ard to believe that summer is already over and that Labor Day is almost here! Where did the time go? Birds are chirping in the trees, food and beverage business at the club is booming, and thanks to Wayne the reclaimed water project is on schedule. Speaking of Wayne, major kudos to him for keeping the disruption on the course to a minimum. That’s no small feat.

Another full field competed in the August Men’s MemberGuest Stag Day, which took place on the 18th. The format was point par with three balls counting on all holes. In the All-Member Flight, the team of John Sestak, Brian Realmonte, and the Foy Boys (Kelly & Preston) took Low Gross with 53 points. Josh Macaluso, Glenn Carter, Tom Parrish and guest Bill Bates took Low Net with 69 points, narrowly edging out Jeff Aubery, Taylor Miller, Scott Vincent and Barry Gellert who finished with 67 points. In the Member-Guest Flight, members Nico Pollero, Jordan Scott, and guests Jonny Henno and Troy Rettig won Low Gross honors with 65 points. In the Low Net category, Garrett Powell and guests Andy Powell, Joel Maloney and Chris Gregoire grabbed the title with 74 points, eeking out a 1 point victory over Milt Meler, Jess Stevenson, Tim Johnson, and Andy Gifford. Dave “Taz” Gronsky, Steve Howard, Doug Poling and Kevin West finished a distant third with 69 points. Closest to the pins were won by Josh Macaluso on #5, Kelly Foy on #7, Chris Gregoire on #11, and Justin Anderson on #17.

In the previously mentioned all-member men’s Thursday team competition, the regular season has now been completed with the team of Jordan Scott, Aaron Gilles, Nico Pollero, Jason Mochi, Garrett Powell, and Justin Dees taking the title by a single point over the team of

Justin Anderson, Jason Spievak, Mike Challen, Joel Baer, Mike Nicolais, and Tom Hopkins.

In other happenings…A Casual Couples Competition takes place every Sunday, a friendly competition where each foursome plays against the field. There is a new format each week and entry fee is $4 per couple. Enter with the Golf Shop prior to play. There are also men’s choose up games on Tuesday and Friday mornings, and all are welcome.

There have been two recent incidents where golf balls from the course broke windows on #16. Emails have been sent out to membership, and it’s pretty disappointing that no one has come forward to take responsibility for either incident. Your homeowners or renters insurance will cover that sort of thing, so there is no reason not to step up and do the right thing.

Now back to my favorite topic, course etiquette. Keep in mind that members are 100% responsible for the behavior of both guests and unattended children, and this includes all golf facilities (putting green chipping green, driving range and golf course). Golf attire is required in all of these areas, and shirts must be tucked in. If you see someone in violation or behaving poorly, please either gently remind them or pass it along to the Golf Committee. We are not going to improve in this area until we start holding each other accountable.

Lastly, bunker raking methodology continues to remain a mystery to many members. I have been paying attention, and have not played a round of golf in the last month where I did not see poor rake jobs, footprints in bunkers, and rakes placed improperly. Yesterday alone, I found six rakes incorrectly placed outside of bunkers during my 18 hole round. Perhaps my instructions in prior Divots have been too complex, and for that reason this month I have included some simple visual aids to help you in your quest for bunker perfection. You can see that there are right and wrong ways to rake a bunker and to place rakes, please take note.

Warner Labor Day Couples Golf Tourney Sunday, September 5 th

This is the final annual Holiday Golf Tournament. The Warner is the only La Cumbre annual couples event that uses a foursome competition. The all-Member tournament will use a Better-Ball of Partners, PointPar, Aggregate format. Play begins with a 1:00 PM shotgun followed by dinner and awards on the terrace.

Sunday, October 3 rd This is an opportunity for La Cumbre golfing couples to either pair up with another Member couple or invite a guest couple to compete against the field. Jake & Jones at the World Championships at Pinehurst Jake Steinwurtzel Van Hecke (8) and Jones Steinwurtzel Van Hecke (6) recently competed in the US Kids Golf World Championship at Pinehurst, NC. Jake finished 9th out of 121 players in the boys 8's, earning him a gold medal and a spot at the tournament next year. Jake shot 38/39/38, making his three rounds a total of +7.

Jennifer Steinwurtzel got to caddy Jake and was a proud mom on the bag! He had two great holes in one for birdie and one to save par. His younger brother, Jones, finished 45th in the boys six and under in his first World Championship. Jones is always smiling and making friends, and his best shot was a 20-foot putt that he sunk! One of the boy's favorite parts of Pinehurst and golf, in general, is how many great friends they have met along the way and from so many different countries. You can catch these two on the course at La Cumbre, at the practice chipping green practicing their flop shots, and as always, jumping in the pool!

Hole in One Alert!

Sepideh Chapple had her first ever hole in one on August 21st on hole #7.

She used an 11 wood from the gold tees a distance of 125 yards.

On Monday, August 23rd she not only had her second hole in one but also her third. Sepideh holed her tee shot on La Cumbre’s #17 from the gold tees using her 5-wood. Then, she revisited #7 with her third hole in one using an 11-wood from the gold tees.

WGA Updates Thanks to all of you who participated and brought your guests to our event. It was a great day, on a great course, and we had 84 great women having a lot of fun! Results here Congratulations to Annetta Patrick the WGA August Ace Day winner with a net 68.

The second Friday of the month is Niner Guest Day. This is your opportunity to invite a guest from another club, public course, or a La Cumbre tennis member to join you for 9 holes on the back nine with the green fees waived.

The fourth Friday is a scramble, and always fun to share the scoring responsibility with old and new golfing friends. So, just sign up and you will be placed in a fun foursome by the committee.

Ladies interclub begins its nine month season September 1. La Cumbre Country Club will field full teams in four different divisions with over sixty ladies competing. Matches and practices dominate the courts on Wednesday mornings.

Men’s Senior League under new captain Mark Mosby also makes its 2021 debut. The first Wednesday in September is designed for players 65 and over and the senior squad welcomes new prospects from the membership.

"Live Ball" tennis assumes the Thursday evening spot vacated by the conclusion of Men's Interclub.

Live Ball is a fast paced tennis workout perfect for the 4.0-4.5 player.

A Pickleball Mixer on Saturday afternoon September 18 rounds out the months events.

La Cumbre Country Club's strong men's interclub team finished second in the final league standings but lost in the semi finals of the playoffs. Captain Cliff Wyatt laments the tough 2-3 playoff loss to nemesis Cathedral Oaks but acknowledges this years La Cumbre CC team was the "Best Ever". Team stalwarts included Cliff Wyatt, Pat McAlister, Gary Klass, Jim Zmolek, John Rasmussen, Jim Copus, Jeff Pryor, Lloyd Suzuki, Don Logan, Mark Schneiderman, Bruce McKaig, Mark Mosby, Carl Steffens, Matt Scribner, Mac McGinnes, Rich Belkin, Paul Kuhn, Gunther Baumgarnter, Grover Wilson, Rick Fogg.

Rachil Vincent claimed the "New Outfit" winning the final leg in the Ladies Interchanging partner competitive series.

MJ Baumgartner was second Place while Caroline Miller, Angela Maloney and Annetta Patrick tied for third.

Tennis Court Future With guidance from the past

I

t is with a great deal of excitement and a little bit of sadness that Kirsten and I say goodbye to our La Cumbre Country Club family and enter a new chapter in our lives. We want to extend a heartfelt gratitude to all the members , staff and management who have given us such love and support for over four decades.

My melancholy we feel however is tempered by the fact we leave the tennis program in great hands.

Matt Berry will take over as Director of Tennis at La Cumbre Country Club. Matt's impressive resume includes being the number one ranked junior in South Africa, the number one USTA NorCal men's singles and doubles player and the MVP of the University of San Francisco men's tennis team in 2007.

He received a BA in Business marketing from USF in 2008. Most recently, Matt worked at the Knowlwood Tennis Club specializing in developing tournament level players and with the Santa Barbara Tennis Patrons developing youth tennis initiatives. Matt Berry is a gifted tennis teacher with new proven organizational l skills. I believe he is a perfect fit for La Cumbre CC.

MEET MATTHEW BERRY THE NEW TENNIS DIRECTOR OF LCCCC

Matthew Berry moved to Santa Barbara in summer of 2020, he has been working with both juniors and adults at Knowlwood Tennis club since then.

In April 2021 he was hired as the Director of Player Development for the Santa Barbara Tennis Patrons where he manages tournaments and looks to grow the game of tennis in the local community. Prior to moving Berry worked at the California Tennis Club for over ten years, serving as the head pro since 2015, and the director of High Performance Tennis since 2010. He has worked with top juniors, including Ryder Jackson, Darya Possokhova, Nitzan Riklis, Stevie Gould and Paige Cline, helping them win multiple gold balls and become nationally ranked collegiate tennis players.

Matthew also works as a regional training coach for the USTA and helps coach and develop juniors in their Team USA camps. Under Matthew the CTC junior team has won 8 regional titles and one national championship. In 2009 and 2017-19 he was the assistant coach for the USF Men's tennis team, helping them reach a season high ranking of 46. In his own playing career, Berry won the U18 South African National title and earned number 1 ranking in South Africa. He then competed for the Tennessee Volunteers and later transferred to the USF Dons.

During his college career, he won first team WCC honors both his junior and senior years and set a record for most dual match wins at number 1 singles.

In 2012 he was ranked 1 in Norcal men's open singles and doubles and won 6 regional titles and 2 national men's open titles with his CTC open team.

Tomatoes with Herbs and Almond Vinaigrette Ingredients:

• 1/2 cup almonds, coarsely chopped and sifted • 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 garlic clove, finely grated • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice • 1 teaspoon sugar • Kosher salt • Pepper

• 2 pounds mixed heirloom tomatoes, some sliced, some halved • 1/3 cup very thinly sliced red onion, soaked in ice water for 10 minutes • 1/2 small jalapeño, minced • 1/4 cup torn mint leaves • 1/4 cup torn Thai basil leaves

Preparation Step 1 In a medium skillet, cook the almonds in the oil over moderately low heat, stirring occasionally, until well browned, about7 minutes. Strain the oil through a fine sieve into a heatproof bowl; reserve the almonds for the salad. Immediately whisk the garlic into the warm oil and let cool slightly, then whisk in the vinegar, lime juice and sugar. Season the dressing with salt and pepper.

Step 2 Spread the tomatoes on a large baking sheet. Season with salt and let stand for 5 minutes.

Step 3 Drain the onions; pat dry. Scatter half of the almonds on a platter and top them with the tomatoes. Drizzle with the dressing and top with the onion, jalapeño, mint, basil and the remaining almonds. Serve.

Irrigation and drainage installed on Holes 11 and 12 teeing grounds.

Grading and sand cap on all teeing grounds to finish the grade.

16,000 sq ft of Kikuyu Sod installed from 6th green to 5th green.
