INSPIRED EDUCATION Where Success Begins. Creating a Love of Learning

Rosemary Wells with kindergartener Zoe Vermilyea, daughter of Kate and Jody Vermilyea. Cross Schools strives to create an atmosphere in which children develop a passion for learning through small classes (1 to 10 teacher/student ratio), rigorous academics, various enrichment courses, and faith based learning. The school’s students test, on average, one to two grades above their current grade level on nationally normed standardized tests.

Rosemary Wells selected Cross Schools as the first stop in a tour to promote her latest book, Hand in Hand. Wells is the author and illustrator of hundreds of children’s books, including the popular series Max & Ruby. The event featured a Meet & Greet and Book Signing, as well as a Young Artists Workshop for grades kindergarten through fourth and a Young Writers Workshop for grades fifth through eighth. Students attend weekly chapel programs and participate in community service projects. Athletic offerings include cross country, basketball, golf, soccer, and volleyball, encouraging teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness. A full range of after school and year round programming is available for children through fifth grade.

Welcome to Lady Lowcountry OCTOBER MARKS THE BEGINNING of my favorite time of the year. The mornings begin to usher in cooler breezes and the leaves lose themselves from the trees and begin to gently swirl toward the ground. Sweaters, jackets, scarves and hats are moved to more prominent places in my closet. Quiet time with God while taking long, peaceful walks on the empty beach. The smell of sweet potatoes baking in the oven while TERRI BILOTTA I search for special recipes to impress my in-laws for our upterri@ladylowcountry.com coming family gathering. Leisurely strolling through our local stores, taking my sweet time to find that perfect gift for the folks I love. Yes, October is the perfect time of the year for quiet reflection. A perfect time to enjoy the moment and start planning ahead, but not just for the holidays. Perhaps this October will mark the beginning of a more benevolent me, a more forgiving me, a gentler and more understanding me. Perhaps as this October comes and ushers in its changes it can also bring about changes in me, like the shedding of the summer leaves. May God reveal his Blessings.

Grace + Knowledge = Civility This is what the Lord says: Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is close at hand and my righteousness will soon be revealed. — Isaiah 56: 1 Isaiah was aware of the relationship that was diminishing between God and his people. Through poetry in the book of Isaiah we can find words of training and love that help the people see their savior. Our savior shows us how to treat one another and how to develop a personal relationship with our creator. Like many parents and grandparents we are seeing the lost art of Etiquette, which is the rules of manners. Manners show that we respect one another and have respect for ourselves. Last spring I began searching for an etiquette class for my three teens. After going to some training seminars and researching different programs I found one that would be fun and instructive. I believe teens learn the most when they are having fun and hanging out with their peers and after discussing the idea of an etiquette class with other teen parents I spent the summer putting together a monthly social for this school year for fifth through twelfth graders. S.E.T. for Life is the name I came up with because when young people learn what the rules of etiquette are and why we use them they will have the choice to use them for the rest of their lives. “Consideration” will be the main focus in every class. When a teen experiences someone being considerate to them and can identify how it affects them in a positive way they want to be considerate to others. That is what Isaiah is talking about when he says “…my righteousness will soon be revealed.” I believe God is showing us that he is not interested in behavior modification but heart transformation. That is my heart’s desire, for each and every teen that comes to a S.E.T. for Life Social. What they learn through discussion, skits and different exercises their hearts will be transformed to see how consideration, respect and integrity can transform them and build confidence in them at any social setting.

8

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

October 2016

The social will be held once a month, a total of eight. The time consist of forty-five minutes to an hour of etiquette following a ballroom dance lesson taught by Armando from the Fred Astaire Dance Studio ending with a social time of refreshments, time to practice the dances they will be learning throughout the year and enjoying each other’s company with pleasant conversation. The classes will be held at the Bluffton United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at: 101 Calhoun Street in Downtown Bluffton. The first Class will be on Saturday, October 1st, 2016, from 6:30 to 9pm. Each class will cost $20 and will need to be paid in advance. There will also be a Christmas and Spring Event held at the Belfair Clubhouse where the students can practice there etiquette with one another in a formal setting. In the spring after the class pertaining to table manners the students will also have the opportunity to experience a five course meal. These three events will be priced separately. The dress code for the socials will be enforced for all participating students. The dress code is: Ladies — fingertip length dresses or skirts, dress shoes (no t-shirts or flip flops). Gentlemen — dress slacks, button down dress shirt, dress shoes tie and/or sports coat (no sports shoes). You can contact Tearsa Winn at 843-540-4323, email tearsawinn4life@gmail.com or visit www.S.E.T.Webs.com to sign up your student(s).

The lessons of

SURVIVAL

by JUDITH HENDERSON MY NAME IS JUDITH HENDERSON. My husband Gary and I have lived on Hilton Head Island for 17 years. We moved here from Toronto, Ontario, Canada where we had resided for 5 years. We knew since 1983 that Hilton Head would be our place of retirement. We started coming here with our children when we lived on a mountain outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee. We all loved Hilton Head. Gary and I always knew that our children and their families would always visit us here. So, when Gary retired from M.A.C. in 1999, down we came. I was diagnosed with breast cancer about a year and a half ago. The diagnosis was made at South Coast Imaging during a recommended mammogram and follow-up ultrasound and biopsy. I never suspected the diagnosis since I have always been diligent with self-examinations. I was numb but very calm. I think part of my calmness was due to Dr. Wade and staff, who are very caring, gentle people and provided clear and understandable information. Gary, my scientist husband, immediately began to research breast cancer doctors and treatments. We chose Dr. Rochelle (Shelly) Ringer, Breast Surgeon, Director of MUSC Bluffton Breast Health Center. We met with Dr. Ringer and decided that she was the right person for my situation. Dr. Ringer and her Breast Care Navigator, Judy Horton, led us through the many options available to address the cancer which was at an early stage. They also helped us put together our total treatment team of Dr. Ringer; Dr Paul Saconn, radiation oncologist; Dr. Gary Thomas, medical oncologist; and Dr. Laura Knobel, my primary care physician. Gary and I are so grateful for these superb, caring physicians and their equally caring staffs. We have total trust in them. They answer every one of our questions, and we are active participants in all decisions. Gary never missed one of my appointments. He was there with me every step of the way. My gratitude for him is immeasurable. Gary and I are rather private people. We chose to share my diagnosis with only our children, their spouses, my sisters, my brother in-law and three close friends. (Gary is an only child and has no siblings.) For us this was absolutely the right decision. Our family and friends were scared, but very supportive. Prayers and good wishes came every day. To most people our life seemed normal. On June 3, 2015, I had a partial mastectomy in same day surgery at Hilton Head Hospital. Everything progressed well and I was home from the hospital around 4pm. I healed very well from the surgery, and my radiation therapy took place during the month of August. I also healed well from the radiation. Lots of 100% pure aloe vera was used for months and months. Chemotherapy was not recommended, but I was put on a five year regimen of an estrogen inhibitor,

Anastrozole, which I am tolerating well. I now see each of my doctors every six months and will do so for the next five years. My prognosis is good. I am truly blessed. My experience with breast cancer has changed our lives. We are so much more patient with each other. We laugh often and never get angry. Our lives are more simple and uncomplicated. We appreciate every moment of every day. My advice to other women dealing with breast cancer is: • Maintain a regular schedule to the best of your ability. • Do the simple things that you enjoy. • Listen to your favorite music. Sing along. • Read a new book. Re-read your favorite book. • Follow your doctors’ instructions exactly. • Bathe and dress each day. Put on simple make-up. • Smile at people. • Ask for help when you need it. • Be patient • Trust in yourself, your family, your friends, your doctors, your God. • Believe in the power of prayer. • Never let go of hope. My advice to woman who have not personally experienced breast cancer: • Do regular breast self-exams. • Discuss with your doctor how often you should have a mammogram. The prayer that helps me through every day is the “Memorare.” I have carried a copy of it in my wallet for many, many years. I say it at least once every day. It is my “go to” when I am in need.

PUMPKIN TIME!

Dail BREAD

by LORENA BEST

SOMEONE SHARED WITH ME the following quote correlating what it is like to be a Christian to a pumpkin. Since I am focusing on recipes with pumpkin for October, I thought the following was just too adorable not to forward onto my friends of Lady Lowcountry. A 10-year old little girl was asked by another classmate, “What is it like to be a Christian?” The girl replied, “It’s like being a pumpkin. God picks you from the patch, brings you in, and washes all the dirt off of you. Then he cuts open the top and scoops out all of the yucky stuff. He removes the seeds of doubt, hate, greed, etc., and then he carves you a new smiling face and puts his light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.”

Pumpkin Dump Cake 29 oz can pumpkin puree 12 oz evaporated milk 3 eggs 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon of salt 3 teaspoon of cinnamon 1 box yellow cake mix 1 cup chopped pecans 3/4 cup butter Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar, salt and cinnamon in a medium size bowl. Pour batter into a greased 9x13 pan. Sprinkle dry cake mix over top. Sprinkle pecans over cake mix. Lastly, drizzle melted butter on top. Bake 50 minutes. Serve with a dollop of whip cream.

Pumpkin Chicken Pot Pie 6 small sugar pumpkins or acorn squash olive oil salt, pepper, & allspice 1 medium onion diced 2 tablespoons olive oil 3 cloves garlic minced 2 carrots peeled and chopped 2 parsnips peeled and chopped 16 oz mushrooms sliced 1/4 cup flour 3 cups chicken stock 2 cups diced cooked chicken 2 tablespoons fresh chopped thyme or 1 tablespoons dried thyme 1 tablespoons fresh chopped sage or 1 1/2 teaspoon dried sage 1 package frozen puff pastry dough thawed 1 egg plus 1 tablespoon water for egg wash 12

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

October 2016

Preheat oven 400 degrees. If pumpkins or squash do not sit level, cut a thin slice off bottoms to correct. Next, cut tops off and remove seeds. Brush or rub insides with olive oil and sprinkle with salt, pepper and allspice. Bake for 30 minutes in a greased pan (should still be firm to prevent getting too soft with additional baking time with filling). While baking pumpkins, saute onion and garlic in oil in large pan until golden. Add carrots, parsnips, and mushrooms and saute until tender. Sprinkle flour over vegetables and saute additional 2 minutes stirring to coat. Add chicken, thyme, sage, salt and pepper to taste. Remove pumpkins from oven and ladle filling into. Cut pastry dough into squares that will cover and overlap tops of pumpkins. Cover each pumpkin with a square. Brush egg wash over each square. Use a cookie/pie crust cutter or a knife to cut fall leaf shapes out of the pastry dough for a decorative touch. Lay leaves on top of square pastry covers, using the eggwash as the “glue.” Brush leaves with egg wash. Bake 20 minutes until puff pastry is golden brown.

COOKING WITH KIDS

A little autumn fun in the kitchen with the kids — candy apples and popcorn balls are an October tradition at our house!

Popcorn Balls Ingredients 2 cups sugar 1 1/3 cups water 1/2 cup light corn syrup 1 teaspoon white vinegar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 18 cups popped corn Directions In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, water, syrup, vinegar, and salt. Cook over high heat until mixture reaches 255 degrees F (hard-ball stage) on a candy thermometer. Stir in vanilla. Pour over popped corn, tossing gently to coat. When mixture is cool enough to handle, press popcorn into 3-inch balls with lightly greased hands. Cool completely on waxed paper.

Candy Apples Ingredients 9 assorted apples, room temperature 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup heavy cream, room temperature 3/4 cup coarsely chopped cashews, for dipping Flaky sea salt, such as Maldon, for pressing 2 ounces white chocolate, chopped Directions Insert a 5-inch dowel or nontoxic twig into the stem end of each apple. Combine sugar and corn syrup in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan, and stir. Cover, and cook over medium-high heat until sugar melts. Uncover, and continue to cook, swirling occasionally, until mixture is dark golden, about 10 minutes. Slowly drizzle in heavy cream. Remove from heat, and stir until smooth. Transfer caramel to a small metal bowl. Let stand 3 minutes to let caramel thicken slightly, then dip bottom of 1 apple to test if caramel is thick enough. If most of the caramel runs off of apple, let caramel cool 1 to 2 minutes more, then try again.

Dip 3 apples, including test apple, 1 at a time, into caramel to coat three-quarters of each apple. Let excess drip off, and scrape bottom of apples against the side of bowl (if caramel begins to harden, reheat in bowl over a pot of simmering water). Immediately after coating each apple, dip into nuts, using your fingers to help them adhere. Transfer each apple as decorated to a baking sheet lined with parchment or a nonstick baking mat, and let set completely, about 30 minutes. Coat 3 more apples with caramel as above, this time pressing each with salt flakes along top edge of caramel immediately after coating. Transfer to lined baking sheet, and let set. Coat the 3 remaining apples with caramel. Transfer to lined baking sheet, and let set. Place chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of barely simmering water. Stir until melted and completely smooth. Fill a small resealable plastic bag with chocolate, and snip a tiny hole in 1 corner. One at a time, hold the 3 plain caramel apples horizontally over baking sheet, drizzle with chocolate in a back-and-forth motion, spinning apple as you drizzle. Return to baking sheet to set, about 30 minutes. October 2016

Dedicated to Your Wellness By CATHY ULMER My family has been a part of the Bluffton community since the mid 1800’s. My parents, Cathie and Alex Ulmer, instilled hard-working values in me and taught me to have a love for people. My mom was a teacher, so naturally I wanted to grow up to teach. But that all changed in high school when I met my chemistry teacher, Steve Witowich. He taught me a love for chemistry that forever changed my life. With this driving passion and love of chemistry, I also knew that I wanted to somehow give back to the community. During my first year of pharmacy school, I started working at a local pharmacy which gave me exposure to an inspiring home-town experience. I loved working at a quaint, independent pharmacy with a passion for customer service. This showed me a side of pharmacy I fell in love with: the personal relationships with my patients and helping them beyond the medicine. The exposure to this type of pharmacy was fueling the fire in me to open something of my own. Once I graduated pharmacy school, I was offered a job at Walgreens. This was a wonderful opportunity to get the exposure of how a corporate pharmacy runs, since I had only had experience at an independent pharmacy. My mentor and boss, Bonnie Meyerink, quickly started to also become a close friend. My time with Walgreens made me realize that the most enjoyable part of my job was finding solutions to my patients’ medical needs and building relationships with these patients. With the loving support of my husband, Nate Ulmer, the realization to move forward to open my own pharmacy soon became a reality. Nate would give up his career as a land surveyor to be a stay-athome father with our children. In addition to my husband, my sister, Cindy Ulmer, was also looking for a career change. With her deep seeded roots in the Bluffton community, it was a natural transition to bring her on board. My mentor, Bonnie, was also looking for a change. Although she was not looking at the pharmacy side, she was looking at opportunities to cook nutritious meals for clients. As we all collaborated ideas, we wanted to open a place that would incorporate all health needs. Ulmer Family Pharmacy & Wellness Center sets out to encompass all your health needs. We are excited to offer services to our patients that are difficult to find. We carry hard-to-get medical supplies, and offer 24-hour service to our hospice community and delivery. Soon, we will offer health care courses. As part of our wellness side, Bonnie’s Kitchen Creations offers healthy meals that are cooked in house. We want to make it our mission to reach out to the community for all your health and wellness needs. One of our passions that sets us apart from other pharmacies is our passion for compounding. Compounding is making medications that are specific to the patient’s needs. For example, we can compound medicine into a cream, capsule, liquid, lozenge or a suppository. Additionally, we offer flavoring in simple situations, making a tablet into a suspension for those with difficulty swallowing, and working with patients to find the best way to administer medication. The three major compounding avenues are hormone replacement therapy (HRT), pediatrics and veterinary medicine. These compounds can be 16

Opening OCTOBER

Dail

“We need to get to the point where we are finally willing to give up control so that we can experience the healing we so desperately need.” — Baron Baptiste

In yoga, we work on different parts of our bodies through different poses. This month, let’s focus on our hips. Many people say they can’t do yoga because their muscles and joints are tight. I respond with, “That’s why we all need yoga.” Our hips hold tightness, stress, emotions and fear. Opening our hips up in the following 4-week sequence will reduce stress, connect you with your body and breath, and give you the opportunity to open up and let go of control.

WEEK 2

Complete the warm up and warrior sequence from Week 1. Downward facing dog; Step into a low runner’s lunge, hold for 60 seconds (right leg forward, left leg forward); Repeat 3 times From downward facing dog, bring your knee to nose and press leg back, knee to left elbow, press back, knee to right elbow, press back. Repeat on the left side Cool down: Same as Week 1

WEEK 3

Warm up: Childs Pose, downward facing Dog, forward fold, Mountain Pose Right side: Warrior 1 Pose open up to Warrior 2 Pose, Wide leg forward fold — hold each for 60 seconds; Repeat on each side of body. Repeat on the left side. Repeat up to 3 times on both sides. Cool down: Seated forward fold, one leg seated forward fold, wide leg seated forward fold

Complete Week 1 and Week 2 warm up and sequences. Downward facing dog; Half Pigeon Right side. Extend your right leg back. Bend your knee and open up your hips to the right side, squaring your shoulders to the mat. Sweep your right foot forward. Your right shin parallel to the front of your mat right foot to left hand, right knee to right hand, your left leg lengthens out and parallel to the long side of your mat. Square your hips to the front of room and mat. Walk finger tips back towards hips, fold forward. (Hold 60 seconds or longer.) Downward facing dog Repeat on the left side. Cool down: Same as Week 1

WEEK 4

WEEK 1

WORKOUT PLAN

Complete Week 1, Week 2, Week 3 warm up and sequences. Add in an inversion of your choice. Legs up a wall. Bring your sit bones close to the wall, lift your legs up the wall. Keep active in your core and breath. Head stand, shoulder stand, handstand are also great inversions. Cool down: Same as Week 1 Workout provided by Dancing Dogs Yoga.

MESSAGE

FAITHFULNESS FAITHFULNESS IS THE SEVENTH fruit of the spirit. God is faithful to His word in the past, the present and the future. Which means all of his promises, he keeps. All of the stories he has told us in his word are true. His love will last forever. God is the perfect example of faithfulness. As believers of Christ, we are faithful to God’s word. He directs us and leads us into right partnerships and situations — some that last for a short time and some that may last a lifetime, but all of them help us to GROW in our faith and love. Faithfulness helps us to TRUST that God is in control and has the best in store for us. Faithfulness helps us to KNOW that we will be with Him again in heaven. Faithfulness helps us to BELIEVE in a blessed day and

a blessed future. Faithfulness teaches us to be STRONG in our beliefs that His word is true yesterday, today and tomorrow. In our ever-changing world this can feel like a very different concept. Only one thing in life does not change — that is the love of our creator, and the true meaning in His word. So, as faithful believers we are to read, hear, listen, understand and obey faithfully, even when the world around us says differently. A prime example would be Noah, who faithfully believed and obeyed and built a huge boat for his family and all the animals on dry land. Today, as believers being filled with faithfulness, let us stand ready to reflect God’s love and faithfulness in everything we do.

Skin looking a bit ROUGH lately? by HEIDI DALY

THE DAYS ARE GETTING SHORTER and the temperature is slowly dropping, indicating the end of summer is upon us! Most of us are welcoming the change, and our routines are adapting. This is a great time to assess our skin. Our skin changes with every season, especially the summer months. Sunscreen wearers, environmental damages and UV radiation can cause the complexion to become dry, congested and uneven. A great treatment to rejuvenate the skin is a chemical peel. Peels have made a comeback since the 1990s, when they were the number one cosmetic procedure in the country. These peels can actually deliver better skin results than costly high-tech devices. And it makes sense! Our skin naturally sheds over 30,000 dead skin cells a day. If we don’t routinely slough them off, they remain in the skin, creating a dullness to the complexion. Who is a candidate for a peel? Anyone who has acne scarring, fine lines, uneven pigmentation and sun damage. This is a procedure that accelerates cell turnover and speeds pigment reduction, leaving the skin healthier and a more uniform complexion. As your topmost layer is shed, signals are sent to the living cells below to multiply and move up, to increase collagen production and to make more hyaluronic acid (our body’s natural moisturizer). Chemical peels are a safe way to achieve your skin’s optimal beauty. For many women, their biggest complaint is hyper-pig24

mentation, which comes mostly from hormone imbalance and sun damage. By using an alpha or beta hydroxy acid to remove the top layer of the epidermis, results are virtually guaranteed. There are a variety of different peels and peel cocktails, so I recommend finding a good esthetician who is knowledgeable in this area. Your therapist is able to determine which peel is best suited to your skin. A series of 4-6 peels work best to ensure success because it targets the deeper layers of the epidermis for glowing results. You may discuss incorporating dermaplaning or microdermabrasion with your peel to be a little more aggressive. For best results, your plan of action should be to do a peel every 4 weeks — which is a big commitment. Fall and winter are the best times because the UV level is lower and the environment is more conducive to healing. What should you expect after a peel? You may experience tightness, redness and peeling of the skin for up to a week. Keeping your skin moisturized during the peeling process is crucial, and remember not to pick the skin to avoid complications. It is extremely important to wear a good sunscreen daily to protect the fresh new skin underneath. As always, if you have any skincare questions you can email Heidi Daly at terri@ladylowcountry.com.

Strong with FAITH by LISA RICHARDSON South Coastal FCA JHABIAS AND TYRONE ARE SENIORS on the Bluffton Bobcat football team, and young men of faith, family first. Joshua 1:9 tells us to be strong and courageous. Strength is but one characteristic to describe Jhabias Johnson, who holds the South Carolina State Record for squatting 755 pounds! On the football field, Jhabias is a 3rd year starter, and senior for the Bluffton Bobcat football team. The defensive tackle and nose guard weighs in at 388 pounds! Born and raised in Bluffton, he is a young man who puts the position of faith and family at the goal line. “I grew up around my aunt who was big in the church. She talked to me about Jesus Christ and what he has done for us. I focus on that to keep a strong relationship with him.” Jhabias’ mom Latoya Johnson, his 3 younger siblings; 14 year old brother Rakim and little sisters, Ranai (age 5) and Raiquel (age 3) and Grandma Yvette Johnson also play the most important positions in his life. “I don’t know where I would be without my Grandma and my Mother. They have taught me everything I know today. I love all of them.” Jhabias’ heart is as big as his nearly 400 pound frame. You’d think with his size, there wouldn’t be any challenges from fellow peers. However, he says sometimes “the challenge I face is people asking me why I believe in Jesus Christ and why I will not do things that will go away from my faith and what I believe in.” “My favorite bible verse is Philippians 4:13, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ It keeps me focused to never give up.” That applies to him both spiritually and physically. He was recently named MVP in the annual Bridge Bowl game for his efforts on the field, including quite a leap up and over the goal line into the end zone to score a touchdown. As they say, you can’t stop a train. Friend, cousin and teammate Tyrone Mitchell is a center on the offensive line for 26

Cousins Tyrone Mitchell (left) and Jhabias Johnson are seniors at Bluffton High School. the Bobcats. Center is also where he puts faith in his life. Also born and raised in Bluffton, he is a Lowcountry guy. “I grew up playing football as a kid back in little league as a Bluffton Bulldogs playing on Saturdays, and fell in love with the game. It was fun and I was good at it and wanted to play it every chance I got,” he states. In this sport, “You are not just ON the team, you become a PART of the team. It’s a special bond that develops and is like adding to your family. Brothers are gained, coaches become mentors and you learn things that you may never learn at home.” Tyrone also plays varsity basketball during the winter season. Like Jhabias, he speaks of his family as the starters in his life. “They are a golden bond that can’t be broken. I come from a family of 5 — mom, dad, grandma, and sister. They are loving and caring and everything you can ask for in a family. They support me in everything I do. My sister is amazing and I love her to death. She graduates from Coastal Carolina in December. I can go to my family for anything.” “Faith is important to me and having a strong relationship with Christ. It helps you get through things that you didn’t think you

could. Ways I focus on faith is by talking to God in prayer and going to church. I listen and apply it to my every-day life. My peers know it’s serious to me.” On Friday game nights, Tyrone will lead the team in prayer before and after the game. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a verse that is near to him; “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your paths.” Both Jhabias and Tyrone are playing in their final season of high school football and will hang up their cleats, as both young men will graduate in May 2017. As far as their future, Jhabias would like to go to college and major in sport science and coaching. For Tyrone, he’d like to someday own his own business. Jeremiah 29:11 gives them a promise that is as “golden” as Tyrone describes his family: “For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord, plans for you to prosper, to have a future and a hope.” Speaking of golden, have you seen the fancy gold-bottomed cleats that the Bluffton football team wears on game days? We’ll call it a little Bobcat Bling. Seems to be working for them so far this season.

Friendly Service — with Style by BRENDA CROTEAU “Hello, and welcome to Annie’s Attic!” That is a very familiar greeting heard by everyone visiting Annie’s Attic for the first time or the 99th time. And we really mean it. Because our goal is to let everyone know we are happy to see them and are thankful for their business. My name is Brenda Croteau. I am the owner of Annie’s Attic in Bluffton and Hilton Head. When you visit either store you will find me or Curt Powers, Annie’s general manager and my personal hero for the past 23 years. Our experience has taught us what our discriminating customers are looking for. We provide quality and selection at a fair price. We maintain a high standard of consignment acceptance, rejecting any damaged or broken merchandise, making it more pleasant to shop in our stores. Our ability to preselect and offer our customers the styles, colors and new looking name brand, quality merchandise for a fraction of the retail price has enabled us to meet new customers daily and provide an ever-changing selection for our repeat customers and friends. Curt and I have been in the area since the mid 80’s. We opened Annie’s Attic, furniture and home decor consignment store, in 1993. The name was inspired by Annie, my beloved Maltese puppy. Last year, we opened our Bluffton store on Highway 278. Our large, bright retail showrooms feature accessorized vignettes, so it is easy to envision our beautiful pieces becoming a part of your home. 30

I am very thankful for our success and staying power in a very competitive industry, and I want to thank and attribute this success to a fine group of employees at both locations, who always strive to exhibit a sincere, friendly, helpful attitude to all who visit us. Also, I would like to thank our loyal customer base for their repeat business and countless referrals over the years. So come by and say hello to me and Curt and our wonderful staff at either of our convenient locations. We look forward to meeting you!

www Lady Lowcountry sat down for a chat with Brenda and this is what we found out: Brenda was born in small but beautiful Keene, New Hampshire, where her earliest pastimes were carefully coloring inside the lines of an outlined drawing with her treasured box of Crayola crayons or color-coordinating outfits for paper dolls. Her flair for color and design as a young girl soon developed into a passion. In the 70s she moved to Michigan, where she started a one-woman graphics business, which ultimately led to a position as Creative Director for one of her major clients. That is when her passion for creativity jumped from the page into the furniture world. Her decorating style blossomed as she furnished and decorated model homes, which ultimately led her to Hilton Head with the same company for a unique home marketing concept. Things changed at the company after time, which wasn’t bad in hindsight because that’s how Annie’s Attic was born.

Let Your Faith

BLOOM by SHANNON KAPRIVE

I WAS WALKING INTO THE GARDEN CENTER, when to my right, I noticed the cart containing bundled rose bushes, and the sign that read for $2.99 each. What a bargain! Spotting a clerk, I asked why so cheap….was anything wrong with them? “No,” she said, “just leftover!” I immediately loaded my cart with an abundance of them in all colors and took them home and headed to my garden. Very lovingly, I planted them, and watered them every day, and fertilized them, and fed them, and talked to them, and pruned them, and treated them for disease at the first hint of trouble. It was a daily commitment, as I nurtured “those babies” and encouraged them to grow into something beautiful. And then it happened… One morning as I entered the courtyard, my roses were in full bloom. They were so beautiful… I immediately cut several to bring inside to put in a crystal vase. So wonderful, as I reflected on their beauty. And I couldn’t help but think how beautiful our lives could be as well, if like the roses, we allowed our lives to be led and nurtured by our Heavenly Father. • For He has chosen us and loved us, as I had chosen and loved the roses! In fact, He has loved us unconditionally. • He has fed us with His Word…with streams of living water, • He has pruned us repeatedly with life challenges, cutting us to the core at times with tragedy and pain and challenges, as He molds us into His likeness. • He has restored us and forgiven us so many times while never leaving our side, just as I never left the roses. 32

• And finally, we bloom with radiance from the experience and growth of each trial, so ready to add beauty where we are planted or harvested… truly His radiance so evident as he continues to author our lives for impact in our homes, and with our families, and in our churches, and in our communities… Truly the result of His labor. Yes, the roses bloomed this summer — so beautiful in time, just like our lives! Great is your faithfulness Lord! “Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, but his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness…” — Lamentations 3:22-23. And that’s how it is with our lives and with God. He is so much bigger than we are. Amidst life challenges and daily trials, we have a small vision of life, but He has a big vision that is years beyond our generation. Our daily struggle is so often His victory in the making. A friend of mine the other day said God is always up to something beautiful. It is not for us to know. It is His timing that is so absolutely perfect. Like the cheap, leftover rose cuttings, we may often feel like “we’re not much” — but we are! We are valuable because of “who we are,” because of “who He made us to be,” and with love, nurturing and total commitment, we can easily blossom into his masterpiece! It’s a lifelong journey. May mercy, grace, and eternal bliss become real for you, too, as you step forward in faithfulness each day believing in Him!

Getting Our 2nd

CHANCE

by LORI AGNEW ON DECEMBER 13, 2013, my husband and I were reunited in marriage after 10 years of divorce. We were and continue to be so in love with one another. We cherish our relationship, celebrate our differences, and have learned not to take ourselves too seriously. We realize we must keep the lines of communication open with full transparency knowing that love covers. We know we can get through anything together with the Lord by our side. We now have a Godly marriage where he is the head of the household, the Priest of the family. He loves me like Christ loved the Church and there is nothing I wouldn’t do for him. But it wasn’t always that way… We met, fell in love and were married in a matter of four months. It was something out of a fairy tale and we couldn’t have been happier. He made me feel like a princess and he was my Prince Charming. He had three children from his first marriage and I had one child on my own that he adopted soon after we were married. In the early days of our marriage, we lived in two locations. When the school year was over, we sold my home and moved to where he lived and worked as a Youth Pastor. I was thrilled that God would choose me to be a Pastor’s wife. I guess that’s where things really got complicated. You see, his kids

were his world when he was with them and we were his world when he was with us. We didn’t know how to combine and balance the two. That was the beginning of our demise. I had come from a dysfunctional family so I grew up with a lot of insecurities. He who screamed loudest was the one that was heard. My father was “hit first and talk later.” So I came into the relationship with a lot of issues. When we were together he made me feel so loved and so important. Then the kids would show up and he would abandon me to care for their needs. I wanted us to be a whole family but I felt like I was on the outside of the circle of a game of duck duck goose wondering “where do I fit in?” There is supposed to be a Godly order to things. God first, then your spouse, then your kids. It’s irrelevant that the kids came from your previous marriage and you’ve known them longer. Your spouse is still supposed to come first. But that wasn’t the case in our household. We now know that it was the guilt over his divorce that made Bill put the kids and his family ahead of me. I felt rejected and abandoned and would act out. He didn’t know how to handle it. He wasn’t used to that kind of behavior. It was normalcy to me and I just moved on like I always did. Little did I know that he was “moving on” as well.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. — Romans 8:28, NASB

WHEN THE ONES WE LOVE HURT US, it is a hurt that is difficult to understand. How could someone for whom we would do anything in the world treat us with such disdain? It happens quite often in families, marriages, and friendships. Our first response is to learn from the experience and keep our hedges up to prevent this from ever happening again — but, in reality, it will. Some people are just wired to take advantage of others. Some are wired to be self-centered and don’t understand why others don’t view the world their way. Prayer is the best we can do for those folks. But for the person who has received yet another hurtful experience from a loved one: good job! Really, as long as you aren’t the one who initiated it, you’re okay. The way for you to grow is to develop thick skin and not let things bother you. Brush it off. Give it to God. You don’t have to be hurt. You don’t have to understand their reasons. You don’t have to let it bother you for one minute — after all, it was not anything you did to make this happen. Put your hurt feelings where they belong — in God’s hands. Then, keep your armor on; you’re going to need it again in the future. Hopefully, the next time, you will be able to deflect any darts that come your way and what was meant for evil, God will be able to make it good.

STILL Before The DAWN by JODY BENNETT REICHEL “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” — Mark 1:35” (NIV) One morning I bolted out of bed, looked at my alarm clock, and it was only 4 a.m. I got back into bed, but I couldn’t sleep. I just lay there restless for hours with many thoughts spinning around in my head. Before I knew it, the sun was up and it was time to wake the kids for school. This lack of sleep went on for weeks! I knew it had to be the Lord waking me up. I grabbed my Bible, pen and journal and went out to the screen porch. God truly had me right where He wanted me, “in that solitary place.” I fell to my knees and started crying out to God. Why 4 a.m.? Wasn’t I spending enough time with Jesus during the day? He knew just what I needed! My heart was burdened with so much: my brother-in-law had throat cancer, my mama was battling terminal illness, all four of our children, ages 14-25, were facing their own intense challenges. There was pain and adversity all around me. After reading some scripture, I started sharing my heart with the Lord. The more I prayed, the more the Holy Spirit kept pouring Himself over me and giving me His words of comfort. After filling many tear-stained pages in my journal, I soon realized the sun had come up and God had soothed my troubled soul. This time my writing to God was different. My words were in a rhyming prose. 38

I knew this was from the Lord, as I don’t write this way. I showed my husband, Rob, and he too was amazed. This dreaded 4 a.m. wake up call soon became my sweet, anointed date with Jesus. The journals started filling up with not only poetic words of comfort for me, but for many others God put on my heart. Through scripture and prayer the Lord began to speak to me, not only in the wee hours but also on my beach walks, bike rides, anywhere, anytime. I started sharing my poems with those for whom I was praying. I prayed that the words He had given me could bless a wider audience. Amazingly, my poems were soon published with Dear Cards, a Christian greeting card company, my lyrics were sung by a Christian recording artist, and my framed writings were sold in stores. Many years have passed since that first early porch time with my Lord, but it is still my place of communion with Him. As I have continued to seek God’s purpose for my poems, He led me to compile my writings into my new book Still Before The Dawn to help bring encouragement and hope to the soul. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” — II Corinthians 1:3,4 (NIV)

RELAX & have FAITH SO I AM LIVING MY LIFE, which is for the most part pretty orderly. A place for everything and everybody. Nice and neat. Then I get a call that a key player on my team is leaving. Immediately I panic. The stress sirens come on in my head. My temperature rises. My brain starts playing one scenario after another each ending in total explosion due to the loss of my team member. A cloud of worry consumes my thoughts. Then another call comes in and a family member is going to move in with us at the end of the month due to illness. My kids are having trouble in school socially and academically, and then there’s the cat who will not eat and is loosing weight so fast I am sure he will pass before Christmas. Then I look in the mirror and oh great, another gray hair. My life is a shambles. I am doomed. Where is my faith? Hebrews 10:23 — Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; So when stress comes my way I should not waver in my faith because Gods faithfulness to me does not waver. So instead of worrying I should give it to God. Hebrews 11:1 — Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. So I know, as a believer, God is in control of all circumstances. He loves me and wants the best for me. He does not want to harm me. It takes me a little time right now to deflect the negative darts the world throws at me. I am getting better and my prayer is that my faith continues to grow so much that I will not feel the stress of life anymore. Romans 8:28 — And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Serenity

NOW

SO, I GOT UP ON THE WRONG SIDE of the bed this morning. My weekend had been laced with drama. Nothing incredibly earth shaking but enough to nag at me a bit. I prayed it away Sunday during church but Monday morning it was waiting for me right where I left it. As I got ready for work it was whispering in my ear. As I drove to work it got louder. By the time I got to work it was in my face yelling at me so loud that I got a headache. I sat at my desk and stared at my computer and prayed for God to take this worry from me. I prayed that the drama would be gone. I took a deep sigh of relief as I cut my computer on. At that moment a co-worker passed by and, hearing me sigh said, “I know how you feel!” I had given moments like these too much time in my life. It was time for me to take a stand against things that were out of my control. This is an excerpt from a prayer that I learned as a child but somehow had forgotten as an adult: Serenity Prayer — Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. A new day began for me after that prayer. The weight of my dramatic weekend was lifted and never returned.

Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. — Psalm 32:11

God made each day new. He makes me new, too. My sins and failures of yesterday are cast away. When others try to entrap me, when Satan tries to distract me, when my mind says I’ll fail. Upward I’ll sail with God as my guide, his word will prevail. My protector and shield, my will I do yield to prosper in you till my day is through.

You don’t have to go it ALONE A FEW YEARS AGO I made some bad choices in my life that made my life rotten. I didn’t realize it at first, but when I could see things clearly I was convicted of my wrongdoing and quickly set out to change it. I tried on my own but quickly fell back into the mud pit. After some time of doing this, I realized I needed help. I had been brought up in the church and knew I needed the Lord to guide me. I also knew that I needed for him to send me someone that could be his vehicle. He did, and after some time passed I felt myself growing stronger and becoming the person I was meant to be. I am not perfect and fail quite often, but when I do, I repent and know that when I ask, I am forgiven. There are times when I am reminded of my old self and I feel rotten again, but now I can see that those thoughts are not from God and I cast them away. I love how my God is a forgiving God. He does not hold a grudge. He does not remind me of my failures to make me feel bad. He wants me to forgive myself and others the same way he forgives me — unconditionally. 40

Harnessing the power of essential oils by HEIDI BECK God has given me the spiritual gift, as with most nurses, of encouragement and a servant’s heart. He called me to be a nurse more than 15 years ago and I spend my days serving others and empowering women with a natural approach to their health. I love hearing messages and reading emails of how essential oils have truly changed their lives, it just makes my heart happy. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” — 1 Peter 4:10 We as women experience a multitude of emotions, struggles, accomplishments and challenging situations — our seasons of life are constantly changing, just like fall is now upon us, I mean who doesn’t like an 85 degree fall day, right?!? I have learned so much about our body’s ability to take care of itself and what God gives us to deal with these situations. Hormones play a significant role in many of the body’s functions throughout life. We must learn to balance and control them. From young women learning about their bodies, to pregnant ladies growing and nurturing another precious human being, and finally moving to seasoned ladies going through the change of life, including those who have endured serious health issues and ongoing treatments to maintain their health. Life is constantly throwing stressors at a woman’s hormonal balance so it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including diet, dietary Mention this ad with your enrollment and you will receive The Essential Life book, over 400 pages packed full of insight on using essential oils not only for your health but for cooking, gardening and on your pets.

supplementation and exercise as a foundation in achieving this balance. I have introduced d TERRA to many women, finding a natural approach together to use for a wide variety of physiological and psychological symptoms. Improving quality of life through alleviating these symptoms is our goal and while not everyone responds the same to specific oils, the joy is in finding a solution that works for the individual. Pregnancy is perhaps the most beautiful time of a women’s life but it is certainly not without its struggles; these babies do amazing things to our bodies! There are many essential oils that are safe throughout pregnancy: • Upset stomach — Digestzen, Lavender and Peppermint do wonders, many physicians are even providing Digestzen capsules to their patients to ease their stomachs • Venous discomfort — Sandalwood, Aromatouch and Helichrysum applied topically • Difficulty sleeping — Vetiver, Serenity and Lavender applied topically or diffused Women of all ages can benefit from a few oils from the beginning of menses through post-menopausal age. Clary Calm, the monthly blend for women — aka the one oil husbands should be allowed to chase their wife around with and not fear for their life blend — provides a soothing and calming effect during a woman’s menstrual cycle to both the body and our heightened emotions.

Our emotions are extremely powerful but equally as powerful is our response to aromatherapy, I’m sure we can all relate to having an aroma that instantly takes us back to a place of comfort. Essential oils have a profound biological effect on our bodies and with the correct combination we can truly begin to experience the comfort and relief that God intended from the gifts of the earth.

Making It

PINK

PART II

by CAROL LINNEMAN

NANCY AND I TALKED, AND MEG’S LIFE CHANGED. With Nancy’s encouragement, Meg’s family and friends began to understand and readily added pink to Meg’s life. Pink-iced cupcakes entered room thirty-two, as did pink linens, flowers, jewelry, and countless other pink accessories. The appreciation Meg showed for each gift and kindness was remarkable. “Thank you” and “I love it” were part of her vocabulary as was “I love you.” Additionally, when she sensed someone else would enjoy something of hers, she readily would give it away. The crafting of a “pink world” became a goal — to design Meg’s days to incorporate meaningful experiences. Her visitors shared in activities, resulting in the same joy as pink. In a short time, all positive events in Meg’s life were dubbed “PINK!” Sam personified that pink. During visits, he would hop up on Meg’s bed. “Shhh, don’t tell on him,” I would say while Meg giggled as he licked her face. Sam was a big, grey, beautiful, irresistible, graceful weimaraner, commanding love. Chocolate milkshakes and almost anything chocolate existed as pink. So did cake and macaroni and cheese. Parties were pink, as were dressing up for them. One drizzly, warm day Meg was sitting in her wheelchair watching the rain through the window. While I observed, an idea formed. “Let’s go outside.” Meg excitedly banged on her wheelchair to convey approval. A co-worker frowned. “She’ll get soaked. You’ll have to change her clothes and wipe down the wheelchair.” Did I care? Not in the least. “When was the last time you think she felt rain on her face?” Well, Meg frolicked in the rain that day, looking upward so raindrops could fall on her cheeks. While being wheeled in circles, she laughed and amazingly began to sing Singing in the Rain, despite having been virtually non-verbal the past week. A pink happening?! On better days, Meg visited and cavorted from her wheelchair with Bently, a friend’s horse. After outings with Bently, who bowed to Meg, she would imitate his bowing by stretching her arms almost to the floor from a sitting position. The beloved “clown” in her brought everyone joy! Meg’s parents visited EVERY day, carrying in their hearts the pink she needed to flourish. It wasn’t always easy, but creating pink is a decision. A legacy remains. It is possible to understand pink as joy when one looks through the eyes of a beautiful, spirited, young woman, who lived it, and who was the catalyst for birthing a desire in others to learn how to share it. It is not the color, it is the concept — the concept of joy which serves to assuage someone’s pain of loneliness, separation, or just plain boredom. I was asked recently, “How have you handled Meg’s death?” The answer is simple and heartfelt: “By joining local islanders visiting care facilities in her honor, making PINK the order for the day!”

Understanding

FAITHFULNESS

GOD PERSONIFIES FAITHFULNESS. His word is true forever. His love is forever. There isn’t anything we can do to keep us from his love. As children of God, our faithfulness journey is to start with being faithful to God. When we are faithful to God in all things in our heart and mind, the rest of our life is set in order. So the definition of faithfulness is God’s faithfulness to us and our faithfulness to Him. As we study the scriptures about faithfulness it is important to realize that God is our example for daily living. He is our role model and mentor for life. Yes, he is perfect in all ways. His standard is perfection. His example for us is achievable only through his son. He understood this a long time ago when he sent his son to save us from our sins. He also sent us a helper to guide us along our path. So when our journey in life gets difficult, we should not get discouraged. We should stay on our faithful path, because we have an understanding God who loves us very very much.

WONDERFUL October OCTOBER IS A WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR. It marks the beginning of a new season. When I think of October, I think of cleaning places in my house that I haven’t cleaned since last October. I look through recipes for exciting fall meals and desserts to prepare for my family. I begin to shop for special holiday gifts. I begin to plan for parties, family gatherings and church activities. In short, October is a month of anticipation and action. The promises that October brings are both wonderful and exciting. It is comforting to know that God is always faithful to His promises. Many years ago, people did not live the way we do now. They were in pain. They were enslaved. They were filled with sorrow and were in deep need of a savior. They cried out for a king, a redeemer. They wanted a warrior to fight their battles. They wanted to be free from their pain and sorrow. 46

LADYLOWCOUNTRY.COM

October 2016

They knew God heard their prayers. They knew God would answer their prayers. It was foretold in the Old Testament how it would happen. They just did not know when. So they waited. They watched. They listened. They waited with the same faith we have that our seasons will change and our holidays will come. Instead of waiting in anguish, as believers we wait with joy because we have already received His gift, Our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus. But some have not seen Him yet, and are still enslaved by sorrow. So as we enjoy our beautiful October, let us remember to be available to speak the truth with love in our heart when we are called to do so. This gift we have is meant to share. So when the wind blows this October, and when you see a leaf fall, say a prayer that joy and peace will spread throughout the Lowcountry this fall.

Relationships

by CAROLINE O’NEAL HTCCS Student “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” — Matthew 28:19-20 THESE VERSES SPOKEN BY JESUS are commonly referred to as the Great Commission. He commands Christians to go out into the world and share the Gospel. On September 17, eight students from Holy Trinity Classical Christian School, myself included, were blessed to meet some of the people who have dedicated their lives to fulfilling this commission. Twelve Christian leaders from the Anglican Leadership Institute were in Beaufort to see our city and learn more about Holy Trinity. These extraordinary people hailed from around the world and lead their own churches in locations such as Ghana, Asia, Brazil, Australia and Nigeria. They represented six continents including North America. When our guests arrived from Charleston, we met in the Parish Church of Saint Helena and had a brief worship service. We had a homily and sang songs both in English and in Swahili. During one song, the various clergy sang the phrase “My Lord is good, He is good to me” in their native languages while the rest of us echoed. It was astounding to hear how many languages were known within that one room. After the worship service, we students from Holy Trinity began our presentations.

Mary Clanton Bozard, Morgan Chumney and I recited an excerpt from the poem “Horatius at the Bridge.” Sarah and Sydney Lawrence played a duet for piano and violin by Vivaldi. Ruben Peña, Parker Smith, Elizabeth O’Neal and I read our testimonies for what having a classical, Christian education at Holy Trinity has meant to us. Then the headmaster, Reverend Lawrence, delivered his address about the school. After concluding at the church, we all walked to Bay Street to enjoy some frozen yogurt at YoYo’s. We spoke with our visitors about their countries and they asked us more about Holy Trinity and our plans for the future. I spoke with the Rev.
