gm update from Adam Zubek, GM/COO Dear Members, The year has started with a flurry of activity, and it is exciting to imagine where things will stand at the end of 2024. On January 29th, we officially broke ground on the Patio Bar & Grill project. For regular updates and insights into all project activities, visit our weekly La Cumbre Campus Revitalization Updates, released every Friday (click here). Dining services are now available in the Clubhouse seven days a week (click here for details). And for those in need of a caffeine fix, daily we're serving complementary coffee on the terrace and at the golf shop from 8-11 am and you’ll find pastries and fresh fruit for grab and go. Continuing with our open communication from the Board, we invite you to peruse this month's board brief. In addition, President Alan Harden writes about 2024 committees, Mike Nicolais updates us on the Bridge Bond, and John Blair provides an update on our Superintendent Search and Golf Course Projects. Best regards,
Adam Zubek GM/COO

president’s report I am honored and excited to have been appointed as President for 2024, and I look forward to the year with great optimism. The 2024 Board We have an outstanding board this year with three new board members who bring fresh perspectives and expertise to our team: Tracy Jenkins - Membership Committee, Mike Nicolais Finance Committee, Ken Badish - Communications Committee. They join Jim Buttimer - Membership Experience Committee, John Blair - Greens Committee, Henning Thorsen and Chris Portney - Co- Chairs of Golf Committee; and Ron Busch - Board Liaison PBG & Clubhouse Renovation Committee; and Steve Pinsker - Board Advisor. A special thanks goes to Past President Russ Werner - Chair of the Nomination Committee and for his general advice and friendship. I would also like to thank Annetta Patrick and Rob Brown who leave the board this year having served their term. Their dedication and contributions have been greatly appreciated. Committees The committee members have been diligently selected, and I would like to personally thank each of the volunteers for their commitment to serving. The work will begin soon, and I anticipate a busy and fruitful year ahead. We received an overwhelming response from members interested in contributing, and while we couldn't accommodate everyone, I want to express my gratitude to all who offered their time and expertise.
THE DIVOT | FROM THE BOARD
A reinstituted Long Range Planning Committee, led by Greg Moss, will focus on shaping the future of the campus, as well as more immediately establishing a ‘North Star’ for the club, which will define a clear and overarching goal, purpose and vision that guides all decisions, strategies and provides focus. Keep an eye out for your opportunity to be involved in this. We are also forming a Traditions and Standards Committee. Reporting to the board, the committee will be headed by Henning Thorsen and will include John Blair and Chris Portney. This committee will work alongside the chairs of other committees and Adam and his team to uphold and evolve our club’s traditions, standards, and etiquette. By maintaining these values, we can continue to provide the best country club experience and foster a wonderful social community for all members. In addition, we have initiated a Racquets Renovation Committee, led by Jim Buttimer, ahead of the court project commencing this year. This joins the Golf Course Renovation Committee led by John Blair and the Clubhouse / Patio Bar and Grill Renovation Committee led by Tom Oschner. Approximately 60 members are volunteering among all of the committees, representing a diversity of tenure at the club. Thereby ensuring that we have a blend of perspectives that can significantly enrich the work and outcome. The Four Projects “Campus Revitalization Plan” January 2024 to April 2026. PBG It was wonderful to receive the PBG permits over the holidays (a little earlier than we expected!) and to be able to finalize agreements and commence work late in January with a scheduled end date in time for the July 4th weekend. It is great to have Schipper construction on site and commencing demo.
THE DIVOT | FROM THE BOARD
Racquets The new Racquets Renovation Committee has hit the ground running, holding several meetings and re-scoping this project. There has been overwhelming feedback from the Racquets community that cushioning on the courts is not just nice to have but a fundamental requirement. Budget constraints make this an issue of value engineering, which I am confident will be achieved. The permitting process for the Pickle Ball court is also proceeding well, and we are continuing to forecast commencing work later this year. Clubhouse Led by Tom Oschner, the Renovation committees’ work has continued without a pause over the holidays, and the forecast of 1 October commencement remains intact. Recently, presentations were given to various County agencies and review boards for preliminary and conceptual review. The meetings were a significant milestone and were passed very successfully. Thanks go to SEPPS (Planning and Permitting service), Anacapa (Architect), CJM (Landscape Architect), Post Hazeltine (Historian), and Tynan Group (Project Manager). Golf Course John Blair and the Golf Course renovation committee have been overseeing the detailed planning of this project run by Todd Eckenrode (Architect) and Wayne Mills, and it is going extremely well. The project team is now receiving hard bids for the proposed work, providing cost certainty. This work allows us to exercise an option to commence renovation of the Golf Course in the Spring of 2025 and finish in the Fall of 2025. Instead of the original planned schedule, commencing in the spring of 2026 and not due to be completed until the summer of 2028. Concurrently a communications program is being finalized to further inform and discuss with members. Mike Nicolais, Treasurer, recently wrote a note regarding the member Bridge Bond. It is worth reiterating that a successful members vote on the members’ Bridge Bond will be required to fund the 2025 golf course renovation. Should members not support the Members Bond the golf course renovation will revert to the original schedule of completion in Summer 2028.
THE DIVOT | FROM THE BOARD
I would like to thank Wayne Mills for all that he has done over the decades. He has overseen the Golf Course, and we are all delighted that has agreed to help us through the Golf Course renovation next year. I also wish to pass on the Board's congratulations to Wayne on receiving the President Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). In closing, it would be remiss of me not to thank Adam Zubek. He has worked incredibly hard over the six months he has been with us. By not only taking on the upgrading of our daily operations at the club, and everywhere we see signs of his touch and improvement. As well as successfully getting up to speed on all four of the projects, all of which have been in the planning stage for many years.
Wayne and Adam are at the GCSAA Conference and Trade Show in Phoenix, AZ. Wayne was presented with the President's Award for Environmental Stewardship.

treasurer’s report from Mike Nicolais Hello all, This year's Finance Committee comprises returning members Paul Portney, Sue Wilcox, Jason Spievak, Melissa Gough, Drew Simon, me, and new committee members Kevin Newman and Glenn Carter. I'm very thankful to this group for agreeing to serve this year as the next couple of years at the club will be the most active for this committee in years. Besides normal club operations, we have already begun the first of four major projects that will span the next 24+ months: the patio bar and grill, the racquet courts, the clubhouse, and the golf course project. A lot of information is forthcoming on these projects that will be disseminated by the Renovations Committee and the Golf Committee, including renderings and presentations. Currently the balance sheet of the club looks very strong, with nearly $13 million in cash and no debt. Of course, the cash will be rapidly depleted as we spend on these projects. I view the Finance Committee's role, among other things, to be a watchdog on the finances related to these projects and to offer suggestions to the Board on financing alternatives such as the Bridge Bond proposal, which I wrote about in Adam's last weekly club update. The budgeting for the club's operations for 2024 was the trickiest in years, as well debated assumptions about revenue and expenses had to be estimated regarding the closing of the patio bar and grill for five months and the closing of the clubhouse later this year. The monthly results will need to be scrutinized to make sure that our assumptions are accurate. The number of equity member transfers and other classes of memberships will be interesting to monitor as well. Inflation continues to be a major concern of mine.

treasurer’s report The 2023 audit is underway. We have a new audit firm that has extensive experience with other country clubs. We hope to be able to learn a few things of value as a result. 2023 ended with a small surplus from operations and transfer and initiation fees in excess of our expected budgeted amount. I'm willing to sit down with any member to discuss the club's finances. I plan to do a mid-year, in-person update for anyone interested in attending to give updates on the projects and club operations from a financial perspective. If you have concerns or criticisms, please come to me directly. I welcome it. Sincerely, Mike Nicolais

greens report from John Blair Most of you are aware that our award-winning Superintendent, Wayne Mills, announced his retirement a few weeks ago. Wayne has graciously agreed to remain on board as a consultant for our course renovation through 2025 after he retires from full-time duty on May 1. Wayne has transformed our golf course over the past 20-plus years into a beautifully sustainable reflection of our local environment. He has maintained top-level playing conditions despite having an aging infrastructure and has done it all with a smile and commitment to excellence for our membership. I think I can safely say that for past Green Committee Chairs and Members, working with Wayne Mills has been a highlight of our membership experience. Personally, I will miss my favorite text after every Board Meeting from Wayne: “Do we still have jobs?”. I laugh every time! We are well into the process of searching for Wayne’s successor and have a series of interviews coming up in February. The response has been quite robust, and we are confident we will find a candidate to steward La Cumbre in the years ahead. As Wayne explained his thinking for the timing of his retirement, “It makes sense to let the new Superintendent take control once the course reopens, and I can be here during the renovation to relay the nuances of La Cumbre.” The bidding process for the course renovation work has been completed, and our team, led by Wayne, is reviewing all of the bids and narrowing down the contractors to select winners. This process should be completed by the end of February. Moving the renovation work forward to the spring of 2025 will require we pass the “Bridge Bond” measure you have heard about in recent communications. As a reminder, the Bridge Bond does not require any additional assessments to members; it is simply a financing mechanism to pull the golf course work forward so we can complete the entire series of construction projects on campus in a tighter timeframe and not have years of disruption. Greens work during 2024 mainly consists of landscaping activities and some tee leveling. Lastly, I am happy to report that we have a full lake. Enjoy a fun year of golf! Fairways and Greens, John Blair and the Green Committee

NINERS NEWS
FROM JUNIE PREWITT NINERS DIVOT REPORTER
Niners began the New Year with a roster of 103 members! The Niners are a casual all-level group who play the back nine holes every Friday morning, beginning about 8:00. Casual groups are formed, and off we go! Coffee at the Snack Bar has become a tradition and is a good way to get to know more Niners. Second Fridays are guest days, and the last Friday of the month is a scramble, which everyone enjoys! To join The Niners, dues are $25 per year, and an application form can be found on the La Cumbre CC website under Golf Associations. Alternatively, you may contact Niner Chair Nancy Rosenthal nancyarosenthal@gmail.com or Communications Chair Linda Bialla lindabialla@gmail.com to begin your membership. Sign-ups for Friday games can be done on the website or by calling the Pro Shop. There will be six Nine & Dines and two Niner tournaments in 2023. Dates for these events can be found on the website, so please check it out and mark your calendars! Jill Winchester is responsible for the Nine & Dines, and separate committees will be organizing the two Niner tournaments. The New Year also starts a new Ringer Board located in the women's locker room, which will be maintained by Claudia Thorsen. The Ringer Game is a way to track improved scores on each hole throughout the year. Posting of scores will begin on the first Friday of February, but you can post your scores anytime after that if you play with another Niner. Scorecards must be signed, dated, and attested to by your playing partner and left in the green Ringer Game Folder next to the Ringer Board. Instructions for the game and posting scores are also there, along with the board, and at the end of the year, prizes will be given for the two most improved scores as well as the two lowest scores. Any questions can be addressed to Claudia Thorsen at clamoral@mac.com. It's a fun way to track your scores and see how much you are (or are not!) improving! The first Nine and Dine of 2024 is a Super Bowl theme, held on Sunday, February 4th, with a shotgun start at 2:30. Players are encouraged to wear their favorite football or sports attire or the colors of their favorite team. Pom-poms are good, too! See you there!

Handling Decision Fatigue If you have been following along with my articles over the months, you know I love to keep it real with you all and drop some truth bombs along the way. I have recently been experiencing some decision fatigue, and I figured we could talk about it for our article this month because I know I am not the only one who goes through it. Decision fatigue occurs when the quality of your decisions deteriorates after making many choices, leading to mental exhaustion and difficulty taking action. I personally relate to the latter and feel that once too many things build up, it becomes difficult to do what needs to be done, no matter how small. We are all human and will struggle with this throughout our lives, but I want to highlight a few strategies that I use that help tremendously. Prioritize and Plan: Start by identifying your most important tasks or decisions for the day. Prioritize them based on their urgency and importance. Breaking down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks can make them seem less overwhelming. Limit Choices: Reduce the number of decisions you need to make by establishing routines or pre-planning certain aspects of your day. For example, you can plan your meals for the week, establish a daily schedule, or choose your outfit the night before. Delegate Responsibilities: Delegate tasks whenever possible, especially those that don't require your direct involvement. Delegating frees up mental energy for more critical decisions and actions.
THE DIVOT | FITNESS
Take Breaks and Rest: Recognize when you're experiencing decision fatigue and give yourself permission to take breaks. Engage in activities that help you relax and recharge, such as meditation, exercise, or spending time in nature. This is a big one for me, and I highly encourage you to do the same. Taking a short walk outside is sometimes all you need! Limit Information Overload: In today's digital age, we're bombarded with information constantly. Limit exposure to unnecessary stimuli by setting boundaries on your use of technology and consuming only relevant information. Seek Support: Don't hesitate to seek advice or input from trusted colleagues, friends, or mentors when making important decisions. Sometimes, an outside perspective can offer valuable insights and alleviate decision-making pressure. These are some of the main strategies I use when I seem to be struggling the most. I am also not afraid to celebrate some miniwins along the way. Recognizing progress boosts motivation and reinforces positive habits! Give some of these methods a shot next time you are feeling overwhelmed, and let me know if they helped you be more successful in your decision-making processes. With love, Jarratt Rouse
