Smoke Alarm Campaign

Saving lives through prevention, education and community service In 2014, the Los Angeles Fire Department announced several new initiatives to increase fire safety awareness and the availability of smoke alarms. While there are many contributing factors to residential fire fatalities, it’s a simple fact that smoke alarms save lives. The campaign will continue to expand as we build new partnerships within the City. • The Smoke Alarm Field Education (S.A.F.E.) Program provides regular neighborhood fire safety education and free smoke alarms. • “15 Minutes of Safety” is a program that provides fire safety materials, including Fire Smart brochures and Smoke Alarm Campaign flyers to 5th grade students in Los Angeles. • The LAFD Fire Casualty Reduction Task Force will examine and analyze the factual circumstances surrounding any residential structure fire with significant injury or death in an attempt to identify trends or circumstances to help prevent future tragedies. • Collaboration with MySafe:LA and the American Red Cross in neighborhood smoke alarm canvassing events. Thanks to the generous donations of smoke alarms from our partners at First Alert, the Fire Foundation and MySafe:LA, the LAFD distributed approximately 22,000 smoke alarms to the residents of Los Angeles in 2014.
