnny Weissmüller, Peter Ustinov… die Liste könnnte bis ins Unendliche fortgeführt werden. Alle haben aus verschiedenen Motiven eine Zeit auf der Insel verbracht und sind auf immer und ewig mit ihr verbunden. Erst Ende 2011 drehten die Brüder Wachowski, Autoren der Matrix-Trilogie, ihren neuen Film “Der Wolkenatlas” mit Tom Hanks und Halle Berry auf Mallorca. Der Schauspieler Harvey Keitel bereitet gerade zusammen mit seiner Ehefrau Daphna Kastner als Regisseurin und Drehbuchautorin seinen nächsten Spielfilm “Holidays in Mallorca” vor.
PALMA IN THE SPOTLIGHT By Pedro Barbadillo The elegant Renaissance palaces in the centre of Palma and the streets of the El Call Jewish quarter, the dramatic cliffs on the North Coast of the island, the almond groves inland, the peaks of the Sierra de Tramuntana… Mallorca has always provided an exceptional location for filming movies. It’s also the holiday destination of choice for many actors and directors who’ve made history. Michael Douglas, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Ava Gardner, Johnny Weissmüller, Peter Ustinov… the list goes on and on. All of them spent some time on the island, for business or pleasure, and all of them found themselves hooked. The latest in the long line are the Wachowskis, creators of the “Matrix” trilogy, who in late 2011 shot their new film “Cloud Atlas”, with Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. And New Yorker Harvey Keitel, who’s preparing for his new role in “Holiday in Mallorca”, scripted and directed by his wife Daphna Kastner.

In “Blackjack” (1949), the first Spanish-American coproduction and one of Lola Flores’s earliest films, George Sanders plays Captain Mike, a smuggler aboard the ship Blackjack. One day he rescues a group of political asylum-seekers who have survived a shipwreck, and whose numbers include the young Ingrid. He takes them to Palma, and the story of a love destined to failure is played out on the streets and under the windmills of Es Jonquet, the old fishermen’s barrio.
In “Der schwarze Jack” (1949), der ersten spanisch-nordamerikanischen Koproduktion, spielt George Sanders Kapitän Mike, einen Schmuggler am Steuer des Bootes “Schwarzer Jack”. In einer Szene rettet er eine Gruppe politischer Flüchtlinge, Überlebende eines Schiffbruchs und bringt diese nach Palma, unter ihnen ist die junge Ingrid. In den Straßen und unter den Mühlen von Es Jonquet, dem ehemaligen Matrosen-Viertel, bahnt sich die Geschichte einer unmöglichen Liebe an, in der eine blutjunge Lola Flores zu sehen ist.

Errol Flynn liebte das Meer und verließ 1952 sein Haus in Hollywood, um an Bord seiner Jacht Zaca den Ozean zu überqueren. Ein Unwetter brachte ihn an die Steilküsten im Norden der Insel und er wurde von dieser Küste dermaßen verzaubert, dass er beschloss, den Hafen von Palma zu seinem Ausgangspunkt zu machen. Der Schauspieler, der Robin Hood unsterblich machte, lebte mit seiner Frau und seinen zwei Kindern an Bord seiner Jacht und man konnte ihn häufig barfuss durch die Bars von Moll Vell oder dem Paseo del Born streifen sehen.
Errol Flynn loved the sea, and left his home in Hollywood in 1952 to sail across the ocean on his yacht Zaca. A storm swept him toward the cliffs to the north of Mallorca, and this coastline so fascinated him that he set up his base in the port at Palma. The actor who immortalized Robin Hood lived on board with his wife and two children, and could often be seen walking barefoot around the bars in Moll Vell and Paseo del Born.

Orson Welles’ hatte ein Faible für Stierkämpfe und er folgte seinen bevorzugten Toreros von Arena zu Arena. Im Coliseo Balear, der Stierkampfarena von Palma, verfolgte er bei verschiedenen Gelegenheiten die Stierkämpfe seiner Freunde. Eine Fotografie aus dem Jahre 1973 zeigt ihn Zigarre rauchend auf einem Logenplatz zusammen mit seinem Freund, dem Torero Andrés Vázquez. Dem Autor von “Citizen Kane” wurde im Palmesaner Stadtteil Es Rafal ein Platz mit seinem Namen gewidmet.
Orson Welles’s fondness for bullfighting led him from bullring to bullring following his favourite matadores. At Palma’s bullring, the Coliseo Balear, he attended friends’ bullfights on several occasions. A photograph from 1973 shows him in up in the gallery, smoking a cigar alongside his friend the matador Andrés Vázquez. The creator of “Citizen Kane” has a square named after him in the Es Rafal neighbourhood.
