The American people reelected President Barack Obama as President of the United States on Tuesday, winning 303 electoral votes to Mitt Romney’s 206. In Mira Costa’s Oct. 29 mock election, Obama won the presidency 64% to Romney’s 28%. “Costa’s votes were in line with the rest of the United States, validating the process of the mock elections, Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter said. California voters also passed Proposition 30, which increases sales and income taxes by .25% annually to create about $6.8 billion in public education funding over the next seven years.

“I’m thrilled Prop 30 was passed and that the district will uphold the salary negotiations,â€? history teacher Bill Fauver said. BLOODY TUESDAY: UCLA medical staff collected 171 pints of blood from Mira Costa students on Tuesday in the Fisher gymnasium.

UCLA blood drive returns BY TAMARA KNELL STAFF WRITER Over 170 people participated in the UCLA blood drive on Tuesday in the Mira Costa gymnasium. Associated Student Body members urged students to donate blood in the weeks leading up to the drive, and 171 pints were collected in total. “Donating blood is an easy way to help somebody, senior Shay Gasperian said. “It’s the least I can do to help my community. UCLA’s Blood and Platelet Center holds a blood drive at Cos-

ta every semester. The blood is given directly to UCLA patients in need of blood transfusions. “It is an honorable and gratifying experience to donate,“ UCLA Hospital lab tech. Claire de Guzman said. “The blood is going to a place that needs it most. ASB and UCLA hoped to get at least 180 students to donate. They fell just shy of their goal. “ASB members contacted students to sign up for the drive, ASB commissioner of special events senior Cynthia Aragon said. “Next semester, we hope for even more student participation.

BY GASSIA ASHIKIAN STAFF WRITER For its annual fall performance, Mira Costa High School’s Advanced Women’s Choral performed at Zipper Concert Hall Saturday with the professional Women’s Choral Vox Femina. At the concert, entitled “No Ordinary Women, the choral performed three songs written by composers Gwyneth Walker and Joan Szymko, who were both present at the show. “It was such an honor to sing for such amazing composers, sophomore McKay Gillette said. “As a choir, we’ve all been working extremely hard on our performance, and it felt amazing to see the whole audience enjoy our show with Vox Femina. Read the rest of the story online at lavistamchs.com.

Timberlake shows disappointment with MUN despite win at Edison BY MORGAN THALER STAFF WRITER Though Costa Model United Nations received a Best Large Delegation award at an advanced conference at Edison High School in Huntington Beach on Oct. 20 and 21, MUN advisor Robert Timberlake was disappointed with the results. At Edison, seniors Alec Lautanen and Jack Rosenberg and junior Remi Nemeroff won best delegate awards. Although both Costa and Huntington Beach High School received Best Large Delegation awards, Huntington won by a larger margin. “We were one of the two best schools, but our arch rival, Huntington Beach, soundly beat us, Timberlake said. “This is probably one of the worst performances we have had in 15 years.

This year, Edison used new technology that posted updated delegates’ scores online throughout the conference. Some students believe that the score system and other distractions prevented Costa from performing at its prime. “We did not do as well as we had hoped, junior Greg Domeno said. “Costa Model U.N. was distracted by important conferences coming up. These conferences include a conference at Brown University, where Costa MUN students are currently debating this week. Edison was not one of Costa MUN’s major conferences, but students believe it sets the tone for the season. “We were strong as a team but weaker as individuals, junior Teddy Friedman said. “We need to go back to the fundamentals.

Costa’s daily bulletin distribution process needs improvement, reform BY DANA STERNTHAL STAFF WRITER The daily bulletin at Mira Costa is consistently ignored by many teachers, which deprives the student body of valuable information it needs to know on a daily basis. The daily bulletin is posted on the Mira Costa website everyday, and there are an extra six minutes during second period so that teachers have time to read it to students. It usually contains pertinent information about team tryouts, club meeting times, or other relevant information which informs students about what is happening on campus. When the bulletin isn’t read, students miss out on vital information. For sophomore Ryan Miller, the bulletin had important information regarding independent PE registration, but because his homeroom teacher did not read the bulletin, he missed the

This can be through a variety of options, including allowing students to access it on smart phones or printing out copies. Even if every teacher read it aloud, students may not always be listening. Students shouldn’t have to go out of their way to receive the bulletin considering the stress already implemented in daily academic, athletic and social life. Allowing students to use their own devices, such as iPads and smart phones, to access the bulletin goes hand in hand with the

push for electronics being incorporated in the classroom. In the future, when all classes use iPads, reading the bulletin will simply be a matter of going to the school website or the Twitter feed that posts the daily bulletin. The daily bulletin is a necessary component of Mira Costa that can’t be ignored. All students should get the information from the daily bulletin during their homeroom classes. Private college counselors provide necessary benefits BY QUINN KROPSCHOT STAFF WRITER Although Mira Costa provides students with two different college counselors on campus, Gail Currey and Katherine Folkman, hiring an outside private counselor is becoming more popular throughout the student body. Getting a private counselor is a great supplement to the counselors Costa offers for students who wish to have extraordinary help in the college planning process and is worth the cost. While Costa’s college counselors cannot personally edit all of a student’s supplemental essays, this is a service offered by nearly all independent counselors. Independent advisors are able to help students narrow their interests and decide what is most important to them when selecting a college. They have abundant resources that help students with

their search, and are familiar with an expansive variety of school cultures. Private counselors are quite costly, but they are worth the price. Despite the fact that Costa does offer a free choice, having an additional independent counselor is a helpful tool in the application process. Students who wish to have more help in the college application process should consider hiring an outside counselor. More and more students are choosing to invest in private counselors. The private option can give a more personal focus than Costa’s counselors, simply because of the volume of students they must work with.

This is helpful because it means students in the program are better prepared for their classes each successive year, and teachers don’t have to spend time letting kids adjust to the pace of an advanced class. Furthermore, the international standard IB provides makes it an especially enticing system for Costa to implement. Education reform has become a major topic in many communities, as AmerJACKSON CASADY/ LA VISTA ican schools are statistically falling behind. Allowing Costa’s students to be compared to others from across the globe ZRXOG EH D EHQH¿W WKDW DQ ,% SURJUDP would provide. District administrators, such as ManhatWDQ %HDFK 8QL¿HG 6FKRRO 'LVWULFW 6XSHULQtendent Dr. Mike Matthews, maintain that implementing an IB program would be il-

logical given the success of Mira Costa’s AP program. This is true, but the notion shouldn’t prevent the district from considering the IB program for the long-term. 5HGRQGR 8QLRQ +LJK 6FKRRO WULHG XQsuccessfully to implement an IB curriculum during the 2008-09 school year, but this initiative failed due to a lack of staff FRRSHUDWLRQ DFFRUGLQJ WR 58+6 3ULQcipal Nicole Wesley. It is completely understandable that current high school AP teachers would oppose the program, which is why the program could potentially start at the middle school level and grow into the higher grades. The main attraction of the IB program, especially at the middle school level, is the global and interdisciplinary approach it takes. With IBs, different subjects cover the same topics from their respective disciplines, leading to a more comprehensive, holistic learning experience. Expecting Mira Costa to implement IB classes right away would be an unreasonable request. However, in the interest of maintaining a competitive learning environment, they should be seriously considered for grades 6-12 in the future.
