Junior yachtsmen claim victory Three pupils from Unicorn Preparatory School in Tzaneen, David Morris, Tim Elphinstone and Kieran Bremner, and 2 from Merensky, Doug Elphinstone and Kyle Smith, competed in the Northvaal Interschools Sailing Regatta at Victoria Lake in Germiston over the weekend. Once again Gauteng has had to wave goodbye to the Junior School division trophy, as the boys from Tzaneen brought it home. The Unicorn team, each competing in a different class of yacht, performed consistently, with David coming in second overall, Tim fifth and Kieran tenth, but also because they had

a full team of three. Kieran also received the trophy for winning the O’9-er class, sailing the yacht donated to the Mountain Yacht Club youth programme by the Rotary Club of Haenertsburg. Tim was also sailing a yacht recently donated by Rotary. Doug and Kyle, sailing a borrowed Enterprize, facing very stiff competition in the High School section, came in 25th in a very big fleet of competitors. The boys and parents had a very enjoyable and busy weekend, and would like to thank Unicorn, Sue Elphinstone for T-shirts and caps, and Haenertsburg Rotary for the yachts.

The yachtsmen from Merensky and Unicorn are Kyle Smith, Doug Elphinstone, Kieran Bremner, David Morris and Timothy Elphinstone.

Atherstone chosen for SA team Tzaneen’s own Christopher Atherstone played a major role in the Limpopo Impalas cricket team’s performance when they scored three victories from five matches in the Rural Cricket SA week in Nelspruit recently. In their first match the Impalas defeated Border Village by nine wickets before losing to Border Aloes by ten runs in their second fixture. The defeat was followed by two comfortable victories against EP Midlands by ten wickets and Boland West by six wickets. The two wins were ended by a 30 run defeat against EP Grahamstown in their last fixture of the competition. Christopher Atherstone, the Impalas’ opening bowler, was in devastating form during the tournament, to end up as the best amongst the bowlers with 18 wickets in the five matches. Atherstone’s best bowling achievements were against Border Village,

when he claimed six wickets for fifteen runs in ten overs. Atherstone along with fellow Impala Steven Mallula were rewarded for their outstanding batting and bowling feats by being selected for the RCSA team. In addition, Impalas coach Mandla Mashambyi was chosen as the coach of the RCSA side.
