UPDATE FROM THE CLUB

RECLAIMED WATER After many years of negotiations, delays, and hard work, reclaimed water from the City of Santa Barbara's El Estero Water Resource Center on Yanonali Street is flowing into La Cumbre Country Club's golf course irrigation system. The terms of our contract with La Cumbre Mutual Water Company provide up to 100 acre-feet of recycled water per year to La Cumbre Country Club for 25 years beginning March 1, 2022, with possible annual one-year extensions thereafter.

At a ceremony on March 1, 2022 to get the Reclaimed Water flowing, held at the Club's water facility off the 15th fairway, with officials from the City of Santa Barbara and La Cumbre Mutual Water Company Club President, Russell Werner commented: "La Cumbre Country Club has been working for many years on a multi-phase approach to reducing its usage of water on its golf course, under the direction of Wayne Mills, Golf Course Superintendant. The Club has already taken 14 acres of land out of irrigation, converting that land into pollinator sanctuaries or wildlife corridors and drought-tolerant natives planting areas. The Club's financial commitment to responsible water usage now extends to this major investment in bringing Reclaimed Water from the City's El Estero Water Resource Center through our valued association with La Cumbre Mutual Water Company. This investment will enable the Club to be able to replace potable water with Reclaimed Water for over 60% of our irrigation needs and with other sources, such as well water, up to 80% of our needs. This is a big win for the Club and for our Community."

Greetings Fellow Golfers!

Hard to believe we are already into March and St. Patrick’s Day is nearly upon us. Make sure to get out your green clothing ahead of time and make sure it still fits from last year.

The February Men’s Member/Guest Stag was contested on February 16th and the format was One-Two-Three Ball Point Par. In the All-Member Flight, the winning Gross team was Jeff Ris, Scott Vincent, Mike Nicolais, and Dave Barton with 32 points. Net winners were the team of Joel Baer, Jon Standring, Justin Dees, and Taylor Tatman with 53 points. Runners up in the Net competition were Larry Falberg, Lee Falberg, Dave Zubas and Peter deTagyos. In the Member-Guest Flight, Gross winners were Brad Daugherty, Mark Hedberg, Dave “Taz” Gronsky and Ken Gaston with 32 points. In the Net division, the winning team was Doug Katsev, Barry Fanaro, Jamie Kellner, and Len Rosenthal with 51 points. Runners up were Eric Sadler, Clay Hunt, Vito Bialla, and Taylor Miller with 48 points. Closest to the pin winners were Peter Parish on #5, Patrick Nielson on #7 (1’10”!), Brad Daugherty on #11, and Larry Falberg on #17.

Men’s Saturday Team Play wound up the season with a disappointing loss at windy and cold North Ranch Country Club. Our squad ended up with a 2-2 record and 4 points in the group. North Ranch ended up winning the group with a 2-1-1 record and 5 points, and will advance to the playoffs. All in all, it was a pretty decent season and kudos should go out to Taz Gronsky for taking on the Captain’s role this season. I can attest that it’s not an easy or fun job, and appreciate all of the work that Taz did to make it fun and competitive.

As some of you may know, the Golf Committee approved both the UCSB and City College’s Men’s teams to use our course for the spring semester. They will be playing regularly on weekday afternoons through May. If you happen to see any of the players out there, please say hello and make them feel welcome.

The 2022 Men’s Senior Club Championship will be held on Friday March 25th and Saturday March 26th. Entries are open to golf members age 55 and older. There will be both Gross and Net Divisions, as well as a Super Senior (age 70 and up) Gross competition. Sign-ups are available online or with the Golf Shop.

There have been a number of inquiries about sign-ups for the 2022 Los Amigos. Sign-ups are not yet available but you can expect an email announcement later this month.

You will find a communication from Men’s Handicap Chairman Rick Nightingale in this edition of the Divot. This was prompted by a recent rash of incorrect scores being posted or not being posted at all. You may find this hard to believe, but during multiple recent spot checks by the Committee it was determined that only 60%-70% of men are regularly posting scores.

There are USGA regulations regarding handicapping, and they must be followed. Please refer to Rick’s article for the proper procedures and ramifications of not following them.

And finally, my monthly reminder to please fix your ball marks on the greens and fill in your divots with sand. And by the way, walkers are not exempt from filling divots. Either take seed bottle with you, or borrow one from a cart of one of your playing partners. It’s not that hard. Bunker raking (let alone correct bunker raking) also continues to plague the club. I wound up in a footprint in the left greenside bunker on #10 a few days ago. I followed the footprints and deduced that it was a man and that it took him three shots to get out of the bunker. None of the footprints or divots were raked, and he somehow exited the bunker on the green side, leaving two giant footprints in the smooth area while getting out. This is completely unacceptable, and one of the worst examples I have seen at La Cumbre. I blame not only the perpetrator but also his playing companions for not holding him accountable. Again, this is not Muni, it is all of our responsibilities to take care of the course. If you don’t want to do that, maybe Muni is the place for you.

A Message from your Handicap Committee The Handicap Committee (Committee) of La Cumbre Country Club is responsible for (1) ensuring compliance with the obligations under the World Handicap System in accordance with the Rules of Handicapping and the USGA, and (2) ensuring that all men players/members have an opportunity to play or compete on an equal and fair basis with fellow players.

Women members (WGA) have a separate handicap committee.

The Committee will verify that acceptable scores are posted for handicap purposes and perform random score audits and review members scoring records. A score is acceptable for handicap purposes if the round has been played: In an authorized format of play over at least the minimum number of holes. For an 18-hole score to be acceptable, a minimum of 14 holes must be played. If a player plays more than 9 holes but fewer than 14, all surplus hole scores are disregarded, and a 9-hole acceptable score must be posted.

On a course with a current Course Rating and Slope Rating The male golfing members/players at La Cumbre also have responsibilities under the Rules of Handicapping (Rules).

A player is expected to: Act with integrity by following the Rules and to refrain from using, or circumventing, the Rules for the purpose of gaining an unfair advantage, Attempt to make the best score possible at each hole, Submit acceptable scores for handicap purposes as soon as possible after the round is completed and before midnight local time on the day the round was played, Submit acceptable scores to provide reasonable evidence of their demonstrated ability, Play by the Rules of Golf, and Certify the scores of fellow players.

Much progress has been made by our members in the posting of scores. Let’s all focus and strive for full compliance. The Handicap Committee encourages and respectfully requests that members post every acceptable score. In the event that a player’s acceptable score is not posted, the Handicap Committee has the authorization to post a penalty score for that player.

Members should turn in a scorecard for each round played. If the score is not an acceptable score, the reason should be indicated on the card. Score cards may be turned in at the Golf Shop, Men’s Grill or the drop box by the Patio Bar & Grill.

Like the show, I’m the stranger (under the kind wings of the Harden’s) invited to sit at an LCCC Holiday Dinner table with strangers, had the time of my life, and ended up with a handful of fabulous contacts. Fast forward to this reunion pic where my husband could finally meet the new band of friends I couldn’t stop raving about.

Now the guys have their own text thread, and our next dinner is in the works. How lucky are we to be a part of this special La Cumbre community? Hopefully this picture- tale will remind us to keep smiling during these trying times, and remember that we are amongst kind people in this Peak of the American Rivera. Take a chance, reach out and say hi: you never know the outcome unless you try. NINERS UPDATES

Greetings Niners!

February was an exciting month for the Niner's!

We had three holes in one: Karen Yonally, a new member in January, got an Ace on #11 the first time out with the Niners - what a way to begin! Marnie Pinkser dropped hers in the hole on #13 using her gap wedge, and Dottie Nelson showed off on #7 during our Valentine Scramble! Congratulations, Ladies! You are doing the Niner's proud!

And speaking of Valentine's Scramble, another great time was had by all, expertly planned as usual, by Karen Carey and Evan Colavincenzo.

They came up with a modified scramble in which the "Infamous Red Valentine's Ball" was played by a different person each hole as if playing in stroke play, while the other three team members played a scramble. The two scores were combined at the end of each hole the pressure was on for the person playing the red ball! Winners of the tournament were in first place with a 74.7 Stan Nelson and Jane Atwater with Matt and Roberta Collier.

Second place with a 74.8 (close!) were Ed and Joan Tomeo with Lenny and Nancy Rosenthal. Third place with a 76.7 was Marty and Deborah Lynch with David and Charlene Heinz. The field was a sea of red as everyone dressed in Valentine-inspired attire. The weather turned cold, but we had our "main squeeze" (or at least an extra sweater in the bag!) to keep us warm! Helping to stave off frost-bite were the bracing Valentine's Margaritas specially prepared and delivered by Janet and Evan Colavincenzo in the LoveMobile. Karen Carey and her helpers Deborah Lynch, Jill Winchester, Linda Gamble, and Robin Van Buren were responsible for the beautiful table decorations, which set a very festive mood, not to mention the "Valentine's Kiss" cocktail and red velvet cupcakes for dessert organized by Inger and Kaity. The delicious menu got kudos all around, perfectly prepared by Chef Eric, with recipes provided by Karen. A big thank-you to all of the dedicated staff who worked hard to make this Nine and Dine fun as always - there is a lot of effort involved, and it shows!

And speaking of the Nine and Dine tournaments, The Niners are always looking for single and/or married gentlemen golfers to partner with single Niners in our tournaments. Spouses of said gentlemen are always welcome to join the group for dinner following the tourney. So, gentlemen golfers, if you would care to lend your golfing good humor and skills to our collegial group, please let Karen Carey know by emailing her at karen@careykutay.com, and she will add your name to our special list of good sports.

Also, Niners, please be reminded that computer skills are not necessary to sign up for our Friday morning games. Just call the Pro Shop, and they will add you to the roster of players. Niners generally form casual groups once in front of the golf shop and tee off when ready, anywhere from 8:00 to 8:30.

Niners would like to extend a warm welcome to our newest members, Karen Yonally, Manal Hishmeh, and Sue Wilcox. Players of all abilities are invited to join The Niners. This was her 3rd lifetime hole in one.

Jim McDermott had a hole in one on Sunday February 20th, on hole #7 Jim used an 8-Iron from 151 yards to perform the feat.

Marnie Pinsker had a hole in one on February 18 with the Nine Holers'.

Marnie used a gap wedge for the 77-yard shot from the green tee on the 13th hole at La Cumbre.

A Message From Nancy Falberg Team La Cumbre battled for the lnterclub trophy, but Valley proved to be the stronger team and won both gross and net for 2022. Thanks to all who played and to Captains Joan Tomeo and Alison Hedge. Every­one had a good time and is now ready for SCGA Gold Coast team play beginning in March.

Congratulations to Tracy Jenkins the February WGA Ace Day winner with a net 69! Karen Carey, Nancy Falberg, Gaile Haslem and Marnie Pinsker are tied for Putting Queen with 27 putts.

Update from the Courts The first signs of spring are all around us in beautiful Santa Barbara, and we are all excited for longer and brighter days with more time on the courts! February was a strong month for LC tennis, with one of the highlights being our first Valentine's Day Round Robin and mixer. We loved hosting a mixed doubles event and hope it helped to remind everyone how fun mixed doubles can be. We look forward to seeing more mixed doubles played at LC! Our LC teams had another great month, with our Ladies Interclub Teams looking to end their seasons on a high note. The A and C Team in second place, chasing their rivals for a first-place finish. Our A2s are holding on to a narrow lead for first.

Looking forward to March, Junior Team Tennis is starting mid-month. Matches will be played on Saturday afternoons. Sign-ups will occur in the pro shop, where we also will be taking registration for our swim, golf, and tennis camps this summer.

The sign-in sheet determines court availability. If you haven't signed in, you may be bumped due to a lack of start time. Singles may play for 1 hour and doubles for an hour and a half when a member is waiting.

Tennis Tip A high-quality serve gives a tennis player confidence to play their best tennis game. We see that most club players learn to hit one particular serve, flat, slice, or topspin or kick serve, and after having success, they neglect to learn the different spin serves. Each kind compliments each other and opens up different strategic patterns. You continue to work on your serve experiment with spins that change pace and placement. Your opponents will be caught off guard the next time you serve them a curveball.

The A2 LC ladies kept pace in a close title race. Their first match of the month was a convincing 4-0 home victory over Ojai Valley.

Nanette Giordano / Kerry Gidney, Dawn Bokman / Cynthia Frohling, Kathleen McLychok / Shelley Fogg, and Kelly Jensen / Bess Scribner won their matches.

In a showdown between 1st and 2nd place front runners. LC met a strong Pierpont squad. Dawn Bokman and Cynthia Frohling got LC off to a great start winning their match in straight sets, followed by Bess Scribner and Kelly Jensen. The last two games came down to close 3rd sets, but LC came up short, and the match was split 2-2.

La Cumbre B team started the month with a strong victory over the Polo B team. Teams of Lauren Katz / Melissa Katzenstein, Felisa Manion / Annetta Patrick, Carey Zimmerman / Linleigh Richter, and Angela Moloney / Lauren Brennan all came up victorious in a clean 4-0 sweep.

The second match saw the ladies go down 0-4 to co-leaders at 16 Santa Barbara Tennis Club. Each match was closely fought, and the B team showed they could compete with the league's best.

Our second-placed C team ladies were looking for a solid start to the month to catch league leaders Alisal. They got what they were looking for with a 4-0 clean sweep versus Bacara. Wins came from the teams of Crissy Prichard / Lauren Brennan, Angela Moloney / Michelle Arntz, Cristy Pugh / Leslie Schneiderman, and Winnie Dunbar / Christy Janka. Next was a tight 2-2 split against Pierpont C team. Crissy Prichard / Lauren Brennan and Angela Maloney / Cristy Pugh won their matches in straight sets. The C team continues to improve and is looking to finish the season strong.

Bob Niehaus and Ron Ungerer were the stand-out performers for LC winning 2/3 matches. Unfortunately, the team fell 3-6, but it was great to have the guys back competing again.

CAN MEDITATION MAKE YOU A BETTER GOLFER? YES . . . EVENTUALLY An experiment with three golfers revealed the practice can make a difference.

Just not the one you might expect A few months ago Golf Digest set out to answer a question almost as old as the game itself: does alcohol make you play better, or worse? The experiment with three too-eager participants, was illuminating, comical, and fairly conclusive: a little bit of “swing oil” has some residual benefits owing to a decrease in tension and inhibition. Too much, however, leads to deteriorating focus and coordination, and then you just stop caring about advancing the ball at all.

That brings us to our recent experiment exploring the effects of meditation, structured like the first two, but also plenty unique. Here, too, we submitted three golfers of varying playing ability to a series of golf tests while interspersing the influence of an outside element—beers and tokes became 15 minutes of meditation. The difference is that while meditation does induce some immediate physiological effects and boasts several longterm health benefits, we’re still talking about a rather nuanced exercise that is difficult to quantify. And if you really wanted to measure it well, best to do it over a few months instead of a couple of hours.

So in terms of how a few minutes of meditation a day can calm the mind and harness focus, I was already sold. What I hadn’t explored, and what we sought to discover that day, was how it might affect one’s performance on the golf course. Plus, we saw it as an opportunity to debunk misconceptions about meditation — what exactly it is, what you do, and why it might mesh well with the mental and emotional demands of golf.

The day was broken into segments of three different golf challenges—driving for distance, approach shot accuracy, and putting— followed by brief sessions with meditation teacher Jonni Pollard.

Among Pollard’s central arguments is that for all our technological progress, the human body has remained virtually unchanged from man’s earliest days fending off regular physical threats, which is why we process stress the same whether it’s an unpleasant email or a bear attack. This disconnect between how we live now, and the biological constraints of our bodies and brains, can explain why we often feel scattered so much of the time, and why even the mundane stresses of everyday life can elicit profound physical reactions.

“This is the little glitch in our system,” Pollard said.

“We are entrenched in a dysfunctional state of defensive living because the way we’re living now is so far removed from how we’ve biologically evolved.”

What does this have to do with our ability to hit a drive in the fairway? Plenty, actually, because the same forces that leave us feeling frequently disjointed also factor into our performance on the course.

Almost every golfer has to negotiate the chasm between the shots he’s capable of producing, and the those he actually hits. We’re too quick, we’re too distracted, we’re worried about the pond on the left—when the result falls short of our potential, it often emanates from somewhere between the ears. By contrast think about the time you mindlessly hit a shot on the range and it soars perfectly off the clubface; or when you rake in a conceded putt from afar without even trying, and it rolls straight into the hole. It’s precisely because you “weren’t thinking” that it worked out so well.

This, Pollard said, this is where meditation can make a difference.

So if you’re asking, no, I don’t think you can measure the efficacy of mediation by saying it will drop this number of strokes from your score. But what I have noticed is that it can work to flush out our worst instincts—both on the course and everywhere else. I, for one, need all the help I can get.

MEMBER BURGER OF THE MONTH Each month the Patio Grill will feature a member-created burger. The selected burger will be featured in The Divot and on the menu for that month. The member will have their name printed on the menu, their picture featured in The Divot, and receive one burger on the house each week for that month (member must be present to collect.) Creativity is encouraged! Think outside the bun with fish, vegetarian, lettuce wrap… the world is your burger! Submit your creation here.

MEET CHEF CARL SANTIAGO PATIO & GRILL KITCHEN MANAGER Since September, Carl has been with the club, and his creativity is behind the new Patio Grill menu. Carl has run several kitchens, an industry veteran of over ten years, including Route 246 at the Chumash Casino. He is full of fresh ideas that he can’t wait to share with the membership and is happy to join the La Cumbre Country Club family.
