WELCOME TO THE ISLAND OF KAUA‘I IN HAWAII

GOLF TRAVELLER 5.0 JANUARY 2018

JOIN PAR NZ GOLFING HOLIDAYS FOR NINE RELAXING DAYS IN THE HAWAIIAN PARADISE OF KAUA‘I FOR A TEAM’S TOURNAMENT – THE 2018 HAWAII KAUA‘I GOLF CLASSIC. The fourth largest and most northern of the Hawaiian Islands, Kaua‘i is known as the ‘Garden Island’ for good reason. Its lush forests, rivers and waterfalls, and awesome coastal ranges are in stark contrast to

Hawaii

the intense resort areas of Maui and Oahu further south. Though people have lived here for more than 1500 years, much of its rugged landscape is unspoilt. Picture perfect. At 40 kilometres long and up to 53 kilometres wide, this enchanting island has a lot to see in a relatively small area. That might be the key to why more than 60 feature films – from the 1958 romantic musical ‘South Pacific’ to box-office smashes like ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ and ‘Lilo and Stitch’, – have featured Kaua’i locations as stunning backdrops to their storylines. That’s not even counting the numerous television and commercial shoots. Kaua‘i also has the distinction of being the first Hawaiian island where Captain James Cook went ashore. Disembarking from the ‘Resolution’, Cook landed at Waimea Bay in 1778, setting in train events that led to the United States annexing Hawaii in www.parnz.co.nz

THE GOLF COURSES The dramatic natural settings of Kaua‘i are sure to energise your teams throughout the six tournament rounds on four distinctly Hawaiian golf courses.

Ocean Course at Hokuala Designed by the one and only Jack Nicklaus, this course is arguably the best on Kaua‘i and its dramatic seaside cliffs help make it one of the world’s most beautiful. Indeed, Hokuala was named North America’s Best Golf Course for 2017 in the recent World Golf Awards. Treelined with mango and guava groves,

it is a typical risk-and-reward Nicklaus challenge. Previously known as Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Club, the Hokuala layout originally featured three sets of nine holes, but it was reconfigured to 18 holes when a Hawaiian developer bought the course 30 years ago. www.parnz.co.nz

15

Poipu Bay Golf Course Poipu Bay was home to the former one of the elite PGA tours, the Grand Slam of Golf, from 1994 to 2006. Only the winners from the previous year’s four majors were invited to compete in a 36-hole stroke play championship for a very lucrative purse. So, by playing this Robert Trent Jones Jnr course, you’ll be walking in the footsteps of golfing greats such as Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Tiger 16

GOLF TRAVELLER 5.0 JANUARY 2018

Woods, Vijay Singh, Nick Faldo, Phil Mickelson – and New Zealand’s own Michael Campbell. Dubbed by Jones as the ‘Pebble Beach of the Pacific’, the open-links style course is set above coastal cliffs and bluffs. Its intriguing array of 85 bunkers and five water hazards designed around several ancient Hawaiian heiau, or sacred places of worship, is made more challenging by the variable wind conditions.

Puakea Golf Club Be prepared to be astounded. This public course at the base of Mount Haupu is one of the island’s youngest 18 holes, and is right in the heart of ‘Jurassic Park’ country. Golf course architect Robin Nelson, describes his design as resulting in one of the most fun courses to play in Hawaii.

Puakea is a tree-lined open parkland style course, with undulating terrain, surrounded by both residential and natural coastal landscapes. The course is resort quality and built on more than 80 hectares of a former sugar cane plantation. www.parnz.co.nz

17

Princeville Makai Golf Club The Makai is our second Robert Trent Jones Jnr course in this series and, with five ocean-front holes, it’s another beauty. Makai, which means ‘towards the sea’, was Jones’ first solo design and was the site of the 1978 World Cup and six LPGA Tour events between 1986 and 1991. 18

GOLF TRAVELLER 5.0 JANUARY 2018

Today’s layout is the result of an extensive $6 million renovation completed in 2010, but the stunning views of the Pacific have been there for ever. Seashore paspalum turf grass provides a superb playing surface for golfers of all skill levels
