The capital area has a bright future. With the addition of some major new retailers and the redevelopment of others, the area has grown significantly in the past decade. Augusta is home to the largest open-air shopping center north of Boston along with several other shopping centers.

BUSINESSES IN THE REGION While government provides nearly four out of every ten jobs in the Kennebec Valley, other large employers include major distribution companies, health organizations, the state’s largest electric utility headquarters, natural gas headquarters, financial institutions, growing retail centers, and statewide non-profit associations’ headquarters. Manufacturers in the region create computer components, paper products, boats, specialty composites, high-tech and space products, products for vehicles, and a number of wood products. Health services in the central part of Maine are provided by MaineGeneral Health at its Waterville and Augusta campuses with a teaching unit associated with Dartmouth Medical School. MaineGeneral opened a stateof-the-art Alfond Cancer Care Center in Augusta in 2007 and completed its $312 million hospital in 2013 in Augusta to serve a population of 180,000 primarily in Kennebec and Somerset Counties. Other health facilitators include the VA Maine Healthcare System, Home Resources of Maine, HealthReach Network home services, and a number of others.

RESTAURANT & BREWERIES

© Gary Peachey Photography Part of traveling is seeing the sights, tasting the cuisine, and drinking local brews. Here in the Kennebec Valley, we have a variety of different local spots for all taste buds. From Downtown Hallowell, where the Liberal Cup serves no-nonsense pub-style food with their house-brewed beer, to up the river in Augusta where The State Lunch brings globally inspired elevated comfort food and imaginative cocktails. The Kennebec Valley has all a traveler needs to sit, stay and taste a while. If you’re in the mood for something a little more substantial, our local breweries have just the thing. Check out van der Brew, known for their pilsner-style beer where old-world style meets Winthrop Maine. If you want something a bit eclectic, Bateau Brewing in Gardiner has a collection of reds, goses, wheats, IPAs, and stouts. Whatever your tasting pleasure, the Kennebec Valley is a foodies destination spot.
