Letter from the Head Mistress

It never fails to lift my heart when I see our pupils’ enthusiasm and zest to contribute to the greater good. It is so inspiring to see what they can achieve when they commit to something they care about.

At LEH we have a long tradition of working with and supporting others in our surrounding community and in wider society. This philanthropic ethos has been demonstrated from our founding as a charity school for girls in 1710 and is evidenced throughout the school and in our many links with charities, partner schools, organisations and good causes, locally, nationally and internationally.

For anyone involved in education, ensuring children have the best possible opportunities to learn, feel inspired and experience new things that spark their curiosity, is at the heart of what we do.

With pandemic restrictions lifted, our pupils and staff relished the opportunity to restart our community programmes once again in 2021/22. They enthusiastically took part in shared learning and volunteer initiatives in support of the local community and gave their time and skills in a variety of creative ways – from helping children with their reading at local primary schools and supporting the girls participating in our SHINE enrichment programme, to working alongside other schools as part of the Feltham College Partnership.

I’m pleased to welcome you to this annual update of the school’s fundraising and public benefit activities for this past academic year.
-1-

The caring nature and activism of our pupils could be seen in many ways: our Service Volunteers engaging with and helping people in the local community and pupils volunteering as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. They also came up with inventive ways of raising money for causes they feel passionately about, including the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Alongside several pupil-initiated fundraising events, our ambition to grow the LEH Bursary Fund to widen access to the school remained a top priority. Thanks to the kindness and generosity of our school community, we are helping more pupils than ever before to take up their places at LEH.

My own experience of an excellent, free education at a Grammar school in Belfast drives my passion for our Bursary Fund and the belief that we can and should strive to help others who would otherwise be unable to come to LEH. I have been proud to see many girls benefit from the experiences and opportunities unlocked thanks to an LEH bursary and to watch them flourish into remarkable young people.

The impact of this on individuals is great, but so too is the richness that greater diversity brings to our school. It is a reminder that what makes us different and unique is what makes us special.

I’m delighted by the plans we have for building on our fundraising and public benefit activities in the year ahead and know I will once again be amazed by the kindness, creativity, and generosity shown by our pupils and the entire LEH community.

Thanks to You 2021-2022 -2-

Letter from the Development Director

It is with great pride that we share the highlights of our philanthropic activities during the last academic year with you. What unifies all of these things –whether it’s the collective energy and effort from across our community of pupils, parents, staff and alumnae in support of our Annual Giving Day, or the countless ways our pupils and teachers give their time, encouragement and enthusiasm in their work with other local schools – is a culture of kindness and an intrinsic sense of wanting to help others that runs throughout LEH.

As I sit down to write this, I am joyfully interrupted by a pupil who has come in to ask for help with a poster for a school fundraising event they are organising. Moments before, I’d received a copy of the LEH values developed by the School Council – made up of pupils from across the Senior School under the leadership of the Head Girl Team.

These pupil-led values speak of the importance of things like fostering an ‘inclusive, eco-friendly and socially responsible society’ and holding each other to ‘the highest standards of compassion and integrity’. In the space of five minutes I’ve been reminded, that even in the context of challenging external times, there is much to feel hopeful about. That the pupils at LEH provide a whole-hearted dollop of optimism for the future. It’s a privilege to be in their company and to feel inspired by them each day.

The principles we have at LEH are shared by our wider community, including our teachers and staff – who never fail to amaze with their tireless commitment to supporting pupils and creating an environment where such values can be so easily lived out – and our incredible parents and alumnae, who reinforce and extend the reach of these far and wide.

Kindness may not be something you can touch, but it’s certainly something you can feel, and it is experienced in abundance at LEH.
-3-

Alongside our wider public benefit work and fundraising in support of many local and national charities, the LEH community in its broadest sense continues to help us provide life-changing bursaries to many pupils each year.

It has been a pleasure to meet with some of our donors this year and to hear about their passion and motivations for supporting the LEH Bursary Fund. Thanks to Mrs Hanbury’s commitment to making LEH more accessible to pupils from different backgrounds and the support and generosity with which this continues to be met across our parents, alumnae and staff, we have made great progress in growing the number of pupils we support. Around 10% of pupils at LEH receive some form of meanstested financial support to attend our school.

We send our sincere thanks to every single person for your donations and the many acts of kindness you have shown this year. We hope you enjoy reading about the impact you have helped make possible. In the year ahead we look forward to launching new appeals to bring us closer to our goal of providing 100 bursaries by 2025, and to working with and alongside our wonderful LEH community to achieve this.

Thanks to You 2021-2022 -4-

LEH is for life, not just for Christmas

A festive opportunity to transform a young person’s life

Over 12 week days leading up to the Christmas holidays, we combined some fun and fundraising for LEH’s 12 Days of Giving. From a Barney, our school dog, in a fir tree, to 12 Nutty Senior Management Team (SMT) Crackers, we were delighted with the enthusiasm with which staff and pupils took part in our festive photo shoots.

Our entire LEH community shared in the excitement receiving daily emails with jolly pictures, seasonal jokes or facts and brain-busting competitions. Alongside this we ran our annual festive pets competition, which included a top prize of a kindly donated family photo shoot and featured carols from our delightful LEH singers.

As always, the main message of our 12 Days of Giving campaign centred on the importance of our Bursary Fund. We included a request to join our 1710 Society of Regular Givers, alongside opportunities to make one off contributions and were very grateful to receive donations from parents, alumnae and staff.

Annual Giving Day returned to LEH from the 16th-17th June, raising over £50,000 for the Bursary Fund across 1710 minutes.

Excitement built on the day both at school and at home with a repeat of last year’s popular funfair, where pupils took part in fun games from hook a duck and spin the wheel, to crazy golf and test your strength, alongside some newly established challenges to unlock generous donations.

Students in the Senior School completed a ‘tough mudder’ style obstacle course with everything from hurdles to scoring penalties, constructed an effective working optical software system to clearly resolve the number 1710, and baked 171 cupcakes in 17:10 minutes. Meanwhile, the entire Junior School worked together to reach their goal of reading 1710 pages of their books in 30 minutes. Members of staff, including Mrs Hanbury, showed their support by learning and performing a 1950s style Bunny Hop dance in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

-7-

Our very successful auction of promises returned, including in demand prizes from staff, alumnae and parents – from the chance to be Junior School Head for the day, to a bespoke composition by Mr Ashe, performed by Cantata. Other popular prizes included delicious homemade treats, guided tours and coaching sessions, beauty products and beautiful paintings.

Making donations wasn’t the only way that our community got into the spirit of Giving Day. In addition to carrying out acts of kindness, many volunteered as Ambassadors to spread the word about Giving Day within their own networks. If you’re interested in becoming an Ambassador for Giving Day 2023, please contact us on development@lehs.org.uk.

We were thrilled with the enthusiastic participation by so many and are very grateful for the support we received in such a wide variety of ways – showing, once again, what a truly special community we have here at LEH.

Heather Hanbury’s Bursary Fund Legacy

For nine years Mrs Hanbury has worked tirelessly to develop and grow the LEH Bursary Fund and among the many wonderful marks she will leave on the school when she retires later this year, a thriving programme of support for those who need it, is one of her most cherished.

Widening access to the School has been one of her top priorities since joining LEH and this passion remains today, which is why one of the last big events she will host as Head Mistress, will be our second ever Great Big Bursary Ball. Since 2014, we have increased the number of bursary recipients here by almost 60% but there are still so many deserving students we are unable to help. We hope that you will join us on the night or make a donation to her lasting legacy.

Public Benefit Provision

Through our Public Benefit activities, we endeavour to foster the aims of our founder by engaging with local, national and international bodies, building strong relations with the local community and encouraging pupils to contribute positively, willingly and with altruism, for the greater good.

Community Outreach

Our Deputy Head (Pastoral) continued as a Governor on the Board of Reach Academy, Feltham, attending meetings remotely. At a curriculum level, LEH continued to support the development of A Level Physics and Psychology teaching at Reach through staff support and advice.

L4 toured a Theatre in Education production of ‘Cindy’ to local primary schools, alongside creating an associated resource pack.

Our links with Hampton High continued throughout the year and we were able to support GCSE music provision with both teaching and learning resource input. Hampton High pupils also attend the Combined Cadet Force programme at LEH.

This year, a series of evening online “Wellbeing Wednesday” parent talks on a variety of PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) topics were organised by LEH and advertised to our local schools. These were very well attended by parents in the area.

We also gave free use of our swimming pool to the Sea Cadets and offered free weekly access to a number of local state schools.

-13-

LEH supports the Independent Schools Council (ISC) Schools Together initiative. Projects have included:

• LEH student volunteers helping with reading at local primary schools.

• Sixth form students offering Maths tuition online in the evening through the Easy A app.

• Arranging joint school trips with local special needs primary schools.

• The Careers Department inviting neighbouring state schools to attend our annual Higher Education Fair.

• Hosting Languages Days and Drama Days with local schools.

• Hosting a Mathematics Outreach Day for local state primary schools.

SHINE

LEH’s SHINE enrichment programme, ‘Serious Fun on Saturdays’, gives LEH teachers and pupils the chance to work with girls from local primary schools to help instil a love of learning through fun activities outside the National Curriculum. We were delighted to re-start the programme in 2021/22 after a year-long pause due to Covid restrictions.

This year, we were thrilled to welcome 39 girls in Year 5 from 14 local primary schools who were encouraged and supported by LEH teachers and 11 Sixth Form mentors. Running on Saturday mornings over 12 weeks, SHINE culminated in a special graduation ceremony where parents were invited in to see the activities the pupils had been enjoying. This year’s exciting programme included topics such as debating and public speaking, women in politics and how women won the vote in the UK, human cell biology and extracting DNA, developing conversation in French and German, probability and magic numbers, and creating happiness jars.

Studies have shown that similar projects at other schools have helped to raise attainment across the board for the pupils attending, in addition to providing a brilliant opportunity for participants to get to know other pupils of a similar age and with similar interests from different schools.

Thanks to You 2021-2022 -14-

Feltham College Partnership

LEH is working with Reach Academy and Hampton School as joint partners behind a ground-breaking new Sixth Form college in Feltham, which aims to broaden choices for local young people and offer transformative opportunities.

Feltham College is located in an area of high deprivation where currently only 20% of young people move on to university or degree apprenticeship courses and the recognised advantages these bring. This is less than half the national average, with the latest government data showing that, nationally, 44% of 19-year-olds in the state sector progress to Higher Education.

Situated in the town centre, the campus is affiliated with Reach Academy, already a renowned local education provider. In addition to classrooms and laboratories, facilities include a restaurant and café, music rehearsal rooms and production studios, allowing pupils on vocational courses to gain real-life work experience.

Feltham College’s academic courses are supported by LEH and Hampton – building on the relationship of trust that has developed at all levels over the past nine years, and ensuring that across the board, academic courses are highly effective and set pupils up for success.

Feltham College officially opened its doors in September 2022.

-15-

The long-standing, successful partnership with Hampton and LEH has already benefited many of our pupils helping all of our recent cohort secure places on university courses and apprenticeships of their choice. Coming together to establish Feltham College has enabled our partnership to grow and flourish resulting in more local young people being able to achieve their ambitions and enjoy lives of choice and opportunity.

Feltham College Sixth Form Partnership is an excellent example of what can be achieved when the state and independent education sectors come together. All educationalists are united in their passion to help young people thrive and succeed and this is the very essence of what Feltham College is all about – uniting resources and expertise to support young people who deserve every opportunity to fulfil their hopes and ambitions.

Charity and Raising Awareness

Helping others less fortunate than yourself is a much-cherished principle at LEH. Pupils have been raising money for charity ever since the school was first founded in 1710 and today’s students are no less enthusiastic. This year pupils raised more than £10,000 for a variety of good causes.

Every year the Junior and Senior schools each elect a charity to become the main recipient of fundraising efforts for the year. However, this isn’t the only focus for charitable work and pupils volunteer in a wide variety of other capacities. In addition to the amounts raised for Against Violence and Abuse, and Guide Dogs:

• Over £2,500 was raised for various other charities, including Macmillan Cancer Support, as part of coffee mornings and Mufti Days.

• This also included money raised to help those affected by the crisis in Ukraine and a sizeable donation of clothing and other items was also collected for refugees.

• Pupils engaged in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme volunteered at local charity shops and libraries, picked up litter and helped with park runs.

• LEH alumnae also took part in a variety of exciting fundraising endeavours, including almost 90 year old Sheila Hallas, MBE. Sheila wing-walked for her charity, the Combined Charities Christmas Card Shops, which was founded in 1971 and has since raised over £5.5m for good causes. LEH Alumna and Senior Rowing Coach, Abby Johnston, and Charlotte Irving, Class of 2008, along with friend Kat Cordiner, became the fastest female trio ever to row across the Atlantic while also raising £100,000 for three cancer charities.

The student-led EcoSquad continued their work reducing the use of plastic and paper in school and our catering team now measure and report monthly on the amount of food waste at LEH. During 2021-22, we continued to develop a more detailed long-term sustainability strategy centred on reducing our carbon footprint and environmental impact more generally. The initial focus is to prepare a de-carbonisation strategy that will enable LEH to reduce over time its reliance on fossil fuels and to install additional solar panels to maximise the use of solar energy on site.

In addition to all of these wonderful acts of service, students, staff, parents and alumnae participated in countless other individual charitable activities from sponsored marathons and hikes to cake sales and fairs.

Our Hopes for the Future

Philanthropy is one of the founding principles of LEH

LEH was set up more than 300 years ago as a charity school with the aim of providing a good education to those who would otherwise be unable to afford it. We are proud to continue this belief in giving and inclusion. Our goal is to continue this tradition and build on it by growing our Bursary Programme further.

Our goal is to be able to offer 100 bursaries by 2025 and we have made good progress but there are still many deserving applicants we are not able to support. We are working hard to encourage parents, alumnae and friends of LEH to help us support as many pupils as possible.

I was incredibly fortunate that LEH offered me both a scholarship and a bursary for the Sixth Form. It meant my mum and dad could put all their energy on supporting both me and my twin brother through Sixth Form without financial worries. It was a true game-changer for my family, and I feel very fortunate to have benefited from the bursary scheme.

The Bursary Fund

It is the generosity of our past, present, and future donors that allows our school to thrive. Through our Bursary Fund we are committed to providing the life-changing opportunity of an LEH education to talented and deserving pupils who otherwise would not be able to study here.

73 students hold bursaries in 2022

13 new bursary pupils joined in 2022

130 bursary applications for 2023

Currently, LEH spends over £1.4m each year on bursarial support. All donations to the Bursary Fund are ring-fenced and cannot be used for any purpose other than the support of our bursary pupils.

We offer means-tested support to10% of pupils in the Senior School, so we need to raise funds continually to cover the cost of their places. In addition to this, the demand for transformational bursaries is greater than ever and we hope to continue to grow our Bursary Programme and increase this number further in the coming years.

Widening access to our remarkable school ensures that all students, regardless of their financial background, have access to a high-quality education and the opportunities that come with it. It also fosters a supportive and inclusive environment, where students can learn from each other and grow together.

The 1710 Society relaunched in March 2020, and following successful appeals throughout this academic year, we now have almost 80 members making a regular gift to the Bursary Fund. We have also received one-off donations totalling more than £20,000 since the launch.

Unlike many other charitable institutions, LEH does not have any major endowed funds to call upon. We rely on the generosity of our community to support our vision to transform young people’s lives, as the demand for financial assistance becomes greater each year.

Past recipients have followed a wide variety of interesting career paths including teaching, medicine, property development and non-profit management. They are all united in their dedication to passing on the benefits of the LEH education they received.

Please consider joining the 1710 Society by visiting www.lehs.org.uk/1710society. With your help, LEH will continue to transform lives, communities and the wider world.

LEH provided me with copious opportunities to develop self-confidence, an excellent work ethic and good people skills. The atmosphere at school was dynamic and challenging - it was an outstanding environment in which to learn.

The teaching I received at the school was outstanding without exception and I was inspired to apply to read English Language and Literature at Oxford by my wonderful teachers in that subject. I will be forever grateful to them that I studied this subject at Oxford before eventually turning to the Law!

After my under-graduate degree, I took a year off from the world of academics, interning for one half of the year in a boutique strategy and communications consultancy firm before returning to work in the LEH Sports Department for the other half of the year. Working at LEH allowed me to experience first-hand the consistent hard-work and passion that teaching staff channel into their vocation, which further strengthened my conviction that LEH really is a unique school.

I have more recently made the irresistible decision to follow in my parents’ footsteps and completed the Graduate Diploma in Law in 2018 followed by the Bar Vocational Training Course in 2019. I commenced pupillage this year and hope to establish a practice as a barrister in the areas of public and commercial law.

I have worked hard to secure scholarships and funding for my legal education so farboth from City, University of London and the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple - and I am certain that my education at LEH has given me confidence in my abilities to achieve my goals.

Knowing that I was supported through the Bursary Fund allowed me to focus unselfconsciously on my academic and extra-curricular interests without worrying about finances.

A Gift to LEH Continues Your Legacy

There are many ways to leave your mark on the world. You can build companies, lead projects or mentor teams. You can raise children, write a book or cultivate a garden.

Perhaps you have done some of these, or all of these, or more. Would you also consider leaving a gift to LEH in your will?

A gift to LEH could fund a life-changing bursary for a talented pupil. You could be part of a new building project, enabling us to enhance the exceptional facilities that we offer.

It’s never too early to start thinking about what you could leave behind. Now could be the perfect time to create your legacy.

The Miles Bursary

Diana Manning Miles has been a kind supporter of the School for many years, creating and funding the ‘Diana Prize’, which is awarded to the winner of The Readathon Competition.

Sadly, Diana passed away in November 2021, leaving behind her cousins and many friends. Through her legacy, Diana has created the Miles Bursary, to support a new Sixth Form student every year. We are incredibly grateful for her commitment to providing opportunities and widening access to LEH and for her generous legacy gift, which will benefit many LEH pupils in the coming years.

Sketch of Diana, 16 September 1962 -25-

I was awarded a scholarship which greatly assisted my parents in enabling me to stay at the school when my father ran into financial difficulties and I am delighted to now be able to contribute towards enabling other pupils to have access to such a wonderful education which will stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.

We were very grateful to receive two other very generous legacy gifts this year. The first from former staff member, Mollie Newman, who taught RE and Catechism in the Junior School and was married to LEH’s first Bursar, Wing-Commander Kenneth Newman. The second from an alumna, Sheila Leach, Class of 1949, who was always a huge supporter of the Holly Club and a number of other charities including Teddington Memorial Hospital and those caring for animals.

Legacy giving allows us to plan for the long-term future of the school and continue to offer the very finest education to future generations.

You can donate fixed amounts, what’s left after other gifts have been given out, or a specific item. As we are a registered charity, a legacy gift is free of inheritance tax. Your donation will either be taken off the value of your estate before inheritance tax is calculated, or if 10% or more of your estate is left to a registered charity your inheritance tax rate will be reduced (from 40% to 36%).

The Friends of LEH

The Friends of LEH, the school’s parent association, celebrated its Diamond anniversary in 2020, marking more than 60 years of fundraising and social activities.

In that time they have contributed to a huge range of activities around the school. From funding new lighting and sound systems to supplying sophisticated drones for the Airgineers Club, right up to helping out with major capital investments like the refurbishment of the Junior School laboratory and the completion of the Gateway building project.

The second-hand uniform sale profits go to the school libraries to support author talks, workshops, and furnishings to make the library experience more enjoyable.

The fabulous events each year typically include welcome evenings, quiz and comedy nights, discos and the biggest annual fund raiser of the year, the Christmas Bazaar.

-27-

How to Get Involved

The Friends is run by a Council, a group of up to 24 members, including 19 parent volunteers as well as school representatives, who meet termly to discuss ideas and projects as well as to plan events.

The Council is extremely fortunate to be assisted by a network of class reps from each year group who support and promote events. In addition, by engaging with their fellow parents through informal get-togethers, including coffee mornings, evenings out and end-of-term parties, class reps strengthen our sense of community.

There are many ways to be involved: sharing ideas, attending events, becoming a class rep or joining the Council – any and all participation is welcomed. The ongoing success of The Friends is wholly dependent on the enthusiasm and generosity of every LEH family and, for this, we are enormously grateful.

Visit www.lehs.org.uk/support-us/the-friends-of-leh to find out more.

Careers and Mentoring

The Careers Department is open to all students, and staff offer a wide range of support. Events include the Higher Education Fair, Specialist Careers Event and Careers Evening, as well as more specialised talks on subjects ranging from American Universities to Women in Engineering. There are many ways to volunteer your time and help students and alumnae looking for support or advice.

The Careers Advisory Group

The Careers Advisory Group meets termly and is made up of parents and alumnae who have volunteered to share their skills to advise and mentor our students. If you would like to join the group, or for more information on what group membership involves, please contact careers@lehs.org.uk.

Mentoring

Our Holles Connect website for alumnae offers excellent networking opportunities and we encourage past pupils and current parents to take advantage of these. You can offer to be a professional mentor to someone taking their first steps in the world of work or maybe to someone looking to change careers. And there’s a jobs board where you can let LEH alumnae looking for work be among the first to know about an exciting vacancy at your company.

We believe our mentor network is an invaluable asset for the school community and your involvement could be anything from offering an internship, to reading through a CV or giving interview practice.

The level of commitment is totally dependent on the time you are able to give. If you’re interested in signing up, please visit www.hollesconnect.org.uk, or email alumnae@lehs.org.uk to find out more.

-29-

Investing in STEM

There are numerous competitions for students of all ages to participate in, both within and across departments. These include the UK Maths Trust challenges, British Science Olympiads, Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge and the Airgineers Micro Drone Challenge. In addition, each department runs its own weekly clubs and subject clinics.

There are also many organised trips and opportunities within the school year to focus on particular areas, such as the annual Goswell Science Lecture, funded by a generous donation from The Goswell Family. This year it was given by Alumna, Melanie Ivarsson, who is Chief Development Officer at Moderna and was awarded an OBE for services to public health during COVID-19 in the New Years Honours list.

WELL Logistics STEM Scholarship

The recipient is someone who demonstrates their passion for one or more STEM subjects and intends to pursue further study and possibly a career path in a STEM related area. The STEM Scholars have inspired both students and staff with their energy, enthusiasm, commitment and passion. They have entered (and won) national and international competitions, attended conferences and created beautiful works of art. Worldwide Energy Logistics Ltd (WELL)’s kindness in enabling us to offer our students such a wonderful opportunity is much appreciated.

Corporate Sponsorship

There are many opportunities to sponsor specific scholarships or projects. If you are interested in discussing naming opportunities, please contact the development team at development@lehs.org.uk

At LEH we inspire the next generation of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) by providing our students with a wide range of exciting opportunities.

Donors in Gold and Platinum levels will additionally feature on a Benefactors’ board in the school Atrium and will be invited to special events, including an annual Benefactors’ reception hosted by the Head Mistress.

We are committed to growing our Bursary Programme and rely on the generosity of our supporters to achieve this, contact development@lehs.org.uk to find out more.

The Lady Eleanor Society

The Lady Eleanor Society was formed to recognise and thank those who have made arrangements to leave a gift to the school in their will. Members receive special communications and are invited to key events as guests of the Head Mistress with a dedicated reception.

The 1710 Society

Members of the 1710 Society receive a special lapel pin on joining and will feature on a dedicated members board in the school Atrium. In addition, they receive invitations to special events, including receptions for selected music and drama productions.

Unless details are already provided, we will always discuss preferences for recognition before publishing anything and donors are very welcome to remain anonymous.
