The new Platinum Series Tilting Head mortiser is the latest in our series of hollow-chisel mortisers. With the tilting head and tilting table, users are able to make compound angled mortises precisely and easily. The 1.5 HP TFEC motor easily powers through hardwoods while the rack and pinion plunge mechanism moves the hollow chisel easily and accurately. Cast iron trunions for the table tilt and head tilt have positive stops at 90 degrees to easily return to a baseline setup. Dovetail ways on 3 axes provide the precision needed for any type of joinery project. Rack and pinion movements for each of the tilt movements make it easy to adjust to the perfect angle. Dual hold-down clamps hold the material down on the table while a cam-action clamp holds stock against the fence. This machine is sure to expand the range and quality of your projects.

The Platinum Series V-way Slot Mortiser allows users to easily and accurately cut slot mortises for a wide variety of projects. The 3-axis table raises and lowers on dovetail ways by an acme threaded rod for smooth operation. The table glides effortlessly on bearings in v-ways. The single-handle operation allows for side to side and plunge movements with one hand. The double-boxed welded steel frame is very rigid and contains a storage compartment with door. Standard features include miter gauge, two position hold down clamp, dowel indexing accessory, hinged chuck guard, and reversible motor. • Motor 3 HP - 220 volts - single phase • Chuck capacity 5/8" • Work table size 8" x 19.5" • Side to side travel 11" • Plunge travel 5.5" • Table vertical travel 5.5" • Maximum mortise height above table 9.5" • Miter fence 18" x 2-1/4" • Drill index centers 16, 20, 22, 25 mm • Height to top of machine 42" • Base size 20.5" x 27" • Weight 270 lbs

Brief Mortise History A mortise is a cavity cut into a timber to receive a tenon. Mortise-and-tenon joints are among the strongest joints in woodworking and have been used for thousands of years by woodworkers around the world. First seen around 2500 BC on wooden ships, the tenon and mortise joint is both simple and strong. The oldest known use dates from the Early Neolithic Linear Pottery culture, where it was used in the constructing of the wooden lining of water wells. There are many styles of mortise joints that may be glued, pinned, or wedged to lock it in place. Whether you are the most advanced woodworker or just getting into the industry, Laguna Tools Mortisers can get the job done. • Open mortise – a mortise that has only three sides. • Stub mortise – a shallow mortise, in which depth depends on the size of the timber; also a mortise that does not go through the workpiece (as opposed to a "through mortise"). • Through mortise – a mortise that passes entirely through a piece. • Wedged half-dovetail – a mortise in which the back is wider, or taller, than the front, or opening. The space for the wedge initially allows room for the tenon to be inserted; the presence of the wedge, after the tenon has been engaged, prevents its withdrawal. It is sometimes called a "suicide" joint, since it is a "one-way trip". • Through wedged half-dovetail – a wedged half-dovetail mortise that passes entirely through the piece.
