As we near daylight savings and Halloween, the weather is finally starting to feel like fall. The “bomb cyclone” arrived, bringing with it some much needed rain, but we are going to need a couple more “atmospheric rivers” to fill up Laguna Blanca!

The Men’s Club Championship was contested October 21st-24th, with an unusually large field of 26 players participating. In the semi-final round, defending champion George “Rocket” Downing defeated 2019 winner Jordan Scott, and multiple time runner-up Kelly Foy defeated yours truly. The 36-hole final match was a dog fight. Downing held a 4 up lead after the first 18 holes, but Foy came roaring back taking a 1 up lead after 34 holes. Downing then evened up the match on the 36th hole to force sudden death. Downing ultimately won on the third hole of sudden death, but both players should be applauded for some great play. Congrats to Rocket on his 9th club championship!

In other golf news, the Folds of Honor charity event took place on October 20th. The campus was festively adorned with American flags, participants were dressed in red, white and blue, and all were treated to an honor guard presentation of the American flag, a rifle salute by local Sea Cadets, and a multi-aircraft flyover.

The pledge of allegiance was recited, and the national anthem sung by all (led by baritone Jim Chapman). It was a day to be proud of La Cumbre and of America, and over $100,000 was raised for a great cause. The team of Jess & Robyn Parker/Geoff & Maggie Marks took home the Mixed Flight title, and the team of Joel Baer, Jonathan Standring, Justin Dees, and Gabe Carter took the Men’s Flight. Closest to the pin winners were Jordan Scott (#5), Justin Dees (#7), Tom Carey (#11), Barry Goss (#13), and Greg Hanson (#17).

Thanks to the 116 participants and volunteers, and special thanks to the tournament committee: co-chairs Jim Chapman & Dan McGuire, Jan McGuire, Nancy Werner, Glenn Carter, Alan Brown, Kevin McTague, and Rick Nightingale. If you did not play this year, I highly recommend doing so next year.

I have harped on correctly raking bunkers all year, and recently ran across another example of why this is so important. In the final round of the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas a few weeks ago, tour player Matthew Wolff was in contention as he was playing the par-5 13th hole at TPC Summerlin. Wolff’s tee shot failed to clear a fairway bunker, hitting the top lip and rolling back into the bunker. When Wolff got to his ball, he found that the ball had not rolled down into the bottom of the bunker as it should have, but rather was stuck in an indentation near the top lip of the bunker thanks to a poor rake job. Wolff had to play the ball out sideways into heavy rough, made a 6 on the hole, and fell out of contention. All due to a bad rake job.

The driving range remains an ongoing issue.

Many players disregard the driving range rules and signage, and because of this we continue to lose range balls at a rapid pace to both the hillside on the left side and to the balls that get run over and buried in the rough on #9. The current rule is that no club should be hit over 200 yards, but that will soon change. We will be going to a system where the furthest flag on the range will be shot with a range finder, that yardage will be posted, and that will be the maximum yardage that you may hit for that particular day. This is a heads up, and an email will be sent out when that officially goes into effect.

MONTHLY REMINDERS: Please remember that there are others playing behind you. Fill in your divots with sand, correctly rake the bunkers, and make sure to leave a smooth playing surface in the bunkers.

Rakes should be placed in bunkers with teeth down and handle resting on the lower lip of the bunker.

It is everyone’s responsibility to fix their own ball marks on the greens. And while you’re at it, fix a few more.

The blue line around Laguna Blanca still applies for members and their guests. The lake is an off-limits penalty area, and you may NOT play out of it.

Proper golf attire is required anywhere you might have a club in your hand (range, putting green, chipping green, staging area, course). This includes shirts being tucked in for men.

The couple were married at La Cumbre in 2011 and have two young children. The family advocates for the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Association.

WGA UPDATES Congratulations to the President's Partner's Cup Winners: Maureen Kincannon and Jane Lodas.

Congratulations to Karen Carey, WGA Ace Day winner for October with a net 70! She tied with Maureen Kincannon so both are eligible to play in the Ace of Aces tournament.

GOLF COURSE

Wayne’s World Well, we made it!

All the underground installation of piping and materials is complete. Landscapes Unlimited and our team did a knockout job. With a big push at the end, with most areas being completed before the Chase tournament. We started the project a little later than we intended, but we made up the time with extended hours.

Again, thank you to all members for your cooperation and understanding. I feel the project went as smoothly as expected for an undertaking of this size.

While our contractors have moved on to their following projects, we still have lots of work to complete, satisfy regulatory issues, and accept water deliveries. Below is a summary of items to be completed over the next couple of weeks.

Marking all irrigation components and their source of water. With over 1600 sprinklers 800 valves plus other components, this will take a while.

Cross connections will need to be checked and, if found to be plumbing remedied.

Areas around our Clubhouse will need to be plumbed to potable water.

Signage installed notifying of the usage of reclaimed water on the property.

Then the City of Santa Barbara and the health department, with a third-party consultant, will review and conduct an operations inspection.

Their focus is to make sure all systems are installed and operating correctly.

Our Facilities water will need to be off for three hours. We are considering dates, and a notice will go out to the membership well in advance of this work.

Complete the Native planting and drip irrigation on the 10th Hole.

Updates from the Court Spooky things are afoot both on and off the tennis courts! The shop has been transformed for the season with spooky witches, skeletons, spiders and crows to put you in a festive mood. We had a great turn out of witches for our first ever Halloween LiveBall event. Thanks to all who took part in the fun and dressed up for the occasion! It was so much fun, and we are looking forward to this new tradition!

The pro-shop is getting ready to unveil next season’s latest and greatest outfits and gear, with the big debut coming this month. We will be placing all current clothing, footwear and other merchandise on close out sale for the next two weeks to make room for all the new gear, so come by for a great deal!

Our winter programs are starting this month, and we are excited to continue current favorites and launch new programs. Please take a look at the updated Junior Clinic schedule for new days and times. We are very excited to be adding a first Friday Night Lights Junior Doubles event, and hope to see all the hard work we see at our clinics pay off in fun competitive team match play. We just wrapped up the final week of our junior fall session, and couldn’t be prouder of all the progress our kids have made!

SCORECARD Our A2 Ladies split matches with league leader Alisal Ranch in their first match of the month. Wins by Dawn Bokam/ Kelly Jensen and Bess Scribner/Cynthia Frohling highlighted the day's play. In the best match of the season La Cumbre was able to comprehensively sweep Polo’s A2’s.

Kerry Gidney/Kathleen McLychok, Dawn Bokman/Kelly Jensen, Bess Scribner/Cynthia Frohling and Donna Econn/Danielle McCaffery all had great wins showing much improvement.

La Cumbre’s B team hosted Catherdral Oaks in a hard fought match. Straight sets wins for Melissa Katzenstein/MJ Baumgartner and Daine Gainy/Angela Moloney set the tone for the match. Annetta Patrick and Lauren Katz pulled out a tight 3rd set to close out the 3-1 victory, moving the B team up to 4th on the standings.

Tied for first with 11 points the C team lost their first match of the season to Alisal Ranch 1-3, their sole victory came from Lauren Brennan/Leslie Sniederman. The C’s then went on to continue their dominance with the resounding 3-1 victory against Polo. Rachil Vincent/Lauren Brennan won without dropping a game followed by wins for Kandice Illgen/Leslie Schniederman, Michelle Nevergold/Cristy Pugh.

It was a jam packed month for our Super Seniors. After a demoralizing loss to league leaders Las Positas 9-0, our seniors showed some much needed resilience to take down the Alisal Colts 8-1. Peter Bolinger swept his old teammates winning all three lines with “the kid” Mark Sniederman.

Cathedral Oaks pulled out a really close 5-4 victory over our men, 2 close tie-breakers were the difference and we were unfortunately unable to convert the opportunities. The day was highlighted by clean sweep victories for Mark Sniederman and Steve Drummy.

The Phoenix league started up for our La Cumbre men making their first visit to Santa Barbara Tennis club. Leading the team from the front, team captain Cliff Wyatt and partner Pat McCallister swept all three of their matches.

Unfortunately it wasn’t enough and the rest of the team fell to a strong line-up, 3-6.

Tennis Tip “An object in motion stays in motion” After utilizing last month’s tip to find your balance using a solid pyramid base, we are going to expand to movement. Start to gently shift your weight back and forth with the rhythm of your opponent’s serve. This allows you to make a well timed split with the contact of the serve and help you react a little faster next time you need to make a quick reaction to a serve.

Travis played in junior tournaments in high school and continued his career at the University of California where he would become a nationally ranked amateur golfer. Ritter also started in high school and worked as a players assistant at Sierra Star Golf Course. Both are excited to join the team.

Andrea Chase began teaching yoga in 2010. Her love of the practice enabled an in-depth study of anatomy, injury prevention and strengthening techniques. Andrea is a seasoned “hands on assist” adjuster which enables her to gently move the students body into their deepest possible posture, increasing blood flow, muscle lengthening and awareness.

With six Santa Barbara Independent readers’ poll “Best of Santa Barbara” awards, Chris has maintained an ideal reputation for instruction. His "user-friendly" self defense approach and interest in presenting martial arts to children, has brought martial arts concepts to the Santa Barbara elementary school system.

Establishing Your Healthy Thanksgiving day game plan Although the holiday tends to focus mainly on food, there are plenty of ways to establish a healthy Thanksgiving day game plan and enjoy the holiday (and the meal) without sacrificing all your hard work in the gym. Here are seven creative ways to still enjoy everything the day has to offer — dessert included!

2. Go Turkey Trotting If you want to sneak in a workout before Thanksgiving dinner — but you're looking for something a bit different from your normal workout routine — consider something you can do with the whole family. How about a Turkey Trot?

3. Pick Your Favorites Of course, it's not Thanksgiving if you aren't enjoying a large decadent meal surrounded by loved ones. If you want to avoid overdoing it, simply keep an eye on how much you're putting on your plate.

5. Savor The Moment Thanksgiving is about spending time with the people you care about and acknowledging the things you're most grateful for. So, don't rush through the day — or the meal. Take it slow and savor the moment! Enjoy every bite of dessert and every conversation with loved ones. Don't waste time feeling guilty about that second slice of pie; enjoy the treat! Moderate indulgences can be key to staying on track over the long haul anyway.

6. Go For a Family Walk Speaking of a post-dinner activity that's sure to get those legs moving, why not go for a family walk or bike ride? Fall is a beautiful time of year to enjoy the outdoors, view the changing foliage, and take in picturesque views. An active group outing is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy your family's company and catch up with relatives you might not see on a regular basis.

7. Give Back In addition to acknowledging your blessings, Thanksgiving is also a time to remember those folks who are not as fortunate as you. Consider volunteering your time at a local soup kitchen, homeless shelter, or animal shelter. You'll be serving Thanksgiving dinner to those in need while teaching your children a valuable life lesson.

With some planning, you and your family can have a lot of fun getting active, giving back to your community, and enjoying a healthy Thanksgiving together!

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to count your blessings and make a mental list of everything you are grateful for.

WINE OF THE MONTH SANTA RITA HILLS

SWEET POTATO PIE YIELD: One 9-inch pie

Ingredients 3 medium sweet potatoes, peeled (about 1 3/4 pounds) 5 tablespoons butter, at room temperature ¾ cup sugar 1 ¼ teaspoons freshly ground nutmeg 1 large egg ½ teaspoon vanilla 2 ¼ teaspoons baking powder 3 tablespoons evaporated milk Unbaked pie shell, 9 inches

How to Make it Steep 1 - Place sweet potatoes in a large saucepan, and add water to cover. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer until very tender, about 45 minutes. Drain well.

Step 2 - Mash the potatoes in a bowl. The potatoes should yield about 2¾ cups mashed potatoes.

Step 3 - Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add butter to hot potatoes, and mash until smooth. Add sugar, nutmeg, egg and vanilla, mixing well. Combine baking powder with evaporated milk, and stir to blend. Add to mashed potatoes.

Whisk mixture until velvety. Mound into pie shell, then spread evenly to edges.

Step 4 - Bake until pie has set and is lightly browned on top, about 55 minutes. Cool to room temperature before serving.
