s I sit here and write, it’s just days before Christmas. By the time you read this, the decorations will have been taken down, but the message of Christmas will still be valid. It was my distinct honor and pleasure to be in a recent chapel service with our youth where I read parts of both Matthew’s and Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus. I reminded our young people that there are differences in the two stories. Matthew mentions the Magi, but not the shepherds. Luke speaks of the shepherds, but not Wise men. I don’t believe the stories are in conflict

with each other because they each have a different purpose in writing. Matthew is trying to convince his Jewish audience that Jesus is a king from the line of David. Luke is speaking to a Gentile audience about a Savior who is coming to the common man. The point that I wanted to make with our youth is that, to be certain, celebrating Jesus’ birth brings us together with people that we might not otherwise come to know. There is reason to believe that the Magi were much later in their arrival to Bethlehem than the shepherds. The shepherds where waiting in a field nearby. The journey for the Magi might have taken some time. But even if time separated them, purpose did not. They shared a common goal of witness and praise for a newborn Savior

and King. Christmas, Jesus’ birth, brings us together to celebrate on common ground. In a few short months, the Methodist Home will be on a new property where a new facility will help us better serve our youth. A united purpose of helping others and honoring Christ will bring people together to stand in the same place and tell others how much God loves.

e want to thank Chick-fil-A of Central Kentucky for choosing us as their official non-profit partner for their Mother-Son Date Knight event. The event took place Sept. 23, 2016 and highlighted a core value of KyUMH CEO Rev. Randy Coy (right) is presented a check for the evening’s family health and togetherness proceeds with Chick-fil-A Area Marketing Director Chris Wilson and the Cow. shared by KyUMH and Chick-fil-A. The night for moms and their sons had an attendance of over 400 and raised $5,500 for our ministry. KyUMH provided event support by processing registrations, publicity and supplying awesome volunteers. Those that attended enjoyed delicious Chick-fil-A food and had great fun with the TapSnap photo booth, a magician, a DJ and special appearances by the Chick-fil-A cows! The night was such a success that we are already planning another Mother-Son Date Knight next fall.

n illuminating fall afternoon welcomed former residents who said a bittersweet goodbye to their childhood home. On Sept. 10, 2016, the final Versailles Campus Kentucky United Methodist Homes for Children and Youth Annual Day featured its usual silent and live auctions, food and time for fellowship. But this year, the event was a therapeutic

experience for alumni who returned to say farewell. Among the smiling faces in the crowd, was a young woman who found it very difficult to be happy when she first came to KyUMH. Misty came to the Home when she was twelve-years-old with deeply rooted anger. As a child, she witnessed her mother being physically abused by her stepfather on a daily basis. This violent

childhood went on for 10 years before she arrived. ”Needless to say, I was not a happy person. I didn’t like authority figures. I was not excited by any means to be there away from my mom. I was very mean to the staff.” Misty was verbally aggressive and a challenge to everyone who tried to care for her. She was also a danger to herself and others. “They put up with a lot from me, and they kept trying. But, you can’t

help a kid that doesn’t want to be helped.” Despite our initial efforts, Misty continued to spiral out of control. She needed hospitalization and soon found herself moving from placement to placement.Following multiple hospital visits, she went on to live with her father, stepmother and stepbrother. After a short time, Misty’s stepbrother began abusing her. Misty continued on page 7

“To know that I am unconditionally loved is an amazing feeling.”

Better Start Packin’ Our Bags Relocating to provide the best care possible.

$15 Million Capital Campaign Update By Melinda R. Smith, Vice President of Advancement

T

he foundation is laid, the walls are up . . . even the electricity has been installed. The wait is almost over and before you know it, we’ll be moving in (hopefully, Summer 2017). Our new facilities for treating Kentucky’s most vulnerable children will be among the best. The building you see here is a 30,000-squarefoot Family Center that will provide 24/7 care and housing for up to 20 children. Included in the plan is a kitchen, a dining area, therapeutic services offices and a gymnasium. The Capital Campaign to pay for the new property is a $15 million project which we have broken into two phases. Currently, we are seeking donors for the first phase.

Our vision for the property would not be solid without the knowledge that God has His hand on this ministry. Our experiences remind us of how important God is and has been to our success and survival. Just the process of discerning how to move forward has been an exercise of faith. God is bringing the right people at the right time to help us in this forward move. Time and again, former residents have shared how, they discovered the God of love here – and it changed their lives. In addition to the new Family Center, we will offer our Equine Therapy program right on our own campus. The therapeutic benefits of working with such beautiful creatures are the very reason the stables

and paddocks must be established. Studies show that people working with horses experience decreased blood pressure, lower stress levels and reduced feelings of tension, anxiety and anger. In addition, studies show the same people exhibit feelings of self-esteem, empowerment, patience and trust. In a nutshell, isn’t that essentially what we want for all children? When everything is completed, what a blessing it will be and the glory will be God’s! How awesome that soon children who have been dealt the worst hand, will have a chance to be winners. Soon, those

who may not have received the most adequate care, will experience premier care. Soon, those who maybe have been stifled in their education, will be taught by some of the best educators in the state. We have many naming opportunities in our plans. If you would be interested in learning about those opportunities either through your own gift or through a gift from a group, please contact me. Come “Build with Us” and be a part of this dream coming true - a better future for Kentucky children.
