SHOCKINGLY SWEET Cats upset Wichita State Shockers, advance to Sweet 16 to face Louisville DAVID SCHUH

Kernel columnist

ST. LOUIS — Three weeks ago, UK had no chance of reaching the Sweet 16. The wildest Big Blue Dreams could not have conjured up what happened on Sunday. An 8-seed team with 10 losses had no chance against the first team in history to win 35 games without a loss. But the Cats are somehow headed to the Sweet 16, and the best game of this college basketball season showed why they now have a real chance to make a year of disappointment flip. Wichita State University shouldn’t have lost to UK. The undefeated Shockers shot 55 percent, made 10 three-pointers and had two players score 20 or more points. Every time the Cats were hit with adversity this year, they folded. So it doesn’t make much sense that now, almost with the flip of a switch, head coach John Calipari has his team fighting like a team well beyond its years. And this game, more than any other, presented UK with every chance to fold. Not only did the Shockers look like a championship-caliber team, they also had the best player on the floor. Senior forward Cleanthony Early scored 31 points, showing everyone that the game’s NBA prospects weren’t just wearing blue.

He had an answer for every UK run, and even though the Cats’ second-half defense was probably their best of the season, they couldn’t stop the Shockers from showing why no other team had figured them out this year. So with both teams delivering alternating knockout blows, it was only fitting that such a well-played game came down to one final play. And when Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year Fred VanVleet’s 3-pointer clanged off the right side of the rim, the Cats’ miracle run finally seemed real. When UK had to play its best game of the year — when Wichita State, Early and destiny all seemed to be piling onto the Cats — they rose to previously unthinkable heights. It was just a third round game, but it will be the bestplayed game of the tournament, of the season and maybe in each of these young Cats’ lives. And it seems ironic that UK, with all its tradition and history, is in the midst of a shocking Cinderella run. The story is writing itself: Spoil a perfect season to book a date with your most-hated rival. The University of Louisville is next in Indianapolis, a team that UK beat in December, albeit when both teams were vastly different versions of themselves. But playing like it is right now, UK may be the best of the 16 teams left standing. Take a moment to appreciate the game played on Sunday. You won’t see a better one for a long time.

Guard James Young scored 13 points against Wichita State. He put the team in the lead with 1:40 left.

ST. LOUIS — UK and Wichita State University were separated by one possession on Sunday night. How the teams made it to this point in the season could not be more different. UK survived, as it has all year, with plays made by freshmen. Wichita State, a team full of experience, gave the ball to sophomore guard Fred VanVleet (the Missouri Valley Conference player of the year), as he missed what would have been the gamewinning shot. The Cats and the Shockers dueled one another to the tune of 14 lead changes. The combination of UK freshmen and the Shockers’ empty final possession helped the Cats

earn a nail-biting 78-76 win in St. Louis. “This was a great joy in seeing a group of young men come together and start figuring this out,” UK head coach John Calipari said. “I was really proud of our guys hanging in there and fighting. They never gave up.” UK and Wichita State contrast each other in several ways. UK, the eight-time national champion with freshman starters at every position, was the betting underdog and the lower seed. Wichita State, the mid-major program filled with experienced players all over the court, was the favorite and the higher seed. But the two biggest plays of the game fell in the hands of players that represent the anatomy of each program. Freshmen guards Andrew Harrison found James Young

UK’s game against Wright State University may be classified as a neutral first-round matchup in the NCAA Tournament, but it had the makeup of a Cats’ home game. Playing in Memorial Coliseum certainly helps in that aspect, but so does a

46-point blowout victory over the Raiders. In the university’s firstever NCAA Tournament hosted game, UK wanted to treat its home fans to a stellar first-round performance. That was accomplished by the end of the first half, when the Cats were up 5125. Eventually winning 10660, UK’s experience crushed Wright State, which was playing in its first-ever NCAA Tournament game. Compare that to the 10 tournament games that UK

has played in the past three years, and it’s easy to see why the game turned out the way it did. The Raiders’ woes can also be traced to their poor shooting. They went 19-of83 from the field while shooting 17 percent from beyond the arc. While some shots were well defended by the Cats, the Raiders also missed uncontested shots, as they went 19-of-32 from the free throw line. The Cats recorded their seventh triple-digit point game of the season.

Senior forwards DeNesha Stallworth and Samarie Walker dominated the interior with their size, while junior guard Jennifer O’Neill and freshman guard Linnae Harper used their speed to score easy fast-break points. All of that equals an overwhelmed Wright State team in a “neutral” NCAA Tournament game in Lexington. The strong performance was something UK needed to show to begin its 2014 NCAA Tournament run. UK’s primary offensive option on the play. Calipari called for a drive for Harrison. “The defender stopped him a little bit, so he gave the

extra pass,” Young said. “I shot with confidence and it felt good to hit it.” Down two points after Harrison split free throws, Wichita State called a timeout with 3.2 seconds left. Head coach Gregg Marshall set up a play for his two top scorers: senior forward Cleanthony Early and sophomore guard Ron Baker. They had hit a combined eight 3-pointers and scored 51 of the Shockers 76 points. Both were shaded by Cats defenders. VanVleet, the Missouri Valley Conference player of the year, missed the final shot that would have won the game. Calipari credited the stop to being able to switch off every screen . “We put Julius (Randle) See WICHITA on page 2

Forward Samarie Walker scored 12 points and had 14 rebounds against Wright State University on Saturday.

While defeating Wright State may not have been much of a challenge, the Cats can use the victory as a springboard into Monday’s game by sustaining their high level of confidence. “We’ve got a lot of time to do some preparation for Monday’s game,” head coach Matthew Mitchell said. “We’ll play a talented team no matter who it is, but we’ll be ready.” UK passed its first test with flying colors to continue its run to the Final Four. Hoops plays Syracuse University at 6:30 p.m. on Monday in Memorial Coliseum. No. 6-seed Syracuse defeated the No. 11-seed Chattanooga University 59-53 on Saturday. The Orange have won six of their last seven games.

Author to discuss life in Palestine, conflict

In 1997, Nelson Mandela declared, “we know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.” Seventeen years after his plea it is apparent that the freedom Mandela was talking about is still incomplete. More than 6,500 Palestinians have been killed since 2000, 1,400 of which were children. There are more than 5,000 Palestinian prisoners in captivity by the Israeli government, thousands of Palestinian homes demolished, and

hundreds of roadblocks and check points restricting free movement by Palestinians, including 61 checkpoints staffed by parliament military. Numbers often desensitize and misrepresent the urgency of a humanitarian crisis such as the one occurring in Palestine right now. It is difficult to portray the impoverished conditions that Palestinians live in using numbers alone. It is also difficult to gain proper insight of this situation without dependable reporting from the media. Due to this

scarcity of coverage on the condition of Palestine, we must rely on sources with first-hand experience to provide us with reliable commentary regarding this issue. It is with this purpose in mind that the UK Students for Justice in Palestine invited Pamela Olson, author of the award-winning book, “Fast Times in Palestine: A Love Affair with a Homeless Homeland,” to speak at Memorial Hall. Olson lived in Palestine for two years during and after

the second Intifada. She has worked as a journalist and served as the foreign press coordinator for a Palestinian presidential candidate. She will be speaking about her experiences and about life under occupation. The talk (and her award-winning book) focuses not only on violence, terror and politics, but also on daily life in Palestine. UK Students for Justice in Palestine was formed to help raise awareness about the Palestinian struggle for inde-

pendence. We as UK students see it as our purpose to educate our peers about the atrocities that have occurred, and continue to occur, in the occupied territories. We strive to provide an alternative to the dominant media narrative that casts a blind eye on oppression. We invite everyone to attend this event regardless of prior knowledge about the issue. It will be a valuable experience for all who are interested in learning about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Berkeley hires first Wikipedian-in residence By Katy Murphy San Jose Mercury News (MCT)

BERKELEY, Calif. — Citing Wikipedia in a research paper may still be a huge faux pas, but for a growing number of college students, the online encyclopedia is now the assignment. Enter 24-year-old Kevin Gorman, the new Wikipedianin-residence at the University of California, Berkeley. complex task of editing articles for the user-generated encyclopedia that gets 500 million monthly visitors. “The goal of cultural institutions is in large part to share knowledge, to make their information accessible to the general public,” Gorman says. “I think it would be really, really cool to get that information online one way or another so its access will no longer be limited to people at Berkeley who have Berkeley credentials.” Rather than write term papers to be read by a professor and forgotten, students at UC Berkeley and elsewhere are being asked to make their

mark on the site. More than 150 universities nationwide — including the University of San Francisco and California Maritime Academy — have classes producing content for the encyclopedia, according to Wiki Education, a foundation created in July to support such projects. “Students are the fuel of Wikipedia,” said Frank Schulenburg, who directs the foundation. Cal is the first American university to create a position devoted to improving the site. Some museums around the world have Wikipedians and Harvard's Houghton Museum last week advertised for one.
