An Update from Women’s Golf Association
When I moved to Santa Barbara, I didn’t know anyone except our real estate agent. That changed thanks to the La Cumbre Women’s Golf Association who welcomed me, even with an average golf game. Here I found an amazing group of friends. That is the best thing about the WGA, a group of welcoming women, interested in a little exercise, socializing, lunch and, oh yes, golf.
This well-run organization of over 130 women plans a game for every Tuesday morning, runs about eight tournaments a year, hosts monthly guest days with other clubs in the area and supports a charity during the holiday season. In addition to Tuesday play, women gather on Saturday mornings for a “pick-up” game. For those women interested in team competition, there are three interclub teams throughout the year.
This year Jane Atwater hosted our first Nine and Wine event opened to all La Cumbre women who golf. It was fun to play with our sister organization, the Niners, as well as La Cumbre women who are tennis members or who just play golf at our beautiful club. We plan to hold more of these events next year.
The WGA Board, including Maggie Marks, Judi Brooks, Gaile Haslem, Noel Lucy-Ris and myself, oversees the organization. But the strength of the WGA is in the many women who volunteer their time and talent to run the events. They include Stina Hans for monthly Ace Day, Chriss Zubas for the monthly Guest Day and Nancy Falberg who publishes the newsletters. Annetta Patrick and Barbara Lowes are in charge of the Member Guest (aptly themed Another Day in Paradise) while Cynthia Krueger and Sue Gloy ran the Spring Fling with a Hummingbird theme. In December there is a special Holiday Guest Day chaired by Marianne Carter and Linda Bialla.
An Update from Women’s Golf Association
Our Team and city team captains were Chris Portney and Sue Wilcox while summer team, for higher handicappers, was led by Tracy Jenkins and Roberta Collier. The 805 Cup is a competition with Alisal and is organized by Joan Tomeo and Chris Portney.
The Women’s Cub Championship was hosted by Claudia Thoreson and won by Sue Wilcox and the Senior Club Championship will be hosted by Alicia Sinclair in November.
The other member tournaments are led by Suzie Swenson (Better Ball of Partners), Marni Pinsker and Sheila Davidson (Solheim Cup), Annetta Patrick (President’s Partners Cup), Sarah Pasche and Jane Lodas (Turkey Shoot) and Alison Hedge and Roberta Collier (Holiday Mixer).
Finally, we can’t a have successful organization without our Parliamentarian (Roberta Collier), Rules Chair (Joan Tomeo) and Hospitality Chair (MJ Baumgartner). Allie Banyattrakoonpan keeps track on the Women’s Holes-inOne and makes sure we know to get our drink. We have two Ringer events run by Wendi Hunter where we learn how good a golfer we could be if we played each hole well.
If you would like to know who is in the WGA, take a look at the photo wall in the Women’s Locker room artfully maintained by Anna Frederich.
Many thanks to Ritter Ganong, Evan Colavincenzo, Travis Bregman and the golf support staff who support our organization Wayne Mills and his fine staff who provide a
Update from AdamZubek, GM/COO
As we transition from a summer season filled with camps and poolside leisure to a bustling period of golf and tennis events, I wanted to share some updates with you.
Member Engagement:
Over the past month, I've dedicated my efforts to connecting with members who utilize the club in different ways. My primary goal has been gaining a deeper understanding of what you appreciate most about the club and identifying areas where we can make improvements. Your feedback is invaluable, and I'm committed to always making time for member input, particularly in the upcoming year. I eagerly anticipate more opportunities to engage with you.
This month, you will be asked to complete a Member Satisfaction Survey. This survey is used to assist management, the committees and board in evaluating our offerings and it helps identify areas for improvement. Please take the time to share your feedback as this survey helps immensely as we prepare operating plans for 2024.
Board Brief:
One consistent piece of feedback I've received is the desire for more insight into the activities of our board and long-range planning. To address this, when appropriate, I will prepare a Board Brief that aims to keep you informed about the board's deliberations and actions. You can access the August Board Brief by clicking here.
LCCC Campus Revitalization Plan:
In September, the Project Committee, the board, and I will be distributing an update on the progress of the LCCC Campus Revitalization Plan. This update will furnish you with the latest information on project developments, scope, and associated costs. For a recap of previous communications regarding this project, click here
Should you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at your convenience.
Warm regards, Adam

HONORING VETERANS & SUPPORTING FOLDS OF HONOR
La Cumbre Patriot s Day supporting the Folds of Honor Foundation is held each year in October to recognize and honor our La Cumbre veterans. To be held Wednesday October 18, Patriot’s Day includes a golf tournament with a player friendly format, live-ball doubles tennis event, cocktail reception with military honor guard and color guard and a sit down dinner with a featured speaker from Folds of Honor.
Patriot’s Day is unique as it is one of the only events at La Cumbre that is open to all members, Equity, Associate, Nonresident, Tennis, Social and Emeritus. Last year members from each category of membership participated in the event.
Proceeds from the event support the Folds of Honor Foundation Folds of Honor was founded in 2007 by Colonel Dan Rooney, former F-16 pilot and PGA professional. The Foundation provides scholarships for the children and spouses of our fallen/disabled Armed Forces member families. Since 2007 Folds of Honor is proud to have awarded over 44,000 scholarships nationwide. The organization has earned a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator and over 90% of funds raised goes directly to fund scholarships. In 2022, the Folds of Honor made the decision to expand its mission to include our nation’s first responders. These folks include police, fire fighters and medics. As of 2022 there were over 2 million first responders across the United States.
HONORING VETERANS & SUPPORTING FOLDS OF HONOR
La Cumbre has been a strong supporter of Folds of Honor. Through its Patriot’s Day events the Club has raised over $350,000 to help fund scholarships for Armed Forces families. Now we can also help fund scholarships for first responders who are near and dear to our hearts here in Santa Barbara We are proud to be La Cumbre Families Helping Folds of Honor Families. If you are interested in participating in the Patriot’s day events, we encourage you to sign up soon. Sign-ups are available online, through the golf shop and/or tennis center or by contacting the front office. We hope you will join us for a memorable and meaningful day on October 18.

THE GREAT PUTTING DEBATE: THE GREAT PUTTING DEBATE: SPEED VS. LINE
FROM TRAVIS BREGMAN, PGA FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONALGreat putters are often thought to have a special gift. Some people have “it,” but most don’t. We listen to what great putters say, but often, we do not translate or incorporate their ideas very well. Other times, what they say turns out to be totally untrue, and they don’t actually do what they think they do. Technology has become an integral part of the game of golf, and more importantly, it has helped us remove the mystical veil from the anecdotal evidence that so many golfers have relied on for years. In this article, we will settle the great putting debate. Is speed or line more important when putting?
Great putters have excellent speed control. Period. Case Closed. But why is speed more important than line? From five feet, the average golfer will make half of his putts. Tour pros have a 50% make rate at eight feet, so don’t feel too bad. Making a putt is difficult because putting greens are not perfectly smooth, so the ball can bump or move offline easily. Great putters three-putt far less often than the average golfer because their first putt finishes inside of the “gimmie” zone, which is 3 feet or closer. From 30 feet, the average golfer threeputts a third of the time, while a tour pro three-putts a tenth of the time on far more difficult greens. Having excellent speed control will significantly reduce the number of times a golfer three-putts. Furthermore, a putt with the correct speed has a much higher probability of dropping in the hole than one flying past.
One of the best drills for developing better speed control in putting is a game called leapfrog. Find a straight and flat portion on a putting green and put two tees in a line three feet apart. Walk back in line with those tees, so there is five feet between you and the first tee. The goal is to hit your first putt into the three-foot lengthwise zone. Each successive attempt should travel beyond the distance of the prior attempt without traveling past the second tee. Once you can successfully fit 10 putts into the three-foot zone, you can move your starting putt back five feet, so you will be ten feet from the start of the zone. This drill will dramatically improve your feel and speed control on the greens.
GOLF ASSOCIATION Women’s
Congratulations to Chris Portney, WGA August Ace Day winner with a net 69! She tied with Tracy Jenkins, who had already won an Ace Day. June Brusse had 23 putts! This makes June the reigning Putting Queen! Having only 23 putts is probably a record, 11 on the front and 12 on the back.
Our 2023 La Cumbre Women's Club Champion is Sue Wilcox, again, this is Sue's 11th time being our champion! Congratulations to Sue, and many thanks to Claudia Thorsen for chairing this event.
It may be the beginning of the "dog days of summer" but the WGA still has a lot of events upcoming:
Warner Labor Day Couple's Tournament, September 3rd
Ace Day September 5th
Annual Member-Guest Tournament "Another Day in Paradise", September 12th & 13th

BETTER BALL OF PARTNERS
RESULTS
Congratulations to Annetta Patrick and Chriss Zubas, 2023 WGA Better Ball of Partners tournament winners!
They defeated Sue Wilcox and Nancy Falberg when Chriss, using her stroke, made a great downhill putt on the par three fifth extra hole.
It was a great match and most likely a record in number of extra holes.
Congratulations also to Gaile Haslem and Joan Tomeo for winning the consolation flight one up on hole 18.
Thank you to June Brusse and Suzie Swenson for chairing this WGA annual tournament.
Niners News
Niners, mark your calendars for our next "Spooky Nine & Dine" event on Sunday October 15th. Shotgun start will be at 3:30 and players should gather outside the pro shop by 3:15 for instructions. Wear your scariest costume and be prepared to have a lot of fun, as usual!
It hasn't been too hot yet for the Niners to gather on Friday morning for our 9-hole round. Even the fog hasn't kept us from getting out there, so set your alarms and join us. The Niners play the back nine holes every Friday morning, beginning around 8:00. Groups are formed using a deck of playing cards, and off we go! Coffee at the Snack Bar has become a tradition and is a good way to get to know more Niners Second Fridays are guest days and the last Friday of the month is a scramble, which everyone enjoys! To join The Niners, dues are $25 per year and an application form can be found on the La Cumbre CC website under Golf Associations. Alternatively, you may contact Niner Chair Deborah Lynch deborahlynch@cox.net or Communications Chair Linda Gamble tlgamble1@cox.net to begin your membership. Sign-ups for Friday games can be done on the website or by calling the Pro Shop.
Also, Niners, remember to post your score on the Ringer sheets in the lady's locker room. The Ringer Game is a way to track improved scores on each hole throughout the year. Instructions are tacked up along with the Niners roster where the scores are posted, and an envelope is provided to drop the scorecards into once you have finished recording your improved scores for each hole. The scores are only for the back nine, played with another Niner and scorecards must be signed, dated and attested to by your playing partner At the end of the year prizes will be given for the two most improved scores as well as the two lowest scores. Any questions can be addressed to Claudia Thorsen at clamoral@mac.com. It's a fun way to track your scores and see how much you are (or are not!) improving!
And as always, please know that computer skills are not necessary to sign up for Niner Friday morning games Call the Pro Shop and they will add you to the roster of players; tee-off times are between 8 and 8:30. Players of all abilities are invited to join The Niners.
A group of Niners enjoy their last Friday of the month scramble with coffee afterwards!
UPDATE FROM THE COURTS
As the summer season concludes, our courts have been abuzz with excitement. The Rachil Vincent round-robin took center stage as participants adorned themselves in pink attire to honor the cherished memory of our absent tennis member. Jane Nicolais emerged as the triumphant champion, with Robin Parker securing a commendable second place.
We have some exciting new events lined up for September. Join us on Sunday, the 10th, to witness our top players compete for the club championship. Don't miss this chance to show your support from the sidelines!
Our fall junior or adult programs begin featuring weekly clinics and weekend team tennis. Let's keep the momentum going from the time spent on the courts this summer. We have another fun grand slam challenge: participate in the US Open Wager, where predicting the tournament winners could win you a 30-minute tennis lesson gift certificate.
Pickleball ladies, mark your calendars for September 17th. Join us for the Ladies Pickleball Social Tournament from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM, followed by cocktails at the Patio Bar and Grill.
As we transition to fall, the courts remain a hub of energy. Thank you for being part of our tennis community. Stay tuned for more updates, and let's make this September unforgettable both on and off the courts.
TENNIS TIP
Returns
Watch your opponent's racket and toss closely to anticipate the spin on your opponent's serve. If the toss is over their head, it's a kick serve with topspin; be prepared for a higher bounce. If its toss to the side is likely to be a slice serve, expect a lower bounce and more sideways movement. Paying close attention to the server's motion and toss will help you anticipate the serve and help you choose the appropriate return for any serve you receive.

MATCH RECAP
The men's inter-club B team had a competitive month of August, splitting their last two regular season matches. They began with a narrow 3-2 loss to Knowlwood. However, the team succeeded in the pairings of Mark Schneiderman/Rich Belkin and Casey Brennan/Brian Bokman, securing impressive wins. Following this, they rebounded with a 3-2 victory against Polo, thanks to strong performances from John Rasmussen/Jeff Pryor, Cliff Wyatt/Gary Klass, and Mark Mosby/Ryan Rifkin.
Entering the playoffs with high spirits, the team again faced Knowlwood, this time on the road. The team displayed dominance in their wins, with notable performances by Jim Copus/Pat McAllister, Ryan Rifkin/Gary Klass, and Rich Belkin/James Zmoleck.
Moving forward to the semifinals against Yacht Club, the competition proved to be a formidable challenge, losing 14. Despite the tough outing, the team exhibited resilience. The duo of John Rasmussen/Jeff Pryor stood out with a solid straight-set victory.
The team can take pride in their achievements by reflecting on the season as a whole. A special mention goes to Cliff Wyatt who went above and beyond in their

Words of Wellness
Communication is Key
My wife is due with our second baby on August 31, so by the time you’re reading this, chances are they have arrived. In preparation for their arrival, my wife and I just had an amazing talk about our hopes, wishes, fears, expectations, and roles for the upcoming birth. With an 18-month-old running around it has been a lot harder to be intentional during this pregnancy. This allowed us to voice all our worries and excitement to each other in an intentional, safe, and supportive way. We even typed up all our responses so we can further support each other when the time comes.
I am sharing this with you as a reminder of the importance communication has across all our relationships. In our situation, it allowed us to release a lot of pent-up anxiety while also leaving space for ample gratitude appreciation. We were able to leave the conversation connected, feeling excited and prepared for the challenges ahead. When our relationships lack communication, it is easy to become stagnant and develop resentments within them.
If you have been experiencing these feelings within any of your personal or professional relationships, I encourage you to initiate some degree of communicative pathway so you can continue to move forward together. Keep up the good work my friends and remember to communicate!
With love,
