THE WIZARD OF OZ
The classic movie musical comes to life on stage. Derby Dinner Playhouse is presenting the Royal Shakespeare Company version of The Wizard of Oz, which uses much of the aura of the film to create exciting live theatre. The production also strives to look and sound just like the famous 1939 MGM film starring Judy Garland. The Wizard of Oz was written by L. Frank Baum with music by Harold Arlen and lyrics by E.Y. Hamburg. Songs included in this production are delightful numbers we all know and love such as “Over the Rainbow,” “We’re Off To See the Wizard,” and “If I Only Had A Brain.”
The Wizard of Oz is under the direction of Lee Buckholz with choreography by Heather Paige Folsom and musical direction by Scott Bradley. National Dance Day
Do you want to dance? Then take this great opportunity to participate in National Dance Day on July 27. The YMCA and Kentucky Center are partnering in the event, allowing people to show their moves. You can attend free dance lessons at a number of YMCAs from July 7-24. The amazing thing is that you don’t have to be the best dancer or trained in dancing, you just get to have fun. The routines that are being taught are from YouTube videos posted by the Dizzy Feet Foundation. These videos cater to a range of dance abilities so anyone can take part in this event. Types of dance may include hip-hop, cha cha, Latin, zumba, line dancing, and more.
Among the routines are the “Everybody Dance” and the “Hip Hop Master Class.” The “Everybody Dance” routine is to “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke and choreographed for people of all levels of ability by one of the judges from So You Think You Can Dance. Two choreographers from the same show have created a challenging “Hip-Hop Master Class” routine to Jennifer Lopez’s song, “Live It Up” for those with dance experience. No tickets are required for this event on July 27 from 11 am to 1 pm. The dance classes are free and listed on the YMCA website. Homearama 2013 Homearama is back this year showcasing the talents of builders, interior designers, craftspeople, and landscape architects. You can gather inspiration for your own home or find your dream home. Homearama takes place at Locust Creek and Rock Springs, July 13-28. There are ten homes at Rock Springs and eight homes at Locust Creek to view. This year Homearama focuses on energy efficiency and integrates this concept in the homes. Outdoor living, kitchen cabinets, and master bathrooms are among the features many visitors look forward to seeing. At Locust Creek, a new take on an old architecture is showcased. The “Bungalow” home features the arts and crafts style. It has a low pitched roof, porch with thick square columns, an open floor plan, numerous windows, and beamed ceilings. There are three bedrooms on the second floor and a first floor master bedroom, with a total of 4.5 bathrooms. This house is equipped with a wet bar, office area and a
rec room. Rock Springs presents homes with custom touches that make each home unique. In the kitchen of the “Havre de Grace” home, a brick wall extends to the fireplace. There is a 12 foot ceiling in the great room creating openness for guests. The rooms are divided forming separate spaces that flow for entertaining people. A bedroom includes a nook that has a window seat. The front and back porches are both large and perfect for relaxation. Also, there is an English style cottage with an English garden, fire pit, and two master bedrooms. Both of these homes incorporate new features. The houses are open for viewing from 5 to 9:30 pm daily. Admission is $10 per person or $15 for a dual-site ticket. Children ages 12 and under are free. Only cash and checks are accepted. Rock Springs is located on Highway 22, and Locust Creek is off of Shelbyville Road, four miles from the Gene Snyder Freeway.

12th Annual Lebowski Fest
Have you ever seen the movie, The Big Lebowski? From July 18 to 21, the 12th Annual Lebowski Fest, which originated in Louisville, celebrates the film through many activities such as bowling, music, and a movie screening. Fans travel from all over the country so they can participate in the festivities with an array of Dudes, Walters, and Maudes. This festival first kicks off on the 18th at 7 pm with a painting class located at Pinot’s Pallette. On Friday, there is a free Lebowski live lunch radio hour. You can attend Kyle Gass Band’s live studio performance at WFPK. Later that night, a movie party will take place on the lawn in front of the Executive Strike and Spare at 8 pm. The Kyle Gass Band will perform again. Tickets are $25 for the movie party. Saturday includes a garden party, bowling party, and the Legendary AfterParty at Executive Strike and Spare.
The garden party begins at 4 pm. There are Lebowski-themed games and live music by Leftover Cuties, March Madness Marching Band, and Taylor Brashears with Va Va Vixens. Tickets cost $20. The Bowling Party starts at 8 pm, with unlimited bowling, costume, trivia, and other contests. The cost is $30 and includes bowling and shoe rental. Following the bowling party, the Legendary After-Party has food trucks, and a DJ plays dance music. This event is free and takes place in the lounge. The festival ends with a “Strongly Vaginal” Lebowski art show on the 21st. Lebowski-themed art by various artists will be displayed. This is free at the WHY Lou Two: Electric NuLu gallery, 806 E Market Street, at 1 pm. Tickets for all events are available for cash only at the NuLu location on Market Street.
