María Angela Fioroni, Pelush

Pelush es todo estilo, libertad y color. Nacida en Italia y con puesto fijo en Las Dalias desde 1990, es un icono del mercadillo con sus diseños de algodón y ganchillo teñidos de manera artesanal. Con su madre, Victoria, que era modista, aprendió a diseñar y a coser y, aunque estudió Arquitectura y Pintura en la Escuela de Arte de Florencia, su vocación la llevó al diseño de vestuario para teatro. Es más, sus creaciones más atrevidas y coloristas son muy teatrales, fruto de esa herencia y esa formación. Confiesa que ha adaptado un poco sus propuestas a los nuevos gustos, más discretos, pero anuncia que para esta temporada tiene prevista una vuelta al color, que es su marca personal y lo que la hace más feliz. Empezó vendiendo ropa de piel, siempre hecha por ella y en la isla, como chaquetas, pantalones y faldas. Después, tras un cambio en su vida personal, se reinventó pintando camisetas y luego entró de lleno en la confección de un estilo muy personal, con diseños como la túnica modelo mariposa, “que fue el súper boom”, recuerda. Fue pionera en los apliques de pompones y de determinadas combinaciones de colores que han sido mil veces imitadas. María Angela Fioroni, Pelush

Pelush is all style, freedom and colour. Born in Italy and helming a permanent stand at Las Dalias since 1990, she is a true flea market icon with her artisan-dyed cotton and crochet designs. From her mother, Victoria, who was a seamstress, she learned to design and sew, and although she studied Architecture and Painting at the Florence School of Art, her calling would lead her to design wardrobes for the theatre. What’s more, her boldest and most colourful creations are very theatrical, bearing the signs of that tradition and training. Pelush confesses that she has recently adapted her pieces a bit to the current tastes, which are more discrete. Nevertheless, she has announced that for this season she plans to go back to colour, which is her personal mark and it’s what brings her the greatest joy. She began by selling leather clothing, which she herself always made locally on the island: jackets, trousers and skirts. Later, a change in her personal life would lead her to reinvent herself, painting t-shirts, until she got fully into dressmaking, with a very personal style, featuring designs like the butterfly tunic, “which was the super boom”, she recalls. She was a pioneer in the use of pompoms and different colour combinations that have now been imitated thousands of times.

Daniela Mariani, S’Atalaya

Las Dalias es el hogar de la suiza Daniela Mariani desde 1985. Sus diseños tienen legiones de fans y llegan a tiendas de Milán, Madrid o Ámsterdam. La piel de la mejor calidad y unas propuestas muy femeninas y con gran personalidad son los puntos fuertes de esta creadora, que tiene en su hija Luna la continuidad de la marca S’Atalaya. Su estilo no brota solo de un lápiz y un papel sino que es un reflejo directo de su vida en la isla y de sus experiencias, es decir, la mejor representación de Ibiza y del espíritu libre que la caracteriza. Naturales, salvajes, hippies, asimétricos, indios, punk, sexys, glamourosos… Es imposible etiquetar sus diseños porque son todo esto y mucho más. Pura personalidad. Aunque sus diseños se pueden ver en muchas ciudades del mundo, es en Ibiza donde crean todos sus modelos y donde se pueden ver concentrados en Las Dalias. Su clientela, muy fiel, les pide incluso piezas a medida. “Mantenemos los diseños clásicos de tops y bikinis y cada temporada presentamos novedades: este año un accesorio multiusos, por ejemplo. Realmente siempre tenemos cosas diferentes y nuevas”, relata Luna, que subraya que también cuentan con piezas realizadas con materiales de procedencia no animal para adaptarse a esta tendencia en alza. Las Dalias has been home for the Swiss artist Daniela Mariani since 1985. Legions of fans follow her designs, which have made their way to the shops of Milan, Madrid and Amsterdam. Top-quality leather and very feminine pieces with loads of personality are the fortes of this artist who has passed the S’Atalaya brand down to her daughter, Luna. Her style doesn’t just flow from a pencil and paper. Instead, it’s a direct reflection of her life on the island and her experiences. In other words, it’s the best representation of Ibiza and the free spirit that characterises the island. Natural, wild, hippy, asymmetrical, Indian, punk, sexy, glamourous… It’s impossible to label her designs, because they’re all that and so much more. Pure personality. Although her designs can be found in many cities around the world, it is in Ibiza where all her models are created and where they can all be found. Specifically, here at Las Dalias. Her customers are very loyal and even order custom pieces. “We still make our classic tops and bikini designs and each season we launch some new pieces: this year, we’ve created a multiple-use accessory, for example. In fact, we’ve always got new and different things”, says Luna, who underscores that they also have pieces made with nonanimal materials, to adapt to this up-and-coming trend. The must-buys at their stall include the Cleo belt, which sits over the hips, the mobile telephone pouches and the 80s-style belt pouches. All made in Spain.

Noelle Rusanzic

Un cúmulo de casualidades trajo a Noelle Rusanzic, francesa de origen polaco, a Ibiza en el año 1974. Apasionada de la astrología desde muy joven, Noelle es una de las pioneras del mercadillo de Sant Carles, que abrió puertas en 1985. Desde entonces ofrece consejo y orientación a las personas que se paran en su puesto, donde se respira confianza, silencio y concentración. Reniega de todo lo que vincula su profesión a lo sobrenatural. “La astrología y el tarot son buenos consejeros y nos ayudan a reconducir nuestras trayectorias vitales si no nos sentimos bien en un camino determinado. No tiene nada que ver con ser vidente”, explica. No le gusta ver la mercantilización y la banalización de la astrología en horóscopos de periódicos, revistas o, ahora, en Internet. Defiende que esta ciencia espiritual es algo mucho más elevado, que conecta al ser humano con el cosmos, y que puede ser de enorme ayuda para conocernos a nosotros mismos, potenciar nuestros dones y echarnos una mano en momentos complicados. Noelle conecta con la persona que tiene delante y, con la ayuda de las cartas, comprueba si está en un momento bueno o si necesita un cambio de timón. “Las cartas son verdaderamente útiles cuando las personas tienen algo importante que les preocupa, no lo son tanto cuando te acercas solo por mera curiosidad”, advierte. A series of coincidences brought Noelle Rusanzic, a Frenchborn astrologer of Polish decent, to Ibiza in 1974. An astrology lover since she was very young, Noelle is one of the pioneers of the Sant Carles flea market, which opened its doors in 1985. Since then, she has been offering advice and guidance to the people who come to her stall, which exudes trust, silence and concentration. She rejects everything that associates her profession with the supernatural. “Astrology and the tarot are good advisers and help us to redirect our lives if we don’t feel right on a given path. It has nothing to do with being a fortune-teller”, she explains. She doesn’t like seeing the way astrology is commercialised and trivialised in the horoscopes of newspapers, magazines and the Internet. She asserts that this spiritual science is something much higher, something that connects the human being with the cosmos; something that can be of hugely helpful in getting to know ourselves and reinforcing our talents, while providing great support in difficult times. Noelle connects with the person in front of her, and with the help of the cards, she looks to see whether the person is at a good moment in life or whether he /she needs a change of direction. “The tarot cards are really useful when people are worried about something important; they’re not so useful when you just come out of pure curiosity”, she warns.

Juan José Martínez, Tibu

El valenciano Juan José Martínez, conocido como Tibu por su impresionante colección de dientes tiburón, vivía entre Ibiza y Chile hasta que descubrió los inviernos en la isla y decidió quedarse todo el año. De Chile y otros países sudamericanos proceden los fósiles ammonites y trilobites que posee, y también los dientes de tiburón megalodón y otras rarezas que han convertido su casa en un museo. Un museo que traslada a Las Dalias cada sábado. Y no es fácil: Para montar su puesto necesita entre cuatro y cinco horas de trabajo. “Lo que más disfruto de Las Dalias es el trato con los niños, que se quedan extasiados con los dientes, o con las historias de los meteoritos y las piedras de Ica”, relata. Le gusta tanto dejar boquiabiertos a los más pequeños con sus piezas -que incluyen huevos de dinosaurio entre otras maravillas-, que ofrece charlas didácticas en colegios y organiza exposiciones sobre sus minerales y fósiles. Tibu atesora miles y miles de piezas, entre las que destacan los dientes de tiburón, que mucha gente se lleva porque las colecciona pero otros muchos también porque es el amuleto de los submarinistas. Subraya que solo el tiburón blanco está protegido y que hay decenas de especies de escualos que se comercializan normalmente. Born in Valencia, Juan José Martínez is known as Tibu for his amazing collection of shark’s teeth (Tibu, comes from tiburón, the Spanish word for shark). He lived between Ibiza and Chile until he discovered the winters on the island and decided to stay here all year round. His ammonite and trilobite fossils come from Chile and other countries of South America, as do the megalodon shark teeth and other oddities that have converted his home into a museum. A museum that he brings to Las Dalias each Saturday. And this is no easy task, as it takes four to five hours to set up his stall. “What I enjoy most about Las Dalias is the interaction with the kids, who are captivated by the teeth and the stories of the meteorites and the Ica stones”, he says. In fact, he gets so much joy out of delighting the kids with his pieces—which include dinosaur eggs, among other wonders—, that he gives educational talks at schools and organises exhibits on his minerals and fossils. Tibu has amassed thousands and thousands of pieces. Among them, what really stand out are the shark’s teeth, which many people buy as collectors; yet many others buy them because the shark’s tooth is the good-luck charm of the underwater explorer. He underscores that only the great white shark is protected and that there are dozens of shark species that are normally sold. All the pieces in his collection come with certificates of origin.

Yaron Marko

En Ibiza desde 1973 y en Las Dalias desde el comienzo del mercadillo, el israelí Yaron Marko es una institución en la isla. Lo sabe todo sobre instrumentos musicales, no en vano atesora 320 diferentes en su colección privada, y es habitual verle tocar en la isla ya sea solo o acompañado. Es más, es una pieza fundamental del grupo Joan Murenu i una colla de gent bona, vinculado al famoso grupo ibicenco UC. Pasar por su puesto no solo es ponerle música a la experiencia de Las Dalias sino un momento de aprendizaje, ya que es probable que el visitante descubra un instrumento que no conocía. Campanas tubulares, ocarinas, gongs, hangs, kalimbas, didgeridoos… Su colección y su sabiduría sobre música se despliegan en cada instrumento. Un conocimiento que viene de su propia curiosidad y de los viajes que ha hecho por numerosos países, primero por obligación, ya que no podía residir en Ibiza largas temporadas porque por entonces España no mantenía relaciones diplomáticas con Israel. No fue hasta después de 1986 (cuando España reconoció a Israel) cuando Yaron pudo sacarse un permiso de residencia y establecerse definitivamente en Ibiza. “Lo que más disfruto es el contacto con la gente, poder transmitir mi pasión por la música y aportar algo a la cultura, porque la música es una parte fundamental de la cultura en cualquier país y en el mundo”, explica mientras atiende a los curiosos que se acercan a su puesto y no paran de hacerle preguntas sobre cómo se construye, cómo se produce el sonido o de dónde procede este o aquel instrumento. Israeli musician Yaron Marko has been a local of Ibiza since 1973 and a resident at Las Dalias since the start of the flea market, and he’s a virtual institution on the island today. Given that he knows everything about musical instruments, it’s no wonder that he’s amassed 320 different instruments in his private collection, and that it is normal to see him playing on the island, either alone or accompanied. What’s more, he is an essential member of the group Joan Murenu i una colla de gent bona, which is associated with the famous Ibizan group UC. A stop at his stall doesn’t just mean adding music to the Las Dalias experience; it’s a moment to learn, as the visitor is sure to discover an instrument that he/she has never seen before. Tubular bells, ocarinas, gongs, hangs, kalimbas, didgeridoos and more. His collection and his knowledge of music come to the fore in each and every instrument. A wisdom that stems from both his own curiosity and his travels through countless countries, initially out of obligation: he wasn’t allowed to stay in Ibiza for long periods of time because in those years, Spain had no diplomatic relations with Israel. It wasn’t until after 1986 (when Spain recognised Israel) that Yaron could apply for residency and permanently settle in Ibiza. “What I enjoy most is the contact with the people, being able to transmit my passion for music and bring something to the culture, as music is a fundamental part of culture in any country and in the world”, he explains while attending some curious visitors who come up to his stall and ask him question after question about how this or that instrument is built, how it produces sound and where it’s from.

¿Quién es Tania Panés?

Soy, ante todo, un ser cambiante. Escritora, historiadora del arte, viajera, nómada… No creo que las etiquetas puedan contenernos durante mucho tiempo. Tras estudiar Historia del Arte en Madrid y París, decidí abandonar el sistema académico institucionalizado para recorrer horizonte y calle. El mundo está ahí para que lo exploremos, y el haber tenido la oportunidad de viajar me ha permitido percibir las diferentes realidades desde un amplio prisma. Viajar es tan importante como estudiar.

¿Cómo valoras tu experiencia en el mercadillo?

La primera vez que fui a Las Dalias debió ser en 1997 o 1998. Mis padres veraneaban en la isla y yo tenía unos ocho años. Recuerdo perderme en un laberinto infinito de telas y cojines; el olor a incienso y a palo santo, el brillo de los anillos de plata y lapislázuli del Rajastán, las vestimentas orientales, las artesanías y productos orgánicos ibicencos... Era como entrar en otro mundo; el mundo de aquellos que habían dejado las ciudades para vivir de una forma distinta y genuina, viajando por el mundo para traernos los tesoros más extravagantes de los lugares más recónditos. El hecho de ser yo una de las expositoras en estos momentos me parece, lejos de surrealista, casi natural. Who is Tania Panés?

Above all, I’m unpredictable. A writer, art historian, traveller, nomad … I don’t think labels can contain us for too long. After studying Art History in Madrid and Paris, I decided to leave institutionalised academia, to explore the world and the street. The world is out there for us to discover and having the opportunity to travel has enabled me to see the different realities of the world from a broad perspective. Travelling is just as important as studying.

How would you rate your experience at the flea market?

The first time I visited Las Dalias must have been in 1997 or 1998. My parents spent the summers on the island and I was around eight. I remember getting lost in an endless maze of fabrics and pillows; the smell of incense and rosewood, the sheen of the silver and lapis lazuli rings from Rajasthan, the Eastern clothing, the craftwork and organic products from Ibiza... It was like entering another realm; the world of those who had left the cities to live a different, genuine lifestyle, travelling the world to bring us the most extravagant treasures from the most remote places. It feels almost natural to me to have a stall here now.

¿Qué ofreces y qué aportas a Las Dalias?

Entre algunas de las actividades literarias a las que me dedico está momentoverso, un acercamiento de la poesía a la gente a través de un acto casi performático que consiste en improvisar poemas con una máquina de escribir. La persona me da un tema y yo escribo el poema on the spot. De este modo, el poema se convierte en el vínculo entre dos desconocidos y ambos formamos parte del proceso creativo. Luego de recitarle el poema, la persona se queda con él y decide cuánto quiere pagar por su pequeña pieza poética. La experiencia que yo ofrezco no consiste únicamente en que te lleves un poema personalizado a casa, sino en hacer que te “desnudes”, no para mí, sino para ti. Un pequeño viaje interior donde la sensibilidad y la belleza puedan emerger sin miedos ni prejuicios.

¿Qué te aporta a ti Las Dalias?

Las Dalias me ha acogido desde el primer momento como si fuera una más de la familia. Hasta ahora me ha aportado amistades, experiencias con visitantes y artesanos de todas partes del mundo y un lugar donde poder poner mi mesita y dedicarme a lo que más me gusta: escribir. What do you offer and what do you bring to Las Dalias?

My different literary activities include the momentoverso, which brings poetry to the people through an almost performancetype act: improvising poems with a typewriter. The person gives me a theme and I write the poem there on the spot. So, what happens is, the poem becomes the connection between two strangers and we both form part of the creative process. After reciting the poem to the person, he /she keeps it and decides how much he /she wants to pay for the little poetic piece. The experience I offer doesn’t just consist of you taking home a personalised poem; it actually spurs you to “expose” yourself, not for me, but for yourself. A small journey within, where sensitivity and beauty can emerge, free of hang-ups and preconceptions.

What do you get out of Las Dalias?

Since day one, Las Dalias has taken me in as another member of the family. Thus far, it has given me friendships, experiences with visitors and artisans from all around the world and a place to set up my table and do what I like best: write.

También muestro y vendo las experiencias de autoconocimiento y desarrollo personal que voy creando bajo las marcas Ibiza Philosophy, Noosphera y Misofia. It’s moving towards a more experience-based supply for visitors: beyond just buying things, the visitors want to do things, they want to experience things. At my stand, in addition to buying products, you can try my healing, inner growth and self-knowledge proposals from the creative and authentic point of view. My consultations mainly target people who want to do deep selfknowledge work. I also display and sell the self-knowledge and personal development experiences that I create under the Ibiza Philosophy, Noosphera and Misofia brands. Este carrusel de almas, esta migración anímica permanente, este flujo múltiple en manifestaciones del espíritu llena y vacía los mundos de la vida en todos sus rincones, en todos sus repliegues, maximizando la experiencia vital hasta niveles insospechados. Solo así, solo en este juego eterno se explican las atrofias del sufrimiento humano como un afán de Brahman de experimentar todos los acontecimientos posibles, desde el éxtasis absoluto hasta la más infame de las degradaciones, hasta el punto de que todo volverá a repetirse una y otra vez, en un viaje brahmánico en el que el eterno retorno sin límites de lo mismo deviene inexorablemente el gran protagonista de la existencia, ante la mirada estupefacta de los viajeros extraviados. Un extravío que es personal, legítimo, oportuno, natural, necesario, libre de juicio y, sobre todo, sorprendente y misterioso, soportado por una mezcla de amor, aceptación y experimentación entregada al fondo bondadoso e insobornable del viaje de la vida, fondo que en su llamada permite al viajero decidir cómo emprender el camino de vuelta a casa o, en su defecto, cómo, haciendo oídos sordos, continuar navegando, un poquito más, las olas del océano que todo lo es. Music has been a part of Las Dalias throughout its 67 years of history. Only the accursed virus that arrived in 2020 has been capable of silencing the voices, the guitars, the drums and of stopping the dancing. But we are back, with new concerts and shows. In these times of uncertainty, the only sure thing is that the sounds of the world, the new stars in Spanish music and the best Indie DJ’s will be back to the garden stages and to the new indoor hall, which has been completed revamped. Las Dalis is the home of music, music that you will only find here. Enjoy it!

La mayoría de las imágenes que encontrarás a continuación corresponden a los conciertos que se celebraron en Las Dalias en 2019, cuando se cerraba una temporada increíblemente creativa para la música en directo en este jardín babilónico de Sant Carles. Solo con realizar un recorrido a través de estas fotos tendrás una idea sobre la diversidad de artistas y sonidos que se concentran cada año en Las Dalias. Las restricciones de la pandemia limitaron al máximo la programación en 2020, pero a partir de ahora volveremos a disfrutar de la música, uno de las esencias de esta casa.

Most of the pictures you will see here were taken at concerts in Las Dalias in 2019 at the end of a particularly brilliant season for live music in the Sant Carles Babylonian garden. Just by glancing through these photos you will get an idea about the diversity of the performers and sounds that come together at Las Dalias each year. The restrictions of the pandemic limited the 2020 programme, but from now on we can enjoy music again, something that comprises one of the essences of this venue.

¿Sabías que el germen del mercadillo de Las Dalias fue una pequeña sala de exposiciones? En 1983, dos años antes de que las primeras paradas de artesanos se instalasen en el jardín, la galerista inglesa Helga Watson-Todd y Juan Fernando Marí, Juanito, el hijo del fundador de Las Dalias, abrieron un espacio para que los pintores y escultores de la isla pudieran exponer sus obras. Fue todo un acontecimiento en Ibiza. Desde entonces, Las Dalias siempre ha estado vinculada al mundo de la creación artística. La prueba más reciente la encontramos en el festival de arte Libertarte, que cada verano recibe en La Dalias a artistas, músicos, actores y propuestas performáticas, que elevan todavía más la experiencia del Night Market. Perderse entre las obras, zambulléndose en los diferentes mundos creativos de los artistas, conocerlos personalmente, observar cómo trabajan en directo o simplemente desconectar con alguna de las actuaciones en vivo son algunos de los alicientes de Liberarte. Did you know that the origin of the Las Dalias flea market was a small exhibition hall? In 1983, two years before the first artisan stalls were set up in the garden, the British gallery owner Helga Watson-Todd and Juan Fernando Marí, Juanito, the son of the founder of Las Dalias, opened a space where the island’s painters and sculptors could show their work. It was a big event in Ibiza. And Las Dalias has been associated with the world of art ever since. The most recent evidence of this can be seen in the Liberarte art festival, where, every summer, Las Dalias receives artists, musicians, actors and performances that further intensify and enhance the Night Market experience. Getting lost amid the works of art, plunging into the different creative worlds of the artists, getting to know them personally, observing their technique while they work and simply disconnecting with a live performance, are just a few of the attractions of Liberarte. Families are one of the audiences that have most appreciated

El público familiar ha sido uno de los que más ha valorado esta iniciativa, que permite a los pequeños aproximarse al arte de una manera divertida, natural y en un contexto poco común. La gran acogida que ha tenido, tanto por parte de los creadores de la isla como de los visitantes, le augura un gran futuro repleto de nuevos proyectos artísticos. Libertarte es, en suma, una exposición colectiva de arte contemporáneo por la que ya han pasado decenas de artistas residentes en la isla. Y es que Ibiza es, no hay que olvidarlo, un refugio para artistas de todo el mundo desde los años 30 del siglo pasado. Las Dalias continúa así apoyando a la cultura en todas sus facetas, como se refleja también en la edición de nuestra revista-anuario o la convocatoria del Premio Internacional de Cuento. this initiative, which allows the little ones to learn about art in a fun, natural way and in an unusual context. Given the great response of both the island’s artists and its visitors, this event can certainly anticipate a great future full of new art projects. Ibiza Vinyl Club (IVC) ha conseguido reunir a los más devotos del vinilo en la isla, a la vez que capta a más seguidores para la ‘secta’ de lo analógico. IVC es también el germen de la fiesta Vinyl is Back, que congrega en Las Dalias a los amantes y coleccionistas de los discos en vinilo de la isla, que cada día son más y más activos. ¿Quién nos iba a decir que los vinilos se iban a vender más que los CD? ¿O que el viejo tocadiscos iba a tomar la fuerza que ha tomado en plena explosión digital? Pues así ha sido porque la música en vinilo y los discos ‘de toda la vida’ tienen una magia difícil de explicar pero muy fácil de sentir. En temporada baja, la fiesta Vinyl is Back es, sobre todo, un encuentro para compartir y celebrar todo lo relacionado con este mundillo: desde la música hasta el diseño de cubiertas, portadas desplegables y booklets, que eran y son una auténtica obra de arte. Pero no pienses que Vinyl is Back es una simple feria para comprar discos. En absoluto. Los organizadores proponen experiencias sensoriales únicas en cada velada. Muestran los últimos avances en sonido, convocan a dj’s residentes expertos en este formato para que pinchen música muy especial de sus colecciones privadas, además de fichar a ilustres invitados especiales. Y en cada jornada se prepara un menú especial y muchas sorpresas para completar una experiencia única. Ibiza Vinyl Club (IVC) has managed to round up the island’s most avid vinyl aficionados, while winning over more followers of the analogue ‘cult’. The IVC is also the originator of the Vinyl is Back Festival, an event that brings together at Las Dalias the island’s vinyl album lovers and collectors, who are becoming increasingly more active. Who would have ever thought that vinyl records would be selling more than CDs? Or that the old record player would make such a huge comeback in the middle of the digital boom? Well, that’s exactly what’s happened, as music on vinyl and those old records of our lifetime have a magic that’s hard to explain but so easy to feel. In the low season, the Vinyl is Back Festival is above all a gathering that aims to share and celebrate everything relating to the world of vinyls, from the music itself to the cover design and the fold-out album covers and booklets, which were and still are genuine works of art. But don’t think for a second that Vinyl is Back is just a fair where you can buy records. Not at all. The organisers offer singular sensory experiences every night, with all the latest advances in sound. Moreover, they bring together the top resident vinyl DJs to play very exclusive music from their own private collections, and they feature special guests from the vinyl world. What’s more, for each celebration, they plan out a special menu and loads of other surprises, to make this one-off experience complete.

Cuando llega el otoño, cuando Ibiza echa el telón de la temporada alta, Las Dalias celebra una gran fiesta en familia con los artistas de todos los puestos, el staff al completo y los colaboradores más cercanos. Es el Family Day: un momento de hacer balance y, sobre todo, de dar gracias por una temporada más en este lugar único en el mundo. Pocos visitantes saben que en un rincón del gran mercadillo, bajo sus pies, se esconde un bonito secreto: están enterradas las ofrendas de la ceremonia de Pago a la Tierra que cada año preside María Valdivia. Se cava un hoyo en la entrada posterior del mercadillo y allí se depositan miel, vino, aceite, flores y frutos de la tierra de Ibiza: desde algarrobas a almendras y aceitunas. La música, las palabras de María Valdivia y las colaboraciones de los asistentes, que aportan sus ofrendas, completan este emocionante y sencillo Pago a la Tierra. “Esta ceremonia proviene originalmente los pueblos más antiguos de Sudamérica, que hacían estas ofrendas en agradecimiento por la cosecha a la Madre Tierra”, explica Valdivia, que hace años sintió que era una ceremonia que había que hacer en Las Dalias: “Es un centro neurálgico de la isla”. Y es que en Ibiza se cosecha mucho cada año, en todos los sentidos, pero no se daba las gracias por ello. María Valdivia reconecta la isla con la naturaleza con este sencillo ritual. “Crea una gran energía de hermandad”, subraya. When the autumn arrives, when Ibiza closes the curtain on its high season, Las Dalias holds a big party as a family with the artists of all the different stalls, all the staff and the closest coworkers. It’s Family Day: a time to look back at the year and assess, and above all, to give thanks for yet another season at this singular place in the world. Few visitors know that buried beneath their feet in a corner of the great flea market lies a lovely hidden secret: the offerings of the Giving Back to the Earth ceremony that is led by María Valdivia each year. A hole is dug in the back entrance of the flea market and in it they place honey, wine, oil, flowers and fruit from the Ibizan countryside: anything from carob beans to almonds and olives. This poignant, simple Giving Back to the Earth ceremony is completed by music, the words of María Valdivia and the cooperation of all the participants, who bring their offerings. “This ceremony originally comes from the most ancient peoples of South America, who made these offerings to thank Mother Earth for the harvests”, explains Valdivia, who years ago felt it was a ceremony that ought to be held at Las Dalias: “This is a central hub on the island”. And the fact is, a whole lot is harvested every year on Ibiza, in every sense, yet the people didn’t use to give thanks for it. María Valdivia reconnects the island with nature through this simple ritual. “It creates a great energy of brotherhood”, she points out.

Antes de que esta ceremonia dé por inaugurado el Family Day, ya se está cociendo algo en Las Dalias: desde las siete de la mañana los cocineros están preparando todo lo necesario para elaborar la paella gigante con la que se convida a los más de 300 invitados a la fiesta. Todo un acontecimiento que cierra la temporada y que se ha convertido en un clásico. La dirección de Las Dalias siempre pide una ovación para los cocineros que cada año elaboran el suculento plato mientras los asistentes graban y fotografían la proeza con sus móviles. Before this Family Day opening ceremony, something is already cooking at Las Dalias: as of seven o’clock am, the cooks are preparing everything they need to make the giant paella that will be served to the more the 300 guests at the party. This major event closes the season and has become a classic. The director of Las Dalias always calls for a standing ovation for the cooks who prepare this succulent dish each year, while the guests record and photograph the great paella with their mobile phones.

Tras la comida del Family Day, todos los invitados se trasladaron al jardín de Las Dalias, donde se entregaron los premios del público a los mejores puestos. En la última edición, la entrega llegó con una sorpresa: unos nuevos premios extraoficiales, votados por los propios titulares de los puestos, con el humor como bandera. El premio a la más ‘Siestera’ o ‘Siestero’ fue para María Ferrer, que recibió como regalo un antifaz y un cojín de cuello para que sus siestas sean más placenteras. “¡Una siestita, María!”, coreaban los asistentes entre risas.

After the Family Day lunch, everyone went out to the Las Dalias garden, where the people’s awards to the best stalls were given. At the last celebration, the awards came with a surprise: a number of new unofficial awards, voted by the owners of the stalls themselves, all with a good dose of humour. The award to the best ‘Napper’ went to María Ferrer, who received a sleep mask and a neck pillow to make her naps more pleasant. “Have a little nap, María!”, everyone chanted amid the laughter.

El premio al ‘Bloqueador/a de tráfico’, es decir, el que pone de los nervios a todos los artesanos porque ha aparcado o parado donde no debe, fue, ex aequo, para Alok de World Family Ibiza y para Norberto. El premio al mercadillero que ‘Siempre necesita algo’, ya sea un cable, una grapa o una linterna, fue para Amandine, que se llevó un kit de emergencia con productos de primera necesidad. El premio al ‘Glamour’ fue, por abrumadora mayoría, para la sonrisa de Las Dalias: Nica Canica. El premio al mercadillero ‘Invisible’ se lo llevó Ignacio Massone que, además, recibió esta distinción humorística el día de su cumpleaños, el 15 de octubre. Recibió, entre las risas de todos sus compañeros, un maniquí para que atienda el puesto en su ausencia. Además, Juanito Marí, alma mater de Las Dalias, entregó unos premios especiales entre los titulares y el personal del mercadillo: El premio al ‘Miembro Estrella de Las Dalias’ fue “por goleada” para Noelia Montoya, la Noe, que recibió el galardón en medio de una gran ovación. El puesto ‘Revelación de 2019’ fue para Tania Panés, una poeta que con su máquina de escribir ha llenado de versos el mercadillo. El último premio fue al ‘Mejor colaborador’, el que siempre ayuda a todos y que, casi por unanimidad, fue para Khalid. Then came the award for the best ‘Traffic Blocker’, in other words, that person who gets on all the artisans’ nerves for parking or stopping his car where he shouldn’t. In this case, there was a tie between two vendors, Alok of World Family Ibiza and Norberto, who both received the award. The award to the vendor who ‘Always needs something’, whether it’s a cable, a staple or a torch, went to Amandine, who was given an emergency kit with the basic essentials. By overwhelming majority, the ‘Glamour’ award went to the smile of Las Dalias: Nica Canica. The award to the ‘Invisible’ vendor went to Ignacio Massone, who moreover received this comical distinction on his birthday, 15 October. Amid the laughter of all the fellow artisans, he received a mannikin to oversee his stand when he isn’t there. Moreover, Juanito Marí, the alma mater of Las Dalias, gave out some special awards among the stall owners and staff: The award to the ‘Star Member of Las Dalias’ went to Noelia Montoya, la Noe, who won “by a landslide” and received the prize amid a standing ovation. The ‘Best New Stand of 2019’ award went to Tania Panés, a poet who has filled the flea market with verse, using her typewriter. The last prize was for the ‘Best Co-Worker’, that person who is always there to help others. And by almost unanimous vote, that award went to Khalid.

Más de 8.000 visitantes de Las Dalias participaron en la última edición de los Premios a Los Mejores Puestos, en la que pudieron votar sus rincones favoritos del mercadillo. Y el ganador de 2019 fue todo un clásico, que lleva nada menos que 34 años en Las Dalias: Hugo Podzamczer y su marca Danis Poppets. En la ceremonia estaba tan emocionado que apenas pudo hablar, por eso la revista de Las Dalias lo entrevistó unos días después, cuando se declaró muy contento porque sabe, además, que ese reconocimiento “viene de los miles de niños y niñas que han pasado por este puesto en todos estos años”. Y es que tener una pieza de Danis Poppets es lo más parecido a tener una mascota de verdad: sus marionetas están llenas de vida y de ternura. “Llegué a las Dalias en el año 1986 pero con un producto muy diferente: papiros. Fue hace 20 años cuando comencé con los muñecos”, que están completamente fabricados por él y su familia, explica. Sus clientes no solo son niños y niñas sino también maestros de escuela que se llevan las marionetas de animales para las clases y actividades More than 8,000 Las Dalias visitors took part in the last celebration of the Best Stalls Awards, where the people were able to vote for their favourite corners of the flea market. And the winner of 2019 was a total classic who has been at Las Dalias for no less than 34 years: Hugo Podzamczer and his brand, Danis Poppets. He was so excited at the ceremony that he could barely talk. For that reason, Las Dalias magazine decided to interview a few days later. He said he was very happy, because he also knew that this recognition “comes from the thousands of children who have come by this stall all these years”. And in fact, having a piece by Danis Poppets is the closest thing to having a real pet: his marionettes are full of love and life. “I came to Las Dalias in 1986, but with a very different product: papyrus. It was 20 years ago that I began to make the puppets”, which, he explains, are 100% manufactured by him and his family. His customers are not just children; they are also school teachers who buy the animal marionettes for their classes and after-school activities. Through the years, the parents’ appreciation for the puppets has changed a lot.

Ver a sus hijos con un muñeco en la mano les encanta porque ahora solo quieren pantallas y tecnología. Pero hay cosas más allá de la tecnología que hay que mantener”, reivindica Hugo Podzamczer. Sus marionetas le han permitido hacer un estudio casi sociológico estos años: sabe qué le va a gustar a un niño y a una niña. Da igual del país del que venga. “Las niñas eligen conejos y los niños erizos en un 98 por ciento de las ocasiones”, asegura. Eso cuando son muy pequeños, y ya con 8 a 12 años, “las niñas eligen oso o gato y los chicos, mapache o ardilla”. “No me preguntes por qué. Solo sé que es así desde que comencé. Es muy fuerte”, relata entre risas. Otro pequeño secreto de uno de los puestos más queridos de Las Dalias es que Hugo fue clown durante 30 años. Tal vez por eso tiene tan buena mano con sus pequeños clientes y tanta destreza para mover sus marionetas como si estuvieran vivas. La lista de los cinco puestos más votados durante la temporada 2019 por el público la completan Nica Canica, Verónica Batista; Joy & Ria, de Laurent Caminade; Oscararte Ibiza, de Oscar Gallizia, y Zenzele, de Suzanne Karakashian. También recibieron muchos votos y quedaron entre los diez primeros clasificados los puestos Pizzeria, Pintxos de Diego Navarro, Las Almaritas, Tania Panés y Arte en tela de saco de Antonio Portero. Como colofón, tras la ceremonia de Pago a la Tierra, la paella y los premios, llegó el flamenco fusión de Paco Fernández y su grupo, además de la sesión del dj Joan Ribas, con su flow flower power. “Because the puppets aren’t technology, they like them much more now. They love seeing their kids with puppets in their hands, as kids seem to only want screens and technology these days. But there are some things beyond technology that need to be conserved”, Hugo Podzamczer asserts. His puppets have also enabled him to run a sociological study through the years: he knows exactly what a boy will like and what a girl will like. Regardless of what country they’re from. “98 percent of the time, the girls choose rabbits and the boys choose porcupines”, he assures. That’s when they’re little. When they’re a bit older, between ages 8 and 12, “the girls select either bears or cats, while the boys go for racoons or squirrels”. “Don’t ask me why. All I know is that it’s been this way since I began. It’s really a trip”, he says, laughing. Another little secret of one of the most loved stalls of Las Dalias is that Hugo was a clown for 30 years. Maybe that explains how he connects so well with his young customers and how he is so dexterous when moving his marionettes as though they had a life of their own. The list of the five stalls most widely voted by customers during the 2019 season is completed with Nica Canica; Verónica Batista; Joy & Ria, by Laurent Caminade; Oscararte Ibiza, by Oscar Gallizia; and Zenzele, by Suzanne Karakashian. Other favourite stalls that ranked in the top ten were Pizzeria; Pintxos by Diego Navarro; Las Almaritas; Tania Panés; and Jute Art, by Antonio Portero. And to top off a wonderful event, after the Giving Back to the Earth ceremony, the paella and the prizes, all attending enjoyed the flamenco fusion of Paco Fernández and his group, as well as the session by DJ Joan Ribas, with his flower power flow.

El proyecto solidario DAR se puso en marcha en diciembre de 2020 por iniciativa de las más de 300 personas que componen la familia de Las Dalias, que quisieron aportar su granito de arena para los más necesitados. La primera iniciativa consistió en un sorteo para el que los artesanos y artistas donaron distintas piezas. La recaudación alcanzó los 2.000 €, que se entregaron a la entidad Carritos Solidarios Marco Martín, que distribuye las ayudas en Ibiza de forma altruista entre los más afectados por la crisis de la pandemia. Os animamos a participar en los nuevos sorteos solidarios que realizaremos para contribuir a DAR y a proyectos de carácter social o medioambiental en la isla. The DAR charity project kicked off in December 2020 on an initiative by the more than 300 people in the Las Dalias family who wanted to do their bit for the most needy. The first initiative consisted of a draw for which the craftspeople and artists donated different pieces of their work. The proceeds amounted to €2000 which we donated to the charity “Carritos Solidarios Marco Martín” who altruistically distributes aid in Ibiza to those who have suffered the most hardship during the pandemic. We encourage you to take part in the new charity draw that we are holding to further donate to DAR, and to social and environmental projects around the island.
