GRAND ISLAND BRIDGES Location: Niagara Falls, NY Owner: New York State Thruway Authority Project Completion: 2010–2017 THE GRAND ISLAND BRIDGES INCLUDED 4 SEPARATE STRUCTURES, ALL UTILIZED A POLYESTER CONCRETE OVERLAY; 2 CONTRACTS INCLUDED PRECAST DECK REPLACEMENTS AND 2 WERE PART OF DECK REHABILITATION PROJECTS.

POLYESTER POLYMER CONCRETE (PPC) pol·y·es·ter pol·y·mer con·crete noun A Polyester Polymer Concrete (PPC) overlay is a system designed to protect bridge decks from the elements. Rock, sand, and polyester resin are mixed and catalyzed on site and used with a penetrating high molecular weight methacrylate prime coat to provide an impermeable wearing surface for the substrate bridge deck.

BEAVER CREEK BRIDGE Location: Yreka, CA Owner: California Department of Transportation Originally Constructed: 1932 Project Completion: 1983/2019 BEAVER CREEK BRIDGE WAS BUILT IN 1932 AND WAS THE FIRST BRIDGE TO RECEIVE A POLYESTER CONCRETE OVERLAY IN 1983. THIS OVERLAY WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED IN 2019 TO ACCOMMODATE A BRIDGE WIDENING AND NO SIGNIFICANT DEFECTS OF THE OVERLAY WERE NOTED AT THE TIME OF REMOVAL. IF THE NEW OVERLAY PERFORMS AS WELL AS THE FIRST, THIS WILL BE THE FIRST 100-YEAR BRIDGE DECK AIDED BY A PPC OVERLAY.

BENICIA-MARTINEZ BRIDGE Location: Benicia, CA Owner: California Department of Transportation Project Completion: 1991/2009 THE BENICIA-MARTINEZ BRIDGE WAS THE FIRST LARGE-SCALE PROJECT TO RECEIVE A PPC OVERLAY IN 1991. IN 2009, AFTER A NEW SPAN WAS BUILT TO CARRY NORTHBOUND TRAFFIC, THE EXISTING BRIDGE WAS REHABILITATED AND RECONFIGURED TO ACCOMMODATE ONLY SOUTHBOUND TRAFFIC. AS PART OF THE SCOPE OF WORK, THE OVERLAY WAS REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH A NEW PPC OVERLAY.

SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE - WEST SPAN Location: San Francisco, CA Owner: California Department of Transportation Project Completion: 2006 THE SAN FRANCISCO-OAKLAND BAY BRIDGE WAS CONSTRUCTED IN 1936, AND A PPC OVERLAY WAS PLACED ON BOTH DECKS OF THE BRIDGE IN 2006. THE DECK RESURFACING PROJECT REQUIRED MILLING OF THE EXISTING BRIDGE DECK AND REPLACING IT WITH PPC DURING NIGHTLY SHIFTS OF ONLY 5 TO 8 HOURS OF TOTAL LANE CLOSURE TIME.

INDIAN RIVER INLET BRIDGE Location: Dewey Beach, DE Owner: Delaware Department of Transportation Project Completion: 2011

COMPLETELY SEALS OUT MOISTURE AND CHLORIDE INTRUSION Impermeable. By using plastic as a binder, PPC 1121 has negligible permeability keeping moisture and chlorides from penetrating into the bridge deck. Resistant to Cracking. Equally important to permeability is the overlay’s ability to resist cracking. When overlay materials offer low permeability, they often crack, giving moisture and chlorides a clear path to causing corrosion and freeze-thaw stresses at the bond line. KBP PPC 1121 has a low modulus of elasticity and high tensile strength which allows the material to resist cracking under the stresses of heavy traffic and normal bridge deck movements.

PERMANENTLY ADHERES TO THE BRIDGE DECK Superior Bond Strength. The HMWM healer/sealer primer bleeds into concrete cracks and pores and hardens into a plastic that reacts with the resin in the overlay to give the system an integrated chemical bond to the substrate. The primer gives the PPC 1121 overlay roots into the substrate that will not allow it to delaminate without yielding well below the original bond line. Similar Material Properties. Due to a similar coefficient of thermal expansion, the PPC 1121 overlay is able to reduce shear stresses at the bond interface which often lead to delamination of other overlay materials. Long-Term Wear Resistance. Through the use of strong aggregates and resilient resin, PPC 1121 is 10 times more wear resistant than high-performance concrete. The final surface exhibits skid resistance unequalled in the industry–finding equilibrium in the mid to upper 40s, where it will remain for the life of the overlay.

Location: Oakland, CA Owner: California Department of Transportation Project Completion: 2007 THE SKYWAY SEGMENT OF THE NEW EAST SPAN OF THE SAN FRANCISCOOAKLAND BAY BRIDGE IMPLEMENTED PRESERVATION OF THE STRUCTURE FROM DAY ONE: A PPC OVERLAY BEFORE THE BRIDGE WAS EVER OPEN TO TRAFFIC.
