KZSU LOVES OUR UND ERWRITERS!!! Big sloppy smooches and a million thanks to The Jungle for generously donating their printing resources. The Jungle, located in downtown Palo Alto, is a full service printshop, cafe, art gallery and music venue. Jungle has live concerts on the weekends. You can check their website, or give them a call for a list of upcoming events. jungle@jungledigital.com www.jungledigital.com 650.326.7622 542 High St., Palo Alto, CA, 94301

How to use KZSU With your radio – 90.1 FM Call us with feedback and requests – 650-723-9010 Send us presents – PO Box 20510, Stanford, CA 94309 Email us – General stuff: gm@kzsu.stanford.edu Music stuff: music@kzsu.stanford.edu Sports stuff: sports@kzsu.stanford.edu Underwrirting: underwriting@kzsu.stanford.edu Other stuff – check our website at http://kzsu.stanford.edu/contact/ On your computer – kzsu.stanford.edu Here’s where the possibilities become manifold and various... You can listen live to our streams (kzsulive.stanford.edu/) – sometimes we send out a different signal on stream 2, stuff like volleyball games and the like. (You can also listen to us on iTunes radio.) You can check out our schedule, and look at some of the resources we list, like the Concert Calendar. Or you can head for “music” (zookeeper.stanford.edu) and get your mind blown. We have something no other college (or ANY) radio station has – Zookeeper. Here you can not only see our charts and playlists (updated live) and reviews, but you can search our collection. Hit “Find It!” and type a word or phrase, and you’ll see where that word or phrase appears in a band name, album or song title, playlist, or review. You can spend happy hours rooting around in our music collection! It’s all thanks to our mad genius programmer, Jim Mason, who incidentally has the most tattoos at KZSU. Enjoy! Recent Record Reviews by KZSU DJs Lifesavas / Gutterfly: The Original Soundtrack Quonnum Records Reviewed by Witz Brassy-Funky Ensemble Hip-Hop. Hailing from Portland, Oregon (aka Razorblade City on the album) Vursatyl, Shines, and Jumbo bring a funky music and narrative to this soundtrack for a movie that doesn't exist. A "concept album" laden with guests, different personas, and catchy beats and hooks, the album runs the gamut from slow jams to club bangers. A lot of different influences and hip-hop artists are reflected in the music. Note the tracks with skits at the end. Yoshihide, Otomo/New Jazz Orchestra / Out To Lunch Label: Doubt Music Reviewed by Craig Matsumoto A very modern reworking of Eric Dolphy's 1964 free-jazz classic. Tougher, noisier, freer, brash. Dolphy's compositions are tangibly intact but beefed up for the '00s and thrown into rougher hands. It's great. Tracks like "Hat and Beard" preserve some of that bold '60s horn sound and use vibraphone as a backdrop, as the original did. From there, it just gets nuts, in ways that are loud and goofy ("Gazzelloni") or quiet and droney ("Straight Up and Down"). The band is different, too -- touches like turntables and Otomo's electric guitar, things obviously not on the original. Plus, Otomo has lined up a barrage of horn players, for a variety of soloing voices. (Dolphy's album had him and Freddie Hubbard). Esg / A South Bronx Story 2 Label: Soul Jazz Reviewed by Dr Furious Art funk, post-punk, no wave, disco punk, rap or the world's first hip-hop band? This is a revised (re)issue of ESG's "Best of" compilation. ESG is a late 1970s/early 1980s, all-female band of seminal cred. Four sisters (the Scroggins sisters) from South Bronx created a uniquely stripped down, but yet rhythm-fueled sound as if they were distilling Jame Brown's funk elements down to their most core essence: heavy percussion, syncopated beats, funky guitar/bass lines, bratty vocalisms and hollering. If minimalism (dub/no-wave) was the medium of distillation, the end effect was a dance music that carried the flavor of NYC's 1980s disco scene, while its repetitive elements (think of early electronic game music) were laying down the foundation for the evolution of dance music into its more industrial-sounding house/techno phases. Dig it! So addictive... like a bad 1980s drug. Play with Bush Tetras, Salt-N-Peppa, Liquid, Liquid, Funkadelic, PIL, A Certain Ratio, the Slits. Taraf de Haidouks "Maskarada": Label: Crammed Disks Reviewed by Decca Taraf goes classical with a crazy gypsy take on Bartok, Khachaturian, and more (plus some originals). Tight arrangements too. It's the soundtrack to Satan asking you to dance...

Angels Of Light / We Are Him Label: Young God Records Reviewed by Your Imaginary Friend Unclassifiable creations from Michael Gira's solo project postSwans. Though Gira has been instrumental in the "anti-folk" movement by signing and giving a voice to the likes of Devandra Banhardt via his Young God Records label, those sounds don't entirely dominate his music, though elements do. Instead, this stuff fails to be pigeonholed, even likened to other bands (besides later Swans/Jarboe). Distinct darkness, bent creepiness have always been his forte, however, gone is his trademark subsonic baritone. Instead, when he fills the headphones with pretty joy and light it comes across instead like skipping through a dew soaked meadow filled with wildflowers in the warm morning light only to trip over an eviscerated body hiding in the grass, coming face to face with its dead dark eyes. The Congos / Cock Mouth Kill Cock Label: Explorer Reviewed by Sadie O Real Roots Reggae from some serious survivors. The Congos were a vocal duo, produced by Lee Scratch Perry, however now they’re basically vocalist Cedric Myton, and with much sparser production. What do KZSU DJs do when it rains? Some of us like to eat: Jack & Jon B - Eat A Burrito. Some us like to drink: Mateo Tambien - Sipping a dry martini DJ Lando - Drinking homemade chai tea...or cheap whiskey The Big Chief - DRUNK! Some of us seek out companionship: Paul Gassee - Under the covers with a lover... Gavin - with the ones i love J.C. - Curled up in bed with someone special. Djmatthewstarkrubin - that's too suggestive to answer! Kevvy Kev - *Please*: I couldn't *possibly* answer such an indelicate question. Not in front of the kids. . . Some of us multitask: Bonnie Swift - Reading a comic book, watching the birds, listening to Orson Welles, riding the train, going to the beach, debating politics, hiding in the archives, recording ambiant soundclips. Gears - Staying in, watching movies, cooking, screwing like a rabbit... Decca - A good book, a lapful of cat, a fire in the fireplace, and my sweetie. What could be better than that? Sri - Eat hot and spicy Food, Watch Movies Your Imaginary Friend - Flying Saucer Attack, a pair of headphones and a bottle of vicodin ES. Natalie - i have multiple favorites, here are two: if it's not heavy rain, hiking in the woods (as long as i have somewhere warm and dry to end my day in); baking tasty goodies in a warm kitchen with lots of windows! Paul - Reading, curled up on the couch next to my dog and a snack. Charles Ivan King - Sleeping/writing in a very comfortable RV type vehicle near a Redwood forest, wine on hand, good food and a fun woman as the rain pounds on top of the vehicle and sunroof.... Ragnar of Ravensfjord - MST3K on TV, C93 on the stereo, a fresh bottle of mead nearby and a really awesome girl next to me. Some of us can think of nothing finer to do than give ourselves to our beloved radio station: Raya & Doron - Volunteering at KZSU. Francis - Broadcasting on KZSU, of course! Aysh-Bot & Farmer Flap-Jack - By tuning into the best damn radio station in the Bay Area! That's right. You know what I'm talkin' about. SadieO - Apart from sitting at the computer composing the KZSU Program Guide or any number of other station tasks? Or hunting for new music to inflict on my battle-scarred listeners? Um... Probably puddle jumping, I guess. Some of us are productive: mike - listening to music in my apartment with the windows open so I can hear the rain as well Anonymous - On the can, reading. sarah bellum - painting Micah Cratty - Outside in the rain playing soccer. Fool - in a wetsuit (i call them playsuits). usually that means in the ocean, but not necessarily. Edwin - Walking the streets listening to SHOEGAZE!!! aims - i feel in my gut what i should do, and i do it! DJ Cikee - i'm notorious for finding a big puddle to jump in... pool or ocean... i love to swim in the rain.

Some of us are destructive: Dannaman - slitting my wrists. Gamma - hear the grass grow or commit suicide Gus the Fat & thePeanutGallery - Playing with matches Some of us are keenly in tune with climatological realities: Michael Uhila - With a jacket on dj milkie - watching thunder and lightning. oh yea, the bay area does not have thunderstorms chizzy - It doesn't rain in California. Byrd of Paradise - not getting soaked Mark Donig - going to a Giants game. Becuase the odds are that if it's raining, it's the winter. And it would be incredible if, for whatever reason, the Giants were somehow playing in the winter. That would be ridiculous. And impossible. Which makes it even better. Some of us are simply inscrutable: D-Nice - Larry Lessig. Fo - Cheech and Chong. M-SMOOTH - YBBI Sunshine - Your suntan. Kesha - Wisely. Some of us compose screeds: Witz - Asking "What's your favorite way to spend a rainy day?" is like asking, "When you're on the moon, what's your favorite sipping brandy?" I'm never gonna be on the moon, and it never freakin' rains in Palo Alto! Coming down here from Seattle, I need me a little bit of cloud cover occasionally. A drizzle, perhaps-- rain would be a baby miracle. And I've heard that "it rains after Halloween," or whatever, but I mean RAIN-- not God's Piss Shiver, but RAIN. The kind that lets you lie inside all day in your boxers watching Hitch and eating Soft Batch cookies like Trail Mix, because there's no chance anyone is coming over to see you and there's no chance you're leaving the apartment. So yeah, what's my favorite way to spend a rainy day? Apparently slovenly, for one. Watching the superbly nonthreatening Will Smith. And if I'm lucky, with some tasty baked goods and-- if the fates are with me-- with those Claussen Pickle Halves that only come in the refrigerator section and cost like five dollars a jar, but are toooootally worth it (you know what I'm talkin' bout). That is, if it every rained here. I might as well be shopping for sipping brandies. And some of us: Anurag Reddy Watch TV Bruce - Watching movies Raymundo - Well, on a rainy day I become a couch potato watch endless amounts of 80's movies and old school wrestling.

Discovering the World The time: September, 1997 The place: Paris I’m in the apartment of a friend of some friends, waiting for this gorgeous French guy to finish getting ready so the four of us can go get dinner to celebrate our leaving for Africa the next day. My friends put on some music to distract us from our hunger. It’s Francis Cabrel’s “Samedi Soir Sur La Terre.” I fall in love… That was my introduction to world music. A very cool French singer/guitarist with a Gypsy Kings sort of influence breaking through my jet lag and filling me with an instant “I must have this” lust. It was so different from the crap I was used to hearing on American radio that it just floored me. A few days later I was in Malawi. Olivia Newton-John’s “Getting Physical” was playing over a tinny loudspeaker in the Zomba market. Apparently Malawi is where American pop music goes to die. But amid the ancient bootleg cassettes of Ms. Newton-John and the glory that was Hall and Oates there was something from Fela Kuti. I fall in love again. Back in Paris, I hit the music stores. Henri Dikongue, Arthur H, Caetano Veloso, Toto la Momposina, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Henri Salvador… I go wild. OK, so I was late in discovering some of these superstars, but once I did I jumped in with both feet. Screw Chanel, my idea of shopping in Paris involves music, not models. Having created my own monster, once back in the US, I discover more treasures. Native American music (Joanne Shenandoah, Sharon Burch, Robert Mirabal), fabulous Latin artists (Ibrahim Ferrer, Virginia Rodrigues, Sierra Maestra), the music of Japan (Hirai Ken, Mr. Children, Bump of Chicken), the Celtic world (Old Blind Dogs, Anuna, Kila) and on, and on, and on. And each new acquisition somehow leads me to another must-have. I’ve often been asked how someone vaguely ignorant of world music can get started finding out what they like. For me the best way was just to go for it. The best advice I can give is find an artist you like and follow the thread. Is he/she on a compilation album? Great, pick it up and find who else you might like. Do you like a particular style? Check out some of the stars of the genre or a few up-and-comers. If you’re interested in world music, the internet is your friend. You’d be amazed at the quality and variety of international radio stations out there (just make sure you turn back to KZSU when you’re done listening to Radio Zimbabwe). There are also a few world music labels that specialize in compilations, especially World Music Network and Putumayo. Each releases titles based on both countries/regions (such as the music of Israel or sounds of South Asia), as well as styles, (all Salsa or nothing but Bollywood hits) that make it easy to explore a variety of artists without making a long-term commitment. If you hear something on KZSU that you like, check out the playlist on zookeeper.stanford.edu to find out what it is. And remember that our DJs like nothing better than sharing their musical favorites, so feel free to call us or drop us an e-mail asking for musical recommendations. In the meantime, keep your ears and your mind open. The world is waiting to be listened to.
