Golf Committee Chairman Greetings Fellow Golfers!

Things are starting to get back to normal COVID-wise, and tournament golf at La Cumbre is beginning to ramp back up.

First of all, a very competitive Senior Club Championship was contested at the end of March, and I would be remiss if I did not once again mention the winners.

Congratulations to Overall Champions Greg Moss (Gross) and Tom Parrish (Net), as well as Jeff Nelson (70 and Over Gross), and Flight Winners Dave Gronsky, Andy Winchester, Don Logan, Richard Miller, and Marshall Gates. It should also be noted that as Gross Champion, Greg Moss will be representing the club at the prestigious SCGA Senior Amateur Championship which will be held at La Cumbre May 24th-26th.

Ladies Team Play has been underway for several weeks, and it looks as though Team Captain Hilary Chapman and her squad will be making the playoffs. Good luck ladies! The first Kouples Kapers (members-only version) of 2021 took place on April 25th. Planning is being finalized for the Los Amigos Tournament which will be played on May 13th-15th, and we already have over 70 teams signed up! And last but not least, the first Stag Day in over a year is on the calendar in June.

Over the last year we have seen an unprecedented surge in number of rounds played at La Cumbre, and with that comes additional wear and tear on the golf course. Given the amount of play and the lack of rain, Wayne Mills and his crew have done an extraordinary job keeping the course looking great. We are extremely fortunate to have a true leader in his field like Wayne at La Cumbre.

This brings me to my next point. While it is Wayne’s responsibility to take care of the course, we as members also need to take some ownership in that effort. For the last year, we have not had to rake bunkers, take out pins, have been riding in carts alone, and many have taken other liberties with club rules that cannot be blamed on COVID: driving range and cart rules have been disregarded, and more people than ever are not fixing ball marks on the greens. It is our job as owners of the club to take care of the grounds, respect the club rules, and to hold each other accountable for doing so.

Now that we are getting back to normal, it’s also time for a refresher course on member responsibilities: •

Rakes are now back in the bunkers, which means that everyone is responsible for leaving the bunker as good or better than you found it. If the person before you did not rake properly, pay it forward and take a second to fix it. The players behind you will be grateful.

Please repair your ball marks on the greens and fill in your divots in the fairway with seed. And while you’re at it, fix or fill in a few others. It only takes a few seconds.

Carts should remain at least 30 yards from greens at all times, and should remain on the path on all Par 3’s. The carts are programmed to intentionally keep players out of certain areas, please respect that.

No clubs that can be hit over 200 yards should be used on the driving range. We are spending a small fortune replacing range balls that have been hit out of the range and lost because people are not following this rule.

All groups must check in with the Golf Shop before play. This especially holds true for groups that include guests, as their names need to be recorded.

Gentlemen’s shirts must be tucked in on the golf course at all times. The “golf course” includes the course, practice chipping and putting greens, as well as the driving range.

Finally, I would like to mention this year’s Golf Committee: Nancy Falberg, Hilary Chapman, Chris Portney, Mark Lemons, Barry Waters, Dave “Taz” Gronsky, Rick Nightingale, and John Sestak.

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the Golf Committee, and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish over the remainder of the year.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER MID-YEAR REVIEW OF CHANGES TO OUR

Equity Membership Sales Policy

A Warm Welcome to our newest members

The membership interest and activity remain very strong, especially with our golfing memberships.

After a review of best practices from many quality equity clubs, La Cumbre made two significant changes: 1) As of November 1, 2020, we instituted a minimum selling price of $135,000.

2) Effective July 11, 2018, we established a Clubcontrolled sale program versus an open member negotiated sale.

Since implementing the new sales program, we are pleased to report the process of buying and selling memberships has proven to be a vast improvement and stabilizing force for the Club.

The changes are working exceptionally well, and as intended, with a more straightforward process for the selling members, a much fairer process for those purchasing memberships, and has aided in the annual budgeting process. A total of 38 equity membership transactions have occurred since that time, and the Membership Committee has since exceeded budget every year, and we are currently operating with a waitlist.

Membership Sales Program Highlights: 1) The Club facilitates all sales, and the buyers and sellers no longer directly negotiate with each other.

2) Members may list their membership in twomonth increments based on the calendar year starting January through February, March through April, and so forth.

3) Members are encouraged to contact the membership office for the three most recent sales in determining a price. The selling price may be adjusted from the minimum in increments of $1,000 and is unchangeable during a selling cycle.

4) The Seller is bound to a sale by their signed agreement.

5) Once an applicant is Board approved, buyers have priority based on the date of their application.

The purchaser will be offered a membership with the lowest price in that cycle. Buyers may decline but are not allowed to counter with a lower price. If they reject a membership, the offer goes to the next applicant in line, and the applicant who declined will go to the top of the list in the next selling cycle.

6) If you do not sell during the two months, it is not an automatic renewal for the next two months. You must resubmit your paperwork.

It was a beautiful day to be on the golf course, strategizing with our partners and enjoying the col­orful poppies, and wildflowers. It was also great being together again after months of separation. We were able to have a shotgun start, as well as a lovely lunch by the pool, Yippee!

Spring has sprung and not only will April Showers bring May flowers, but they will bring our first 9&Dine for 2021 too!

A “Big” THANK YOU goes to our 9&Nine Committee, Karen Carey, Jill Winchester, and Cynthia White for taking us on line, organizing and planning the details of our first event! Like Jill says, “it takes a village”. As you may know, our event filled up in the first 36 hours after the invitation when out! Our Cinco De Mayo theme will be so fun with a shotgun start and our dinner by the pool. Lots of excitement, enthusiasm and support from our Niner members for sure and we can’t wait!! You Ladies are awesome!

Next up, we are beginning to plan our Ladies Golf and Luncheon set for June 4, Friday! I along with Jill Winchester, Jan McGuire and Robin VanBuren have already started our plans so watch for more information as it begins to take shape and thank you ladies for being part of the planning committee this year. Our target date to send out the invite will be May 3rd.

Also, as you may well know, we welcomed Maggie Marks, Roberta Collier and Chris Portney as our new Niners bringing us to 77 members. If you want a new Roster, just ask Brigitte. I think Brigitte said it the best: "when it rains it pours". We are always excited when new Niners join us!

The Covid situation has certainly been minimized for our county and what a blessing the vaccinations have been to us all! Life is good ladies and getting better!

With optimistic hope for the country's full recovery, league tennis emerges from a long hibernation to invigorate the spring schedule.

Coming Events 6

Ladies team tennis will use a "scrimmage" label to play local clubs on Wednesday mornings.

Our A2 team had a scrimmage against Elings Park and tied 2-2. The winning pairs were Cynthia and Julia Frohling and Bess Scribner and Kathleen McLychok.

Our A team also scrimmaged against Elings Park and had a team win by partners Chelsea Sheffey and Angie Huff.

Men's Interclub starts its official season on May 20. Weekly home matches utilize five courts on Thursday evenings starting at 5pm Pickle Ball, ever increasing in popularity, features a competitive round robin and dinner on Saturday afternoon 3pm on May 22.

Tennis tip for May Reading your opponent's court position: Players playing very close to the net need to be lobbed. Players playing close to the service line should have balls played to their feet.

Captain Marcy Wimbish's B ladies team played the first competitive scrimmage at La Cumbre this year. Her team narrowly defeated Cathedral Oaks 3-1. Behind wins from the pairs of Sheri Copus/MJ Baumgartner, Marsha Roberson/Cia Fisher and Crissy Prichard/ Angela Maloney The Clubs' C team then hosted last years interclub top team , Tennis Club of Santa Barbara. Despite a series of tight sets and tie breakers , the La Cumbre team came up empty.

Club participants Crissy Prichard/Angela Maloney, Rachil Vincent/Lauren Brennan, Winnie Dunbar/Meichelle Arntz and Nana Talevi/Leslie Schneiderman all enjoyed the match.

Pickle Ball also made its 2021 debut with a huge seven court turn out in mid April. This event featured mixed and men's and women's doubles and welcomed the addition of Shannon Minne as the new Pickle Ball instructor.

Declan Braverman won the 14 and under boys Division singles UTR Tournament in the first Junior event of the season .

LCCC COMMUNICATIONS

After a long year of Covid-19, we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Activities and events are returning, tournaments are in full swing, and we are once again connecting with family and our La Cumbre friends.

T

he Board at La Cumbre wants to better connect with membership to ensure we continue to be the best full-service country club in the region. Like the TV ad says, “Can you hear me now?”. We’re listening. Of course, we will continue to keep you updated on all State and County health mandates regarding Covid-19.

Here are just some of the ways the Board, our GM and Brooke Atkins in Communications are working to connect: •

Board Communications: Bob Lowes, our Board President, has been championing better communications from the Board to its members, finding ways to simplify how members can express their opinions. He launched a regular update to membership highlighting critical Board decisions in the "Presidents Report" distributed by timely emails and posted on the website and in the Divot. Committees are providing more detailed reports as well. Look for more regular updates from the Board.

Member Feedback: There is a new "Member Feedback" tab on the website. Whether it's a compliment for a staff member, a thumbs-up for a recent tournament, or a suggestion for improving some aspect of the Club, we want to hear from you. We still have our suggestion box in the Clubhouse for those who prefer more traditional communication methods. For comments directed to the Board, there is also a new email address board@lacumbrecc.

Club Website: Brooke is currently incorporating feedback from real-world member experiences with the website. The website is one of the primary ways the Club now communicates to its members. Members utilize it to participate in events and activities

and make dining reservations. Our enhanced Divot has interactive features improving ordering and reservation efficiencies. It's a work in progress and Brooke welcomes any thoughts you might have about improving usability. Stay tuned for updates to the website, our Club app, and online member tutorials. Contact Brooke •

Surveys: The Board committee chairs are surveying members about possible improvements and enhanced services for each of their areas of responsibility. Thank you to those who participate-your feedback is critically important. The Pool, Tennis and Fitness Committee, chaired by Annetta Patrick, is analyzing feedback from its recent survey regarding the Fitness Center. They looked at types of classes, changes to the facility and layout, types of equipment, hours of operation, etc. The feedback will be shared with membership and will guide policies going forward.

Focus Groups: The Long-Range Planning Committee, co-chaired by Elaine Laustsen and Tom Carey, has conducted in-depth meetings with focus groups to get a more detailed understanding of what membership is looking for in its use of the Clubhouse and its related dining services. The results of these discussions will serve as a blueprint in considering improvements to the Clubhouse going forward.

As you encounter Board Members, Committee members, GM Eric or Brooke while at the Club, please let us know what valuable feedback you have. We’re looking forward to enjoying a fully operating Club and seeing everyone very soon.

YOGA FOR GOLFERS 3 POSES YOU SHOULD PRACTICE

I

n golf, every detail matters.

Having a slight advantage can make the difference between an enjoyable day on the course or a disappointing one. Golfers want to eliminate strokes as well as pain so they can continue playing the game they love for many years. Yoga can offer this advantage by increasing flexibility, range of motion in the joints and honing mental concentration.

"When I started practicing yoga, my skill was terrible and so was my golf swing," said Joe Hafera of the Titleist Performance Institute.

Like Hafera, many golfers complain of lower back pain from repeated spinal rotation from swinging the golf club during a game. Increasing flexibility in the spinal rotators is key to preventing injuries. Developing strength and length evenly will help counterbalance what happens on the course. The golf swing requires stability and flexibility of the hips and thoracic spine. A regular yoga practice can help address these issues.

Golf involves a great deal of physical skill and practice, but unless the mind is calm and focused, one won't be at the top of his game.

The emphasis on yogic breathing and mind-body connection in yoga is essential in helping athletes develop mental acuity, patience and concentration. Learning to be present in each moment on the course will result in a more fluid, enjoyable game.

Try these three poses before you hit the golf course to warm up your body and cool down your competitive mind.

Revolved Crescent Lunge

This pose is a rotation of the spine combined with an intense hip flexor stretch on the straight leg and a deep stretch of the outer hip of the bent leg. Stand in Mountain pose with your feet together. Lunge your right foot forward and make sure that your right knee is directly over your right ankle so that your right shin is perpendicular to the ground.

Balancing on the ball of the left foot, press the left leg straight. Draw your hands together at your heart, twist from the waist, and hook the left triceps on the outside of your right thigh, rotating to gaze up over your right shoulder. Make sure to keep your spine long and chest lifted off of our thigh. Keep pressing the palms together. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat on other side.

Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Lord of the Fishes Pose), variation

This twisting pose is excellent for creating balance between the left and the right sides of the body, for opening up the chest and torso, and

for opening up tight hips.

Sit tall with both legs extended in front of you. Make sure you are sitting evenly on your sitting bones.

If your hips are very tight, sit on a block or folded blanket until you can sit with a straight spine. Bend your left knee in and place your foot on the ground on the outside of your right thigh. Place your left hand on the ground behind your sitting bones, as close to the back as possible. Inhale and reach your right arm straight up. Exhale and twist to the left, rotating from the waist.

Place your elbow on the outside of the left quadriceps and gaze out over your left shoulder. Hold for one minute and switch sides.

This pose is excellent for improving your core strength, balance and coordination.

Bird Dog or Kneeling Balance

Start on your hands and knees.

Your hands should be directly beneath your shoulders. Spread the fingers, pressing into the thumb and index finger to avoid sinking into your wrists. Your knees should be positioned directly beneath your hips. Draw the navel into the spine and keep your back flat. Extend your left arm straight out in front of you as you simultaneously extend your right leg behind you. Hold for two full breaths and return to center.

Repeat on the opposite side. Do ten repetitions on each side.

The Sta. Rita Hills American Viticulture Appellation is located on California’s Central Coast in Santa Barbara County. The Pacific Ocean’s marine layer and afternoon ocean breezes traverse the coastal valley corridors between the Purisima Hills and the Santa Rosa Hills, creating the perfect environment for growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other cool climate wine grape varieties.

Ingredients:

Cooking spray 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled, plus more for work surface 1/2 c. granulated sugar 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 c. (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces

1 large egg yolk 2 tbsp. whole milk Confectioners' sugar, for dusting 1 c. lemon curd or fruit jam

Preparation: 1. Lightly grease 2 mini muffin pans. Pulse flour, sugar, and salt in a food processor until combined, 4 to 5 times. Add butter and pulse until mixture looks like wet sand, 8 to 10 times. Add egg yolk and milk; process until dough begins to form a ball around the blade, 5 to 20 seconds.

Aromas of oak, Meyer lemon and grapefruit pith on the nose. On the palate the wine is medium bodied with f lavors of zesty lemon custard and crisp apples. The oak f lavors are well-integrated and the bright acidity provides a satisfying and lingering finish.

Suggested pairings with this elegant and wellbalanced Chardonnay are a simple fettuccine alfredo with grilled prawns, lobster risotto and roasted chicken with herbed potatoes. with a huge range of foods.

2. On a floured work surface, roll dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out 12 flowers using a 3 1/2-inch scallop-shaped flower cookie cutter, rerolling scraps as needed. Carefully press flowers into prepared pans, alternating every other cup. Lightly press petals onto surface of pan to flatten. Prick bottom of dough with a fork. Refrigerate for 1 hour.

3. Preheat oven to 350°F. Bake until edges are lightly golden brown, 14 to 16 minutes. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack.

Work on the 13th Hole

S

tarting next week, the maintenance crew will build a putting green and short-cut Kikuyu grass nursey. I've wanted to do this for a long time. This area in the past was used for harvesting rough-height Kikuyu grass to fix damaged areas or use for projects.

We will build the putting green nursery to USGA specifications. It will consist of drains, gravels, and a top greens mix of sand and peat moss. We will then harvest plugs from the greens and use them to grow in the nursery, producing after about two seasons a surface the same as the Poa Annua and Bent Grass mix we have on the golf course greens. Both areas will be approximately 4,000 sq. ft. each.

This nursery is each golf course's turf, and the way it is maintained is unique, especially putting greens. There is no way to purchase any sod that would match the golf course commercially. In the future, when maintenance addresses sandblasting from bunkers or greens changing shape due to mowing and Kikuyu encroachment, they can be approached, and this sod used for this work.

Making the repairs heal in and have the same characteristics as the surrounding green faster.

With this nursery and the 13th island green, the club will have about 7,000 sq. ft. of putting greens grade sod at its disposal or about 1.5 golf course greens of our type and design.
