Improving the Member Experience Monica McIntosh PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
It’s hard to believe that we are already half-way through the season. It’s at this time that the Board has its midseason review. On July 21, each Chair or Board Liaison of the Board’s Standing Committees (Course and Grounds, Engagement, Finance, Golf, Governance, Marketing and Sales Advisory) reported their progress against their workplans and the Board’s Directives for their Committee. As well, Chairs commented on any gaps or new initiatives that are being pursued. Everyone is on track at this stage. One of the Directives to all Committees this year was to come up with ideas on how we could further improve on the Member experience. They did not disappoint! Most of these are not “big” ideas, but small things that will hopefully make your experience even better. Suggestions covered many areas, such as increasing range supervision, new activities, exercise classes, and family events, among other ideas. The lists are being filtered for what might be viable, and what we could implement this year. Some of the ideas were about themes for new social and golf events. For example, some of the lists included a fun event from the purple tees. But before we moved along to the filtering stage, Jan Flott brought the idea to the Golf Committee, and planning started right away. You’ll be hearing more about the upcoming “Purple Hat” shotgun planned for September. In addition to new ideas, some suggested increasing awareness of existing services. For example, did you know that the Golf Shop can be used to help find playing partners? Are you looking to meet some more people but are concerned about putting your name on the tee sheet with people you don’t know? Call the Golf Shop and they can help guide you. Do you have an idea to improve your experience or that of other Members? Please send a note through the online suggestion form under the Member Home tab on the Member website.

Committee and Board participation for 2019 We are starting the process for identifying potential candidates for adding to our Standing Committees and the Board for next year. The Nominating Committee is Chaired by Alanna Quinn, Past President. Committee Members include Betty Chee (Vice President), Eiko Aki, Jan Flott and Carol Heller-Mepham. If you are a team-player and have relevant background or skills and are interested in participating on one of the committees or the Board in 2019, or if you know someone else who should be considered, please fill out a nomination form available in the office or contact Alanna if you have any questions. Update on planning activities Thank you to all who had attended the Strategic Planning Member Consultation sessions held in the latter half of July. Your feedback and suggestions have been invaluable. In the coming weeks and months, as we analyse the results of the consultation sessions and continue to fill in the framework for the strategic plan, we hope to return to you with more focussed questions. If you had missed the consultation sessions or have had more thoughts on the themes lease do not hesitate to write in at planning@ladiesgolfclub.com. The Land Sale Net Proceeds Strategy Committee has conducted research of golf clubs and other not-for-profit organizations who have received lump sums, and that research will continue through the summer. We have also started discussion of various scenarios for how the funds can be used to support long-term financial sustainability, as well as criteria that can be used to prioritize potential projects. The Land Sale Course Planning Committee has been busy developing principles upon which to evaluate concepts, ensuring they have the complete list of possible considerations, while also evolving, adding and eliminating possible design concepts. Please see their article for more information. As expected, the Land Project Steering Committee Phase 3 continues to be in the waiting stage of the project until we receive Markham’s formal comments on the application.

We’ve reached the unofficial halfway point of the season and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the staff and the Members for a great first half of the season. This past month started off with a hugely successful DCM PGA Women’s Championship of Canada. That event began with a Pro-Am on July 3 for 128 pros and amateurs. Minutes before the tee-off, the club suffered a power outage that lasted 7.5 hours. That meant while the golfers were out on the golf course, the kitchen and clubhouse staff had to devise a plan to serve those 128 people with no power! Not only were they able to do it, but they did it so well, I’m still receiving compliments from participants on the meal. The two competition days were fantastic with three of our Members competing (Elizabeth Tong, Selena Costabile, and Club Champion Lauren Zaretsky). Our three ladies represented us well and played superb golf both days. Elizabeth took the low honours of the three, finishing at +1 to par over the two days, in a tie for 5th place. Congratulations to all three ladies. As good as the golf was during that event, the highlight for our staff came after the event was over, when Lorie Kane tweeted some photos of our Golf Shop and congratulated us on thinking outside the box by coming up with an inviting and friendly retail space. When a golfer who has been in thousands of golf shops all over the world pays you a compliment like that, it’s hard not to be happy. The players have been continuously sending in rave reviews of the golf course and the staff. Many of the players had never played here before and were gushing over the conditions and the layout. John and his staff have done an incredible job of keeping the course in fantastic shape all year. The event was such as success from the PGA of Canada’s perspective and from their lead sponsor that they have asked us to host the event again in 2024 for our 100th anniversary. I also must thank the Members who volunteered their time to help make the event a success. We had Members who helped with scoring, forecaddies, and even billeting the players in their homes. Without the support of the Members, this event could not have happened, and we truly thank you for that. The end of the month saw another event that turned out to be a huge success despite some challenges. 6 | BEAUTY, GRIT & GRACE
Our second New Member Event of the year occurred on July 24. Paddy led a clinic to start the event for our Unlimited Trial, new 1st year Members, 2nd year Members, Intermediate Members, and their buddies. Everything was going great until the rain hit two holes in. That didn’t stop this event from being a blast. Loryn came prepared and ran a trivia night for all the participants. There was so much fun being had, apologies had to be made to the Members dining that night for all the noise and laughter coming from trivia night. Kudos to Loryn, Paddy, Lisa, Umesh, and the rest of the staff for creating a wonderful evening for our Members. It has been great to see the camaraderie amongst our Unlimited Trial members this year. Everyone seems to be having a great time and I think we have a fantastic group of future Members in that crowd. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and don’t forget to bring out your guests, so they can experience Ladies’ looking so beautiful.

Rain is a good thing! John McLinden GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
The ponds at the back of the course are close to their normal levels again. Did you notice how low they were during the hot, dry spell earlier in July? Why does this happen? The main reservoir or irrigation pond is located by the 12th hole. The two remaining ponds on 10 and 11 act as feeder ponds to the reservoir. We have two wells on the golf course that feed water into the pond on the 10th hole. One well is located near the river on the 16th hole and the other well is on the 9th hole and the water is pumped through the golf course to the pond. Combined, both wells pump 160 gallons/minute of water into the pond on number 10. During periods of high temperatures and dry conditions, like what we have experienced over the last several weeks, the irrigation system is working at full capacity. To
keep the turf alive over the past numerous weeks, the irrigation system was using more water on a nightly basis then was being replenished. This contributed to the low pond levels as they were slowly drawing down on a nightly basis. Some much-needed rain finally arrived in late July and the pond levels began to rise as irrigation to the turf was not required. Although the ponds may appear large, as they gobble up errant shots, they are quite small in terms of storage capacity. We are getting caught up now!

Q: After a rain storm, why is the fairway on the 17th hole always wet with a puddle? A: The fairway on the 17th hole is situated relatively low adjacent to the river. There is actually good drainage running through the fairway but anytime there is a significant rainfall the river levels rise. When these levels rise, the water from the river basically backs up into the drains causing puddling on the fairway. When the river subsides the puddles on the fairway dissipate quickly.

What’s happening in the gardens? Now is the time to sit back and enjoy the fruits of our labour. We are harvesting summer squash and cucumbers and our tomatoes won’t be far behind. We even have our first full hive of honey ready for extraction! The biggest job on our list right now is keeping out all those pesky weeds. In the perennial gardens, it’s also important to cut back all the faded blooms of any perennials that have already had their moment to shine. This gives some space for the next bloomers to show off their bright, beautiful colours! In the gardens now, we are seeing lilies everywhere! There are many varieties of both daylilies and oriental lilies. If you see me around the gardens, be sure to share your favourites!

A Vegetable Bistro recipe Umesh DiWaker EXECUTIVE CHEF
A warm “hello” from the kitchen at Ladies’ to all of our Members! July has been a wonderful month so far and seeing the herb garden in such great shape brings so much delight to all of us. It has been a marvelous process, watching the transition of our small plants become bright, delicious dishes. Each day, our culinary team picks fresh vegetables and herbs to incorporate in your dishes on that same day. This concept of ‘’farm to table’’ is a great step for Ladies’. Our recent feature, shrimp and basil spaghetti, was inspired by our garden. The basil pesto was nut free as we added sunflower seeds in place of pine nuts. This month, you will see fresh zucchini in a lot of our specials. Here is a recipe you can make at home and all you need is, you guessed it - fresh zucchini! Zucchini Carpaccio with fresh mint, parmesan & pomegranate Ingredients: 2 medium zucchinis sliced with mandolin 1/2 lemon juice and zest 4 tsp extra virgin olive oil Sea salt, to taste and fresh black pepper 1 cup baby arugula 1/4 cup shaved parmesan 1 tbsp. sliced toasted almonds A few sprigs of fresh mint Pomegranate pearls Garden flowers to garnish Instructions: 1. Combine oil and lemon juice in a small bowl. Place a layer of zucchini on the bottom of a large plate. Season with salt and pepper and drizzle with oil and lemon juice mixture. 2. Repeat by layering zucchini, salt, pepper, oil and lemon juice mixture until all zucchini is used! Let everything marinate for at least 10 minutes on the plate. 3. Arrange arugula on top, add shaved parmesan and fresh mint leaves. 4. Drizzle the remaining oil and lemon juice mixture to season the arugula. 5. Garnish with fresh flowers, toasted almonds and pomegranate seeds and enjoy this delightful summer salad!

Golf Academy Clinics on the Course
Remember to sign up for the Ladies’ Club Championship, to be held Friday August 25 to Sunday August 27. Friday is for the Championship Flight only. There are competitions from both the Yellow and Red tees and you may choose to join the Stroke play or Stableford competition. If you elect to play in the Stableford competition, please choose “Stableford” as an option as well as the day or days you would like to play. Remember that to be eligible to win prizes, you must have posted 75% of your eligible scores.
The Academy attempts to schedule clinics to have little or no impact on regular Member play. However, there are times when conflicts may occur. In order to keep things running as smoothly as possible: • Clinic schedules are posted on the website. Just find the “Quick Links” section on the left side of our home page and click on “Golf Academy Schedule 2018.” The full monthly on-course schedule will be included in the Just Golf e-blast. This should make it easier for Members to plan their tee times. • A sign will be posted at the first tee to notify Members of a clinic on the course. • Paddy and the Golf Shop staff will be happy to help you with an alternate route on the course, if needed. • Transportation options will be provided if you are unable to use the A-holes to play 9 holes. o If you prefer to walk out, but not back, the Golf Shop Staff will shuttle you back from Hole 9; o If you want to walk 6 holes and then take a cart into the valley, a power cart will be provided after Hole 6; o And if you don’t want to walk at all, a power cart will be provided at the first tee.
The Club Championship offers something for everyone and is always a fun weekend of golf and camaraderie! Should you decide not to play, plan to come out and cheer on your friends while enjoying a beverage on the lawn! New Date for Nora Stott Tournament The Nora Stott tournament is now scheduled for Saturday, August 11. For those of you who were unable to play on the original date, the weather has given you another chance! Tee times begin at 8:30 and play is from both Red and Yellow Tees, depending on your handicap factor. Sign up online or call the Golf Shop. To compete, you must be over 50 years of age. To win, you must have posted 75% of your eligible scores. Save the Date and Think Purple! We will be holding our first club-wide event from the Purple Tees on Thursday September 20. Stay tuned for further details but it is rumoured to be an 11-hole morning shotgun, open to all Members and Academy Students. Participants will play their own ball, but no handicap will be necessary. Don’t miss what promises to be an interesting and fun competition!

Summer Initiatives As we enjoy the warm summer months of golf, our efforts to provide a fun and welcoming experience for our Ladies’ Golf Academy and Trial Members continue. On July 24, the Club hosted the second New Member Golf Event of the season. We had over 40 ladies in attendance, which included most of our Trial Members in addition to some of our first/second year Members, Intermediate Members, and buddies. Throughout the summer, our Members who volunteer as Buddies have continued to ensure that Trial members connect with others and are aware of all the golf, dining and social experiences that the Club has to offer. These efforts are highly valued and we thank all our Buddies for their commitment to growing our membership. Coming Soon As of mid-July, we have welcomed 128 non-members to our Golf Academy clinics. This represents a large group of women who have ‘crossed the bridge’ to experience a taste of golf and life at Ladies’. There are still many clinics scheduled for August and September, including Beginner, Refresher and intensive Learn to Golf Programs that you can let your network of women know about. The Junior Golf Camp for girls and boys aged 7 to 12 is scheduled to start August 13. And if you are feeling that your own game needs a brush-up, Members are welcome to join scheduled clinics.

To give our Golf Academy participants greater exposure to our Club, we will be hosting a LGA Guest Day in early September. All current and past nonmember participants are invited to play 9 holes of golf with a friend, and receive a welcome gift, prizes and Clubhouse food and beverage. In this way, we ‘stepup’ their experience of Ladies’. We follow these efforts with our Limited and Unlimited Trial offers to provide the full enjoyment of life at Ladies’. Since its inception, the Land Sale Course Planning Committee has been meeting regularly and working diligently to create a solid foundation on which to base future decisions.

Firstly, we adopted the motto “do it once, do it right”. This means considering all construction that will be required for the re-routing plan, as well as construction that will need to be done in the near future. This includes bunker rejuvenation, irrigation replacement, Academy requirements, Halfway House facilities, and emergency and maintenance access to name a few. We also must be aware of expected environmental changes and the pressure this will put on our water storage and consumption needs. Funding for many of these projects is already provided for in the existing long-range capital plan and we may want to schedule these projects to take advantage of the access to heavy equipment when construction takes place on the east side of the course. This will allow us to realize synergies and to minimize future disruption.

Secondly, we established a list of principles with which to evaluate conceptual designs. We felt that a well-defined decision process would make it easier to communicate and explain our final recommendation to Members.

The Halfway House should be strategically positioned to provide facilities for players and Academy participants. Issues of maintenance and sustainability will be addressed. Consider the total costs of various concepts separate from necessary expenses for irrigation, drainage, and bunkers.
The current focus is on re-routing the east holes (8 through 13) only. We are analyzing the options available to design a replacement hole resulting in minimal disruption and cost. Of course, we have spent time imagining what could be possible if we look at the bigger picture and increase the scale of the project. Maybe this is an opportunity to increase our pond capacity, move or modify the range, or relocate the Academy! The possibilities are endless. At this point we do not have potential designs for the various options to share with you. Our next step is to interview course architects to better determine our options. Eventually, consideration of the alternatives will take place in conjunction with the work of the Net Proceeds Committee and the Strategic Planning Committee as well as feedback obtained from Member consultation sessions.

The new lay-out should be challenging and enjoyable for Members of all abilities. The design should look like it has always been part of the course, fitting in with the style of the west holes. Good course design fundamentals should be satisfied with respect to flow, pars, and yardage preservation. Routing should be efficient for pace of play and accessibility. Safety of players during play and neighbouring properties is important. Consideration will be given to the total construction time and disruption to course play during the construction phase. Should the Academy continue to be identified as a priority in the revised Strategic Plan for the Club, the design should be evaluated in the context of providing adequate capacity and location for a suitable practice facility and Learning Centre.

“This golf course is in great shape with perfect greens,” said Sandra Angulo who tied for second place in the DCM PGA Women’s Championship of Canada held at our club in early July. This is just one of many positive comments received by the players who play at many clubs throughout North America. They loved the course, the staff and the Members. So aren’t we the lucky ones? We get to enjoy it all everyday! Let’s all continue to maintain the course in top shape by: • Keeping riding carts on the paths near the tee boxes and greens. They should not be operated within 30 yards of the greens; • Keeping riding carts away from soft spots and newly constructed areas; • Keeping push carts away from the greens and from in-between the greens and bunkers; • Repairing all divot marks on the green, whether you made them or not; • Carefully raking and smoothing over all bunker footprints and holes; and • Depositing of all garbage in the bins provided around the course. In answer to a recent question, yes the club does recycle. Each day, a member of the maintenance staff goes through the course garbage and sorts it into residual garbage and recyclables. We are looking at identifying bins as garbage versus recycling. Stay tuned for more on this. Keep those questions coming. The season is now in full swing with hot (maybe too hot for some people), sunny weather. July has been a busy month. The 9H section has hosted many events this summer, with more to come. Thank-you to all the participants and volunteers. On July 12, Ladies’ brought home the 9H Tri-Club Plaque. Congratulations to Eleanor Canavan, Kathy Constantinou, Deb Doyle, Mary Pat Frey and Wanda Ho. Ladies’ Golf Club will be showcased during the the 26th Annual Crystal Tournament on August 16, 2018. Clubs who are members of the 9 Hole Golf Association will each send 3 representatives to play in this prestigious event. We are looking for many volunteers to help run this tournament from any section of our club.

The “Think Pink for the Cure” shotgun (breast cancer awareness) took place on July 18, 2018 and it was a huge success. Players turned up dressed in pink to show their support and enjoyed a different task on each of the 9 holes (which included hitting a pink mannequin on 8A and putting into large pink cups on the greens). Later, a pink meal was superbly prepared by Chef and his staff. We are truly appreciative of the efforts put in, to make this event such a huge success by staff in the Golf Shop, Clubhouse (they decorated) and kitchen. Thought provoking questions were placed on each tee box and later discussed during the meal. Not only was breast cancer a topic, but sun safety and effectiveness of skin prevention techniques were discussed as well. Thank you all! We have 2 more shotguns to look forward to: Mexico, at 9 am on August 8 and a 60’s theme with music and a BBQ at 5 pm on August 22. Due to the many cancellations during the 9H draw times, we have extended our season by 2 weeks. The last section game will now be October 10 and our closing dinner will be October 17, 2018.

Mark your calendars! On Thursday October 18, we are having our 18H dinner party. In order for it to be a success, we need YOU, so please mark your calendars. If you look in the roster you will see that we are no longer calling it the Closing Dinner since there is lots of golf to be played after October 18. However, many of our Members start to head off to parts unknown and we want to welcome as many Members as possible. Details will follow in the September BGG but for now, save the date! The 18H Group in Action We would like to have pictures of our 18H group on the course in the weekly eblasts so if you have anything to offer, please send them to Shelby, Communications Manager at srowland@ladiesgolfclub.com. Rogues Gallery We tried to improve our Rogues Gallery in the upstairs hallway, but it did not work out as it was planned. Now that Shelby has some time, we are going to try again. We would love to have pictures of everyone up on the board for the benefit of all of us but especially the newer Members. Drop in and have Shelby take your picture if you are not on the board or you would like a retake. Volunteers You may be thinking about joining a committee for 2019. There are 16 members on the 18H committee, and every year we need to have about 5 retire so we have some fresh faces and ideas and a gradual change in the committee. The Club Championship aka “ The Ada Mackenzie Open” Michèle Bussières ARCHIVES COMMITTEE , CHAIR
If it’s August, it must be Club Championship time at Ladies! Starting in 1926 (the year of our official opening) and for every year since, we have held a Club Championship. While the Championship format and associated competitions have changed over the years, the key elements remain intact… a fun filled three days of competition at the end of which we crown a Club Champion. Ada Mackenzie was a competitive golfer, but she believed in the game of golf as a pastime for all. She wrote in a brief article “There is a fascination about the game of golf that none who have tried it can deny, and whether a beginner, good, bad or indifferent it is still enjoyable”. The Club Champion Trophy records the names of all of our champions over the years. The first name on the trophy is Miss Evelyn Mills who won the inaugural event in 1926. Somewhat surprisingly, our founder, Ada Mackenzie, did not win her first Club Championship until 1932…and then waited another 25 years to win her second in 1957! During the 1930s Ada Mackenzie was enjoying her most competitive period, winning multiple national and international events, and was named Canadian Athlete of the Year in 1933. It was noted in an article from 1949 that Ada Mackenzie actually dropped out of competition for three years in the 1930s in order to “give others a chance.” She went on to win the Club Championship a total of five times. Many other notable names from our history also have their names on the Club Championship trophy. Miss Hazel Hudson, who now has an annual tournament at Ladies’ named after her, and who was a charter Member of Ladies’, has her name on the trophy eight times. Marjorie McKenzie, whom we also have a tournament event named after, was a four time winner, claiming the trophy in 1946, and 1948-1950. Speaking of multiple winners, we have a number of current Members whose names appear on the trophy more than once. Susan Wickware’s name is on the trophy a remarkable twelve times…she must have some remarkable stories to tell of her wins over the years. Jane Kirkpatrick has her name up there five times… and claims the honour of being the first to drop the “Miss” or “Mrs.” designation.
Another Member with a remarkable five wins is Roma Watson (aka Roma Neundorf) who won the Club Championship in 1956, 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1964. Three time winners (and current Members) include Pat McClellan and Leslie Ferrari. Those whose names are on twice include Carolyn Dushenski (nee Schroter), Jean Boynton and Elizabeth Tong. Starting in 2013, a Red Tee Low Net event was added to the Club Championship and, in recent years, a Stableford one or two day option has also been added. These additions to the Club Championship program have served to provide golfers of varying abilities a chance to participate in the Championship Weekend. This year’s Club Championship runs from Friday, August 24 (Championship Flight) through August 25 & 26 (Championship Flight, Red Tee Event and Stableford). So come on out and be part of a long standing tradition! Even if you don’t play, come on out and cheer on the participants and join them for the celebration of all of our winners on Sunday afternoon.

2018 Senior / Super Senior Championships Five of Ladies’ fierce competitors made the trek to Carrying Place on July 9, to play in these championships. Once again, conditions were great, though very hot for the event. Our women played excellent golf and came home with some wonderful awards. Peta Lomberg was victorious, winning the Super Senior trophy. Way to go Peta! Carol Brown came in with second low gross. Betty Chee was so excited, she had forgotten exactly what she won, but it was a fine showing in the Seniors low net. Nancy MacTavish is on a hot streak, winning the Super Senior second low net, B flight. Special congratulations go out to Marg Auld for completing her round, after taking a ball to her face while warming up in the practise net. What a trooper! We look forward to the final York Women’s Four Ball event at Ladies’ on August 13.

Chef Umesh’s Indian Night at Ladies’ was an overwhelming success! So much so that attendees will be thrilled to see that the wonderful new menu includes his delicious Butter Chicken. With many other new and old favourite offerings, the Clubhouse is hopping these days. We look forward to another Indian Night in the fall. On Saturday, August 11 at 7:30 pm, Ladies’ is welcoming acclaimed speaker Tom Vassos to the Club for what promises to be an extremely interesting Speaker Series event. As an author, U of T instructor, and science advocate, Tom will be inspiring us all with fascinating information about our own solar system and amuse us with stories about NASA missions, and recent scientific discoveries. At 9:15am, I walked on the first tee for Lorie Kane’s first round of the championship. Carrying the tour bag up through the ropes - she calls it the “purse”, she told me to walk over the far right side of the tee and stand on the first tee. All I am thinking is “How did I get this amazing gig? And please do not drop the purse!” Here is a recap of some of the my favourite moments from the DCM PGA Women’s Championship of Canada, while caddying for Lorie Kane, Canadian Golf Hall of Fame Member.
was an amazing experience talking with Lorie about old tournaments and see what her opinion was on the future of women’s golf. Now, my top two moments from the two days. The first, is getting to the 7th hole on Day 1. Hole 7 as you know is very tricky with the wind and overall layout of the hole & green. From playing the course for seven years, I knew that we had to be below the pin.
On the Monday before the DCM PGA Women’s Championship, I arrived to work early trying to get ready for the Pro-Am the next day. It was one of the larger tournaments we had this year, so there was a lot of preparation involved, which I did not mind at all. As I was about to get started, I got a message from one of the Golf Shop staff that one of the players was looking for a caddy for the tournament. Being me, I was very curious so I asked who it was and they said Lorie Kane! I immediately thought it would be an awesome experience to caddy for a Canadian Golf Hall of Fame Member. I was scrolling through the tee sheet for that day and saw that she was playing a practice round later. When she arrived to the club, I introduced myself to her as one of the Golf Professionals here at Ladies’. We started talking about the last time she was here and all the new changes to the course. When she asked me to caddy for her, I said, “I would love to!” I was very excited to carry the “purse” around. Throughout both rounds, there were some very good conversations. We talked about what I was doing with my career and how I decided to become a Golf Professional. She was very fascinated when I told her that I have an economics degree and did not play university golf but played Ultimate Frisbee. She thought that it was a very cool route that I took and asked what steps I needed to take to get my Class A. We talked about what she was doing with her career and spoke about how excited she was to play in the U.S. Women’s Senior Open the following week. What stood out to me, was the fact that Lorie was incredibly friendly to all of her playing competitors. Watching the other players go long left, I knew we needed to get the right number and club for the hole location. I used my mathematical (adding and subtracting) skills and worked the number out to be 175. She grabbed her 5 hybrid and made one of the best swings of the day! The ball left the club, started right of the green and landed 10 feet below the hole. She looked at me and said, “Great number kid,” then walked down to the green. I was extremely impressed with myself. The second of my top two moments was on day 2 at the 2nd hole. Now, I have played this hole so many times that I have hit the ball both far left of the fairway and far right of the fairway. I knew how the hole played, either way. The par 5 2nd hole is always difficult if you do not have a proper tee shot. During the second round, Lorie’s tee shot was fading to the right and ended up in the trees. When we got to her ball, she was looking at her options – her only thought was to punch it out back into the fairway and go from there. As she was walking back from looking at the option, I mentioned to her that instead of going left, why don’t we advance the ball up to the 4th tee or in that general area. The way she looked at me, I could tell she was very surprised but we both knew that it could work. So being the caddy, I decided to do the jog up to the area where we wanted to land it and I scoped out the distance. Lorie proceeded to punch a
shot down to the 4th tee to the exact area we talked about. I looked back at Jan Flott, our 18H Captain and she gave me the thumbs up, as she thought it was a great move. As we looked at Lorie’s 3rd shot, she had a great swing but unfortunately got an unlucky kick and short sided herself. She proceeded to make a bogey but overall I thought it was a good course management move on our part, just an unlucky bounce. Playing the second hole is always an adventure for me and I am so glad I had that course knowledge to help Lorie. Overall, the experience of caddying for Lorie Kane was unbelievable. I had a great time during the tournament and I was very appreciative of her willingness to have me as her caddy. It will be an experience that I will never forget - especially when our teamwork was so great. She went one under on the last five holes!

Guest Card Holder Corner Here comes the Club Championship! The Guest Card Holder Championship increases in participation each year! Having the early tee times on Saturday and Sunday for the championship weekend, the two flights are sent out before the ladies. The first flight is Stableford. We introduced Stableford last year, a scoring system that involves scoring points based on the number of strokes taken at each hole, using a player’s net scores. The second flight is stroke play, a more traditional format. If participating in the stroke play flight, there is both a gross and a net winner. Both days count to the total round scores. Either way, the GCH Championship is a great event that you should certainly consider participating in! Guest Card Holders have the option to play in either flight. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Paddy, Ryan or myself, as we are more than happy to help. We look forward to seeing you that weekend!
