Wine show fever hits our region

Hulpvaardige Oom Tobie vandag begrawe Mnr Tobie van den Heever (86), ’n inwoner van Tzaneen sedert 1961, is na ‘n kort siekbed oorlede. Sy dogter, Hettie Drake, skryf: “Daar is soveel wat ek kan vertel, soveel wat ek kan deel... My Pa, dit het nie saak gemaak dat jy nie hoogs gekwalifiseerd was nie, dat jy nie Engels wou praat nie, dat die blieng van die lewe nie vir jou belangrik was nie. Al die boererate, die praktiese kennis, die ‘man wag ek help jou gou’ het vir my en almal om my so blywend geword dat dit ook nou deel van baie van ons se lewens is. Niks was te veel of te

groot vir Oom Tobie nie (soos meeste jou geken het), nooit te vroeg of te laat, nooit te ver of te naby, te warm of te koud, dit was altyd reg net solank Pa dit kon doen. Pa, dankie vir die voorbeeld wat Pa gestel het met Pa se lewe... tot ons mekaar weer sien.” Van den Heever word oorleef deur sy vrou, Sarie, agt kinders, skoon-, stief-, klein- en agterkleinkinders. Die familie bedank almal vir gebede, ondersteuning, boodskappe, besoeke, sms’e en telefoonoproepe. Sy begrafnisdiens is vandag (Vrydag 12 Julie) om 11:00 in die AP Kerk.

Katryn Barwise from Tzaneen was selected as a national semifinalist to represent Limpopo at Miss Earth South Africa ‘13. She has spent a week in Cape Town to attend workshops, events and charity projects with the Miss Earth SA Team. The group of 24 national semi-finalists stayed in three different luxury hotels and the were chauffered all over the Peninsula, to visit various sight-seeing spots, places of entertainment, schools and numerous other interesting places. Katryn was chosen with two other finalists to attend the Gordon’s Bay Winter Wonderland Festival of Lights, where they were part of the parade and represented the Miss Earth SA brand. This was one of the highlights of the visit, Katryn said, as she got to meet Mr Richard Loring the Producer and Director of “African Footprint” The ladies also visited the Southern African Foundation for the conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB), the international body dedicated to seabird rehabilitation. The semifinalists worked at SANCCOB’s facilities, helping out with everyday chores, cleaning the penguin pools, making them Formula which is fish liquidized and mixed with vitamins and supplements. Finally the ladies had a beach photoshoot on Blouberg Beach. The last evening in Cape Town they watched a musical production by Loring, that showcased Cape Town’s culture. Back in Johannesburg the group went for a tour at the SAPPI Mills, to see how they make paper. SAPPI is one of the sponsors of Miss Earth SA. The week was ended by taking part in a charity project with Jersey’s 4 Jozi where Katryn and four other ladies accompanied Tamerin Jardine, the reigning Miss Earth SA ‘12, to donate jersey’s at a school in Soweto and planting 95 trees at a school in Orange Farm to celebrate the 95 years of Nelson Mandela’s life. “It was a life changing experience and I enjoyed every second of my journey with the Miss Earth SA organisation,” said Katryn.

Limpopo wine lovers can look forward to yet another exciting wine show when the seventh FNB Limpopo Wine Show returns to Meropa Casino on 25 and 26 July. As hundreds of visitors since the first show in 2007 will attest, the festival is designed to delight wine enthusiasts with the latest vintages, matured favourites and new wine accessories and gadgets on the market. A fun night out for both the guru and novice, the FNB Limpopo Wine Show is proudly brought to you by FNB Private Clients. As in all previous six years, the exhibitor line-up will turn out an A-list of Cape producers. Around forty producers will include prestigious and award-winning cellars such as Quoin Rock, Vrede en Lust, Raka, Cape Point Vineyards, Ataraxia, Clos Malverne and Spier.
