Local Government & the news that matters

Mayor says his speech presented a true reflection The Executive Mayor of the Greater Letaba Municipality, Mr City Modjadji, responded spontaneously to the comments on his budget speech by residents of Modjadjiskloof in last week’s edition of Bulletin. We were accused, at least by implication, of presenting a one-sided picture of a dire situation in the town. All those who wrote to your newspaper do not dispute our story on the article published on the 15th July 2016. Our achievements are genuine and out in the open for everyone to see. When we said we built particular infrastructure or any kind of services like Highmast and street lights, paving in the villages, libraries, Community halls, outdoor gyms, upgrades of stadia like Kgapane, Senwamokgope and Mokwakwaila and so forth, it is a true reflection of the work on the ground. We acknowledge the complains and frustrations raised by some community members of Modjadjiskloof, but this will not write-off the real milestones and achievements made by Greater Letaba Municipality in the last five years. In terms of service delivery in Modjadjiskloof, a lot has been done, like upgrading of main Street (Botha Street), the building of the library, upgrading of the swimming pool, revamp of parks, putting up the outdoor gymnasium, upgrading of the internal streets,

However, we only published extracts from the Mayor’s budget speech and quoted him verbatim. This caused a stir and the Mayor decided to react to last week’s “debate”. We did not speak to him about the speech or the contents thereof, we did not speak to any of his officials about it and we did not ask for his com-

tennis court, streetlight from town to Mokgoba, and so forth. We have recently appointed a service provide to rehabilitate all the remaining streets in Modjadjiskloof. We experience continuous water pipe bursts because of the old asbestos pipes and insufficient water supply due to low capacity of the Politsi Purification Plant. The municipality is working hand-in-hand with the relevant Authorities (Mopani District Municipality and Lepelle Northern Water) whose responsibility is solely to supply water in Modjadjiskloof and Kgapane. To deal with the water challenges, we are busy working on upgrading the capacity of Politsi Purification Plant which will bring relief in the community of Modjadjiskloof and Kgapane. Mopani District Municipality has

also made a commitment to replace the old asbestos pipes and upgrade the bulk supply pipe lines which service both Modjadjiskloof and Kgapane. It is true that we sometimes experience electricity outages due to the old infrastructure. The Municipality has put aside money to upgrade the electricity infrastructure. We are also exploring avenues to be electricity efficient by changing our electricity infrastructure to smart meters. The electricity master plan has been approved by council and will be rolled out soon. We plead with the communities for support because none of this is possible without their backing. We still encourage residents to preserve water as we are still going through this challenge. We have strengthened our programme for servicing the streets, sewer,

grass cutting and others. More emphasis has been put through the EPWP which are assisting the team working around town to make sure that the bushes are kept at low level. The municipality wants to appreciate and acknowledge the efforts made by some members of Modjadjiskloof Community Forum who assist in improving the situation in this lovely town. We agree that more can be done through concerted efforts by the municipality and the residents of Modjadjiskloof. The blaming games and finger pointing will not improve our situation nor assist us to grow our town. As much as we make efforts to always have our streets clean, we encourage residents to work with us to make sure that our town always looks clean. We condemn littering, unappropriated garden disposing and dumping of building rubbles on the streets. We want to encourage residents to also clean the front yard of their houses to keep their house looking smart at all time. Together we are bound to achieve our goal of a clean, better looking, well serviced town.

We support all actions aimed at combating gender-based violence and the abuse of children
