Police reward young village hero Mr Sipho Sebela (28) from Burgersdorp near Lenyenye has become an almost instant hero. On Monday he saw a police vehicle collide with a VW Golf. The police vehicle had two prisoners who were to appear in court. Sebela ran to the scene to save the people who were involved in the accident. He found the two police men injured and helped them out of the vehicle. The two prisoners were still locked up in the police vehicle and he unlocked the vehicle. He realized that the prisoners were not hand-cuffed and he hand-cuffed them and took the gun that was lying on the floor. “I just wanted to save the people as I thought that the car was going to burn,” he said. The two prisoners were later taken to the Letaba Hospital and were treat-

ed for minor injuries and taken back to the Hoedspruit prison. The two policemen are still in Mediclinic Tzaneen. The Police rewarded Sebela with a R4 000 cheque as a token of appreciation. Sebela said that the money will help him feed his family, as his mother is not working and they are a big family. Major General Maggie Mathebula applaud Sebela for being brave and saving the men. She added that this is a sign that the police are not alone in fighting crime. Seen in the photo above are Col Schalk van Schalkwyk(Maake Police commander), Maj Genl Mathebula, Mr Sipho Sebela and Mr Marothi Letsoalo (CPF Chairperson), at the handing over of the cheque to Sebela. Mopani District Municipality (MDM) mayor Joshua Matlou handed over uniforms to 168 pupils at Mavalani High School near Giyani. Each of the 168 learners received shoes and socks, trousers or skirts, shirts, ties, and pullovers for winter. This was part of the district’s celebration to mark and remember the June 16 Youth Day, and partly to encourage the school to do more after it managed to improve its matric results from 30% to 74,3% last year. The school made the news last year in January when it was discovered that more than 25 pupils were pregnant. “You may have been the laughing stock of the country after last year’s incident, but you managed to turn things around. To me, that is commendable and I hope you will not just remain there, but will improve even more this year,” he said. The chairman of the school’s governing body, Mr Moses Zitha, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying it would improve morality with the pupils who previously did not have uniforms.
