Bali: Still a Rice Bowl Bali Rice Production in 2013 Making Island a Net Exporter The Central Statistics Bureau for Bali (BPS-Bali) recorded an increase of 1.92% in the 2013 production of unmilled dry rice for the island totaling 16,562 tons. The increase yield brought the total rice production of Bali for the year to 822,115 tons of unmilled dry rice. BPS-Bali reports that rice production for the first four months of 2013 increased 1.32%, while for the second four months the increase was 0.92% and for the final four-month period of that year the increase in rice production was Continued from page 1 A s r e p o r t e d b y Metrobali.com, an expert on public transportation and infrastructure A.A. Putu Ngurah Wirawan, said speaking on Saturday, March 15, 2013: “The reason why people are still reluctant to take the public bus is because of the lack of attention that has been paid to bus stops. For example, on the Tohpati to Nusa Dua route, the bus stops are not convenient for passengers. The bus stop located on the side of

3.29%. As reported by NusaBali, Panusunan Siregar of BPS-Bali attributed Bali's increase in rice production in 2013 to an additional 3,335 hectares of land put under cultivation, bringing the total hectares dedicated to rice production to 19,669. the road are very narrow. Passengers waiting for the bus are left standing in the heat and dust created by passing vehicles. This is why people don't want to ride the Sarbagita Bus System. In order to make public transport in Bali more attractive to the public, a new approach using Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is now being put in place where bus stops are being combined with locations shared by hotels, malls and shops to improve the convenience of using public

Most of Bali's rice in 2013 was produced in the regency of Tabanan (26.5%), followed by Gianyar (20.94%), Buleleng (12.78%). The remaining five regencies of Bali all contributed less than 10% of the total rice production for the island, with the lowest contribution coming from Denpasar (2.97%). Based on an estimated annual per capita consumption of 130 kilograms of rice, Bali consume 455,000 tone of rice each year, a total well below the 822,115 tons produced in 2013. www.balidiscovery.com transportation. Praising the Sarbagita Bus System in general, Wirawan said the routes traveled by the busses do not meet the aspirations of the public and the bus stops in inconvenient and poorly planned locations are combining to dissuade the public from taking the bus. www.balidiscovery.com

BALI THE RIGHT WAY G,day again punters and welcome to another crack at it. The island is gearing up for the day of silence with all the devout booking their tickets to somewhere else for a few days while it passes. Must be nice to be so engrossed in the culture here that the best you can do is to leave the island for the day of silence. I think a few too little of us expats, tend to remember that the island and the Balinese have been following this custom for a million years and that it is these customs, aliasj@kutaweekly.com that made the island so desirable to all of us in the beginning. I am a firm believer in trying to embrace as many as we can while being here. I'm not saying get out the tooth file and start evening up the smile (as much as a few of you could do with a quick touch up) but at least in part, try to understand the culture and customs that little bit more. It's not all about getting a wage earning position in a restaurant and pretending that you own the place, or spending what little money you have at the bar every day making you feel bigger than you actually are, it's about embracing the people and their ways. Anyways enough said and moving on. The first round of A.F.L. has slipped past and if my tipping is anything to go by, I'd say I'm about fucked this year. I did hear a few tipsters say they may have gotten 2 correct for the round, so I would be surprised if many got a full tote. Let's hope the season gets a heap better over the next few weeks or I think I might have to start following lawn bowls instead. The booby prize for the week goes to Richmond for the tragic display over four quarters I have seen in a long time and as much as I hate to say it, they are followed very closely by the Mighty Pies who need to lift their game about 400%. Pathetic as far as professional teams and team management and players go…..Next, Saint Patrick's Day came and went in a sea of green beer with not so many venues doing anything special on the day. A few had a couple of banners flying and the odd green beer was spotted on the street, but for the better part of the day it was generally quiet. I did drop into one pub on the strip that threw on a sausage sizzle and somehow had green sausages, which seemed like a good enough reason for me to stay and enjoy a swag of beers until the wee hours. If I don't hear the words “top of the morning to you” for another year I'll be a happy camper. It's not the words, it's the terrible attempt at an Irish accent over and over again. A fairly big day was had by all and sundry and I look forward to next years Saint Patty's day bash. On a slightly negative note, which I don't like, this week has seen the conspiracy theory's flying around like a bat out of hell regarding the Malaysian airlines flight that went missing last week. It seems now my loyal readers that the aircraft was actually hijacked ?? and was flown at under 5000 meters to escape the radar. I find it strange that Myers and Coles can track your mobile phone and know when you are entering and leaving their shops, but a world class, top ten airline can't track a 600 ton airplane?? Wonders never cease to amaze me. I hope that all passengers from the flight are well and safe and just waiting for a rescue mission. My bet is that a movie will be made about the ordeal and is probably having contracts drawn up right now to secure the copyright for the same. Don't we love Hollywood. (Gee this week is all about the customs and culture in Bali isn't it)

Garuda Launching New Planes on New Routes Garuda Indonesia's Quantum Leap Mean Longer Leaps on Long Haul Routes with New Aircraft The national airline Garuda Indonesia is scheduled to commence direct nonstop daily service between Jakarta and Amsterdam in May 2014. The new service, bypassing traditional technical stops in the Middle East, will be made possible with the delivery of new Boeing 777-300s. Beritasatu.com quotes the deputy-director of marketing at Garuda, Djunaidi Satrio, said in Bali on Saturday, March 15, 2014, “Next month, our newly ordered airport will arrive and begin operations in May.” The Boeing 777-300 aircraft

will fly the non-stop stretch from the Indonesian capital to Amsterdam in 12 hours. Satrio said the new aircraft part of the Airline's Quantum Leap transformation that includes 27 new airplanes on order by Garuda Indonesia set to arrive in 2014. The new planes coming on line

include two Boeing 777-300s, four Airbus 330s, twelve Boeing 737-800s, three CRJs and six ATR 72-600s. G a r u d a Indonesia is also eager to tap into the Chinese travel market. The general manager for Garuda in Beijing, Asa Perkasa, outlined how 100 million Chinese citizens are expected make an overseas trip this year. “Those visiting Indonesia do not represent 1% of this total. Because of this, we need to exploit this market, especially with the Chinese economy booming at the moment,” said Perkasa. www.balidiscovery.com

Australians apply in vain for hangman job Two Australians have applied in vain for Sri Lanka's hangman job after the island nation's last official executioner got upset on seeing the gallows for the first time and quit. "Two Australians have sent emails to one of our departments saying that they are interested," ChandrarathnaPallegama, commissioner general of prisons said. "One is a system administrator and the other had not mentioned the job he is doing," he said. "We have not called the

applications, moreover we do not have any provisions to recruit foreigners." Pallegama said the last hangman, who was third most qualified among 176 applicants for the job, quit after getting upset at seeing the gallows. Two hangmen chosen late last year failed to show

up for work. The Indian Ocean island nation, a predominantly Buddhist country, has not carried out an execution since 1976, despite the fact that there are at least 405 convicts on death row awaiting a final ratification. But an alarming rise in child abuse, rapes, murders and drug trafficking since the 25-year war against Tamil Tiger separatists ended in 2009 has prompted some lawyers and politicians to push for the death penalty to be reintroduced.

Dog saves owner from choking to death A woman told today how her dog saved her life when she was choking to death on a sweet. Te r r i f i e d Rachel Hayes, aged 40, was doubled over gasping for breath after a strawberry pastille got stuck in her throat in the kitchen at home. But worried springer spaniel Mollypops accidentally performed the Heimlich maneuver on her owner and the sweet popped out. Rachel said: "She's an absolute hero. "It happened when I sat down to have a sweet. "It got stuck in the back of my throat and I couldn't get it back up. I couldn't phone anyone because I couldn't talk.

12

"I was having difficulty breathing but Mollypops' sixth sense kicked in and she knew I was in trouble. "She was insistently trying to help me and I kept pushing her away. "But she kept coming around me because she could see I was trying to get something from my throat. But I kept pushing her away because I couldn't really breathe. "Then Mollypops came up behind me put her paws on me and bashed on my back with

such force the sweet came out. "I just burst out crying and said, 'I love you.' She came over for a cuddle and I cuddled her. I told her she was a hero. "I think she's glad to have me alive, otherwise she would have been left all on her own. But I don't think she knows quite what she has done. "I was crying and shaking because I thought I was going to die. "I gave Mollypops lots of cuddles and, as a thank you, I bought her a squeaky chicken and some doggy sweets." Rachel has lived alone with Mollypops in D r e f a c h F e l i n d r e , Carmarthenshire, since her mum died nearly three years ago.

North Melbourne coach Brad Scott with queries over number of players ahead of Round 1 clash with Essendon UPGRADED rookie Joel Tippett is in the frame to make his North Melbourne debut in the Roos' season-opener against Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Friday night. Coach Brad Scott said Tippett — the 25-year-old younger brother of Sydney forward Kurt — and fringe tall Daniel Currie would be in the squad, while young gun Luke McDonald would also prompt a selection headache. Ruckman/forward Majak Daw will be left out after enduring a frustrating pre-season as he has recovered from a knee injury. Key defender Nathan Grima sought physio treatment on his foot during a training hit-out yesterday, and Tippett, who has spent the past two seasons in the SANFL, would be the likely inclusion if Grima does not come up. “He (Tippett) has been in terrific form in the pre-season and taken some really big jobs on the

opposition's key forwards,” Scott said yesterday. “He'll come up off the rookie list. “Dan Currie will definitely be in the squad. He probably hasn't transferred his training form into game form, but we're really looking for that third key forward slot at the moment and Dan has been the one that has jumped up and grabbed that opportunity more than anyone else — and he also gives (Todd) Goldstein ruck relief as well.” Scott said McDonald, son of former Roo and current club executive Donald McDonald, was a genuine selection dilemma. “The tradition in Round One — do you go with your experienced, hardened players — but then again, Luke has stood up to every challenge that we've put before him,” he said. Scott said Daw had been

thrown into the pre-season game against Hawthorn in a bid to get some match-time into him, but said he would not pick him when he was clearly still underdone. “The biggest problem we've had with Majak is availability — he's played a bit in the pre-season but his training has been really interrupted,” he said. “I'm loath to pick Majak this week just based on lack of preparation — it's really frustrating because I see him as a big part of our future, but we just need to get some continuity.” Captain Andrew Swallow looked to be moving well in his restricted training as he continues his recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon, but he is unlikely to play before about Round 5. Young forward Tom Curran will be placed on the long term injury list

Fremantle has gone from the beast to beauty, writes Sam Edmund in The Field Marshal IF Fremantle last year had a face only a mother could love, after one game this year it is on the beauty pageant runway. In what could prove a radical shift in R o s s L y o n ' s philosophy, Round 1 has shown us the Dockers could be Beauty and the Beast in the same package. Y e s , t h e suffocation techniques of Lyon's Dockers still put a shiver through rivals. Yes, the manic defence-first philosophy has been brutally effective. But let's be honest, the words “Fremantle” and “good to watch” haven't exactly been joined at the hip. Until now. After last year's Grand Final loss to Hawthorn, the overwhelming question aimed at the Dockers was whether a side that ranked 13th for points scored (91 a game) had the offensive artillery to go all the way? They could stop, but could they score? After taking flight in a Round 1 scorching of Collingwood at Etihad Stadium, the answer would have to be a resounding yes. Some will say it's only the first game, others will say Collingwood was woeful, but the statistics lift the lid on the purple machine that is now mixing brute force with sex appeal. Now when Fremantle wins the ball in defence, it is thinking

16

handball more often than spreading the ball by foot, which it most in the AFL last year. Then it does what many dare not — drives forward directly down the centre corridor. The

Dockers were a high corridor team last year, using the middle 34 per cent of the time, but that figure ballooned to 40 per cent in Round 1. To put that in perspective, the next highest was Sydney at 32 per cent. When the Dockers won the ball last year, they were hellbent on holding on to it; going backwards, sideways, anyway — as long as they kept it. Against Collingwood, it was extraordinary how direct they were.

Last season, Lyon's men went long only 35 per cent of the time, ranked 13th in the league. Against the Magpies, they bombed it long 48 per cent of the time, 4 per cent more than any other team on the first weekend. The direct approach generated 65 inside-50s, more than the Dockers had in any game on their run to last year's Grand Final. Coast-to-coast goals aren't exactly a Fremantle specialty either. In fact, from all the kick-ins last season, it mustered only 13 goals. Against Collingwood, it kicked 3.2 from that source. Was it a Round 1 anomaly? Was it more b e c a u s e o f Collingwood being so poor than Fremantle being so good? None of that really matters because even more so than in the Dockers' big wins last year, this was a new level of risktaking. It was very unFremantle and it was brilliant. Lyon, who told guests at the club's season launch he wanted an extra two goals a game, may have taken his players to adventure world. In his four Grand Final losses with St Kilda and Fremantle, Lyon's side finished with 68, 68, 52 and 62 points. You get the impression that if the Dockers make it to the big dance this year, the ''points-for'' column may be just as impressive as the ''points-against''.

Robbie Farah tells rival NRL clubs to stay away from in-demand Tigers youngster James Tedesco JAMES Tedesco has admitted his future is up in the air as Tigers captain Robbie Farah warned other clubs the electric fullback is a wanted player at his current club. Te d e s c o h a s started the 2014 season in hot form after his promising c a r e e r h i t a speedbump early last season when he suffered a serious knee injury. After recovering f r o m a k n e e reconstruction, Tedesco has clearly rediscovered his electric speed. He was one of the outstanding players at the Auckland Nines and has kicked off the season with two tries in two weeks, linking impressively with fellow Tigers young gun Luke Brooks. The fullback's hot form comes at the right time for his own career, with the shop window wide open as he comes off contract at the end of this season. Speaking exclusively to Fox Sports News on Tuesday, Tedesco revealed his future was unclear - his manager Sam Ayoub scouring the market to get an idea of what clubs might be interested. “I'm not sure at the moment. I haven't really

18

discussed much at the moment, I'm leaving it with Sammy Ayoub, my manager, and he's taking care of things at the moment,” Tedesco said. “I'm just worrying about footy and leaving that behind. I'm not letting that get to me. I'm just focusing on my footy and training

hard and getting ready for next week. “I'm a Wests junior so I grew up through the Wests ranks - SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup - and Wests Tigers as a club. “I'd definitely love to stay here, I've got a lot of good mates at the club, so we'll just have to wait to see how the contract negotiations go.” It is understood Tedesco is high on the Bulldogs list to succeed former Dally M Player of

the Year Ben Barba after the Belmore club failed to replace the Broncos' new ace before this season. However, with Andrew Fifita joining the Dogs on a big money deal last week, and James Graham signing an upgraded four year contract, it is unclear how much money Des Hasler has left to throw at a fullback. The Tigers have also got some big decisions to make with Tedesco's fellow star c u b s D a v i d Nofoaluma and Marika Koroibete also coming off contract. In an interview for Fox Sports show Monday Night with Matty Johns, Farah joked that Tedesco's re-signing was such a high priority, it would cause “big problems” between the star hooker and the manager he shares with Tedesco, Ayoub, if the fullback was allowed to leave. “Any time there's a quality player out on the market there's going to be people chasing him,” Farah said. “But look, he's a local junior, he's a player we want to keep, and I know the club will be doing everything they can to keep him. “It's fair to say I'll be in Sammy's (Sam Ayoub) ear and if James does leave there'll be big problems between me and Sammy.”

South Australia's Daniel Worrall suspended for scratching image of penis into pitch Worrall curated the creative graffiti after a Futures League — effectively the state s e c o n d X I competition — match between Victoria and South Australia at Toorak Park in Melbourne last week. The ground was due to be used for a Grade cricket final that weekend, which was seen as enough of a reason for match referee Daryl Cox to propose a

two-match suspension on the 22-year-old paceman. Worrall was reported for “acting in a way that a) was unbecoming of a representative, and b) brought the game of cricket into disrepute”.

The young quick pleaded guilty to the charge but did not agree with the penalty, which led to a hearing being held on Tuesday morning. Unfortunately for Worrall, the original penalty was upheld and the Redbacks player will be made to serve his suspension at the start of next summer. The crude markings were presumably Worrall's way of celebrating a victory after SA beat Victoria by 67 runs. Worrall took five wickets for the match.

St Kilda rule out defender Sam Fisher, Eli Templeton and Dee Alex Georgiou win Round 1 rookie promotions ANOTHER star player will be missing from the R o u n d 1 Melbourne and St Kilda clash, as both clubs promote rookies to fill the void created by injuries. Sam Fisher is the latest be ruled out of Saturday night's game and faces a battle to be fit for Round 2 as he struggles to overcome a back injury. The Saints will be without Fisher, Adam Schneider (back) and Jack Steven (foot), while Leigh Montagna and Lenny Hayes will miss through suspension. Redounding defender Sam Gilbert is not on St Kilda's injury list, however he is yet to play a game this pre-season due to a foot

injury. Goal sneak Eli Templeton has been promoted from the rookie list in place of ruckman Lewis Pearce (back) and the Tasmanian is likely to make his AFL debut against the Demons. The scruffy-haired Templeton was the No. 3 pick in the 2014 rookie draft and impressed with two soccer goals in St Kilda's NAB Challenge game against the Western Bulldogs. The Demons are also missing a host of key players with

Jesse Hogan (back), Colin Garland (ankle), Chris Dawes (calf), Mark Jamar (foot), Max Gawn (limited preseason) and Mitch Clark (personal reasons) all unavailable. Clark was today placed on the long term injury list and mature-aged recruit Alex Georgiou elevated onto the senior list. Georgiou has impressed during the pre-season playing in a key-defensive post and the 24year-old is a near certainty to make his AFL debut on Saturday night. In other rookie news, Adelaide has placed captain Nathan Van Berlo on its long term injury list, but no replacement has been named and North Melbourne have update Joel Tippett in place of Tom Curran.

Fans tune into NRL over GWS with the Eels proving the favourites GREATER Western Sydney won big time on the field but lost badly off it. It seems no matter how bad Parramatta play, fans in Sydney's west still love watching their Eels. GWS enjoyed a historic win over Sydney Swans but only 63,000 people in Sydney watched it, just 1.3 per cent of the metropolitan area's 4.6 million population. The GWS-Swans game attracted 20,000 viewers on Fox Sports and another 43,000 on 7Mate. On the same day across town, 94,000 viewers tuned in to Fox Sports 1 to watch the Roosters belt Parramatta by 52 points.

But rugby league shouldn't celebrate too loudly. National television ratings released yesterday showed 259,00 Fox Sports subscribers watched the Giants' historic win, while 216,000 tuned in to watch Parramatta play. Overall, ratings for NRL matches failed to bounce back after a lacklustre round one, although Channel 9 did record small increases on Friday night and Sunday afternoon. The GWS game started at 4.30pm, while Parramatta kicked off at 7.30pm. But the mere fact 43,000 more fans nationally watched the AFL on the same day is a concern for rugby league in western Sydney. The Giants have a no-name roster, while

22

Parramatta boast stars like Jarryd Hayne and Will Hopoate. But it should be noted that GWS fought back brilliantly in a thrilling game, while the Eels were smashed. “If GWS have a better season and Parramatta don't, then that will start to put pressure on rugby league,'' Eels legend Brett Kenny said. “It is something rugby league has to keep an eye on. “If the Eels and the other western Sydney clubs don't perform then it will hurt rugby league. We can't drop our guard and say 'it will be fine because we are rugby league'. The AFL is slowly trying to take over in Sydney.” Ratings for the Swans game were solid in Melbourne because of the first appearance of Buddy Franklin. NRL games on free-to-air posted small an increase in ratings. The Souths-Manly game rose 0.4 per cent on the corresponding match last year, while Brisbane's game against North Queensland at Suncorp Stadium increased by 3.4 per cent compared to round one in 2013. The Sunday game between Wests Tigers and Gold Coast Titans also recorded a small rise in ratings compared to round two last year. Canberra's win over Newcastle on Sunday night attracted 172,000 viewers on Fox Sports, while Carlton's match against Port Adelaide, which overlapped the Hunter Stadium game, drew a television audience of 275,000. The AFL also beat rugby league in a Saturday night battle. Melbourne and Penrith was watched by 236,000 fans — the best NRL result of the weekend — while the Gold Coast-Richmond match attracted 284,000 viewers. Nearly 150,000 subscribers watched St George Illawarra and New Zealand Warriors play on Saturday afternoon.

Bulldogs hooker Michael Ennis searches for longterm NRL deal similar to Storm captain Cam Smith BULLDOGS captain Michael Ennis has revealed he is looking for a long-term contract, similar to Cameron Smith's, to take him to the end of his career. In a potential bombshell, Ennis said he isn't sure whether his plans and the club's recruitment strategy are compatible. Ennis also responded to reports his club is close to signing boom No.9 Michael Lichaa from Cronulla. “It's a terrific football club, but at the end of the day, I've got a young family and it is going to be probably one of (the last) if not the last contracts I do,” Ennis told Sky Sports Radio on Tuesday. “I just need to make sure I'm doing the right things in that regard. I still feel like I've got plenty of good football left in me.

28

“To be honest, I've started some conversations at the moment with the Bulldogs. “That's only started in the last couple of weeks so it's in the early stages.

“I love the club. It's given me everything that I could have asked for and more since I arrived from Brisbane at the end of 2008. “It looks as though they've signed a young hooker and I still feel I've got plenty of good football left in me. “You saw Cameron Smith sign a lengthy contract (with Melbourne Storm) last week and I also feel I can play another three or so years. “So we'll just see where that takes me and whether that fits in with the club's plans. I'm not too sure at the moment. “Hopefully we'll sit down over the next couple of weeks and try and sort that out.” The Bulldogs have recently re-signed star prop James Graham and recruited Cronulla star Andrew Fifita, putting pressure on their salary cap.

U.S. Mint to sell curved Baseball coins

The United States Mint will begin selling special curved coins this month to honour the National Baseball Hall of Fame, with a design representing the inverse images of a ball and mitt, U.S. Mint officials said. The $5, $1 and half-dollar coins, plated with gold, silver and alloy, are in production at the San Francisco U.S. Mint and will be sold online starting on March 27, agency spokesman Michael White said. Some 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 $1 silver coins and 750,000 half-dollar alloy-clad coins will be produced. They will be the first curved coins, concave on the heads side and convex on the reverseever minted by the U.S. Mint, according to a statement on the agency's website. The image of a baseball glove with the words "liberty" and "in God we trust 2014" across the palm is featured on the face of the coins, which commemorate the Baseball Hall of Fame's 75th year in 2014. A baseball is depicted on the tails side, with the words "United States of America" and the coin's value inscribed on it. The tails side also includes the Latin words for "Out of many, one." Cassie McFarland of San Luis Obispo, California, submitted the winning mitt design for the coin in a 2013 competition that was judged by the Department of the Treasury. U.S. Mint

Sculptor-Engraver Don Everhart designed the baseball and the inscriptions on both sides of the coins. The coins were created as part of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin act of 2012 to help fund operations of the independent, notfor-profit educational institution that runs a museum in Cooperstown, New York. Surcharges on the pieces will be $35 for each gold coin, $10 for a silver coin and $5 for each half-dollar coin and will authorized for payment to the Hall of Fame, the U.S. Mint said. Two Australians have applied in vain for Sri Lanka's hangman job after the island nation's last official executioner got upset on seeing the gallows for the first time and quit. "Two Australians have sent emails to one of our departments saying that they are interested," Chandra rathna Pallegama, commissioner general of prisons said. "One is a system administrator and the other had not mentioned the job he is doing," he said. "We have not called the applications, moreover we do not have any provisions to recruit foreigners." Pallegama said the last hangman, who was third most qualified among 176 applicants for the job, quit after getting upset at seeing the gallows. Two hangmen chosen late last year failed to show up for work.

Submerged car now selling on eBay This car was almost completely submerged in the Somerset floods and now it doesn't work but that hasn't stopped it selling for hundreds of pounds on eBay. Hubert Zajaczkowski'ssilver Seat Toledo became an iconic image for the flooding after it was abandoned over Christmas and swamped by water. The world's media captured its roof poking out from the fast-moving water and it seemed beyond any kind of salvation. But Mr Zajaczkowski has since listed the vehicle on eBay, under the title: "Famous flooded Seat Toledo from Somerset." He makes no secret of the fact it won't turn on by naming the item's condition as both "used" and "not working".

BioMicrobe

But having gathered more than 70 bids, the total is now up to a whopping ÂŁ550. The five-door car has 110,000 miles on its clock, is missing most of its doors, comes with a layer of moss and grime and has extensive water damage but none of that is stopping the bids stacking up. The auction's proceeds will reportedly go to an organization set up to help victims of flooding. Local people and MPs in the Somerset Levels area accused the Government and Environment Agency of ignoring repeated calls to dredge water last month, which had built up to startling levels in the area. Parts of the area are still badly affected now.

Rudest 'C word' added to Oxford

A word, considered by many to be the rudest in the English language, has been added to the Oxford Dictionary. The offensive word, which has been added under the 'C' section, joins nearly 900 other terms added to the reference collection. Other new additions include bookaholic, e-ticket, bestie and honk, along with crap shoot, wackado and wackadoodle.

Dictionaries expert Katherine Connor Martin said the silliness of the words themselves contributed to their mildly contemptuous effect. "Similar-sounding nonsense words were used as refrains in popular songs like Doo Wacka Doo in the early 20th century, but it isn't certain that these directly impacted the later development of wackadoo and wackadoodle, which didn't become common until the end of the century," she said. "The phrase crap shoot arose in American English in the late 19th century to refer to a game of dice (or craps). Nowadays, that original use is relatively rare, but the term has become very common in a figurative use, denoting a situation

or undertaking regarded as uncertain, risky, or unpredictable." Other additions this year include Old Etonian, bathroom break, beat boxer and scissor kick. Four times a year, the Oxford English Dictionary chooses a few new words to add to its pages. The last update saw words like twerk and selfie.

Bolan's death and end of the band. Marc Bolan and his girlfriend Gloria Jones spent the evening of 15 September 1977 drinking at the Speakeasy and then dining at Morton's club on Berkeley Square, in Mayfair, Central London. While driving home early in the morning of 16 September, Jones crashed Bolan's purple Mini 1275GT into a tree (now the site of Bolan's Rock Shrine), after failing to negotiate a small humpback bridge near Gypsy Lane on Queens Ride, Barnes, southwest London, a few miles from his home at 142 U p p e r Richmond Road West in East Sheen. While Jones was severely injured, Bolan was killed in the crash, two weeks before his 30th birthday. After Bolan, whose death ended the band, four other band members met

20 Mar - 26 Mar 2014 Libra Sep 24 - Oct 23 'I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate!' If anyone ever said such a nonsensical and contradictory statement to us, we'd be inclined to ignore it and them. They clearly aren't as authoritative as they believe themselves to be. Your biggest challenge this week surrounds a need to recognize how a particular situation is being made to appear bigger and more serious than it really is. Someone is failing to grasp how inconsistent and unhelpful they're being. Their bark really is much worse than their bite. You are in a very strong position to ignore them.

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20 'It's not about winning or losing, it's about how you play the game'. We've all had these or similar words said to us at some point. Do people really mean such words or are they said only to console someone who 'lost'? Nobody likes losing. Even someone who claims they're not concerned with winning or losing would prefer to win if given the choice. You can gain admiration and respect through displaying humbleness this week. You are expected to react in an opposite way toward something. Surprise a few people and you will succeed in a way delights you.

Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 22 We hear people say 'anything worth having is worth fighting for'. Most of us know from personal experience that what we want rarely comes without some level of struggle. When it does, we're suspicious or feel diminished pride through not having to work as hard as we were prepared to work to attain it. This week, don't be wary or dismissive of something being presented to you in a way you never expected to receive it. You might have pinned your hopes on a development unfolding in a certain way but be flexible to it having its own idea of how it should be appearing. Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21 Think back to when you were a child and refused to eat certain foods because, well, you didn't really know precisely why you didn't like them but had decided clearly in your mind that you didn't. Over time, you have probably grown to like some of what you once disliked. Coming developments see you growing used to or possibly even closer to something you believed to be unsuitable, unhelpful or inappropriate. All you need to do is be willing to adjust an expectation. The more you can be flexible and relaxed now, the more progress you'll make.

Taurus Apr 21 - May 21 In Dr Seuss's 'Green Eggs and Ham', a character refuses to be coerced into eating green eggs and ham offered to him by an overly persistent character. Our central character insists his decision has been made and is final, claiming any effort to change his mind will be futile but he succumbs eventually. You appear determined to stick rigidly to a decision made recently. Don't rule out the possibility that you could change your mind but only to accommodate an opportunity you are unlikely to have envisaged. Gemini May 22 - Jun 22 By simply putting one foot in front of another, we can go pretty much anywhere if we're determined to get there. One step becomes two, becomes four and suddenly we're out the door and heading in a direction. Don't concern yourself with how or how quickly you are going to get a particular result. It really is a case of slow and steady effort producing the best result and the sky promises that, very soon, you'll have good reason to smile. A process simply needs time to develop a bit further. Try to curb your impatience this week. Cancer Jun 23 - Jul 23

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 20 With each new day, we're presented with opportunities. We spot some of them some of the time but invariably fail to spot all of them. That doesn't make us insensitive or 'out of touch'. The really good news is, some opportunities refuse to be ignored and if we miss them the first time, they often make a point of returning in the hope that we notice them a second time. Coming developments bring an opportunity to do precisely that – seize at least one opportunity you thought had disappeared or was no longer available to grasp!

Human beings are, and always will be, complex creatures. We posses varying levels of ability in terms of masking thoughts, feelings or emotions. We say one thing when we mean another. We refrain from speaking our minds through fear of hurting or upsetting others. An opportunity is presenting itself for you and a certain person to reach a much-needed agreement. An important discussion has been put off long enough. Real, tangible and long-term progress can be made if some established barriers are replaced with honesty and sensitivity.

Leo Jun 24 - Aug 23 When we were children, it didn't take us long to learn that insects black and yellow in color should be given wide berth or circular things on the top of an oven can be painful to touch when glowing red. Experience is, and always will be, the best educator. It will soon become increasingly clear what lesson you have learned recently and how you can apply this new-found knowledge to embark upon a much-needed fresh start in a particular area of your world. A warning sign exists but it is nothing more than that: a warning sign to be glanced at only.

Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19 There is much in life that lies in the eyes of beholders. How do you believe you are seen in the eyes of certain others? What role or roles are you obliged to fulfill? Coming developments are likely to give plenty of food for thought with regard to responsibilities and obligations you have and to what level you're able to placate certain people. Somehow, somewhere, pretence is occurring that doesn't sit well with you. You understandably have concerns about how much longer you can maintain it. You can relax in the knowledge that it won't be for much longer. Pisces Feb 20 - Mar 20 Your intuitive abilities cannot be ignored. You are blessed with insight that many wish they possessed and, during the coming week, you're being given a chance to make full use of your ability to see beyond the obvious. For some time, you've been in a situation that has confused and possibly angered you with regard to how something so obvious to you is something someone else is oblivious to. It is what you can see that someone else can't that offers the greatest advantage to progress you're keen to make. Allow what needs to be seen to make its way to you.

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 23 There's no future in archaeology. Although what's unearthed can be of value to us in both the present and future in terms of helping us to understand more about our past, archaeologists are more focused on what has happened than what could happen. Your past plays an integral part in your future. A previous lesson or experience can be drawn upon. Apply this to the opportunity presenting itself and you can make satisfying progress where you've struggled recently. Let the opportunity manifest a bit more before thinking you can see it fully.

NYEPI (SILENCE) DAY Nyepi is a day to make and keep the balance of nature. It is based on the story of when King Kaniska I of India was chosen in 78 A.D. The King was famous for his wisdom and tolerance for the Hinduism and Buddhism societies. In that age, Aji Saka did Dharma Yatra (the missionary tour to promote and spread Hinduism) to Indonesia and introduce the Saka year. The lead upto Nyepi day is as follows: Melasti or Mekiyis or Melis (three days before Nyepi) Melasti is meant to clean the pratima or arca or pralingga (statue), with symbols that help to concentrate the mind in order to become closer to God. The ceremony is aimed to clean all nature and its content, and also to take the Amerta (the source for eternal life) from the ocean or other water resources (ie lake, river, etc). Three days before Nyepi, all the effigies of the Gods from all the village temples are taken to the river in long and colourful ceremonies. There, they have are bathed by the Neptune of the Balinese Lord, the God Baruna, before being taken back home to their shrines. Tawur Kesanga (the day before Nyepi) Exactly one day before Nyepi, all villages in Bali hold a large exorcism ceremony at the main village cross road, the meeting place of demons. They usually make Ogoh-ogoh (the fantastic monsters or evil spirits or the Butha Kala made of bamboo) for carnival purposes. The Ogoh-ogoh monsters symbolize the evil spirits surrounding our environment which have to be got rid of from our lives . The carnivals themselves are held all over Bali following sunset. Bleganjur, a Balinese gamelan music accompanies the procession. Some are giants taken from classical Balinese lore. All have fangs, bulging eyes and scary hair and are illuminated by torches. The procession is usually organised by the Seka Teruna, the youth organisation of Banjar. When Ogoh-ogoh is being played by the Seka Teruna, everyone enjoys the carnival. In order to make a harmonic relation between human being and God, human and human, and human and their environments, Tawur Kesanga is performed in every level of society, from the people's house. In the evening, the Hindus celebrating Ngerupuk, start making noises and light burning torches and set fire to the Ogoh-ogoh in order to get the Bhuta Kala, evil spirits, out of our lives.

Nyepi On Nyepi day itself, every street is quiet - there are nobody doing their normal daily activities. There is usually Pecalangs (traditional Balinese security man) who controls and checks for street security. Pecalang wear a black uniform and a Udeng or Destar (a Balinese traditional "hat" that is usually used in ceremony). The Pecalangs main task is not only to control the security of the street but also to stop any activities that disturb Nyepi. No traffic is allowed, not only cars but also people, who have to stay in their own houses. Light is kept to a minimum or not at all, the radio or TV is turned down and, of course, no one works. Even love making, this ultimate activity of all leisure times, is not supposed to take place, nor even attempted. The whole day is simply filled with the barking of a few dogs, the shrill of insect and is a simple long quiet day in the calendar of this otherwise hectic island. On Nyepi the world expected to be clean and everything starts anew, with Man showing his symbolic control over himself and the "force" of the World, hence the mandatory religious control. Ngembak Geni (the day after Nyepi) Ngembak is the day when Catur Berata Penyepian is over and Hindus societies usually visit to forgive each other and doing the Dharma Canthi. Dharma Canthi are activities of reading Sloka, Kekidung, Kekawin, etc.(ancient scripts containing songs and lyrics). From the religious and philosophy point of view, Nyepi is meant to be a day of self introspection to decide on values, eg humanity, love, patience, kindness, etc., that should kept forever. Balinese Hindus have many kind of celebrations (some sacred days) but Nyepi is, perhaps the most important of the island's religious days and the prohibitions are taken seriously, particularly in villages outside of Bali's southern tourist belt. Hotels are exempt from Nyepi's rigorous practices but streets outside will be closed to both pedestrians and vehicles (except for airport shuttles or emergency vehicles) and village wardens (Pecalang) will be posted to keep people off the beach. So wherever you happen to be staying on Nyepi Day in Bali, this will be a good day to spend indoors. Indeed Nyepi day has made Bali a unique island.

My travel plans for 2014 I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone. I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older. One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! I may have been in Continent, and I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

Little Johnny says: "I wanna hit the powerball and be a billionaire, go to the most expensive clubs, find me the finest whore on the planet, give her a Ferrari worth over a million bucks, an apartment in Copacabana, a mansion in Paris , a jet to travel throughout Europe, and an Infinite Visa Card, and bang her three times a day in the most exotic places on earth". The teacher, shocked, and not knowing what to do with this horrible response from little Johnny, decides not to acknowledge what he said and simply tries to continue with the lesson .... "And how about you, Sarah?" "I wanna be Johnny's whore. A government survey has shown that 91% of illegal immigrants come to Australia so that they can get back to seeing their own doctor. I got sacked from my job as a bingo caller. Apparently "a meal for two with a hairy view" is not the way to call number 69. I've just fitted strobe lights in the bedroom. It makes the wife look like she's moving during sex. Two Thai girls asked me if I'd like to go bed with them. They said it would be just like winning the lottery! I agreed, and they were right. We all stripped off and to my horror, we had six matching balls! A Indonesian man has died whilst training to be a skydiver. The School of Diving said they had no idea why his snorkel and flippers did not open.

This structure is a regularly practiced procedure in Indonesia, whereby the foreigner nominates and Indonesian representative to acquire the land and to hold the 'freehold' title (Hak Milik) on behalf of the foreigner. Ownership of the land is transferred from the previous owner to the Indonesian nominee. The foreigner and the Indonesian nominee then sign an agreement which recognizes the Indonesian nominee as the legal owner of the property whilst declaring the foreigner as the rightful owner of the property. This agreement denotes that the Indonesian nominee will carry out any directives from the foreigner regarding the land. This agreement must always be concluded in the presence of a public notary.

Model sues for $500,000 A model is suing Playboy after she was smacked on the bottom with a golf club while posing for a rude picture. Elizabeth Dickson was accidentally whacked by DJ Kevin Klein as she lay on the grass with a golf tee between her cheeks. She was left with a huge bruise and says she has suffered stress, pain and loss of earnings as a result of the injury. The 28-year-old has now filed a lawsuit against Playboy Enterprises suing the company for more than $500,000. In her claim she says she was invited to participate in the Playboy Golf Finals at a course in California During the event she was invited to pose for a photo with DJ Kevin Klein. ''Plaintiff was requested to lie down

and pose for a photograph with defendant Kevin Klein. The photograph was supposed to depict the plaintiff lying flat on her stomach with her buttocks partially exposed,'' the lawsuit reads. ''A golf tee was then placed between the cheeks of her buttocks and a golf ball was balanced on top of the tee.'' Klein was supposed to stand over

Dickson and pose as though he were poised to hit the ball, the lawsuit says, but instead it is claimed that Klein ''swung the golf club and struck plaintiff on the buttocks causing her injuries and damages." Ms Dickson says she suffered severe bodily injuries some of them permanent, pain, suffering, anxiety, worry, medical and incidental expenses, and loss of earnings and earning capacity. A spokeswoman for Playboy has not yet responded to a request for comment. Alleging battery and negligence, Dickson is seeking $500,000 in general damages, plus medical and related expenses, punitive damages and costs of the suit.

Python eats dog tied to kennel A NSW woman has endured a nasty shock after finding her pet dog, that had been chained in its kennel, swallowed by a python. The Lismore woman approached the kennel of her Chihuahua-Maltese cross, only to find a 2.5 metre carpet python in its place, with the bulge of the dog's body still visible, The woman, who had chained the dog up so it did not stray out to harm nearby wildlife, was initially upset and shocked, before contacting the Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service (WIRES). When volunteers from WIRES

arrived, they found the python still in the kennel with the chain emerging from its mouth. A volunteer from WIRES handles the python with care. Sue Ulyatt, WIRES Northern Rivers secretary, said “She realized that she had made a dreadful mistake. She hadn't

thought about the possibility of a snake taking the dog. “The lady went out to let dog off the chain, but instead of the dog being on the chain, it was large carpet python. “It's only the second incident like this we've had in over 10 years. Usually it's the other way around, the snake comes off second best,” added Mrs Ulyatt, who also indicated that the snake may require surgery to remove the chain before being released back into the wild. "Chaining up a dog in a wildlife area is certainly a responsible thing to do, but the dog was too small. It should have been inside."
