El término “Pop”, aunque acuñado ya en el Londres de los años 50 para designar la emergencia de la cultura popular en esa década, da nombre en los 60 a un movimiento artístico que internacionalizan artistas americanos como Andy Warhol, Lichtenstein y Odelburg, entre otros muchos. El pop art impacta desde sus inicios por el uso de elementos kitsch de la vida cotidiana y la sociedad de consumo como una rebelión contra la cultura del arte elitista y la seriedad que la rodeaba. No menos impacto tiene el Op Art, movimiento artístico basado en la abstracción de formas geométricas y de colores para crear ilusiones ópticas para el espectador. La influecia del Op Art en la moda en el ecuador de los 60’s, liderada por la diseñadora Mary Quant, ayuda a formular una estética afín a lo sintético y lo artificial. Los mods hacen suya esa imagen, que forma parte de un modo de vida y que retratan películas como Quadrophenia o Blow Up. A su vez, a mediados de los 60 nace en la costa oeste americana el movimiento psicodélico, suponiendo otra gran influencia en todas las disciplinas de la cultura popular. Although already coined in London in the 50s to refer to the emergence of popular culture in that decade, in the 60s the term ‘pop’ referred to an artistic movement that was internationalised by American artists such as Andy Warhol, Lichtenstein and Oldenburg, among many others. Pop Art caused an impact from the beginning due to its use of kitsch elements from daily life and the consumer society as a rebellion against elitist art culture and the seriousness that surrounded it. Op Art had no less of an impact. This was an artistic movement based on the abstraction of geometric shapes and colours used to create optical illusions for the spectator. The influence of Op Art on fashion in the mid-60s, led by designer Mary Quant, helped to create an aesthetic related to the synthetic and the artificial. The mods made this image their own, forming part of a way of life portrayed in films like Quadrophenia and Blow-Up. At the same time, the psychedelic movement emerged on the West Coast of the United States, representing another important influence on all disciplines of popular culture. The term ‘psychedelic’ refers to the effects caused by hallucinogenic drugs which became popular during that period, with Dr. Timothy Leary as guru. The images on posters and album covers visually emulated those perceptions of reality with elements inspired by Art Nouveau, fonts deformed to the point of illegibility and an intense vibration of colour inherited from Pop Art.

La gráfica de los carteles y de las portadas de discos emulan visualmente esas percepciones de la realidad, con elementos de inspiración Art Nouveau, tipografías deformadas hasta lo ilegible y una intensa vibración de color heredera del pop art.
The hippies adopted this aesthetic and peacefully defended their ideals against class difference, intolerance, racism and war, with Flower Power music and aesthetics as their banner and legendary music festivals such as Woodstock demonstrating the strength and mass dissemination of the message.

The space age aesthetic set a new futuristic trend that left its mark on cinema, fashion, and industrial design, among other artistic disciplines.
La era de la tecnología espacial tendría su momento culmen en 1969 con la llegada del primer hombre a la luna, provocando otro gran impacto social y cultural con un contundente eco en el diseño. La estética space age marcó una tendencia estética futurista que dejó su sello en el cine como en la moda y el diseño industrial, entre otras disciplinas artísticas. Tras el pacifismo hippie, la década de los 70 da paso al espíritu de lucha de los activistas políticos y una serie de acontecimientos marcan nuevos rumbos. El terrorismo irrumpe en el mundo con violencia, finaliza la guerra del Vietnam, tiene lugar la crisis del petróleo y la caída del dólar, y termina la euforia económica vivida en las décadas anteriores, produciéndose un declive en el estado de bienestar y un ascenso de gobiernos conservadores.
