GM Update

from Adam Zubek, GM/COO Dear Members, It has been a beautiful fall, and we have enjoyed wonderful weather for all the activities we love at La Cumbre. As I adjust to the busy last quarter of 2023 at La Cumbre, I want to express my gratitude to my team for their outstanding work in delivering phenomenal events while continuously improving daily service standards. It feels like Labor Day was just a few days ago, and in the past two weeks, we celebrated Thanksgiving, which was a great success, along with a wonderful Holiday Social/member Open House. I’m told this was one of the best ever, so we have begun planning for 2024! There are several events over the Holiday Season, and I encourage you to use the club to celebrate with your friends and loved ones. Click here to reserve and for more information on events with available space. If you did not see the stand-alone communication on the 2024 cost of an Equity Membership and the dues changes, please take the time to read more here. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact me directly. To view November’s Board Brief, click here. The Annual Meeting will begin at 4:30pm on December 11th in the Clubhouse. An email with a link will be sent to members prior to the meeting. On behalf of the staff, I want to thank those members who generously contributed to our Employee Holiday Fund. This is an important aspect of the team’s compensation plan and a critical part of our effort to become an employer of choice. As we close out 2023, I would like to thank all members for welcoming me and my family to La Cumbre and Santa Barbara. When we made the decision to accept this opportunity in May, we knew the challenges of relocating and starting a new journey at a new club would be plentiful. As we close out the year, I could not be happier to be working with so many wonderful staff and members. I constantly remind myself what an honor it is to serve you as your GM/COO. Thank you for the opportunity, thank you for welcoming my family, and have a wonderful Hannukah and a very happy and healthy holiday season! Warmest wishes, Adam

THE GIFT OF BETTER FROM TRAVIS BREGMAN, PGA GOLF IN 2024 FIRST ASSISTANT GOLF PROFESSIONAL

Every year, we hope to see our golf games improve, but most golfers’ handicaps remain relatively consistent throughout their golf careers. It can be difficult to understand why we do not see more improvement when we have more experience, so what are we missing? There is always anecdotal evidence about how the short game is the separator between skill levels, and I want to put the myth to rest. Let’s examine the data to find out what a golfer needs to focus on to lower his handicap. There are four main segments that make up our golf games: Off the Tee (OTT), Approach (APP), Around the Green (ARG), and Putting (Putt). The chart below shows how much each area of the game contributes to lowering a golfer’s index by 5 strokes. At a quick glance, we can see the greatest percentages are consistently in the approach column, which means that almost 40% of a golfer’s improvement is due to better approaches into the green. After Approach is the Off the Tee category, which is about 30% of the improvement. Therefore, the long game is responsible for two-thirds of golfers’ improvement. This information is critical because it is imperative to focus our energy on the areas that will have the greatest impact when we have limited practice time. To wrap it all up with a nice bow, lowering our handicap requires practice to improve the different segments of our golf game. Improving each segment will undoubtedly yield the best results, but having a more targeted approach to practice can guarantee better results. To play the best golf in 2024, concentrate your practice time on your driving and approach game because it’s always easier to make a putt if you hit it closer to the hole!

Congratulations to John Blair for making an ace on November 25th on Hole 5! He used a 9 -iron from 135 yards from the white tees. It is his 5th career hole in one!

Niners News

Nine & Dine participants gathered in front of the pro shop on Sunday November 12th for their couples event of the year "A Night in Italy". Strains of Pavarotti, singing all his best Neapolitan songs, plus a bit of Rigoletto and Pagliacci, filled the air as golfers gathered to hear their instructions for the Step-Back Scramble. Of course, the bowl of spaghetti was not straightforward as participants used a strand of "pasta" as a unit of measure to move their ball once it was on the green. The pasta was actually three pieces of string, but the critical question was when to use the pasta? Once used, the strands couldn't be re-used, so the foursomes had to guess if each green placement was as bad as it was going to get, or would the next hole be worse? Would their best ball be 20 feet from the hole or 5 feet? One needed one's crystal ball, left over from the Halloween scramble . . . Celebrating their wins were: In first place by Jill & Andy Winchester with Sarah & Mike Paschke, second place Danielle & John McCaffrey with Joan & Ed Tomeo, third place Nancy & Len Rosenthal with Allie Banyattrakoonpan & David Zaniboni. Only .1 separated the fourth and fifth place winners, so it was almost a tie! Fourth place winners were Gaile & Dale Haslem with Leasha Barry & Dave Shrontz and fifth place winners were Helen & Ben Phillips with Marnie & Steve Pinsker. As part of the evening's entertainment the Mistress of Ceremonies, Jill Winchester, called on a crowd of unruly paparazzi, no doubt from "Oggi" or "Chi" Italian publications, who hurled questions at our local Italian La Cumbre celebrity, Evan Colavincenzo, who fielded them with his usual aplomb. A few of the very interesting facts uncovered by this group of aggressive reporters, determined to get "the scoop" were: 1.) Evan speaks fluent Croatian 2.) He is an expert tailor 3.) He has six grills and three lawnmowers 4.) He is an accomplished Italian chef and makes his own pasta 5.) He does his own plumbing, electrical work, and car maintenance, including oil & tire changing.

THE DIVOT | NINERS 6.) He used to be a fly-fishing guide in his "spare" time 7.) SBCC Foundation named a golf trophy after him that gets passed around like the PGA trophy 8.) When attending Westmont College, he initiated the Girls' Club gymnastics program that is still in operation today 9.) Also, as part of his degree at Westmont College he organized a Christmas play for the aspiring gymnastics students to perform for their parents (Vittorio de Sica, eat your heart out) 10.) He is a graduate of the PGA Business school 11.) In high school he earned All-State honors in basket ball and qualified individually for the California State Golf Tournament 12.) He played division one basketball and semi-pro baseball, still keeping in the swing of things by playing league softball with his friends of six decades. With flashbulbs popping, he modestly answered all of the shouted questions posed by the unruly paparazzi and the evening ended with a big round of applause. The reporters rushed off to send in their pictures and stories! Niners would like to extend a warm welcome to our 102nd member, Fiona Harden. The Niners are all about participating in inclusive, casual play, building friendships, and having fun. All members are invited to join regardless of skill level. Niners play the back nine every Friday morning, meeting in front of the pro shop, and teeing off shortly after 8:00 once casual groups are formed. Sign up online or call the pro shop to add you to the roster of players. Annual dues for The Niners are $25 and you may contact communications chair Linda Gamble at tlgamble1@cox.net or Niner Chair Deborah Lynch deborahlynch@cox.net if you would like to join.

Evan Colavincenzo and Jill Winchester . . . Poor Evan doesn't know what is coming next!

Evan is attempting to answer one of the questions posed by the crowd of intrepid reporters . . .

Tennis Tip of the Month: Mastering the High Loopy Balls on the Rise Building on last month's focus on handling high loopy balls, this month we delve deeper into the technique of taking these challenging shots on the rise. When confronted with a high-lofted ball, the instinct to move back is strong, but there's another effective approach. 1. Recognizing Pace and Depth: Understand that when a ball is hit with more pace and depth, taking two steps in and hitting the ball early off the bounce can be advantageous. Opt for this strategy instead of attempting to retreat behind the ball. 2. Shorter Backswing, Greater Control: Recognize that a shorter backswing is key when taking the ball on the rise. This minimizes the risk of mistiming the shot. 3. Full Commitment and Relaxation: To execute this technique successfully, commit fully to your acceleration. Maintain relaxation through your arm during the shot to enhance control. 4. Risk and Reward: Acknowledge the increased risk associated with timing the ball when taking it on the rise. Embrace the potential reward of utilizing the momentum of the bounces to drive the ball through the court, thereby seizing control and limiting your opponent's reaction time. By mastering the skill of taking high loopy balls on the rise, you not only reduce the risk of being pushed behind the baseline but also open up opportunities to dictate play and keep your opponent on the defensive. Remember, practice and patience are key as you integrate this technique into your game. Stay committed, stay focused, and enjoy the rewards of a well-executed shot.

PRESENCE OVER PRESENTS The holiday season is in full swing. Parties, events, dinners, travel, and family time seem to be never ending. Our stress is at an all-time high. With our minds running a million miles an hour it’s easy to forget the reason for the season. I believe this time of year is our reminder to surround ourselves with those that mean the most to us. Whether it’s the family you're born into or the one you choose, those people and relationships are what truly matter. Take this time to slow down and really connect with those you love. I am personally making it a point to set some time aside with every one of my family members to check in on a deeper level than we tend to default to. It is our time to build and strengthen our bonds, not time to continue to grow further apart through vague and shallow conversation. I saw a quote earlier today that said, “when I ask you how you are doing, I expect the long answer.” and it really resonated with me. I want to encourage you all to do the same this holiday season and really focus on the presence of it all, not just the presents! With love, Jarratt Rouse
