The ribbon was cut last Saturday on the newly renovated Veteran's Hall in La Habra. The building, which is home to many organization meetings, including American Legion Post 267, is the original civic center of the city of La Habra. According to many city staff, it has been in need of updating. "Our Veteran's Hall was really look-
ing tired and was poorly maintained over the years," said La Habra Mayor Jim Gomez. "The council decided to spend the money to restore the building to its original condition...It is now a place our community can be proud of." The cost of the four-month renovation was approximately $235,000. According to Assistant City Manager Rob Ferrier, a portion of that money came from the developer City Ventures,and part of the overall larger Civic Center

In an effort to address a rise in the number of homeless individuals, La Habra has contracted with City Net to help get them off the streets and provide the resources they need. The contract, approved by the city council last month, call for City Net to help provide long-term recover options for the transient population, including temporary places to live, mental health and job resources. The Long Beach-based City Net already contracts with Anaheim, Buena Park and Santa Ana to help provide resources and solutions. The city has a homeless task force comprised of representatives from various city departments as well as the La Habra Police Department, according to Rob Ferrier, assistant to the city manager. However, while Ferrier explained that they task force does its best, they aren’t social workers and City Net will help provide resources to help with long-term solutions. LHPD said that interactions with homeless individuals in the city have increased 10-15 percent from 2014-2015. In an effort to help address the homeless issue, Orange County Supervisors approved a year-round shelter last year that is being built in Anaheim. La Habra, along with other North Orange County cities paid approximately $150,000 for the 200-bed shelter that will include resources like a service center aimed at helping people find permanent housing and employment. City Net will help La Habra work with the shelter as a larger collaborative team that addresses the homelessness issue in La Habra. LHPD and the city estimate 40-50 long-term homeless individuals in the city. A number that is much lower than that of neighboring cities After a less than a month into the contract, Ferrier reported that City Net was already able to successfully get an individual off the streets, into temporary housing and working to stay off the streets. The $90,000 contract is for one year, but La Habra city staff will assess how things are going after three months.

Local business collecting fruit for Resource Center
Primarily Hair is collecting Fruit (canned or packaged) for the La Habra Community Resource Care Center. The CRCC provides assistance to over 7,000 adults and children each year. During the nineteenth century, California experienced the rule of the Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. governments. Under the Mexican government’s Secularization Act of 1833, California was broken up into large ranchos. Formally mission owned land, these ranchos were owned by private individuals who built homes and raised livestock such as cattle. In 1839, Rancho Cañada de La Habra, which included much of present day La Habra, was privately granted to Mariano Reyes Roldán. In 1841, Roldán sold Rancho Cañada de La Habra to Juan Bautista Leandry, who owned the neighboring Rancho Los Coyotes. Upon Leandry’s death, his ran-

chos were divided between his wife Francesca Uribe and his mother Ana Marie Tosta, who sold her property to Andrés Pico the brother of Governor Pío Pico California landowners had many successful years during the rancho era. However, many who owned ranchos under the Mexican government lost their claims to American immigrants once California became a US state in 1850. Even those who retained their land f aced hard times. By the mid1850s the “golden era” of cattle ranching soon came to an end as prices for cattle fell and debts from the Land Case trials of the early 1850s piled up. Andrés Pico, unable to pay his debts, mortgaged and sold Rancho Cañada de La Habra to Abel Stearns, who in the early 1960s became the largest landowner in Los Angeles County. FJUHSD will finally get local representation on Board Nearly 10 months ago, MALDEF, a Los Angeles based civil rights group sent the FJUHSD School Board a letter demanding that the board changes its at-large elections system to a district-based system. This basically means that the communities which make up the district will be divided into five areas and a board member will be elected from each area. It appears that the La Habra area will have to wait until the 2018 election year to elect a candidate. At the May 17 Public Hearing agenda item, the School Board decided on Map B5—a fair representation of five distinct communities and therefore voting areas. Now, the Buena Park area and Sunny Hills area of Fullerton could see a more competitive election this November against incumbent board members, Barbara Kilponen and Andy Montoya. Mr. Montoya is completing his first four-year term while Ms. Kilponen was first elected in 1988. I believe by-area districts are better for our schools, students, parents and other residents of our communities especially in light of the size of the district – approximately 250,000 residents covering about 65 square miles. . While the intent of the California Voters Rights Act and MALDEF’s letter was
to create more inclusive and diverse public boards, I believe it is simply good government to elect local board members who live in the community they represent. Our current make-up of school board members all live in the city of Fullerton. School board members make critical decisions and this year the FJUHSD Board will soon decide on how to invest $175 million dollars in capital improvements to our high schools. This leads me back to why we need change and local representation in our school board. School board members are responsible to make effective and sensible decisions that will improve the interests and long-term opportunities for its students - specifically preparing our children for higher education and the global employment opportunities of the 21st century. I urge all parents and concerned residents of the FJUHSD to go to the district website and review the proposed capital improvement plans for our schools. La Habra teen earns Eagle Badge By Naomi Osuna La Habra Journal
Jakob Parnham has been in the scouting program for 12 years and has completed over 750 service hours at church and in his community and is on his way to earning Scouting's highest rank—Eagle. The 18 year old started his journey in the first grade earning his Tiger badge in Cub Scouts. Since earning his Eagle Rank in Boy Scouts, he is now part of their Venture Scout Crew (scouting for older boys and girls). Parnham, a recent graduate of La Habra High School, is also involved with music and he plays several instruments, including bass, up-right bass, keyboard, drums and guitar.
He plays in St. Bruno's Life Teen Band every Sunday at the Life Teen Mass, which he has been a part of for the past three years. He was also a member of the La Habra High School jazz band all four years of high school. He was in the Highlander marching band for three years and also the concert band for three years. He has taken part in the Coastal Clean-up for the past 10 years helping clean up Coyote Creek in La Habra along with other volunteers. One of the requirements for the Eagle rank is that a scout must plan and complete a project for the community. Parnham built a patio deck with flower boxes, and rain gutter water pipes for The La Habra Hills
Presbyterian Church for the youth room, which is the charter organization for their Boy Scout Troop. Parnham plans on attending Fullerton College where he will earn an associate degree in music then transfer to Cal State Fullerton to earn his bachelor's degree in music. According to Bob Janicki, the Assistant Scout Master of Troop 1814, “Parnham thinks scouting is great, he has learned many things in scouting such as first aid, life saving, cooking, shooting, fishing, boating, swimming, and a lot more, plus making a lot of friendships”. Janicki added that Parnham knows if he puts his mind to it "there isn't much that he can't do.”
renovations in the past month as a result of the city’s collaboration with KaBOOM!, a nonprofit organization that seeks to build playgrounds within walking distance of each child in North America. “We’re excited to get back to that park for that movie [Minions] and see a lot of familiar faces that helped us with that process,” said Elmore. When the movies in the park program began last year, the first screening had approximately 50 attendees, according to Elmore. Now, each night the crowd reaches a few hundred people on average, but never feels over-crowded. The recreation department encourages families to arrive at 6pm to participate in various activities before the movie begins at sundown. “We have some game booths and a craft booth,” said Elmore. “We usually
play some music and we do some dancing – stuff like that.” All events that take place on movies in the park nights are family-friendly, as recreation staff wants everyone to have the ability to participate. Each of the movies is rated PG for the same reason – to promote the family environment. City staff works together to select movies for the season, choosing films that are popular and have good ratings while being fun for the whole family. This season offers a mix of animated and live-action films, one of which is the new “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” movie, which is expected to receive a large turnout. When attending a movie in the park, staff recommends bringing something to sit on – either a blanket or lawn chair – as well as a sweatshirt to keep warm, as the films sometimes

With summer just around the corner, the La Habra Recreation Department is starting its second annual Movies in the Park program. This year’s series began Friday, May 20, with a screening of “The Good Dinosaur” at Brio Park, where all movies were projected last year. The La Habra Recreation Department is switching things up this summer and holding the events at various parks throughout the city. “Brio is our home park,” said Katie Elmore, assistant recreation manager. “[In] June, July and August we do two movies in the park – one still at Brio, and the second travels. What we’re trying to do is catch those neighboring communities and homes.” One of the additional locations is Montwood Park, which has seen

run late into the evening. Snacks and beverages are sold at the park, but attendees are allowed to bring their own as well. The next movie in the park is “Hotel Transylvania 2”. Identity is an integral part of life. This past week I had the pleasure of being at the Magic Kingdom for a couple of days. It was a visit different from others because of the way people were identifying themselves. Actually it was one group in particular, high school graduates. There were so many groups wearing T-shirts, sweatshirts or hoodies I couldn’t begin to give you a total number. On the front of the shirts the school was identified and stated in some way were the words, “2016 graduate”. You could feel the pride coming from these individuals over the accomplishment they were celebrating. I couldn’t help but think how often the word “teenager” is used in a negative way. Yet, here were possibly thousands of teenagers celebrating an accomplishment that, on the most part, was twelve years in the making. What a positive identity. There is another group to celebrate these days. Like bookends around graduates is Mother’s Day in May and Father’s Day coming up in June. As we have recognized the part that mothers play in life, it’s now time to also acknowledge fathers. Even in the life situation when a father might be absent from the home, Father’s Day is that time to acknowledge the partner that started a person with a new identity. In an even more positive light we celebrate this month the image of a person with an identity of loving, caring and nurturing. If you stand a high school graduate next to a father you begin to understand how important a personal identity can be. City Communicator FREE Movies in the Park La Habra Active Day Camp Summer is almost here, and that means FUN, new friends, and exciting adventures! Sign up for La Habra Active Day Camp, a 10-week summer day camp (June 6thAugust 12th) that is designed to give kids ages four-12 years old an active and fun experience in a safe environment, while e x p l o r i n g , learning and enjoying new adventures! La Habra Active Day Camp offers breakfast, lunch and two snacks throughout the day. Weekly activities include art lessons, movie days, water days, academic enrichment, arts & crafts, fun fitness, guest speakers, cooking lessons, pool days, assemblies, walking excursions, Wednesday off site excursions, and more. Your child will be supervised by experienced, CPR/First Aid certified, responsible and nurturing staff. The ratio of staff to campers is eight to one. The cost to attend is $180 per week. Parents who live or work in La Habra will receive a $15 per child discount. There is also a $15 per child sibling discount (must register at the same time). A $20 registration fee is payable at registration, which includes a camp t-shirt to be worn on excursions; these will include Discovery Science Center, Irvine Regional Park, Billy Beez, Disneyland, Sky Zone, Knott’s Berry Farm, La Mirada Splash, the Long Beach Aquarium and two local beaches. Lifeguards Sought The City of La Habra Recreation Division is seeking lifeguards for its summer aquatics program. The 10-week program consists of swim lessons and recreational swim for the public. Lessons are for ages six months to 17 years, and recreational swim is open to all ages. Lifeguards teach swim lessons, evaluate participants’ skills and guard during lessons and recreational swim. Applicants must have completed Red Cross Lifeguard Training, CPR and First Aid. The Community Services Department’s 2016 Movies in the Park series continues on Friday evenings, with two screenings each month, June through August. Activities begin at 6:00 p.m., and the movies will screen at dusk (approximately 7:00-8:00 p.m.). Participants can bring their own food and beverages or purchase snacks at the snack bar. Seating is on the grass, so lawn chairs or blankets are a must. Summer Aquatics Activities Will Begin in June The City’s summer aquatics programs will return to La Habra High School’s pool, with swim lessons beginning the week of June 6th and ending on July 28th. Lessons will be offered in two-week sessions, Monday-Thursday, between 9:00 a.m. and 12: 40 p.m., for $65 per two-week session. Recreational Open Swim begins on Monday, June 6th and continues through Friday, August 12th. Hours are Monday-Thursday, 1:003:00 p.m., and Fridays, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The Friday night DIVE-IN MOVIES program, where participants can enjoy a family movie while relaxing in and around the pool, will return beginning on June 24th, with a showing of Norm of the North, followed by Happy Feet on July 29th and Finding Nemo on August 26th. Gates open at 6:00 pm, and the movies begin at dusk. The cost to attend is $5 per person. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
Family Overnight at the Children’s Museum Join the La Habra Recreation staff for an epic overnight takeover of the Children’s Museum at La Habra, Friday, July 15th, 6:30 p.m. through Saturday, July 16th at 9:30 a.m. Fun family activities will include games, crafts, story telling, a movie and more! Dinner, breakfast and snacks will be served. This activity is open to children ages four through 12 years, with an accompanying parent/adult (18+ years) guardian. The fee is $20 per person, and preregistration is necessary. Annual Chamber Night brings in money for student scholarships By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal
City leaders and community representatives were hustling serving food and drinks at the La Habra Chamber of Commerce's annual Chamber night at Senor Campos Restaurant last week. The chamber has been holding this fundraising event for the last 33 years. A portion of the money goes to scholarships that the Chamber presents to local high school students majoring in business and there is also a donation to the La Habra Meals on Wheels program, according to Mark Sturdevant, president of the La Habra Chamber of Commerce. "The balance goes to the chamber to support its activities in the Community and operations," he explained.

Teams of community leaders were established and responsible for different sections of the restaurant. The team members worked as food servers for their sections. While the restaurant retained the money for the food, the teams worked for tips that went to the Chamber's fundraiser. For the second consecutive year, the team headed up by LH Mayor Jim Gomez brought in the the most money, edging out the team lead by LHPD Chief Jerry Price. Team Gomez raised $8,022 for the Chamber's fundraiser. "Chamber night also benefits small businesses by bringing awareness to the restaurant and their great food," Sturdevant said. "Mostly people enjoy being served by community leaders and having dinner with friends." Money raised from last year's Chamber Night went to annual scholarships for local high school seniors who intend to focus on careers in business This year's scholarships were presented to: Norma Mendoza from La Habra High School, Shane Dean from Whittier Christian High School and Julie Dada from Sonora High School.

LH Rotary awards this year's top high school scholars By Jane Williams La Habra Journal
The week before high school graduation, La Habra Rotary got a preview of the multi-talented students making up the graduating classes, and the Class of 2016 had a wealth of such students. Three top students were recognized last month by the LH Rotary Club at its monthly meeting at the Hacienda Country Club in La Habra Heights. Tiffany Park was this year's valedictorian at Whittier Christian. Her biggest challenge was deciding which of the excellent colleges accepting her she should attend. She decided Pomona College fit her best and will attend the school as a pre-med major and an art minor. Tiffany's teachers described her as a very serious student, eager to master whatever subject is before her. Along with excelling in traditional academics, she also produces at the same time what her principal, Carl Martinez, judged to be “incredible” artwork and plans to continue to do both at college. Her AP United States History teacher, James Biggs, pointed out she was consistently engaged in the subject the class was studying and always wrote with both clarity and grace. La Habra High's Josh Danielson
threw himself into activities when he entered La Habra High School after completing Rancho Starbuck Junior High School. First he began working out with the water polo team the summer before his freshman year. Next he auditioned for that year's musical and joined the Well Behaved Villains, an improvisational comedy group, plus competing on the swim team in the spring. As a sophomore he was co-captain of the frosh-soph water polo team, participated in both "To Kill a Mocking Bird "and "MacBeth." In his junior year he became a member of National Honor Society and joined the executive board of Link Crew. His AP English teacher asked Josh to be Co-Editor of the quarterly Scotch Tape. That added a three-day journalism camp at Cal State Long Beach to his schedule along with producing the quarterly paper. Throughout his senior year he added more theatrical events such as "Trouble in River City" and "The Plummer Project" where he offered monologues about the building while leading a tour of parts of the facility, and a principal role in "The Pajama Game." Typically Josh spends 14 ½ hours a day at school with water polo practice at 5:30 a.m., more practice until

5: p.m. and then rehearsal until at least 8 p.m. As a freshman, he received a five on his AP Human Geography exam, as a sophomore he added a five in European History, Junior year he took US History, Calculus and Environmental exams. Josh will be attending Brown University. Nicole Fraga, an equally intense student from Sonora, also plans to attend Brown. Nicole has put into athletics all the energy that Tiffany has put into her art and Josh has put into Theatre. She has taken 21 AP and IB hon-
ors classes and compiled a 4.5 GPA. As a freshman she established four Freeway League track records which still stand in the triple jump, long jump, and 400 meters in 62 seconds and the 4x400 relay. She started each fall off with volleyball and became a fearsome spiker, according to Principal Adam Bailey. At Brown she plans to study to become a psychologist. It wasn't until the Rotary lunch that the Sonora and La Habra grads found out that they were not the only local student choosing Brown.

They can make or break an occasion. “ Like our own lives, a flower has a beginning and it has an ending,” explained Memo Albor of Memo's Flowers and Gift Shop in La Habra. One of Albor’s specialties is creating beautiful weddings. If you come to him with an idea, he said he will help make it into a fairytale. “ Doing this really is a dream come true,” he said. A wedding is a day in a person’s life they will always remember, which is why it is so important to him that his brides and families are happy on their special day. When asked if he had a favorite flower, he said that he loved all flowers the same and that he couldn’t choose a favorite one. “All flowers in their own way create an overall look and feel, I don’t like to tell people no when they come to me for help,” he said. As a longtime business in La Habra, Albor stays pretty busy providing flowers for three to five weddings during the weekends.

Memo explained that when a bride comes to him with an idea it usually begins with an overall “style.” The colors and even the wedding dress can be the deciding factor regarding the theme and overall look of the bride's special day. For Albor , flowers have feelings just as much as the people. “I remember once I was extremely ill, and I was working on a brides bouquet, and literally within a few hours the flowers were completely dead," he said. "I vowed never to touch another flower arrangement if I was ever feeling ill, or down in the dumps.” However, business hasn't always been rosy. Memo shared that there was a moment when the recession hit hard a few years ago and businesses were going under that he almost threw in the towel and closed up his business. He was almost certain that he would never recover from the hit, but he picked himself back up again and remembered that he just had to keep going. Today, with business flourishing again, he is glad that he stuck to his guns and that he didn’t give up. Despite the challenge of being in a competitive business, Albor believes he can offer something special when it

comes to his flowers and arrangements. That is what sets him apart from other flower shops, bridal consultants, and gift shops. “I pride myself on being unique, " he said with a little laugh. He expressed that his creativity for ideas comes from within. He explained that he doesn’t believe in stealing ideas from websites, rather his inspiration comes from his own artistic imagination with a combination of what the person who hires him to take on their big day. Memo’s Flowers and Gift Shop is open Monday through Saturday, and closed on Sundays. Memo expressed that weekdays are
often difficult for those who work long hours, and are trying to plan for their special day. “I will accommodate as best I can, and have often come in on my day off so that I can brainstorm with them without being rushed," he explained. "If you can dream it, he can probably make it happen.

LHPD draws on artistic skill to catch criminals By Jaimee Lynn Fletcher Behind the Badge
She started the same way she always does — perched on the edge of her couch in her living room, lap desk readied and a bright lamp illuminating a blank sheet of paper. Radiohead played in the background — or maybe it was heavy metal that time — but either way, there was music to get her focused. La Habra PD sketch artist Wendy Guandique drew for hours then sent a text of the composite with a message: “How’s this?” The woman who received the text requested changes until the sketch staring back at her was the man she chased down apartment stairs after he grabbed her buttocks in a housing complex. This sketch was one of two Guandique had drawn for the Fullerton Police Department as they investigated the “serial butt grabber” case. Although it was never released to the media, detectives used the drawings as they interviewed victims, Guandique said. Almost every time, police said, the victims identified one drawing as the man who assaulted them. When Fullerton police in February arrested Jose Alfredo Gradilla-Cuevas after an exhaustive five-month investigation, (he later pleaded guilty to 16 counts of misdemeanor sexual battery), Guandique immediately went to the Fullerton PD website to view
the press release which displayed the booking photo. “I knew right away when I saw it my sketch was pretty spot on,” she said. “This was a neat example of how vital witnesses can be for cases. Everything he (Gradilla-Cuevas) was doing was escalating, so it was good they caught him in time.” La Habra PD employs two sketch artists to assist in investigations: Guandique, who works as the secretary to the chief, and Lt. Dean Capelletti, who serves as the investigations bureau commander. Their skill provides an important tool in helping to identify suspects in a variety of crimes from sexual assaults to attempted kidnapping. Their expertise is also something of a rare commodity in Orange County, with La Habra PD being one of just a handful of agencies with in-house sketch artists. “It’s a medium that is not used a lot,” Capelletti said. “So we offer it to any police department in need, as a mutual-aid.”
Artistic discovery
La Habra PD discovered it had two artists in its employ by chance. Capelletti’s artistic inclination was revealed after he poked fun at a colleague more than a decade ago. “You know how it is with police, always making fun of each other,” he said to preface the story. In the winter of 2003, the avian influenza, more commonly known

as the bird flu, became a public health threat in Orange County. Health officials warned the community to steer clear of any dead birds and immediately report them. So when one La Habra officer was called to handle a bird carcass in the road, a pithy cartoon was in order. Capelletti, who once worked as a children’s clothes designer long before wearing a badge, drew a sketch of the officer delivering CPR to the bird and shared it with his fellow officers for a chuckle. Somehow, a copy of the drawing made its way to his superiors. Not long after, Capelletti was sent
to training and certified as the department’s first sketch artist. As he promoted, Capelletti’s heavy work load rendered him unable to sketch very often. He then learned his colleague and friend, Guandique, also had an art background. Guandique joined the department in 2007 as a dispatcher, before serving in the records department, then as secretary to the chief. She grew up loving art and law enforcement. See LHPD Page 15

“As I kid, I was glued to watching ‘America’s Most Wanted’ and they did a feature on composite artists and forensic artists,” she said. “I was just fascinated by the work they did.” Guandique would pull her mother’s encyclopedias off the shelves and thumb through the pages, sketching whatever images piqued her interest. “I remember I used colored pencils to sketch a catalogue of birds and I would try to see how close I could get to the colors and shapes in the pictures,” she said. “That’s how I spent most of my time — drawing. “It’s funny that this whole thing went full circle. I had no idea this is where I would end up — actually doing the very thing I wanted to do as a kid.” Guandique took art classes in high school and broadened her skills in college. When she joined La Habra as a dispatcher, she was interested in becoming certified as a composite sketch artist, but didn’t ask to pursue training. Capelletti encouraged her to inquire about getting certified and in 2011, the department sent her to the 120-hour POST (Police Officer Standards and Training) course. Her training didn’t end there. “Every two years we have to get re-certified because it’s considered a perishable skill,” Guandique said. “And every two years when we come back, they have new tools for us.”
Training to sketch
Both Guandique and Capelletti said while an art background helps, it is not a requirement to become a composite sketch artist. (Capelletti’s impressively realistic drawings of George Clooney and Mark McGwire seem to prove otherwise, but we’ll take their word for it.)
The POST-certified course starts from the basics. Guandique remembered someone in her class drew a stick figure on the first day because they said that’s all they knew how to do, but by the end of the course, their portraits rivaled others with art training. “If you have the passion to do something and you have the discipline to learn, you can excel just as well as somebody who has the natural ability to do it,” she said. The course teaches how to draw a variety of facial features, how to ‘age’ the subject of a photo for missing person cases and how to interview witnesses and victims — a critical part of getting an accurate sketch. “The most important thing is not to influence them at all,” Guandique said. “You can’t feed them any characteristics because you can inadvertently implement something that really isn’t in their memory.” They also use an FBI photo reference book for witnesses to flip through and point to whatever type of chin, hairline, nose or eye shape the suspect had to combine facial features into an accurate sketch. “A person might not remember exactly every part of the face if you ask them to describe it,” Capelletti said. “That’s why you separate it into pieces then draw the composite of what they point out.” It can take several hours to put together a sketch, even then the witness or victim usually asks for changes, until it best represents what they remember. “Once they’re able to see the draft of the sketch, it can trigger something and they might remember more specific characteristics,” Guandique said. LH natives work to promote and help others through fitness By Jay Seidel La Habra Journal
Two La Habra natives are sharing their passion for fitness and body building with the community of Orange County. Twin brothers Jim and John Younger have launched The Orange County Amateur Elite Bodybuilding & Powerlifting Competition & Expo, which will be held Saturday, June 25, at Valencia Auditorium, 500 Bradford Ave., in Placentia. The event will include a Men & Women’s Bodybuilding, Physique and Bikini competition with Novice, Open, Masters and Classic Physique categories. The bodybuilding competition is sanctioned by the National Amateur Bodybuilding Association. They will also be hosting a Powerlifting competition with 12 weight classes sanctioned
by the Elite Powerlifting Association. The event will feature a 23,000-sq ft. expo area that includes a variety of vendors and exhibitors from local and well-known companies providing samples, product discounts and information about products and services. The Youngers set up the event to not only inspire and educate people on fitness, but to also give back. "In addition to being a high energy and exciting event, we will be giving back to our community by helping the less fortunate with hygiene items, clothing and food by donating a portion of the total proceeds generated from this event to Servants Of Salvation of Orange County," said John Younger. The Youngers explained that they have enjoyed helping others in the community. They started the non-profit 501c organization, Servants of Salvation in 2012. "Since all of our team members have been into fitness and weightlifting for many years," John Youngr said, "we decided to combine these two passions in order to generate funds to continue to help the less fortunate in our community." Attendees at the event can expect to meet individuals of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels from people exploring fitness and where to start, to professionals that have been in fitness and bodybuilding for many years, according to John Younger. "They will gain knowledge of nutrition, great products and services and the success others have gained from making a change to a healthy lifestyle," he said. weight to be part of the event. "This event is meant for all individuals of all levels to celebrate their own accomplishments and goals they have obtained through fitness," Jim Younger said. "We would like people that are not into fitness yet to also come out and enjoy this event. Our goal is to make this event inclusive to everyone with knowledge, positivity and support from all involved." The two Sonora alumni have always been active in sports, such as football, baseball and soccer. John explained that they got in to bodybuilding at a young age after watching their dad workout in the garage. He explained that it solidified their commitment to fitness as part of their lifestyle. Jim Younger explained that their motivation comes from continuous goals that they set for themselves, reaching those goals and striving for more. He added that introducing others to fitness and helping them reach their
fitness goals also keeps them motivated. "Overcoming and helping others overcome their various issues through fitness and health can be beneficial to everyone." While Jim now resides in Fullerton and John resides in Orange, the two still stay connected with La Habra and want to help people from all over the community. La Habra edges Rio Mesa, advances to CIF Semifinals By Jason Burch La Habra Journal
B e h i n d H a n n a h J o h n s o n’s 13-strikeout pitching performance, the Lady Highlanders softball team defeated Rio Mesa 4-2 in Thursday’s quarterfinal game. Johnson allowed only one run and recorded every single out in the game, despite being replaced to begin the sixth inning. Harley Wells entered the game and faced two batters, but gave up back to back singles. Head Coach Steve Harrington quickly made the change back to Johnson after the latter single got past the centerfielder and rolled to the fence, bringing Rio Mesa to within one run at 3-2. Harrington said the move to bring in Wells was an attempt to change up the pace and give Rio Mesa a little bit of a different look.

“I thought I would try to change it up a little bit, but for whatever reason it didn’t quite pan out for us today,” Harrington said. “More often than not Harley is effective, very rarely does that happen, so I will just look at it as a fluke.” Johnson got back into the circle and retired the next three Rio Mesa batters in a row, striking out a pair. “Hannah has really got a great mindset,” Harrington said. “She is welcoming the challenge and we are riding her coattails.” The Lady Highlanders quickly regained the momentum in the bottom half of the sixth. Johnson led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. After her pinch runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt, Kira Cauley stepped up with an RBI single to bring in the game’s final run and give La Habra some breathing room heading into the final inning. Johnson allowed a pair of hits in the sevenWth to the same duo responsible for Rio Mesa’s first score, Kiana Abellera and Taise Thompson. With the tying run in scoring position, Johnson got Jocelyn Soto to flyout deep to centerfield, allowing the La Habra crowd to collectively exhale. Despite the threat Rio Mesa presented in the seventh, Johnson’s teammates were confident she would close the game out strong. “When she came out and struck out the first three batters, I knew [Johnson] was ready today,” Cauley said. Butler singled to bring Cauley home and give the Lady Highlanders an early lead. “Kira has been on fire for us,” Harrington said. “We want to win this whole thing, so I just have to stay in there for my team,” Cauley said. La Habra battled back to take the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning. Johnson, helped herself with a leadoff double and came
home on a Jayanna Perez RBI single. After Cauley Walked, runners were on the corners when they successfully pulled off a delayed double steal to extend the lead. La Habra will next take on the No. 4 seed Valley View in the semifinal game at Moreno Valley. “Where we are at right now, everybody is going to give us their best game and that is what these kids have had to learn, and they have learned,” Harrington said. “In my opinion they have the complete makeup of what a team should be… they listen to criticism well, support each other, and hold each other accountable, it’s been a marvelous experience.”
