Bo Willis The April Men’s Member/Guest Stag was contested on April 20th and the format was One-Two-Three Ball Point Bogey (with three balls counting on holes 13-18!). In the All-Member Flight, there was a tie for low Gross at 67 points between the team of Vito Bialla, Jonny Hogan, Henning Thorson and Kelly and the team of Paul Portney, Patrick Nielson, Tom Orlando and Jeff Nelson. Net winners were the team of Eric Sadler, Alan Harden, Clay Hunt, and Taylor Miller with 93 points. Runners up in the Net competition were Taz Gronsky, Steve Howard, Jerry Pimm, and Kevin West with 88 points. In the Member-Guest Flight, Gross winners were John Sestak, Charlie Bissell, Pat McAlister, and Toby Chang with 67 points. In the Net division, the winning team was Eric Louie, Dan Parker, Don Beeks, and Denis Sanen with 87 points. Runners up were Doug Katsev, Mike Budzinski, Pat Smith, and Barry Fanaro with 84 points. Closest to the pin winners were Toby Chang on #5, Bob Kopf on #7 (1 foot!), Scott Pollard on #11, and Alan Harden on #17.

The longest of the four closest to the pins was 2’2”, that has to be some kind of record!

In April, four two-man teams from La Cumbre participated in the Captain A. Bullock Webster Invitational at Annadale Golf Club in Pasadena. This tournament has traditionally been one of the best run and most competitive invitationals in Southern California, drawing teams from across the country.

The format was similar to our Chase Member-Guest tournament (five 9-hole matches within each flight and flight winners playing off in a horse race for the overall title). Out of the 60 team field, two of the La Cumbre teams (Glenn Carter/Tom Parrish and Bo Willis/Mike Westmacott) qualified for the horse race. Willis/Westmacott were eliminated on the second last hole of the horse race, but Carter/Parrish survived the horse race and went to sudden death against a team from San Gabriel CC. Unfortunately, they were defeated on the first playoff hole and had settle for runners-up. That is no small feat in this tournament, great playing guys!

GOLF COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN

As mentioned in previous Divot articles, the Handicap Committee at La Cumbre is a Committee which exists only to ensure adherence to the USGA rules regarding accurate handicapping. In recent months, the Committee has found a number of discrepancies in member score posting so have had to step up their monitoring efforts, including sending gentle reminders to those who neglect to post scores.

This has led to some very unacceptable responses from members, and some pretty unacceptable treatment of Committee members. Keep in mind that the Committee is only reminding you to do what the USGA requires you to do in the first place, there is no need for animosity and/or mistreatment of Committee members. We are all members of the same club and we should be looking out for one another, not taking one another to task.

I noticed that we now have a wooden 4”x4” on #13 between the left greenside bunker and the lake. The only reason that would have been put there is because people have driven carts through that area and had to be stopped from doing so.

There is absolutely no reason or excuse for driving through there, and having to put a barricade there to stop it from happening is just an embarrassment. Come on people, we have got to be better than this.

And finally, your monthly reminder to please fill divots with sand, fix your ball marks on greens, rake the bunkers properly (push the sand away from you), and correctly place the rakes in the bunkers. These are very simple requests, and the players behind you will appreciate you for doing so. If you are not sure of the correct way to do any of these things, please let me know and I will personally show you.

Ed Fox Memorial Day Golf Tournament SUNDAY, MAY 29TH

This is the first of three annual Holiday couples’ golf tournaments scheduled at La Cumbre. This All-Member affair will begin with a 1:00 PM shotgun start. Participants are asked to make their own foursomes for this event. The competition for the tournament will be better-ball of partners with gross and net prizes awarded. Everyone will meet on the Terrace after golf for dinner and awards. Sign Up through the website or with the Golf Shop.

Jim Buttimer made a hole in one on hole #7 on Wednesday, April 13th. This was Jim’s second lifetime hole in one. He made it from the white tees using a 6-Iron from a distance of 143 yards.

Chris Hayden made a hole in one on hole #11 on Thursday, April 28th. This was Chris's third lifetime hole in one.

He made it from the white tees using a 7-Iron from a distance of 150 yards.

NINERS UPDATES

Greetings Niners!

Niners were out in force on April 10th, decked out in their best pastel finery for the monthly "Nine and Dine" couples Easter Scramble. First place winners were Linda and Tim Gamble with Susan and Jim Chapman. Second place was a tie: Anne & Tom Goodson with Sarah and Mike Paschke tied with Judy and Tom Brooks teamed with Lynn and Rick Wells. Third place winners were Roberta and Matt Collier with Al and Marsha Roberson. Fourth place went to Nancy & Russ Werner with Jan and Dan McGuire. Fifth place winners were Karen & Tom Carey with Allie Banyattrakoonpan and David Zaniboni.

Janet and Evan Colavincenzo concocted a very special "Bunny Booze" cocktail made with tequila, grapefruit juice and Sprite - just the thing to get the players hopping to the finish! Dinner invoked all things associated with Easter, featuring deviled eggs, glazed ham, spiced carrots, scalloped potatoes and a fabulous chocolate bunny dessert that was the hit of the evening. A hollow bunny was filled with vanilla vodka, Bailey's Irish Cream and heavy cream, outfitted with an Easter bonnet made of whipped cream and a strawberry top. So clever! The chocolate bunny was accompanied by beautiful Strawberries Romanoff. Kudos to chef Eric Widmer and Karen Carey for creating and executing such a delicious menu! And heartfelt thanks to our two mainstays of the "Nine and Dine" event, Kaity Swanson and Inger Kelly.

What a team!

The next "Nine and Dine" will be held on Sunday, May 1st with a shotgun start at 3:30. The format is a "Las Vegas Scramble" and players are requested to show up by 3:10

Here Comes the Sun Mark your Calendars for June 3rd Friday and RSVP to Linda Gamble for the Niners Tournament and Luncheon. Our committee is hard at work planning all the details for this fun event. You won’t want to miss it! It will be a morning of camaraderie and lots of fun for Niner members. This event begins with an early morning gathering, a shot gun start for a fun 9 hole scramble and ends in the Riviera Room with a scrumptious luncheon. Hope you can make it! If you are unable to play golf, RSVP for the luncheon only. The sun will be shining on the Niners!

Congratulations to Helen Wiley, the April WGA Ace Day winner with a net 68! Karen Carey, Nancy Falberg, Gaile Haslem and Marnie Pinsker are still tied for Putting Queen with 27 putts.

After three years, Jane Atwater, Karen Carey and Lynn Wells were finally able to host the WGA Spring Fling. It was certainly a “Blooms of Spring” kind of day on our beautiful course. The poppies were in their prime.

Since its inception, the biomedical sciences have centered the male body as the paragon of biology, often casting aside the female body as 'unknowable'.

Jacobs' lecture considers the intersection between gender equity in STEM and the status of women’s health - not as concurrent phenomena, but connected ones.

She examines critical ways in which progress in women’s health has stalled from the lack of female representation in biomedicine, including neuroscience.

She'll end by highlighting emerging research programs, public policy changes, and private sector funding opportunities that position the female body as equal to the male, and by doing so are opening up new frontiers for understanding health and disease.

Jacobs is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences. She has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Berkeley and a B.A. in Neuroscience from Smith College.

Prior to UCSB, she was an Instructor at Harvard Medical School and the Department of Medicine/Division of Women's Health at Brigham & Women's Hospital.

May Updates As we close out April, summer is around the corner, and we love our preview of the warmer weather! May is the last month of our spring session before the kids are out for school and summer kicks off. We had an amazing turnout for our Easter ladies' event. Thanks to all those that made this day special.

May is a busy month on the courts as we introduce La Cumbre Inter-club B team back to schedule. They will be playing their matches Thursday nights. Summer camp spaces are filling fast.

Tennis Tip In our last serve tip for the year, I want to pass on some of the golden rules for serving in doubles.

Use serve placement before power. Your ultimate goal is to apply pressure on the returner. Well-placed serves to opponents' weaknesses are far more effective than powerful serves into your opponent's strength.

Be conservative on the first serve. Hitting a high percentage of first serves is the fastest way to hold serve and gain confidence efficiently.

Never give a good returner an easy target. Keep your opponents guessing by calling different formations and plays to set up your partner.

One of the most underrated serves in doubles is a good body serve. When used effectively, a good body serve gives your partner plenty of opportunities to pick off poaches at the net.

SCORECARD

The A team played league leaders Knowlwood in their first match of the month. After being swept in the previous match, it was a solid match from our ladies. Angie Huff and Erica Downing beat one of the best teams in the league at line 1, and Susan Vasquez and Karen Suzuki rounded off an excellent day for the A team, winning a close 3rd set tiebreak to tie the match 2-2. In their 2nd match of the month, we hosted an SBTC at LC. Dyanne Wipf and Karen Suzuki played a strong match to win at line 3, followed by a long 3rd set victory for Sue Bickett and Susan Macmillan at line 4. It was another 2/2 tie for the A-team.

THIS MONTH, the A2 team played two matches as they looked to improve on their narrow 4-point lead at the top of the table. First on the schedule was a tough match vs. Knollwood. Toni Mochi and Kerry Gidney were first off, giving LC a convincing 1-0 start. In an up and down match across lines though, 3. The teams of Dawn Bokman and Cythina Frohling, Bess Scribner and Kelly Jensen, and Danielle McCaffery and Donna Econ were all able to come back and win in 3rd sets. It was just what LC needed going into the last match of the month against Elings.

La Cumbre B team had two matches this month. They tried to get some momentum going into the season's final month. In a competitive team match Marsha Roberson and Linleigh Ritcher won at line 2 followed by a victory at line 3 for Carey Zimmerman and Diane Gainey, forcing a split against Knowlwood B's. In one of their stronger home matches of the year, the B team hosted Alisal and came out 3-1 victors. The birthday girl, Angela Maloney and Cia Fisher won convincingly at line 4, followed by wins for the teams of Annette Patrick and Carey Zimmerman at line 3, and Melissa Katzenstein and Lauren Katz won in the three sets to round off a wonderful day and much improved month for the B team.

In the first match of the month, the C team lost to Knowlwood 3-1. It was a tough day for the ladies who struggled to convert opportunities and find their opponents' weaknesses. The highlight came with a well-spirited win at line 4 for Candy Hedrick and Jenny Kramer. In one of the most dominant performances of the season, the C team Swept Catherdral Oaks 4-0. Wins came by Cristy Pugh and Crissy Prichard, Lauren Brennan and Michelle Arntz, Leslie Schneiderman and Winnie Dunbar, and Jenny Kramer and Candy Hedrick.

The super seniors played in 2 matches this month. Both matches were close and came down to 1 set. Unfortunately, the Super-seniors lost 4-5 to City Rocket Men and Alisal Colts. There were some stand-out performances from the teams of Bruce McKaig and Don Logan. The line 1 team came close to beating all the City Rockets lines but fell short at line 1, 7-5. Bo Niehaus and Ronald Ungerer also had a strong performance winning 2 of their three sets in a competitive tie. Next up is Polo before the super's make their way to the playoffs.

For May, we have added a “Glutes & Core” class on Tuesdays at 9 AM to help facilitate the high demand. If you have yet to give it a shot, I highly recommend coming to try it.
