2018:

TOP 10 FASTEST CARS

IN THE WORLD. L

et’s get real. There are many ways to measure who is the king of automobiles, but top speed is surely the one everyone cares most about. These ten exotic supercars are more than just fun though: they’re the fastest production cars on planet earth. One-off custom jobs didn’t make the cut.

Of course, there are new cars on the horizon (we’re looking at you, Bugatti). But for now, this is it. Enjoy. 1. HENNESSEY VENOM F5: 301 MPH

B

oasting a claimed top speed of 301 mph, the Venom F5 smashes the previous top speed figure by more than a school zone speed limit. To do so, Hennessey started with an all-new, 2,950-pound carbon fiber chassis (the Venom GT is based on the Lotus Exige), and bolted a 1,600-hp, 7,4-liter, twin-turbo V8 to it. The results are absolutely astonishing, as the car can reportedly go from 0 to 249 to 0 mph in less than 30 seconds total. Hennessey has yet to confirm its top speed with the Guinness Book of World Records, so the Koenigsegg Agera RS remains the official fastest car in the world … for now.

2. KOENIGSEGG AGERA RS: 278 MPH

In terms of spec sheets, Hennessey’s Venom F5 is more impressive. Its claimed top speed of 301 mph obliterates everything else on this list by a significant margin, but Hennessey hasn’t verified its numbers with the Guinness Book of World Records. Koenigsegg has, so even though it gets the silver medal here, in the real world, the Agera RS is the true speed king. To set the official record, Koenigsegg asked the Nevada Department of Transportation to close an 11-mile stretch of Route 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump. On public roads, the 1,160-hp Swedish supercar hit 284.55 mph during its first run and 271.19 mph during the second, which averages out to 277.9 mph.

3. HENNESSEY VENOM GT: 270MPH ennessey recorded a 270.4-mph run at the Kennedy Space Center in 2014. To be considered legitimate, record attempts usually require a run in each direction, and an average is taken to account for wind conditions. There’s also some debate about whether the Hennessey Venom qualifies as a production car due to its handbuilt nature. Hennessey’s monster wasn’t recognized as the world’s fastest car by the Guinness Book of World Records.

4. BUGATTI CHIRON: 261 MPH o list is complete without a supercar from the legendary Bugatti. The Veyron was a monumental feat of engineering, a supercar whose performance was so marvelous, Top Gear presenter James May compared it to the automobile equivalent of the Concorde. After 10 years of production, the Volkswagen Group has unveiled the Veyron’s successor, the Bugatti Chiron. The Chiron is a king among supercars, which is fitting, as kings will be among the few to obtain one — only 500 were released for the first generation, and they cost a staggering $2.6 million each.

5. BUGATTI VEYRON SUPER SPORT: 268 MPH hen Volkswagen purchased the Bugatti brand, it had one goal: build the fastest production car in the world. The original Veyron achieved that goal, and with a price tag of $1.7 million and a quad-turbocharged W16 engine producing 1,000 hp. The Veyron was soon dethroned by the SSC Ultimate Aero, so Bugatti came back with the Veyron Super Sport. This beat pumps out an astonishing 1200 HP, and numerous aerodynamic changes meant to help gain a few extra miles per hour.

6. SCC ULTIMATE AERO: 256 MPH helby SuperCars (SSC) has nothing to do with Carroll Shelby of Cobra fame, but for a moment its Ultimate Aero was the fastest production car in the world. It reached a top speed of 256 mph back in 2007, beating the non-Super Sport version of the Veyron.Helping it achieve that warm speed was a 6.3-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 1,287 hp. There are no electronic driver aids to help control that power either, creating a purer driving experience for those with talent.

T

7. TESLA ROADSTER: 250MPH he original Tesla Roadster was a sports car based on the Lotus Elise, and although its performance was certainly impressive, it’s more known for establishing Tesla as a legitimate player in the automotive world. The new Roadster is another thing altogether. This second-generation Roadster features the most impressive spec sheet of any EV before it : 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds, 0 to 100 mph in 4.2 seconds, and a claimed top speed of 250 mph.

A

8. SALEEN S7 TWIN TURBO: 248 MPH mong performance addicts, the Saleen S7 is legend: exotic styling, insane performance, and tuning potential to name a few. But much of the vehicle’s appeal is actually historical. Produced from 2000 to 2009, the S7 was America’s first mid-engined supercar. Producing 750 hp, the vehicle could hit 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds before smashing the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds. Its most stunning statistic is its top speed of 248 mph.

S

9. KOENIGSEGG CCR: 242 MPH wedish supercar builder Koenigsegg briefly held the “world’s fastest” title. Its CCR reached 242 mph at Italy’s Nardo Ring in 2005. Despite its impressive stats, the CCR’s moment in the spotlight was as brief as its claim on the world. It was soon supplanted by the CCX, and then by the current Agera. Koenigsegg says the Agera-based One:1 will top out at over 270 mph, but no one has tried it yet.

T

10. MCLAREN F1: 241 MPH he Mclaren F1 is more than just a former world’s-fastest car. With its carbon-fiber body, gold-lined engine bay, 6.1-liter BMW M V12, and center driver’s seat, it just might be the coolest car ever made.Years before it attempted to take on Ferrari and Porsche with the MP4-12C, McLaren was known only as a successful race team in Formula 1 and the defunct Can-Am series.

Tawau Raretro Day: An Exercise in How to Party. If your first reaction was to open up a tab and key in “Tawau” in Google, then don’t fret – you weren’t the only one. When Alie, founder of Retro Havoc, told me we would be spending a few days in a small town called Tawau located on the picturesque island of Sabah, to take part in the Tawau Raretro Day event, I also confess to opening up another tab to hunt for more information. From Kuala Lumpur, it takes roughly a three hour flight to arrive at the small airport in Tawau. With the ability to accommodate eight aircraft at a time, Tawau Airport is the second largest in Sabah. With most of the arrivals coming from mainland Malaysia or Indonesia, I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised when immigration couldn’t believe I was visiting Tawau for a car event. Apparently, American passports passing through immigration here is a rarity. The lush, tropical climate is home to roughly 400,000 residents which is made up of a diverse mix thanks to its geographical location, and rich history. Like its rich history, the food in Tawau is simply mouth watering. The food was so ridiculously good that if you go to Tawau and don’t try any of the local cuisines, you’re an idiot.

“But of course, you didn’t click this article to hear me rant about the tropical nature and delicious cuisines that Tawau has. Like me at the time, you are probably keen on learning what the car culture is like there.”

S

eeing that Alie has strong ties with cars that are considered ‘retro’, and the name of the event was Tawau Raretro Day, I was assuming that, similar to main land Malaysia, older Japanese cars would be flavor of the day.

S

hortly after arriving at the venue on the morning of the event, the participants began to flood into the disused Tawau Airport. With the vast majority of attendees and participants easily being in their 20’s and possibly 30’s, you could feel the youthful energy around the area.

I

know I mentioned it before in an earlier post, but this kind of contagious and abundance of energy is seriously lacking at events in Japan nowadays.

W

ith the ease of working on, and the ability to find or create parts, older Japanese car were indeed a popular choice for

enthusiasts, Toyota in particular.

I

can’t recall the last time I saw so many Corollas, Sprinters, and Celicas of all generations located in one place.

T

he event was to be broken into three main segments: drag, drift, and show. All of which were basically occurring simultaneously – which made going back and forth in the 30 degree celsius plus heat (86F) with no trees for shades (remember this used to be the main airport for the area at one point), and near 100% humidity rather interesting, to say the least. Participants would line up on the old runway, which had been transformed into a makeshift quarter mile drag strip, to get their pictures taken before making an unofficial pass down the strip. Let the FUN begin...

fir5t dr1ve... 2018 Koenigsegg Agera RS Review Koenigsegg has been in the business of building top-level sports cars for 23 years, keeping volumes very low, every model is customized for the exacting needs of each customer and now two are identical. The Agera RS is a development of the standard Agera which was first introduced in 2010, many years of development have made the RS into a fearsome track weapon and it is currently the fastest production car on the planet.

What’s it like inside? The interior of the Agera is suitably quirky and while its shares some switchgear with other Koenigsegg products, the majority of the switches and dials will seem alien to those not familiar with the brand. This is a good thing in the rarefied sector that the Agera RS resides in and even before you get to step inside, the dihedral synchro-helix doors swivel up in a most unusual fashion to greet you. Climbing into the low-slung seats is not quite as difficult a task as in some other makes and once inside the level of craftsmanship is superb. Carbon-fiber is the dominant material and other than the round control dial in the center of the dashboard there is not much else to distract you from the road ahead. The type of material used for the interior is up to each customer but the starting point for each RS features Alcantara, suede and Nappa leather on most surfaces. There is just about enough space for two and there is a front trunk for smaller items as well as an available roof-rack for some additional storage.

Car Culture

Car Culture

How does it drive? As the RS is a focused performance machine, it is not intended to be used as a daily driving road car, the suspension is set up to make the most of the available power on offer and the cabin fills with road and engine noise as the speeds rise. There is a detachable hardtop that allows for a targa-esque driving experience and heightens the already immersive sounds that accompany an Agera RS driven with purpose. This level of performance requires a race track and some skill to fully exploit however the level of downforce on offer makes the RS far less of a handful at the limit than you would expect of something this powerful.

Car Culture

What about the performance? Equipped with a 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the Agera RS produces 1176 horsepower and 940 lb-ft of torque in standard form. The 1MW upgrade boosts these numbers to 1360 hp and an even 1,000 lb-ft. When equipped with the upgrade, the Agera RS reaches 60 mph in under 2.9-seconds and blasts to 124 mph in under 7-seconds. This is achieved even with a traction-limiting rear-wheel drive setup, a 7-speed paddle-shift transmission is standard. The much-publicized top speed of 277.9 mph is currently the highest of any road car ever built and the RS also holds the record for a number of other performance benchmarks too. The engine has been designed to offer its maximum output even with regular gasoline and E85 ethanol can be used in certain markets.

What is my option? The specification levels of the RS are largely dependent on each customer, only 25 units will be produced in total and there is a lot of bespoke equipment that can be optioned. Notable standard equipment includes adjustable pedal box and steering column, memory foam covered bucket seats, hydraulic lifting system, carbon-ceramic brakes with staggered 19/20-inch hollow carbon-fiber wheels and a full carbon-fiber/Kevlar bodyshell. The aerodynamics have been optimized for added downforce over the standard Agera and there is an active rear spoiler and many advanced features from the One:1 development program that have found

their way into the RS. Notable available options include an active and self-levelling package, 3G connect Pre-Active chassis setup, active sound cancellation and a variety of aero packages.
