Sirens Calling from the Shore

Bali Receiving More Tsunami Early Warning Sirens The province of Bali will receive three more tsunami sirens in 2014 installed in key locations by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BKMG) and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPNB). The chief of BPNB for Bali, I Gede Made Jaya Seratberana told Republika.co.id on Tuesday, December 24, 2013: “There were actually 10 locations that we

Continued from page 1 The governor does not see trash along Kuta beach as the fault of any specific individual or party, but as a natural cycle of nature that happens in Bali every December until February. “Because of this, all parties must participate (in the clean up), especially hotels and restaurants along Kuta Beach,” the Governor added.

surveyed, five in Bali's west and five in the east. All 10 locations should, ideally, be equipped with tsunami sirens, but only three have received approval from Jakarta.” The three new sirens granted by BMKG and BPNB will be installed near Serangan Island (Denpasar), Tanah Lot (Tabanan regency) and Seririt (Buleleng regency). These will supplement six existing tsunami sirens installed in Bali on Pantai Matahari Terbit (Sanur), Tanjung Benoa at the BTDC, Kedonganan, Kuta and Seminyak. At the three new locations, as with the existing alarms, maps and signs showing evacuation routes will also be installed. The care and maintenance of the new sirens will be paid by

Jakarta for one year after which that costs moves to the provincial budget of Bali. Other areas identified in the survey at considerable risk of tsunami and needing an early warning system are Pantai Lebih (Gianyar), Nusa Penida (Klungkung regency), Pantai Jasi (Karangasem), Yeh Gangga (Tabanan) and the southern shoreline at Jembrana. At 10 am on the 26th day of each month the sirens in place across Bali are sounded and tested. According to Jaya, funds have been budget to establish a temporary evacuation zone near Serangan for use in the event of a tsunami.

Meanwhile, the head of Hygiene and Parks Department (DKP-Badung) for the Badung regency, I Putu Eka Mathawan, says his office has deployed “Fast Reaction Units" to deal with the removal of the trash washing up on Bali's shores. The Units assigned to clean Kuta Beach comprises 36 personnel, 11 rubbish trucks, 5 loaders and 2 barber surf rake.

The clean up units will stay on the beach until the season ends and the condition of the beach returns to normal. Joining the paid civil servants in the beach clean up are local environmental activists, local village members and visiting tourists.

BALI THE RIGHT WAY Gday again punters and welcome to the weekly for another rip. Its been a big week in recovery stemming from the New Years eve celebration along with the Christmas ones just prior to that and the many many visitors that came up and wanted to get on and party while here for a short time. Its great when mates rock up and stay for a while, but its bloody great when they go home and let you recover. Most travellers come here and want to relax and party aliasj@kutaweekly.com hard, staying out all night then sleeping all day or laying by the pool (sounds terrible) but for those of us that have a job up here and have to commit to work, it can become rather tricky to juggle the booze and the lifestyle. There are a few exceptions to the rule, depending on what line of work you choose to be in. Then there are the retired or what I like to call the “social participants” who basically do exactly that, participate at a social level only. Some do it well and others do it like really well, like the Bannana brothers who have been banned from almost every place on the island. These two peanuts have the collective brain power of half a bowling ball and are about as much fun to talk to, as they know everything there is about the island and are the final authority on what happens and who is who. Word on the street is they got ripped off for the management rights to a small home stay and have never gotten over it. Their sour demenour infests every conversation they have with anyone and god help any bloke who puts them in charge of a going concern business as the chance for longevity for that business is about as slim as a local Bali expat cricket team making it past the second year without imploding. I believe some people are only expats in Bali because they cant make it in Australia and can manage to deal with a third world situation much easier than dealing with what we all handle as a walk in the park every day back home. I guess it wouldn't do if we were all the same and that's what makes the world spin. Anyways moving along and on the subject of cricket (which is a sport regiment I don't really follow) however it seems we have a seriously great team back at home who have taken the ashs back with gusto. Apparently my loyal readers, we have won the series five nill, leaving the English side to get on a plane and head back home with their tails between their legs. I have been taking the mickey out of our token pommie mate at the bar (we all have) who seems to think the best way to retort is to remind me that we have lost the game five or six years in a row, however Im led to believe we kept the top spot for many years prior to that. The fact that his motor bike is a tad loud and would wake up the most dedicated social participant every morning when he leaves for work aside, I think its right whack bud, we won five to zero, you lose, we won, suck eggs. Well done Michael Clark and George Bailey and to all the Aussie players won have shown the world we are not a force to underestimate. Ok folks I reckon that's about all I can muster this week as the beer belly is calling for a top up and a few beers while watching my pommie mate cry into his beer over the ashs might call for a few short jabs. I trust the most of you don't get eaten by a shark, have a truck run you over, or suffer a painful end at the hand of a crazed lunatic with nothing to lose. I hope the rest of you stay safe, happy, healthy and always try to remember, if it sounds to good to be true it probably isnt.. Enjoy Your Week, ALIASJ……… 4

Counting Conservatively Bali's Governor Wonders if I n c r e a s e d Tourist Totals for 2 1 0 4 a r e Realistic Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika is expressing pessimism regarding Bali's ability to sustain growth in tourism numbers in 2014 and beyond. As reported by The Jakarta Post, the Governor has called into doubt projections of 3.5 million foreign tourists to Bali in 2014, an increase of approximately 10% from the 3.2 million tourists expected to be the end tally for 2013.

Pastika, speaking to journalists, said he thought it would be hard to attract 3 million foreign tourists to Bali in 2014. Pastika said: “In 2014, we can't hope for more than 3 million foreign tourists as 2014 is a political year. We will be

very busy with politics. But I remain optimistic that we could reach at least 3 million.” Pastika was quick to underline that Bali would remain safe for tourists, even though it was a political year. He said that Balinese culture and a s h a r e d understanding or “local wisdom” of the importance of tourism to the economy would prevent rioting on the Island. www.balidiscovery.com

Too Many Rooms, Not Enough Guests Unregulated Increase in Accommodation in Bali Fueling Price War and Causing Local Hotel Closures Bisnis Bali reports that the unprecedented increase in accommodation is outpacing demand created by an increasing number of island visitors. As a result, price competition has become i n t e n s e w i t h s i m p l e r, traditional accommodation providers being overwhelmed by their professionally managed competitors. Locally owned hotels, unable to meet costs with declining revenues, are beginning to close their businesses. Bali arrivals for 2013 will end the year at more than 3.2 million – a record number of foreign visitors to the Island. ? ? And, despite a 13.55% increase in foreign arrivals through the end of November 2013, occupancy rates at starred hotels decreased from a number of more than 60% in 2012 to only 55.82% in 2013. The drop in occupancy is

40

fueled by largely uncontrolled growth in accommodation for rent in Bali. Accommodation data published by the Provincial Tourism Office (Diparda) claims a mere 1.3%

increase in starred, non-starred and home stay rooms between 2010 and 2012. The Diparda figures count only 26,025 rooms in 2012. The “official” figures, however, are generally seen as an unreliable reflection of the number of rooms being offered on the market, with a 20% increase over the same two-year period viewed as a truer reflection of the accommodation situation. There are other tourism

observers who put the number of rooms available on the market in Bali at 85,000. The vice-chairman of the Indonesia Tourism Association for Bali (GIPI-Bali), Bagus Sudibya, said the number of new rooms on the accommodation market in Bali is a source of concern. Reflecting o the unregulated growth in rooms, Sudibya said, “I am worried there will be a tariff war that will result in the destruction of local tourism elements.” He went on to say that there are many local hotels that have been forced to close. Meanwhile, the vice chairman of the Bali chapter of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRIBali), IGN Rai Suryawijaya, also complained that new rooms coming on line was outpacing growth in tourism arrivals. This has resulted in a price war that will in the end hurt Bali tourism and the government. www.balidiscovery.com

A Bad Case of Gas services in Bali. In the (U$560 million), the solution LPG Cooking Gas Increase of 68% Sparks Inflation Surge to that situation was not to Klungkung Market in east Bali, increase LPG prices by 68%. SBY the cost of basic commodities Across Indonesia A sudden increase in the cost of LPG cooking gas by the Stateowned Petroleum Company (Pertamina) has seen liquified gas prices increase by more than 60% and has shock wave across the Nation sparking a rapid round of inflationary price increases. The LPG increase - a decision apparently made unilaterally by Pertamina without consulting the President – shocked President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) who took to Facebook to publicly question the increase. The President, noting the growing public protest over the sudden price increase for 12 kilogram tanks of LPG, claimed that the decision made by by Pertamina now requires Presidential intervention because of its wideranging effects on society. Yudhoyono said that while he knew that the State Audit Board recorded losses of Rp. 7 billion

said that such a large and sudden increase would result in rapid increases of goods and services, creating burdens on the economically disadvantaged. Reacting to the price increase, SBY instructed the Vice-president to rapidly convene the cabinet and seek a solution that avoids inflation and burdens the public. The cost of a 12-kilogram canister of LPG prior to the increase was Rp. 70,200 (US$5.60), but is now selling for Rp. 117,708 (US$9.40). Prices in the marketplace vary, averaging Rp. 130,000-Rp. 150,000 (US$10.40 – US$12). Following the increase, prices in Jayapura (Papua) rose to Rp. 310,000 (US$24.80) for the 12-kilogram LPG canister. In Bali, the 68% increase in price has had an immediate impact on pricing of goods and

such as rice, cooking oil end eggs have increased significantly since January 1, 2013. Rice has increased 6%-11% rising as high as Rp. 9,000 a kilogram. Cooking oil has increased 20% to Rp. 12,000 per kilogram. Meanwhile, eggs have gone up 37.5% from Rp. 800 to Rp. 1,100 each. Vendors are complaining that consumers have reduced the quantity of good purchased, buying smaller amounts of key items to ensure they are still able to place food on their families' tables. Traders and consumer remain hopeful that the emergency cabinet meeting will result in a reconsideration of the economically precipitate increase in LPG cost. www.balidiscovery.com

PROPERTY OWNERSHIP IN INDONESIA As a foreigner, there is a number of ways that can lead to you owning your dream property in Bali. The best option for you will depend on your personal situation, the type of property, risk factors and the type of investment model. Even though it states in Indonesian law that foreigners are not allowed to hold a 'freehold' land title, there are ways that have been in practice for a number of years that enable foreigners to control a freehold title indirectly or to hold a leasehold title in their own name.

RIGHT OF USE (HAK PAKAI) This is the right of use over state-owned (crown land) or property owned by public or private persons/entities for a specific purpose for (generally) a finite period and occasionally for an indefinite period. This land right may not be sold, exchanged or transferred unless explicitly state in an agreement. Hak pakai may be held by and Indonesian individual or entity. Or foreigner permanently domiciled in

Indonesia, or a foreign legal entity with a representative office in Indonesia such as foreign Banks, embassies, etc.

NOMINEE SYSTEM FOR HAK MILIK This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner. Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee. The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

Baby crocodiles found in Mt Isa pool Swimmers at a public pool in north-west Queensland got a weekend surprise when they found they were sharing the water with a family of baby freshwater crocodiles. The unusual swim squad was found by a man doing laps just after the Mt Isa pool opened. The man then alerted the pool's manager Brian Rodriquez. "He said 'Brian I don't mean to alarm you but I think there's a crocodile in the pool'," Mr Rodriquez said. "We got everyone out of the water and we ended up finding five baby crocs swimming around. "Then we found another two wandering around on the concrete after that as well." It is believed pranksters released the reptiles into the pool area early one morning. In the evening another two crocodiles were found in the complex, taking the total to nine. Mr Rodriquez was tasked with catching them. He admits he did wonder whether their parents might be nearby. "They're probably between 25 and 30 centimetres, so they're not huge, probably a ruler length," he said. "But when there became more

and more I thought wow has someone played a prank or is their mummy around, or daddy around?' "From what I can see they all seem to be okay and healthy. "We took our turtles out of our tank that we have here at the pool and we put them in the water there for them to be a little bit nicer than the chlorinated water that they've been swimming around in." Unfortunately, one of the nine baby crocodiles found in the pool died overnight after spending a day in the sun. "He was right at the deep end of the pool so he had obviously travelled a fair way from where they were put into the pool," he said. "When Brian picked him up he was looking very pale, his skin was white and he was quite lethargic. "But then when we came down again this morning he'd gone to crocodile heaven."

The other eight crocodiles will be released back into the wild by a local ranger tonight. T h e p o o l managers are reviewing CCTV footage to see if they can find out how the crocs came to be swimming laps in their pool. Mr Rodriquez already has some theories of his own. "My guess would be that somebody's just jumped the fence or chucked them in the pool and they've found their way to the water," he said. "Judging by their size they'll be a few weeks old so maybe someone's picked them up, probably from the lake, and taken them home. "Then they've either dumped them here to be funny, or they weren't sure what to do with them now being that little bit bigger." Ironically, it is not the first crocodile encounter at the Mt Isa aquatic centre. Three years ago a one-and-ahalf metre crocodile was found on the grass next to the 50-metre pool. It is still not clear how that animal came to be inside the pool grounds.

This means it has an even year round temperature (hot), and a definite wet and dry season. Thus the two seasons are hot and dry, and hot and wet! Bali is close enough to the moderating effect of the equator to miss out on typhoons, tornadoes, and tropical cyclones.

China crushes six tonnes of ivory China crushed a pile of ivory reportedly weighing more than six tonnes, in a landmark event aimed at shedding its image as a global hub for the illegal trade in African elephant tusks.

14

"As well as create critical public awareness, such actions send a clear message that wildlife crime will not be tolerated," UN Environment Programme director Achim Steiner said in a statement. He said an estimated 47,000 elephants were killed in Africa in 2011 and 2012. "Yet, there is reason for optimism. International cooperation is paving the way towards improved law enforcement and increased efforts to reduce demand. These efforts need to be stepped up and strengthened to produce the desired results," Steiner said. L o n d o n - b a s e d conservation group Save The Elephants also welcomed China's action.

"With measures like this we can still save elephants from being driven towards extinction," said founder Iain Douglas-Hamilton. Some of the crushed ivory powder would be disposed of and some displayed in a m u s e u m exhibit, while the rest would be "preserved", state-run C h i n a National R a d i o reported. T h e powder can be used as an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine. China was in March named by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) as one of eight nations failing to do enough to tackle the illegal trade in elephant ivory. C I T E S b a n n e d international ivory trading in 1989, but with poaching continuing the environmental group WWF estimates there could be as few as 470,000 African elephants left. Other countries have carried out similar exercises, with the US crushing six tonnes of ivory in November. The Philippines destroyed five tonnes of tusks in June, and Kenya set fire to a pile weighing the same amount in 2011.

Clouds o f d u s t emerged as m a s k e d workers fed tusks into crushing machines in what was described as the first p u b l i c destruction of ivory in China. T h e event in the southern city of Dongguan was "the country's latest effort to discourage illegal ivory trade, protect wildlife and raise public awareness", the official news agency Xinhua said. Surging demand for ivory in Asia is behind an evermounting death toll of African elephants, conservationists say, as authorities have failed to rein in international smuggling networks. Experts believe that most illegal ivory is headed to China where products made from the material have long been seen as status symbolswith some estimating the country accounts for as much as 70 percent of global demand. Chinese forestry and customs officials oversaw the

destruction, which was shown live by state broadcaster CCTV. It reported that the ivory weighed 6.1 tonnes and had been seized over a period of years. The UN congratulated China on the "milestone event".

Reduce crime by carrying a concealed weapon SURGERY Find and circle all of the words that are hidden in the grid. The remaining letters spell a secret message.

Detroit's new police chief has actually been making a dent in their sky high crime rate and he has some wise advice for residents of the Motor City. If more citizens were armed, criminals would think twice about attacking them, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said. Urban police chiefs are typically in favor of gun control or reluctant to discuss the issue, but Craig was candid about how he's changed his mind. “When we look at the good community members who have concealed weapons permits, the likelihood they'll shoot is based on a lack of confidence in this Police

Department,” Craig said at a press conference at police headquarters, adding that he thinks more Detroit citizens feel safer, thanks in part to a 7 percent drop in violent crime in 2013. ….Craig said he started believing that legal gun owners can deter crime when he became police chief in Portland, Maine, in 2009.

“Coming from California (Craig was on the Los Angeles police force for 28 years), where it takes an act of Congress to get a concealed weapon permit, I got to Maine, where they give out lots of CCWs (carrying concealed weapon permits), and I had a stack of CCW permits I was denying, that was my orientation. “I changed my orientation real quick. Maine is one of the safest places in America. Clearly, suspects knew that good Americans were armed.” Take it from the police chief who's slowly but surely started turning Detroit around, arm yourself because when you need the police in seconds, they're only minutes away.

9Jan - 15 Jan 2014 Libra Sep 24 - Oct 23 So many people spend more time at work than they do their loved ones. So much time is invested in ensuring ends get met and proverbial wolves are kept from doors. Is that what life is supposed to be about? Is that why we're here? Of course not and developments that start this week will remind you, if reminding was necessary, of how family and relationship matters matter much more. Emotional harmony within your domestic set up can be achieved now. To make it happen, all you need to do is put less emphasis on material pursuits – for the time being, anyway! Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 22 Recent weeks have seen many people around the globe focusing on home and family matters and this theme carries on for you at this time. A home or family-based issue is likely to demand attention and what has been ignored or perhaps delayed due to festive focus is likely to make itself known to you now. Every Scorpion will have their own story to tell about changes made to their abode or a shift that requires cooperation from at least person to make happen. Opportunity exists to improve or enhance your nest. And what gets waved farewell to won't be missed.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20. Everyone has their own idea about what constitutes security and comfort. When asked, most peoples' replies surround material status and gain. We put the placating of bank managers and bosses before our own needs sometimes and during the coming week, you're likely to find yourself giving proper and serious thought to what can bring comfort to your world and raise your status in the eyes of those who truly matter. Progression on material and comfort fronts is coming. All you need to do is decide what you can do that suits you and not certain others. Taurus Apr 21 - May 21 It's fascinating watching professional stunt people leap from the tops of building and how they often land on little more than cardboard boxes covered with blankets. Even in this day and age, many stunt performers prefer something as simple as that to ensure their safety. A form of cushioning is happening in your world now. Where you once felt precarious and even frightened, you're now aware of a sense of security happening. This isn't elaborate. It's very subtle but provides a perfect level of comfort where you've wanted comfort for some time. Gemini May 22 - Jun 22 There's a skill to asserting ourselves. When need arises to do so, we assess how much energy is required to make our point or win an argument. Much depends on circumstances surrounding whatever is requiring us to take a stance but during the coming week, don't succumb to a perceived need to 'lay down the law' in no uncertain terms. Leave a bit of uncertainty in the discussion. That will facilitate an ongoing discussion and, if that can be allowed to happen, then agreement can be reached mutually rather than through anything resembling bullying tactics.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21 Do you work best under pressure? Many born under your sign tend to thrive upon the meeting of deadlines and exceeding expectations. That's just as well, because it appears there is a particular project or initiative begging not only for your attention to be completed but to be completed in a way that will surprise or shock a few people. You have a chance to shine now where a particular undertaking is concerned. Whilst it's unlikely you'll shy away from taking it on, you could have reservations about whether or not you're the best person for the job. Have faith that you are. Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 20 Among gifts you received recently, was there a magic wand? People born under your sign tend not to give in to flights of fancy or invest faith in magic to make things happen but with the Sun working its way through your sign there is strong indication you can achieve something truly outstanding – and magical, if you're willing to accept the word! There is something you're having to do alone, in isolation in some way, but don't underestimate cosmic help available to you now and how fantastic some results can be where you dearly want a fantastic result!

Cancer Jun 23 - Jul 23 Where do things go from here between you and a certain person? That's a question you've likely pondered for many a moon but it's this week's New Moon in your love and romance sector that will push decisions you've stalled making for whatever reason or reasons. The good news is, much has been building to this point. The uncertainty, tension, deliberating and assessing has been for a good reason and, now that you're armed with more information or confidence than you were, your love life can be put on a stronger - and potentially permanent - footing. Leo Jun 24 - Aug 23 Recent months have seen you asserting yourself, making a few points clear to certain people and even dictating how things are going to be where certain arrangements are concerned. You've not had everything your way, Saturn has seen to that, and have also had to apply more patience and tolerance than you'd have preferred to invest. This week's developments should make clear how taking a step back and putting others' needs before your own can bring positive results. It needn't be difficult. Give it a try. You'll see very soon what a difference doing so can bring.

Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19 When's the last time you tried to run up a downward escalator? The task isn't an impossible one but it's not the easiest thing to do. Recently, life has probably felt that you were doing precisely that in some ways and the cosmic shift happening now will do much to reassure you that willingness exists on the part of certain unhelpful or uncooperative people to be more obliging and accommodating. You've done your bit terms of encouraging and placating certain others. Now, it's time for them to prove their loyalty or support. Developments this week should confirm this.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 23 We all like to achieve goals singlehandedly sometimes. There's much to be said for identifying what we want, making it happen through our own efforts and accepting praise or reward. Sometimes though, need exists for us to enlist the help of certain others and the coming week could make clear how, to make something special happen, you might need to request assistance in a particular area. The more willing you are to ask for assistance, the more likely you'll not only get it but discover a network of contacts who can help in ways you hadn't thought they might.

Pisces Feb 20 - Mar 20 The current cosmic picture of very reminiscent of the saying about taking a bull by its horns. In this case though, you needn't be concerned about finding a bull. It appears you're about to take the initiative in ways you either chose not to in recent weeks or encountered restriction that prevented you from doing so. This week's developments should provide insight and reassurance that a situation that has been dictated to you in terms of how things were going to be has more flexibility and fluidity than it appeared to have. You can finally change a situation to suit you now.

"We'll only have a g r e e m e n t w i t h environmentalists when we kill all the wolves here," said Jeremiah Martin, a hunter from Salmon. Online petitions criticizing the contest garnered tens of thousands of signatures and opponents have threatened a boycott of Idaho's famous potatoes. The derby is thought to have been the first state-wide competitive wolf shoot in the continental United States since 1974, when gray wolves in the Lower 48 came under the

federal Endangered Species Act protections after being hunted, trapped and poisoned to near extinction. Wolves in the Northern Rockies, including Idaho, and in the western Great Lakes, lost the protection of the act in recent years as states pushed for hunting and trapping rights. The O b a m a administratio n is now proposing to strip wolves of federal safeguards nationwide. Coyote s a r e considered pests and are allowed to be shot on sight in much of the U.S. West. A U.S. judge rejected a request by conservation groups to block the Idaho hunt, which was staged on a national forest near where federal wildlife managers reintroduced wolves to the Rocky Mountain West in the mid-1990s. WildEarth Guardians and others had argued that the U.S. Forest Service did not issue proper permits for the event, but the judge said the contest was similar to activities like picnicking that do not require such special permits. Bethany Cotton, wildlife program manager for WildEarth Guardians, said the legal battle will go on. "A killing contest has no place on public lands," she said.

The coyote and wolf derby was promoted by ranchers and h u n t i n g enthusiasts as a form of family recreation aimed at reducing the number of p r e d a t o r s threatening livestock and biggame animals like elk prized by hunters. It was condemned by conservationists as cruel and unsportsmanlike. The weekend hunt on national forest land ringing the Idaho mountain town of Salmon drew 250 contestants seeking cash and trophies in categories ranging from bagging the largest wolf to shooting the most female coyotes. Children as young as 10 were invited to compete in a youth division. The event was sponsored by Idaho for Wildlife, which fights "all radical anti-hunting and anti-gun environmentalists," according to its executive director Steve Alder. Adler said none of the teams managed to kill a wolf, but 23 coyotes were killed, making it a far cry from the "wolf killing spree" predicted by opponents. "It shows hunting is not an effective tool to eliminate wolves.

We're going to have to take more aggressive action," Alder said. Hunters brought coyote carcasses to Salmon to be measured and counted and potentially sold to fur buyers. Several carcasses were piled in

China has held seven people in southern Guangdong province for injecting dirty pond water into lamb meat to swell its weight and raise its price, state television reported in the latest food scandal to hit the world's second largest economy. The suspects slaughtered up to 100 sheep per day at an illegal warehouse, pumping bacteriaridden water into the meat before it was sold at markets, food stalls and restaurants in major cities such as Guangzhou and Foshan. China has been hit by a number of food safety scandals, from deadly chemical-laced dairy products to recycled "gutter oil" used for cooking. Last week, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, apologized after a Chinese supplier

of donkey meat snacks was found to have mixed fox meat into the product. Authorities raided the illegal lamb meat abattoir in Guangdong at the end of December, finding around 30 carcasses injected with water, 335 live sheep, forged inspection stamps, and equipment to inject water into the meat, the report showed. Each sheep was pumped with up to six kilograms of water just after being slaughtered, to

add extra weight. Close to 40 percent of Chinese think food safety is a "very big problem," the Pew Research Centre said in a 2013 report. This has weighed on Chinese firms, from milk powder makers to meat producers, boosting international rivals. Late in December, China said it would tighten milk powder rules in a move to boost confidence in domestic producers and allay longstanding fears around food safety in its $12.4 billion infant formula market. KFC parent Yum Brands Inc, McDonald's Corp, French grocery chain Carrefour SA and other global firms have been caught up in food safety scares in China.

Woman receives 'poo cake' at engagement party A New Zealand woman who had a disagreement with her engagement party's cake maker has received a lessthan-pleasant surprise. Micaela Harris apparently had a cake r e a d y f o r h e r engagement party, but says her sister was willing to go the extra mile and organise a second one. However, her sister seemed to have a disagreement with Emma McDonald, the owner of Oh Cakes. This was where the fun began as McDonald decided to give the brideto-be a special piece of poopy pie. "It was a weird situation,"

Harris told of the moment the cake was opened up in front of over 100 guests. Underneath the "magnificent wrapping" was a poo-shaped cake with a flag sticking out of it reading "eat s**t". "At the time my sister didn't even know what was going on," Harris added. "I think it [the

disagreement] was taken too far. As a business owner you come across customers you don't like but you have got to take the highs and the lows, got to suck it up." McDonald posted media coverage of her daring stunt to her Facebook page, adding that it has been a messy blessing in disguise. "Nothing really negative that I've seen apart from a few who didn't read and understand it properly. Seems to be popping up everywhere... business opportunities have been thrown my way as well." "I feel [Harris] got what she deserved," she said.

Chris Rogers nearly misses party as Aussies celebrate Ashes win with fans at Opera House AUSTRALIA have celebrated their Ashes triumph with thousands of fans at the Sydney Opera House but opener Chris Rogers nearly missed the party. The veteran lefthander, who finished the back-to-back Ashes series as the leading run-scorer across both countries with 831 runs, wasn't present when the Australian squad were introduced on stage alongside Prime Minster Tony Abbott. The rest of the squad were given a heroes welcome by the crowd, with some players looking slightly worse for wear after two days of partying since the SCG triumph which sealed a 5-0 series whitewash. According to the MC, Rogers had "other commitments" but the sheepish 36-year-old batsman admitted upon his arrival

that he had "just slept in" following another big night of celebrations. Teammate Ryan Harris joked that he was fearing the worse for Rogers. "We thought he was in jail actually." Team management weren't able to get in contact with Rogers until they arrived at the Opera House. An official then went to pick him up from the hotel and he appeared later to sign autographs and pose for photos with eager fans. Asked if Darren Lehmann

way in, Rogers said: "I'm surprised he's here." He then conceded he'd be doing his best to avoid him. "I haven't seen him yet so I'll probably keep away from him," he said. "These moments don't come along too often, if ever ... (but probably) enjoying it too much." Coach Lehmann was far from impressed at the tardiness but in the grand scheme of things, team management were treating it as a minor incident. Man of the series Mitchell Johnson received the biggest roar of the day when he was introduced to the crowd and described the joy he took in shutting up England's support group, the Barmy Army. "The Barmy Army have given me a hard time over the years, so it was nice to be able to turn around put five fingers up (at the SCG) and say 5-0 (to them),"

Golden win for Marinko Matosevic to end Australian drought at Sydney International IT took almost three days but finally Australia had something to celebrate at the Sydney International. Marinko Matosevic broke the Australian drought late this afternoon, beating German Florian Mayer 6-2 4-6 6-3. Fellow Australian Sam Groth could have earned the honour of being the first Australian to notch a win at the tournament but he was beaten earlier in the day.

Victorian Groth, who made the quarter-finals of the Brisbane International last week, fell to Czech player Radek Stephanek 67 7-6 6-2.

H i s l o s s followed on from the exits of Jarmilla Gajdosova and Matthew Ebden on Monday. Gajdosova, Australia's sole representative in the women's draw, was beaten by American qualifier Lauren Davis, with 26-yearold right-handed Matthew Ebden bowing out the same day when beaten by Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

Pre-marital sex immoral, says Indian judge A New Delhi judge says pre-marital sex is "immoral" and against the "tenets of every religion". J u d g e VirenderBhat made the remarks while acquitting a man accused of rape, ruling that sex between two adults on the promise of marriage did not amount to rape. The complaint was filed by a woman who alleged wrongdoing by a 29-year-old man working at a multinational firm with whom she had sex after he promised to marry her. The judge said a "grown-up, e d u c a t e d a n d o ff i c e - g o i n g woman" who has sex on the assurance of marriage "does so at

her own peril". "She must understand the consequences of her act and must know that there is no guarantee that the boy would fulfil his promise," the ruling said. "She must understand that she is engaging in an act which not only is immoral but also against the tenets of every religion. No

religion in the world allows premarital sex." Pre-marital sex has been traditionally disapproved of in the largely conservative and religious Indian society. Last year, a court in New Delhi s a i d l i v e - i n relationships were immoral and an "infamous Western cultural product". In 2010, the Supreme Court dismissed 22 criminal cases against Tamil actress Khushboo who spoke in support of the right of women to have premarital sex. The court also backed the right of unmarried couples to live together.

PIN only credit cards on way The 40 per cent of credit card users who sign for their transactions will soon have to start remembering their p e r s o n a l identification number as the days of signature verification draw to a close. Australia's financial institutions will move to PIN-only transactions in the second half of the year, in a bid to boost credit card security at the point of sale. The move, recently authorised by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, is expected to save about $75 million in credit card fraud every year in Australia. M a s t e r c a r d , Vi s a a n d American Express led the push for

the change, claiming fraud dropped significantly after Britain moved to a PIN-only system in 2006. Managing director of RFI Consulting, Lance Blockley, who is heading the group overseeing the initiative, said it had become increasingly evident that retail staffs were lax when it came to checking credit card signatures. Under the Electronic Funds Transfer Code of Conduct, it is the responsibility of the merchant to check the

validity of every signature. He said consumers were sometimes made to bear the cost of the fraudulent sale if they did not inform their bank of their lost or stolen card in a timely manner. But, in most cases, it was the merchant or the bank which had to suffer the cost of signature fraud. Australian Retailers Association spokesman Russell Zimmerman said it would significantly boost credit card security. "I know someone who worked in the accounts department of a major company, and for several years he signed for his credit card transactions as Mickey Mouse," Mr Zimmerman said. Obamas' Christmas gift sent to wrong family A Chicago-area family got a belated Christmas surprise this week a book of family photos from the White House meant for the Obama girls' godmother, according to media reports and the White House. Alane Church, who lives north of Chicago, said that her family got a box of Christmas presents a week late from an uncle in New York. When they opened it, they found an extra gift at the bottom a "beautiful personal" book. Church said the gifts appeared to have been re-boxed by the U.S. Postal Service. The photo book was

addressed to "Mama Kaye + Papa Wellington from Barack, Michelle + the girls." "Mama Kaye" is the Obama girls' godmother, Eleanor Kaye Wilson, who lives in the south Chicago suburbs. "It's very special, very special private moments of their year of 2013 together," said Church. She said the gift would be

sent on to Wilson. A White House o f f i c i a l acknowledged the misdelivered gift. "There was an errant delivery, but we're appreciative of the effort under way to make sure the gift arrives at the intended destination soon," the official said in an e-mail. Neither Wilson nor Church could independently be reached for comment. Sue Brennan, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service, said in an e-mail that the agency "takes issues like this very seriously and we are investigating the matter."

French bulldog, pups worth $80,000 stolen.

The missing dogs include El Che, who is named after Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara and won awards at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in 2010 and the French Bulldog Club of America National Specialty Show in 2009, according to owner Marcelo Cicuta. While Cicuta was ringing in the New Year at a friend's kennel, thieves broke into his house and likely used a pillowcase to carry the dogs away, police said. The 15 stolen puppies are 16 and 27 days old, Cicuta said. A third litter of five puppies and two older female dogs were left behind. French bulldogsthe thirdmost commonly stolen breed in the United

Hunter kills Bigfoot A s e l f proclaimed Bigfoot hunter claims to have shot and killed the creature and says he will tour the US with the body to prove his claims.

A Miami man returned from a New Year's Eve celebration to find his prize French bulldog and two litters of puppies, valued at $80,000, stolen from his home, police said.

States, according to the American Kennel Club can fetch up to $2,500 each. The police report valued El Che at $50,000 and his offspring puppies at $30,000. But the dogs' worth is far lower without papers proving their pedigree, the kennel club said. "Breeders do a lot of research of pedigrees to look at ancestors and their traits," American Kennel Club spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said. "These criminals figure they'll steal these dogs, sell them below market value, and make a quick buck."

T h e Te x a n claims to have shot Bigfoot and released a picture he said was of the creature. On his website, he says: "I tracked a creature. I shot it," he said. "With tears in my eyes, I watched it take its last breath." "Bigfoot is not a tooth fairy Bigfoot is real," he told a TV station in San Antonio. "The most important thing

to me is being vindicated, letting people know that I am the best Bigfoot tracker in the world and it's not just me saying it." He says he lured the creature into a trap using ribs from a local supermarket that he nailed to a tree. He said his hands went numb as he aimed

the ribs off the tree and walked away. "That night he became known as 'The Best Bigfoot Tracker in the World' and changed history the way we know it," the account proclaims. He has been linked to a previous Bigfoot hoax when his claim to have found a body turned out to be an ape costume. This time, he says it's fact: "It is the real deal," he told the station. "It's Bigfoot and Bigfoot's here, and I shot it and now I'm proving it to the world."

Press photo reunites man with family

HARDEN UP !! CIALIS 80mg FROM 10K CHINESE HERBAL VIAGRA FROM 10K ORIGINAL VIAGRA @ 20K

A man who was living on the streets was reunited with family when aphotographer snapped him. Nicholas Simmons disappeared from his parents' house in a small upstate New York town on New Year's Day, leaving behind his wallet, mobile phone and everything else. Four days later, an Associated Press photographer, looking for a way to illustrate unusually cold weather, snapped his picture as he warmed himself on a steam grate a few blocks from the US Capitol. Paul and Michelle Simmons saw the photograph after it was brought to their attention through a Facebook page set up to help find their son, according to police and family friends. The photo, taken which showed Simmons with his unshaven face pressed against a grate outside the Federal Trade Commission. He wore a ski jacket and a hood over his head. A thick grey blanket covered his lower body. Martin was assigned to the White House that weekend, but with President Barack Obama still on vacation in Hawaii, she spent the day looking for shots that would illustrate the cold weather. That is how she found Nick Simmons, in an area where homeless people often gather when it is frigid outside. She found a cluster of men huddled around the grate, introduced herself and started taking pictures. Then she noticed one person in particular, huddled under a blanket. "It struck me how young he was," Martin said. "I again introduced myself and shook his hand. He said his name was Nick." Martin finished shooting, sent the pictures to the wire and then called it a day. The next day, she received a message via Twitter. Police picked Simmons up and took him to a hospital, said police Captain Patrick Phelan. Simmons' father, Paul, and older brother Paul Jr arrived in Washington and were reunited with Simmons at the hospital, said long-time family friends Peter and Cindy Gugino. Martin, the photographer, said the episode serves as a reminder to journalists that every person they encounter has a story to tell.

then began playing a lot of rugby and really starting to enjoy it. "He put a lot of time into his rugby and was light on his feet and that reflected in his performance. "Rugby is his first priority. He knows his focus is here. Everything he has done has demonstrated he understands that." Graham nominated front row and the midfield as the positions most up for grabs. "I would like to think all positions are competitive," he said. "If everyone is fighting for positions we are in a good spot. "It is fair to say though we have five front-rowers, six or seven in the back three and three international centres. "They are physically and importantly mentally refreshed. We have five weeks until our first trial. "It is a sprint now."

It is a hunger found throughout the Reds group and one that has Reds coach Richard Graham frothing at the potential this season holds with captain James Horwill officially resuming training Tuesday morning, one week ahead of time. The Reds squad, minus most Wallabies, returned to training this morning following two weeks holidays. They had already trained for 11 weeks prior to Christmas. Every member of the Reds who was on the Wallabies' Spring Tour has completed sessions since returning to Australia. Cooper is only training part-time

but considering he played nearly every minute of the Spring Tour it is a great show of his desire for a second Super Rugby premiership. Graham said Cooper's January 29 boxing bout against Warren Tresidder at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre was not a distraction. "Quade is not due back until next Monday and he has already done two sessions with us prior to Christmas and was back again yesterday," Graham said. "There's always a good transference between form in the Wallabies tour and form going back into the Super Rugby season. "The likes of Quade, Will (Genia) and James were all in form towards the back end of that tour. "For Quade it was a period where he went through injury and
