Lackland Elementary 6th grade Advancement Ceremony June 5, 2013 Congratulations to the sixth grade class. In a rousing ceremony students performed several songs and were given certificates that recognized their accomplishment completing their time as elementary students. Addressing the proud parents and family members were Mrs. Leija, Dr. Roper, and student Aubri San Nicolas. Each gave a terrific speech acknowledging the class and wishing them the best for their future. Top academic students Madelyn Pemberton and Andrew Mayo were given awards by Lackland Teacher Association representative and High School teacher Mr. Brian Knobloch. Congratulations Mrs. Torre, Mrs. Rigby, Mrs. Street and Mr. Cox for your dedication to this class. Special Thanks to Ms. Cara Coffey and all who made this a very unique and special occasion.

Above and Beyond Award Winners – Spring 2013

We are pleased to announce our Spring 2013 Above and Beyond award winners. Our school board president, Mr. Brian Miller, presented our Above and Beyond recipient with a “Certificate of Achievement” at the May 2013 school board meeting. Dr. Burnie Roper, Superintendent, commended them for their service, and reminded them about the accompany $200.00 stipend and reserved parking for the Fall 2013 semester. The Above and Beyond award winners are: Ms. Julie Mihalko and Mr. Ben Pease.

Julie Mihalko is our Spring 2013 Above and Beyond award winners in the Professional employee category. Besides teaching a second grade class, Julie is “a designated social butterfly” according to her nomination letter who “makes everyone feel included”. Ms. Mihalko provides a positive environment in her classroom and encourages others by setting an example for good instruction and caring about others. She supports her colleagues through active involvement and leadership in a professional teacher organization (ATPE). We are fortunate to have Julie Mihalko on our Lackland ISD team.

Ben Pease is our Spring 2013 Above and Beyond award winners in our auxiliary category. Mr. Pease is our district computer technician. He has filled in as our district network analyst for the last few months and “has proven that given any task in his field, will step right on in” as expressed in one of two nomination letters. Another recommendation letter states “he always greets you with a smile” and gets the job done. Ben is very capable and always willing to go the extra steps to support our teachers and staff with technical support. We are proud to have Ben Pease as part of our Lackland ISD team.

Thanks to all of the supervisors and co-workers who took the time to nominate these outstanding employees for going ‘Above and Beyond’ in providing a great instructional environment for our students.

Will McDowell Executive Director for Operations and Technology Committee Chair

The week of April 14th, I attended the Francis Hesselbein Leadership Program at the Air Force Academy. I was selected to participate along with nine other students from across XCEL the country, that are also involved in S2S programs. We went to the conference so that we could bring back ideas and leadership to our respective programs, and I plan on trying to improve the way we welcome new students. At the academy, we were taught by the cadets what they called “transformational leadership. Each day we learned about different parts of transformational leadership including problem solving, goal setting, communication, motivation, and other topics. We had fun learning these values through numerous activities that the cadets set up for us. We also received a tour of the Air Force Academy. I would recommend students in the future to apply for this program because it is an experience that you can use throughout your life. by Matt DelVecchio

StuCo would like to thank everyone who donated to the Oklahoma Tornado Relief Fund. Thanks to the generosity of Stacey Junior-Senior High School, we will be donating a grand total of $1,000.00. Thank you to all of the teachers and students and staff who contributed to the drive. We would especially like to thank Dr. Roper, Ms. Mickey, and Mrs. Rue for their contributions toward achieving our final total.

Fifth Grade Celebration

Page 7 of 15 June 7, 2013

The 5th graders have been working all year to memorize and increase their fluency on multiplication and division facts. For each fact they completed with 100% accuracy on a timed test, they earned a credit, accumulating points throughout the school year. Students then designed their own "debit cards" that their points were "banked on" to spend at the party held last Friday. They were able to “bank up to 29 credits. On May 31st, they celebrated their hard work with a party in the Eye-Max! Students were allowed to spend their earned points in the incentive store to buy prizes. All of 5th grade was treated to a movie with popcorn and water, which they enjoyed with their friends. Good job 5th grade, we are very proud of your hard work! It was a wonderful afternoon for both students and teachers as they celebrated their accomplishment this school year. Thank you to all who stopped by to congratulate the students, and thank you to the teachers, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Bragg, Ms. Esparza, Ms. Fohlmeister, Mrs. Fried, and Mrs. Mendoza, who supported the students all year.

Ms. Greeness’ 7th grade students completed their final projects in health. They had to make human bodies covering the systems that they discussed in class. These students did a fantastic job.

ATTENTION PARENTS: Please come to the clinic to pick up any medicines (prescribed and over-the-counter) and/or inhalers by the end of the school day on Thursday, June 6th. No medicines are kept in the clinic for the summer, and all medicines not picked up will be disposed of. Thank you!

Fashion Design

Page 10 of 15 June 7, 2013

Fashion Design students have been busy completing garments throughout the year. Students learned how to make pleats, darts, gathers, and buttonholes. They started on making a pair of pajama shorts and then constructed a simple black skirt with a zipper. After completing the mass production key chain project, students used the funds generated to purchase supplies for their final projects. Students had the opportunity pick what they wanted to sew for their final projects, and a some challenged themselves by sewing their prom dress.

FCCLA

Page 12 of 15 June 7, 2013

FCCLA members have been keeping busy at the end of the year. The last of May, they hosted a birthday party at the battered women’s shelter for those children who have birthdays in May. Students set up various booths like face painting, bean bag toss, ring toss, plinko, bingo, hula hoops, popcorn, and crafts. The children at the shelter won tickets which were exchanged for the toys donated by the students and teachers of Lackland. The children loved the prizes and enjoyed the party. To celebrate the FCCLA accomplishments of the year, FCCLA members enjoyed a day at the river.
