BROKER’S NOTE

T

here’s no arguing the fact that even though Jamaica is a tropical island, we have seasons. Mango season, pear season, ackee season, lime season, dry season and rainy season. We have just emerged from one of the rainiest times to have occurred in years, and now we are all enjoying the after effects. The waterfalls are cascading, the rivers and dams are overflowing, flowers are brightly in bloom and the landscape is lush all over. Growth isn’t just occurring in our backyards, it is occurring in all corners of the market. 2016 was an incredible year for the Coldwell Banker team, as we jumped on board to sell developments such as Tres Vistas, The Sullivan and Phoenix Estates (to name a few), sold several of the highest priced luxury villas on the market and were consistent in our townhouse, apartment and commercial sales. The market continues to strengthen and in 2017 we are looking forward to servicing developers even better than before and selling their projects in a timely manner. The first new development project of the year is Widcombe Estate, a gated 25-acre property in the hills of Kingston 6 with 32 single family lots. With the proximity to Barbican and Liguanea, great price point and a shortage of housing in Kingston 6, we anticipate these lots to be high in demand. Just a few weeks ago, the New York Times mentioned Kingston as one of it’s 52 Places To Go In 2017. We anticipate that we’ll be seeing many more tourists in our capital city and many more real estate investors. And apart from the Kingston market, investor confidence is building island-wide. New projects such as the opening of the Sandals over the watersuites and soon-to-be Spanish Court Hotel in Montego Bay, a new development in Reading, coupled with the announcement by the Minister of Tourism, Edmund Bartlett of five new hotels breaking ground in January to the plans for major development in Mammee Bay by overseas investors, 2017 is, to say the least, shaping up nicely. As the year gets underway, don’t forget to keep up with all of the happenings at Coldwell Banker Jamaica Realty through our website www.cbjamaica.com, our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages or through one of our 92 agents, who are always available to assist with any advice on buying or selling a property. We never stop moving! Until next time, walk good!

Mara Made Design’s Tamara Harding gives dicarded pieces of wood a new lease on life

27 KÚYA

W

ith just a year in business, Mara Made Designs has managed to root itself within the Jamaican minds with creative furniture and pieces made entirely from

wood. Conceptualizer of the unique furnishings and accessories Tamara Harding, is not your average woman in the woodwork industry. In fact, she may just be the only belle in an industry she describes as male-centric. This self-taught wielder of chainsaws with manicured nails initially ran an ad agency with her husband and never even dreamed of venturing outside of that until almost exactly one year ago. “I’ve always loved designing, creating and conceptualizing,”Harding says. “I just did not know what I wanted to create.” She describes her sudden decision to enter into the wood industry as an epiphanic one as though she would dabble with wood before, it never occurred to her that she could be interested in this kind of work. “After I shut down the agency, I decided to get the ball rolling on my idea to create,” Harding said. She recalls asking herself two questions which were both By Abigail Rowe Photography by Andre Rattigan

intertwined and existential ‘Is this going to bring me joy?’ and ‘am I going to feel fulfilled?’ She decided to kick things off by taking part in a Christmas fair and ended up not doing so well with what she had done. Despite this, Harding still went in search

of something as she figured she might as well put to use all the craft items she had bought for the fair and had left over. “Even then, it still had not occurred to me that this (woodwork) was what I wanted to do.”When she finally had her ‘aha!’ moment, she did not even know where to start. She recalls being asked to oversee a tiling job for her aunt and saw a tool that she was interested in. “When I went home I just started doing my research,” Harding said. “That’s how the carving began.” Despite being an untrained carpenter, Harding states that this has not hindered her in any way. In fact, she ‘finds ways around it.’ She welcomes the process of learning through trial and error and of learning how to use the various tools at her disposal. “I have three guys working with me and I was actually the one to teach them what they know,” she said. With Mara Made almost a year old, Harding states how humbled and encouraged she has been by the response of clients and the admirers of her work. “People have told me how inspired they were by my venturing into the unknown.” she said. Tamara’ s work is 80% commissioned with a yearly checkup of the pieces she’ s done to ensure that they are well-oiled and in good condition. She describes the artistic process as one that is very focused on ensuring the pieces are unique and also bearing in mind that the

pieces are designed around the wood and not the other way around. “When a client comes to me, they give me the power to create something just for them,” she says. Adding that to the fact that she is not formally trained in carpentry, Harding finds it hard to just replicate a piece found online. “I think it adds a sort of charm to things when the piece is unique.” Harding’s mind is constantly buzzing with ideas about her craft and has recently ventured into jewelry-making with wood. She is also passionate about the creativity of Jamaicans and wants to be instrumental in educating more people about forestry. “I went to Kenya a few years ago and you should see the amazing pieces artists over there create with Calabash, something we have right here in Jamaica,” she said. Harding added that there are so many talented and skillful carpenters in Jamaica who just need an avenue through which they can expand on their skills. “We see a lot of hand carved pieces but they’re only elephants or some other sort of animal,” she says. She theorized that they were trained by someone who never quite gave them the leeway to let their own creativity incite them to producing varied pieces. Harding is passionate about not just her art, but about the country and its wealth of untapped potential. She describes herself as wildly patriotic

Rousseau The past couple years have seen an influx of business (commercial and entertainment) to Liguanea, which began with Sovereign North, as Uncorked!, Domino’s Pizza, Taurus Garden, Cannonball and Roe Sushi opened their doors, generating genuine excitement on the food scene, and Eleni’s authentic French bakery opened this past summer, continuing the buzz. ceilings, raw finishes, and open floor plans provide the perfect space for such commercial spaces. Sixteen years after opening its doors as Courts, Unicomer Jamaica (which trades as Courts), closed its doors, reopening just eight months later as the Caribbean’s first Ashley Furniture Homestore. Contemporary Caribbean pieces fill this beautiful space offering Jamaicans access to a wide range of furniture, upholstery, rugs, accent and decor items. They also took the opportunity to introduce Ashley Sleep, one of the fastest growing mattress brands in the region. Just up from the Ashley store, First Global Bank has taken their “most convenient” bank statement to a whole new level. Their new home in the Liguanea Lane Plaza, next to the newly refurbished Hi-Lo supermarket, delivers extended banking hours, and a whole new level of technology to suit all customers needs. They have introduced three new banking machines including the Video Teller Machine (VTM), which connects customers with a remote teller in a highly personalized video interaction—like Skype. According to Mariame McIntosh-Robinson, First Global Bank CEO and President, the addition also of the multi-currency dispenser and the intelligent deposit ATM work hand-in-hand with the VTM to give customers access to a suite of smart machines that work to redefine the in-branch experience. “The vision for First Global Bank is to be first in convenience and best in customer experience,” McIntosh-Robinson says. “The new technology will deliver even more convenience at the new, larger branch. Combined with our late opening hours, Global Access (our internet banking platform), and our mobile banking app, First Global is arguably Jamaica’s most convenient bank,” she adds. So why this location? Peter Lindo, Head of Marketing and Corporate Communications, explains that this move comes at the perfect time as Liguanea is going through a renaissance. “With new townhouse developments and refurbishing of larger, single-family homes, the Liguanea community has also grown in population,” Lindo says. He adds that with the close proximity and shared entrance with Hi-Lo (also a member of the GraceKennedy Group), there is great opportunity for cross-marketing. To experience what is among the island’s most energy efficient and environmentally conscious buildings, head down Old Hope Road to Toyota Jamaica. “The customer experience is all that matters,” says Mick McGrane, branch manager. This, along with accessibility and convenience led to the migration “uptown”. And while the Spanish Town Road premises The Ashley Furniture Homestore is located in the former Courts building on Hope Road

still accommodates their inventory of cars, McGrane shares that since the doors opened in February 2016—on this state-of-the-art 5000 squarefoot showroom—they have seen upticks in walk-in enquiries, service and increased loyalty amongst existing customers. “The move was never about

revenue, but about improving the experience for our customers,” he said. By making the process more efficient and streamlined, Toyota has been able to funnel these savings to the customer, enabling prices to remain competitive and the service fully comprehensive. Increased revenue was a conscious bi-product of this efficiency. Energy is also a bi-product, as Toyota generates more solar energy than is required, and feeds it back to the grid. “Customers appreciate our conscious energy decisions,” he adds, and a screen in the waiting area give those interested a first-hand view of consumptions levels. “It boils down to us saving money as well as behaving in a conscious and responsible manner.” But the customer experience goes beyond an efficient tech team and transparent service procedure. Coffee (and tea) lovers have been flocking to the upstairs café for some of the best coffee in the area. etween the chirping of the birds, crashing of the waves and the vibrant hues in the surroundings, GoldenEye is the perfect North

coast hideway. Decades ago, Noel Coward reflected that his stay at GoldenEye was the happiest two months he had ever had. It may seem cliché, but once one steps through the lobby and sees the expansive view of the Caribbean Sea, there’s an immediate reaction of not wanting to leave and its quite possible that this feeling never goes away. The resort is perfection. GoldenEye is located in Oracabessa, St Mary and has an exceptional history. The property was purchased by British Naval commander Ian Fleming in 1946 and named it after a secret WWII mission. It was here that Fleming penned all of the James Bond novels and where he lived until his death in 1964. Chris Blackwell later purchased the property and realized a vision for creating a boutique resort by expanding the property and carefully integrating lagoon and beach cottages all while preserving Jamaica’s natural beauty. The centerpiece of the property is the fouracre lagoon that is perfect for exploring above or below the surface. The main beach, Low Cay, is a white sand haven. The resort has multiple pools including the iconic GoldenEye saltwater pool that extends towards the bay. Entertainment options at the resort are endless — from tennis and a variety of watersports to walking trails and several different choice of places to swim.

In January, The New York Times named Kingston as one of the ‘52 Places to Go in 2017’, recommending “SoHo-style Spanish Court Hotel” as a place to stay. Just in time to cement that designation, the hotel will inaugurate a South Beach-style, 2,000-square foot pool on the hotel’s Eastern side as this issue comes out.

Issa got an MBA directly out of college. He first drew attention, at 25, by putting up a three-story office building in just three months. One of his recent projects was the transformation of the Gore tile factory on Waterloo Road into a big-box retail space now occupied by Mega Mart. Much skepticism greeted his idea of a hotel in Kingston. Sensing the need for new, stylish hotel rooms in the city, he set out to transform the Spanish Court shopping plaza into a hotel. There hadn’t been a new hotel in Kingston in decades. It was considered outside the key hotel strip. How could it be done at a decent cost given the noncompatability of the existing building? And why give up the predictable revenue of a shopping centre for the volatile one of an untested hotel?
