President's Special Report Dear Members, Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to our new Emeritus Class (232/32).

Additionally, there was an important discussion at the May 26th Board meeting regarding staffing, capital, clubhouse renovation, funding issues and opportunities that I wanted you to be aware of and have the opportunity to provide feedback (board@ lacumbrecc.org) or reach out to board members or Eric if you have questions.

Staffing It is not an exaggeration to say we are now experiencing a real enormous challenge in finding new employees to fill open positions in food and beverage (F&B) operations. Chef Eric is doing his own sous-chef'ing, GM Eric and Josh are literally waiting tables and bussing and serving at events, which are picking up rapidly. We are relying on students to fill in vs. permanent staff. The offers we have made are often turned down due to dramatic wage and incentive competition from other clubs or restaurants—clearly an unsustainable situation.

The Board decided to provide additional financial resources to Eric to compete for F&B positions and hire an F&B Manager.

The Board voted to increase the service charge to 20% from the current 18% to line with other clubs in the area.

Clubhouse/Capital/Reserves We all are aware of significant incremental capital expenses related to updating and deferred maintenance of the clubhouse. While working aggressively on the plans, the options and preliminary costs will not be available for a couple of months and will be shared with the membership as soon as available. There are other deferred maintenance issues; the most

notable being the parking lot and irrigation system for the golf course. These expenses are incremental to the costs of implementing the recycled water program for our course.

The current waitlist for regular equity memberships provides a unique opportunity for the Club to build our reserves to get ahead of these anticipated capital expenditures. The By-Laws authorize the Board to increase its membership from its current regular equity 351 members to 400, at its discretion. The Board is considering authorizing up to 10 additional memberships from "treasury certificates," with five of those ten being available now. The sale of the remaining five treasury certificates would be re-evaluated depending on how normal regular and Emeritus memberships sales play out vs. demand. The total capital revenue to the club would be approximately $1.8 million for ten treasury sales, given the minimum sales price. All sales would go into a segregated capital reserve account.

We do recognize that there are a number of concerns that surround increasing our equity memberships, but we have a very small Club by any standard, our golf course usage is returning to normal, we do have a unique opportunity, we are all adverse to assessments or excessive debt, and new shares would increase every member's financial equity.

Finally, let me reassure you that the Club, for all that has occurred in this last year, is in a strong financial position and we would like very much to keep it that way. We also firmly believe that the renovation of the clubhouse will maintain the appeal of La Cumbre as a premier Club for the foreseeable future.

Jim and Lauren live near La Cumbre with their two children, Jack (5) and Josephine (3). Jim is originally from the Seattle area. He moved to Santa Barbara in 2006 to work for a technology company. Lauren is in financial planning and analysis.

New Faces at the Club Dear Members, The current market condition has put us in a place of supply and demand. There are simply more jobs available than people are willing to work at this time. That said, we are asking members for their patience and acceptance of our prevailing limitations.

We strive to meet member expectations and satisfaction, but we will have to be flexible in planning our upcoming events to accommodate staffing needs. We understand that membership is excited to get back to "normal" and be back at the Club. We are too!

Please know that we are working hard to fill positions and train our staff. You will soon be seeing new faces around the Club - please give them a welcome hello and know that they are doing their best to make the La Cumbre experience the most enjoyable one possible.

Greetings Fellow Golfers!

First and foremost, the 2021 edition of the Los Amigos was contested on May 14th & 15th, and by all accounts was one of the most successful La Cumbre tournaments in recent memory! The greens were spectacular, the on course food and beverage delighted, and the closing dinner was exceptional.

Keeping with the friendly spirit of the Los Amigos, it was very gratifying to see so many folks mingling outside of their usual groups.

71 teams did battle in four flights, and when the dust settled the Overall Gross Champions (for the 4th year in a row!) were Jordan Scott & Glenn Carter, and the Overall Net Champions were Justin Anderson & Tom Orlando. Flight Winners were Greg Moss & Dave Barton (A Flight Gross), Brett Buschbaum & Aaron Gilles (A Flight Net), Brad Daugherty & Jerry Pimm (B Flight Net), Russ Richker & Alan Harden (C Flight Net), Jason Boyatt & Tom Adams (D Flight Net). Congratulations to all!

Day One Closest to the Pin winners were: Don Sabino on #7 (2’9”) and Alex McGeever on #17 (5’2”). Day Two winners were Bryan MacPhail on #5 (6’1”) and Randy Glick (4’8”). The pins were quite difficult both days, so all of these closies were pretty remarkable. Congratulations gents!

I would be remiss if I did not once again thank Evan & Ben in the Golf Shop, Wayne Mills, GM Eric, Chef Eric, F&B Manager Josh, Alex in the Snack Bar, Inger, and their respective teams. These double shotgun days required 12-15 hour days, and all of these folks did it with a smile. We are fortunate to have a staff so willing to take ownership in providing such a positive member experience.

The SCGA Senior Amateur was contested at La Cumbre on May 24th – 26th. The course held its own, and as usual much credit should be given to Wayne and his crew. I heard nothing but rave reviews about our club and course, and Jimmy Becker (who ran the tournament for the SCGA) told me that this is the first event he can remember where he did not receive a single complaint. Randy Haag of Orinda was the winner with an impressive 54-hole total of 203 (-10). Four-time defending champion Craig Davis of Chula Vista was second at 207 (-6), including an incredible back nine score of 29 on the final day! La Cumbre’s own Greg Moss finished in a very respectable tie for 22nd place at +9. Great job Greg!

Moving on to other topics… How often have you looked around the club and seen dress code violations that rub you the wrong way? Or seen someone drive a cart driving right up to the edge of a green? My suspicion is that it has happened to all of us. The next question is what should you do about it? Do you call the Golf Shop? Do you say something directly to the offender? The most effective way would be to say something yourself, but most of us are uncomfortable doing so. Part of the responsibility of the Golf Committee is to enforce the club golf rules. If you see a violation, please report it to the Golf Shop (they can also help you identify the offender) or report it directly to the Golf Committee. My email address is listed below, and I can assure you that we will handle the matter for you directly and discreetly.

On the subject of club rules, I have touched on some of these things before, but they are worth repeating:

The first Men’s Member/Guest Stag Day in over a year will be held on Wednesday June 16th. Sign up is available online or in the Golf Shop.

After a one year hiatus due to COVID, The Chase will be returning in 2021 and will be held September 23rd-25th. The Chase Member/Guest is the premier event of the year, and this year will be no different, so grab a partner and save the date on your calendar. Sign up is currently available online or in the Golf Shop.

Pace of Play Etiquette – If a faster group comes up behind you, please be aware, communicate, and handle it like civilized adults. There is no need for hitting into another group or a hostile confrontation. We are all members of the same club, please be respectful of one another.

-Gentlemen’s shirts must be tucked in on the golf course at all times. The “golf course” is defined as any area where you might have a club in your hand. This includes the course, practice chipping and putting greens, as well as the driving range.

- Members are responsible for guest behavior and adherence to all club rules and can be disciplined for guest violations, including dress code.

- All groups must check in with the Golf Shop before play. This especially holds true for groups that include guests, as their names need to be recorded.

WGA Congratulations to Rita lewis our May Ace Day winner with a net 67! 2021 Putting Queens remain Chris Portney and Marjorie Geis with 28 putts.

Congratulations to La Cumbre's Womens Golf Team for win­ning both gross and net in the 2021 Gold Coast/SCGA team play! Per SCGA rules, the team must play as net winners in the playoff matches. As runner up, Birnam will play as Gold Coast gross winner for our section.

Upcoming Golf Events Thursday, June 3rd: Women’s Guest Day will again begin on the first Thursday of the month. Guest Days use an 8:30 AM shotgun start which allows for other Member play at approximately 11:00 AM of the 1st tee.

Wednesday, June 16th: Men’s Stag Days will begin again using a 12:45 PM shotgun start. Men’s Stags include an optional lunch, golf and dinner. The golf course will be unavailable after 12:45 PM. Monday through Thursday, June 21st through June 24th: The golf course will be closed for fairway thatching and greens aeration. There may be additional maintenance projects during this time as well. The practice range will be open most of the time however if there is a project underway that would effect the range it may experience intermittent closure.

Sunday, June 27th: This will be the first day of the 2021 Couples’ July 4th Eclectic golf tournament using a 1:00 PM shotgun start.

Thursday, July 1st: This is the first Thursday of July which is reserved for Women’s Guest Day. Guest Days use an 8:30 AM shotgun with the 1st tee becoming available for Member play at approximately 11:00 AM. Sunday, July 4th: Starting times will be available beginning at 7:00 AM. Also note that this is the 2nd day of the Couples’ July 4th Eclectic golf tournament using a 1:00 PM shotgun.

June 3 will be our first Guest Day of 2021.

Maggie Marks, Guest Day Chair, reports that signups are light so far. So, ask a guest and join the fun.

WGA women gathered early last Tuesday to thank and wish Victor Rea good fortune in his new job. Victor, for 19 years, has been a wonderful help to all the WGA. We will miss him.

Updates from the Court The La Cumbre Country Club tennis program enters June full of optimism and promise. Men's Interclub league is in full stride, the popular Golf/Swim/ Tennis camp for juniors begins and ladies league tennis participants continue to practice and improve.

Coming Events Two headliners in June: • Ladies fast feet interchanging partner doubles on June 16.

• Pickleball mixer and dinner at the patio bar and grill June 26.

The ladies "Fast Feet" competition uses a Wednesday morning time slot to invite ladies interclub players from all four leagues to battle in a round robin format.

A new pair of K-Swiss shoes from the club's tennis shop awaits the top game scorer.

The Saturday afternoon Pickleball mixer features a competitive format with timed matches and multiple court movement.

Wednesday mornings will continue to be dominated by ladies interclub scrimmages and practices.

Pickleball Court #6 is a multi use court: tennis and pickleball.

The newly painted lines make this dual purpose more effective. Pickleball courts can be reserved by calling the tennis pro shop.

Court Reminders 1. Members are encouraged to now use the ball machine on court #5 freeing court #6 for Pickleball use.

THIS IS HOW BEING DEHYDRATED IMPACTS YOUR WORKOUTS Skimping on H2O can alter your performance in a few ways.

Chances are, you’ve been and felt dehydrated at some point in your life. Low energy, headache, and dry mouth are all common symptoms of mild dehydration, which is usually not dangerous— it’s most likely just going to make you feel a little uncomfortable until you drink more water to fix it. But when it comes to your workouts, being mildly to moderately dehydrated can negatively impact your performance in a few ways that you might not even realize.

Of course, the effects are much more serious for an elite athlete than an everyday exerciser, Douglas Casa, Ph.D., chief executive officer of the Korey Stringer Institute and research associate in the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut, tells SELF. “The difference between first and tenth place is seconds. For a regular person, that difference is not as big of a deal. For an elite athlete, it could be their livelihood.”

Still, if you’re trying to shave some time off your next race, or want to feel your best during a workout (who doesn’t?), making sure you’re properly hydrated can help.

Here’s how being a little dehydrated can impact your workouts, and what you can do to fix it.

Our cells need water to synthesize energy. That’s especially important if you get through a tough workout.

The basic form of energy our muscles need to function is called adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. When we exercise, our bodies work to convert nutrients like carbohydrates and fat into ATP through both anaerobic (without oxygen) and aerobic (with oxygen) processes. We can only store a tiny amount of ATP in our cells, so our bodies are constantly synthesizing more to continue fueling our every movement. When you’re working out, the amount of energy your muscles needs increases, so synthesizing ATP is even more important.

While the food we eat is what’s broken down and converted to usable ATP, the process can’t happen without water, Greg Wells, Ph.D., assistant professor of kinesiology at the University of Toronto and author of The Ripple Effect: Eat, Sleep, Move and Think Better, tells SELF. One of the main systems in our bodies that creates ATP is called the citric acid cycle, or Kreb’s cycle. “If you’re dehydrated, the Kreb’s cycle cannot work properly to create energy,” Wells says. This can leave you feeling tired and fatigued (during your workout and in daily life).

When you have less fluid in your body, your heart has to work even harder to pump blood.

This means, ultimately, that you may feel like your cardiovascular system is working even harder (i.e. higher heart rate) than it should be. A workout that shouldn’t feel so intense has your heart pounding.

Here’s why: “Your body needs some fluid to keep blood volume up to function,” exercise physiologist Mike T. Nelson, Ph.D., C.S.C.S., tells SELF. “Blood volume, which drives all pressure in the body, is primarily fluid based. If we start losing enough fluid, cardiac function is going to go awry.” When your blood volume drops, your heart has to beat faster to try and circulate the same amount of blood throughout your body.

Dehydration can also make it harder for you to regulate your body temperature.

When we exercise, several areas of our body fight for fluid, Casa says. “The skin is trying to cool the body down, and it needs fluid to sweat. Muscles need blood to carry them oxygen and nutrients and also remove waste products. And the heart needs blood to maintain cardiac output,” Casa explains.

If you’re dehydrated and your blood volume is reduced, it can’t meet all of these demands—which means your natural cooling mechanism may not work as well as it should.

The good news is that staying optimally hydrated doesn’t have to require any fancy calculations.

Summer Strawberry Shortcake Ingredients:

6 SERVINGS

SHORTCAKES 2 hard-boiled egg yolks 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons semolina flour or fine-grind cornmeal 1 tablespoon bakaing powder ¼ teaspoon kosher salt

3 tbs. granulated sugar 6 tbs. chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces 2/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons heavy cream Sanding or granulated sugar (for sprinkling)

ASSEMBLY 1½ lb strawberries, halved ¼ cup granulated sugar 1 tsp. finely grated lemon zest Kosher salt

2 tsp. fresh lemon juice 1 cup heavy cream 2 tbs. powdered sugar ½ vanilla bean, halved lengthwise

Preparation Shortcakes: Step 1 - Pulse egg yolks, both flours, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar in a food processor to combine. Add butter and pulse until only pea-size pieces remain. Drizzle in ⅔ cup cream, then pulse 2–3 times to barely incorporate. Transfer dough to a work surface and gently fold on top of itself several times just to bring it together and work in any dry spots.

Step 2 - Using a 2-oz. ice cream scoop, make 6 balls and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Do not flatten. (Or measure out mounded scoops with a ¼-cup measuring cup.) Cover and chill until cold, 20–25 minutes.

Step 3 - Preheat oven to 350°. Brush tops of shortcakes with remaining 2 Tbsp. cream and sprinkle with sanding sugar. Bake until golden and sides are firm to the touch, 28–32 minutes. Let cool.

Step 4 - Do Ahead: Shortcakes can be baked 1 day ahead. Store airtight at room temperature. Reheat before serving.

Assembly:

Step 5 - Toss strawberries, granulated sugar, lemon zest, and a pinch of salt in a medium bowl to combine. Transfer half of strawberries to a large saucepan and add 1 Tbsp. water; let remaining strawberries macerate while you bring strawberries in saucepan to a gentle simmer over medium-low. Cook, stirring occasionally and reducing heat if needed to keep at a low simmer, until strawberries are starting to break down and become jammy and liquid is syrupy, 12–18 minutes. Let cool, then stir in 1 tsp. lemon juice. Stir remaining 1 tsp. lemon juice into macerated strawberries.

Step 6 - Combine heavy cream, powdered sugar, and a pinch of salt in a medium bowl. Scrape in seeds from vanilla bean; reserve pod for another use. Beat cream until soft peaks form.

Step 7 - Split shortcakes and divide strawberry compote, macerated strawberries, and whipped cream among bottoms. Close with shortcake tops.

THE COURSE

SOCIAL WALL From Wayne Mills

Course Updates

Dear Members - Just some updates on areas you see us working while playing your rounds, Holes: Six & Seven The materials you see in this area are for the recycled water project. They are coming slowly due to Covid-19 and the freezes in Texas, plus a lack of drivers. This slows the production of PVC and other materials, so they are in short supply. But a large portion of what we need is on-site now.

We will start work on the 21st of June, with the pipe going in the ground by July with a completion time of October.

There is a portion of piping in the street from Val Verde to the sixth hole. Again, we are waiting on the purple pipe for this section. We expect this to be delivered in August. So, both sides should be going in the ground at the same time.

Hole 13 The putting green nursery is almost completed. We have covered it with plastic to keep the wind from blowing in weed seeds. Next week we will complete the drainage and smoothing into the edge of the surrounding grade. Then we will aerate the putting green, chipping green, and the 13th island green to use those plugs to propagate the nursery green. This will produce a turf that is just like all other greens on the course. In the future, any work on greens or the surroundings will be back in play quickly with the same characteristics as the rest of the course.

I want to write more, but I have to go another delivery just showed up. :) I’ll leave you with this picture of our first banded bluebirds on our course in 2021.
