Nyoman Nuarta, the designer of the monument, confirmed the project is now half-completed with deliveries of statue elements arriving once every three weeks from Bandung, West Java in a convoy of 12 trucks. If completed on schedule in 2016, the GWK statue will stand 126 meters high with a wingspan of 64 meters. The total cost of the project is put at Rp. 450 billion (US$39.1 million). The new monument is located some 300 meters from t h e e a r l i e r, t e m p o r a r y monument. The final construction is comprised of two parts. The 3,000-ton upper structure made of copper with the crown and the mythical Garuda bird highlighted in gold. The pedestal on which the monument stands occupies a

space of 30,000 square meters and house a multi-purpose conference room, a gallery and an Indonesian cultural museum. The breast of the Garuda Statues will hold a highelevation viewing gallery providing a views to both sides of Bali. First started in the early 1990s, the GWK monument is a

joint share holding between the Bali Tourism Development Corporation (BTDC) (18%) and private investors 82%. The project has stalled on several occasions in the pasr due to a lack on ongoing funding and disagreements between competing factions. www.balidiscovery.com

BALI THE RIGHT WAY Gday again fellow punters and welcome to the weekly. We are getting closer to the 400th issue at the paper now which is a great milestone for us. There will be so many sponsors and driving factors that will need to be thanked when we actually do pass the 400 mark. I am told there will be a few drinks to be had at a roof top venue somewhere in Kuta for all concerned, so I will keep you informed on that. The people that have helped get the newspaper to aliasj@kutaweekly.com the point that it is, are so many and varied that it should be a good little party. I can't thank the loyal sponsors enough for sticking with us and making the rag what it is today. We are growing now to the point where we are about to be putting 3500 copies per week in and around Bali. There are many mouths that make many promises on this island and generally speaking the smart people tend to weed out the crap talkers and understand rudimentary business acumen and prefer to work with that instead. There is an old saying that some of you may know and that's “The poor man pays twice” I'll let you think about that one. Moving along it seems the island is full of very proud Blues fans and I think they would all be happy with the win they took last week at the State Of Origin. From memory the Blues did this last year and still ended up with no cigar. They haven't taken a flag for almost 10 years so, let's hope they have a better run this time round and that 2014 is their year to win. I'm told there is an entire generation of youngsters that have never seen the Blues win and after thinking about it if you are between the ages of 9 and probably 13 you wouldn't remember them winning so I have to agree with the stat, as much as it annoys me. There aren't many things that annoy me but when it comes to your favorite team winning there is always room to have a gripe, the thing is some of the expats up here don't know when enough is enough. Moving along I see the powers that be on the island have done a rather swift job in so far as trying to sort out the little run of crime that was being plastered all over face book and other public media forums. I saw a picture of a group of thugs that have been caught and are now under arrest. The police had them lined up ready for the picture and looked very proud of themselves. I have a strange feeling that they may have been already onto the problem prior to any ranting online, which in this writers opinion would have done nothing other than to hinder any operation. Do the people that post in continuum understand that the guys that are working in groups stealing hand bags and doing petty crime can use Facebook also and are probably members of the same groups online… At the end of the day old fashioned police work prevailed and a few pinches happened and yes Bali is that much safer again. This sort of thing happens all over the world everyday and as much as it isn't very nice, it isn't going to completely stop. If you think Bali is bad then I suggest you walk the back lanes of Hong Kong late one night or early one morning after you have been drinking heavily and see how long the wallet lasts in your back pocket. Try Perth for that matter. Ok folks that again about all I have to say this week and I trust that the most of you stay safe, happy healthy and always try to remember,” it's impossible” said your pride, “it's risky” said your experience, “It's pointless” said your reason, “Give it a try” whispered your heart, Enjoy Your Week. Bali's Coming Glut of Condotels Most of Bali's Choice Seaside Property Now in the Hand of Non-Balinese Property Developers Bali Post quotes a Balinese property investor, I Gede Suardita, observing that the price of seaside property in Bali has “gone crazy” because of the fierce competition by developers to grab up every remaining piece of seaside land in Bali's south. A s a n a t u r a l consequence of the "land grab" Suardita is predicting that a large number of condotels will be built along all of Bali's beaches in the coming few years. Suardita, who serves as the vice-chairman for the Payments and Taxation Committee of the Bali Branch of the Indonesian Real Estate Association (REI-Bali),

emphasized that most seaside lots of land are owned by investors from outside Bali, saying the shoreline from Kuta Beach to Soka Beach is now in the hands of investors. Adding: “We have merely become spectators because we lack the capital. This is even more the case as tourism development surges, further fueling the appetite for business

development in Bali.” The director of PT Ski Land Development, Gede Semadi Putra, also admits that most investors and developers of condotels in Bali originate from outside the Island. At the same time, he concedes that these new investors are helping to power the Balinese economy with their new injections of cash. Semadi said he hopes Bali's new investors will follow zoning and building regulations. He also called on the local governments to closely supervise new projects and take stern action when violations are discovered. www.balidiscovery.com

Grazing Closer to Home Bali Farmers Association Wants Imports of Vegetable, Fruits and Meat Controlled The Indonesian Farmers Association for Bali (HKTI-Bali) is calling on tourism businesses, especially hotels, to be required to absorb 100% of local farm products. Professor Dr. I Nyoman Suparta, the chairman of HKTIBali told Bali Post: “They (the hotels) import a great deal from overseas, but we in Bali also have an agricultural sector that must be protected. One way to do this is by absorbing Bali's farm produce.” Suparta claims that the tourism sector in Bali only manages to absorb 50-60% of the products produced by Bali's farmers. B a l i ' s t o u r i s m s e c t o r, however, does manage to absorb 80% of the poultry and eggs produced on the Island. “We want that 100% of the (tourism's) need for agricultural products be taken from local farmers. It should not be like the current situation where many

locally produced agricultural products remain unused. For instance, we have a high production level of local beef,” explained Suparta. Suparta called on the tourism sector not to take cover by citing the weaknesses of Bali's farming sector. Adding: “I am not anti-import, but we must think more about how to make agriculture and livestock profitable and productive.” An agricultural expert from Bali's Udayana University, Putu Anom, said that contracts for the mandatory use of local agricultural products can be made between the Island's tourism sector and HKTI-Bali, supported by

government regulations. A n o m a d d e d : “ To u r i s t s holidaying in Bali also feel deprived, complled to eat products imported from their home countries. Tourism operators must take note. Why not use local produce and fruit in accordance with their seasonality?” Anom insists that foreign tourists visiting Bali come in search of new flavors and experiences not available in their home country. This curiosity, he adds, extends not only to cuisine, but also includes matters of accommodation, fruits and produce. Saying that there is great potential for the absorption of local agricultural products, Anom said: “(Use of local products) needs to be supported by regulations limiting the importation of fruit, vegetables and meats. The province needs to make rules requiring the purchase of local agriculture and limiting the use of imported products.” www.balidiscovery.com

Indonesia's Bubbling Ring of Fire Mount Sangeang Vo l c a n o E r u p t i o n Disrupting Eastern Indonesia and Darwin Flights The eruption on Friday, May 30, 2014 of the Mount Sangeang Volcano – a mid-sea volcanic island north of the Island of Sumbawa – continues to disrupt both domestic and international flights in the region. The majority of flights operating in and out of Darwin in northwest Australia were cancelled on Saturday, May 31, and Sunday, June 1, 2014. Darwin airport officials confirmed that domestic and international Jetstar services, and domestic flights operated by Virgin and Qantas were cancelled on Saturday and Sunday. Fights operated into Darwin by Malaysian Airlines, Silkair and Qantas were also affected by the eruption. Darwin flight operations appeared to be returning largely to normal on Monday, June 2, 2014 Jetstar resumed all flight to and from Darwin at 4:30 local time on June 1, 2014. Two volcanic cloud created by

the volcano and threatening aviation is moving in a southeasterly direction over the Kimberly's and Top End of Australia. The clouds affecting Australian airspace measured 14 kilometers across and at its uppermost reach was 50,000 feet high. A third cloud, northeast of Bali, will not affect Australian airspace but may pose a hazard to some domestic and international flights operating into Bali. The volcanic cloud that had moved close to Bali on Monday is causing delays and cancellation on some Australian flights to Bali and a number of domestic Indonesian flight to eastern Indonesia. Denpasar's flight status board on Monday, June 2, 2014, showed many Australian flights

delayed or cancelled notices, with the situation changing by the hour. In Indonesia the volcanic cloud caused Garuda Indonesia to suspend a number of its eastern Indonesian flight. Saturday and Sunday flights and their returns legs that were cancelled included: Denpasar to Labuan Bajo (Flores), Ende (Flores) and Kupang Denpasar to Tambolaka (Sumba) and Kupang Jakarta to Mataram (Lombok) and Kupang Jakarta to Denpasar and Kupang Members of the public with flights destination in Easter Indonesia or Australia are reminded that the situation remains fluid and travelers should contact the airline involved for the latest update on schedule changes. The head of the Special Committee on Labor Regulations, Made Retha, told NusaBali that while such a certificate was not required in the past, foreign

Survivor Rounds: State of Origin takes toll on NRL premiershp pace setters TWO rounds in to the Origin Survivor Rounds and the annual clash between New S o u t h Wa l e s a n d Queensland has already started to have its effect on the NRL premiership. How clubs survive the Origin period has become vitally important with Origin taking an increasingly heavy toll on clubs who lose players via representative selection or through injury sustained playing for the Blues or Maroons. With the launch of the first of our Origin Survivor Ladders, which tracks how teams progress during the crucial rounds 11 through 18, it's plain to see Origin has taken its toll already. Three of the competition highflyers in the Sea Eagles, the Bulldogs and Storm have already lost their first matches without their Origin stars. The Bulldogs in round 11 lost 32-12 to the Roosters in round 11 but had to make do without Josh Reynolds, Trent Hodkinson, Tony Williams and Josh Morris. Having sustained a PCL injury in Origin I,

Morris will now miss more games for the Dogs including this week's clash against Manly. The Sea Eagles also haven't come out of their opening encounter of the Origin rounds unscathed with a 36-10 thrashing at the hands of the Brisbane Broncos. The Broncos might have won regardless but Manly did suffer without chief playmaker Daly Cherry-Evans and Anthony Watmough, both injured in Origin I. The Broncos also lost Justin Hodges following Origin with an ankle injury. P L AY E R S P U S H F O R STAND-ALONE ORIGIN The Storm were the team knocked around the most by Origin and it showed in their display against the Cowboys who won 22-0 FIRST IN INDONESIA

playing in front of their home crowd. After breaking his arm in Origin I, the Storm's chief playmaker Cooper Cronk is now out for anywhere between six weeks and three months while an injury to Billy Slater's AC joint prevented him from backing up against the Cowboys. It forced a major reshuffle with Cameron Smith moving to halfback but the odds of overcoming major losses like Cronk and Slater against a Cowboys outfit with all their Origin stars were always going to be long. By resting Jarryd Hayne the Eels suffered accordingly and were thrashed 38-12 to Penrith. The Rabbitohs, Roosters, Broncos and Warriors are the teams that have coped best during the Origin Survivor Rounds, winning both their rounds 11 and 12 matches. Foxsports.com.au and Monday Night with Matty Johns will update and feature the ladder each week to reveal how the makeup of the Premiership is being shaped during the Origin period.

Five things you should know about the NBA Finals series ANTICIPATION is building for the NBA Finals rematch between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat. The series starts in San Antonio on Friday (AEST). Here are five things you should know. GAME 1 FACTS The Spurs have never lost Game 1 of an NBA Finals. And Miami star LeBron James has never been part of a Game 1 road victory, in any round. San Antonio — which has never played an NBA Finals game while facing a deficit in the series — has won each of its five Game 1's in the title round, doing so by an average of 10.4 points per game. Including his time in Cleveland, James has been on teams that opened playoff series on the road seven times. They're 0-7, losing by an average of 12.3 points. But in four of those seven occurrences, including all three times it's happened with Miami, James and his team eventually won the series. ALL THEY DO IS WIN Over the last decade, no one has come close to matching the playoff win totals of the Spurs and Heat. Since the start of the 2005 playoffs, including the first three rounds this year, San Antonio has a league-best 92 playoff victories, while Miami has won 89 playoff games. No other franchise is even close: The Celtics and Lakers have both won 59 playoff games during that span. Miami has the best playoff winning percentage in the last 10 postseasons, its mark there of .654 just edging San Antonio's mark of .626. There are six teams who

18

don't even have 10 wins in the last 10 years — the Knicks (7), Raptors (6), Bucks (4), Kings (3), Bobcatsnow-Hornets (0) and Timberwolves (not just zero wins, but also zero playoff games played). A LAST BIT OF REST A p p a r e n t l y, t w o d a y s without practice is a standard perk for winning a conference title in the NBA these days. The Heat ousted Indiana on Friday night, then took Saturday and Sunday off to refresh and recharge. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra summoned his team for practice on Monday morning. The Spurs aren't planning to do anything officially basketballrelated until Tuesday. They eliminated Oklahoma City on Saturday night, and had no practices scheduled on either Sunday or Monday — which, if nothing else, figures to give Tony Parker plenty of time to work on improving the condition of his sprained left ankle. Parker sat out the second half of the Spurs' West-clinching win at Oklahoma City because of the ankle problem. RESPECT LEVEL Oh, there will be a high level of physicality in this series, for certain. But something like, say, blowing into an opponent's ear, we can safely dismiss that as a realistic possibility during these NBA Finals. There is genuine respect between the franchises, perhaps best proven by how Spurs coach Gregg Popovich warmly embraced any Heat player or coach he could reach after Game 7 ended a year ago. Frankly, the Heat won't miss the Lance Stephenson-antics — like blowing into LeBron James'

ear — and the endless questions about those moves. “It's an annoyance,” Heat forward Shane Battier said. “It's nice we don't have to deal with that anymore. ... It's about basketball and not all of the chicanery that went on.” MONEY AT STAKE There's $14 million in the league's playoff pool this season, and as if the Heat and Spurs weren't motivated enough by the chance to hold another Larry O'Brien Trophy, there's also some cash at stake. The Spurs are already assured of taking home a total of $3,268,347 from that pool, a figure that would rise to $4,104,811 by winning the NBA championship. Miami will get a payout of $2,795,220 if it does not win the finals, and $3,631,684 if it wins the championship for the third straight year. The pool pays out based on where teams finished in their conference in the regular season, which explains the discrepancy in what the Spurs and Heat have earned so far. There's also a difference of $836,464 in what teams receive for winning or losing the finals.

Cody Walker signs with South Sydney Rabbitohs IN A sign of how gifted he is, 24-year-old Queensland playmaker Cody Walker has knocked back two NRL clubs to sign with South Sydney. Walker has agreed to terms with the Rabbitohs for two years starting next season, rejecting interest from the Melbourne Storm and the Gold Coast Titans. Walker has come of age at the Easts Tigers under Craig Ingebrigtsen and is the rare case of a mid-20s playmaker being chased by NRL clubs. Melbourne tabled what it thought was a competitive offer to keep Walker but it is understood Souths offered significantly more. It is understood the Storm were not happy when told of Wa l k e r ' s d e c i s i o n t o s i g n elsewhere. They have invested in Walker for the past year and while he is yet to play NRL they viewed him as their long-term five-eighth. Melbourne coach Craig

Bellamy typically prefers players spend up to a year in his system before debuting. Walker was expected to see NRL action when he returned from a hamstring complaint this month but that may now be in jeopardy. Bellamy has opted for Ben

Hampton to partner Cooper Cronk at the scrumbase and preferred veteran Ben Roberts to Walker earlier this season. Walker enjoys Melbourne but wants to be closer to his Sydney family. The Rabbitohs have bought the 24-year-old because they need back-up in case the Adam Reynolds and Luke Keary halves combination does not fire next year. Walker will have to fight to earn his spot but the Rabbitohs are concerned Reynolds and Keary's lack of size could be exploited. South Sydney were caught short this year when Keary suffered a pectoral injury on the eve of the season and they had to play centre Dylan Walker in the halves before reverting to John Sutton. The chase for Walker's signature proves how strong the Intrust Super Cup is as a breeding ground for NRL players.

The Eastern Football League is looking into the incident, which occurred at Thursday May 22 training session, Fairfax reported. Parents' complaints prompted the investigation. “An investigation is under way to assess its validity or

22

otherwise,'' Eastern Football League chief executive Phil Murton said. “Once the investigation into the incident is completed, the details will be assessed and any penalties or sanctions will be delivered based on the findings

and in accordance with [league] procedures and rules.” The Rams have not won a game since the first round of the season, and sit last on the ladder. The alleged punishment did not prove beneficial either. Two days after, they lost by 61 points to Doncaster East. Club president Sue Bailey said the club would not be commenting on the incident. “I've got no comment at all. Everything is to go through the eastern football director,'' Bailey said.

Melbourne coach Paul Roos launches satirical attack on prospect of AFL introducing on-field zones MELBOURNE coach Paul Roos has launched a stinging satirical attack on the prospect of the AFL introducing on-field zones. Laws of the Game committee member John Worsfold floated the idea on Monday night as one way of combating congestion on the field. Worsfold told the Seven Network the league could look at trialling a rule in pre-season that keeps two or three players from both sides in each half of the ground. “If you want to play a different game, call it something else and we'll play a different game,” Roos said. “Or we can have two games — we can have Australian Rules footy and another game called zoneball. “It's a great idea.” Roos, who matched wits with Worsfold in classic 2005 and 2006 grand finals between Sydney and West Coast, opined the game had never been in better health and that

coaches had a knack of fixing whatever ailed it. “We were talking about the flood years ago, then that went away,” he said. “We worried about the zones, then they went away. “The game at the moment is as close to 18 one-on-one contests as you can possibly have and we've still got people complaining.” Roos suggested the introduction of two new clubs, and the glut of expansion picks heading to GWS and Gold Coast, meant “the talent level is different” now. “But the game itself has never

been better,” he added. Roos accused the league of being far too reactive in the way they picked at the game's fabric. “The problem is we put rules in. Now we say the rules we put in haven't worked, so we'll put some new rules in,” he said. “We'll do that and put some rules in to fix the rules that were supposed to fix the rules. “Then we'll put some rules in to fix the rules that were going to fix the rules that were going to fix the rules. “We'll keep doing that, that sounds like a great idea.” Roos' freewheeling series of sarcastic zingers came to an end when asked at Tuesday's press conference what he would do if in control of the game. “I wouldn't have changed them (rules),” he said. “I'm just a coach. We're seen as ruining the game so we've got to keep our mouths shut.”

Port Adelaide says it will take a no-risk approach with skipper Travis Boak PORT Adelaide has vowed to take a no-risk approach with injured captain Travis Boak, despite a week on the sidelines possibly costing him a Brownlow Medal. Power fitness coach Darren Burgess says Boak's season will not be put in jeopardy by allowing him to play hurt against St Kilda in Saturday's twilight clash at Adelaide Oval. “We'll keep a close eye on Boaky, yes he played out the game (against Melbourne), but we don't want to run the risk of losing our captain to a serious injury,'' Burgess said after Boak returned from Alice Springs on crutches to protect the right ankle he injured in the opening minute against the Demons. Boak left the field for 10 minutes after having his ankle squashed under an opponent but he returned to be voted best afield, compiling 28 disposals. His standout performance saw his odds for the Brownlow slashed into a season-low $13. Book could have as many as 16 votes from his 10 games, with The Advertiser awarding him the maximum three against Brisbane in round four, Geelong in round six, Hawthorn in round 10 and Melbourne on Saturday. He was voted second-best afield (two votes) against Carlton in round one and Fremantle in round eight. Book is equal-sixth in the line of betting with Collingwood's Dayne Beams behind overwhelming favourite Gary Ablett, from Gold Coast ($1.95), Sydney's Josh Kennedy ($7), Magpie Scott Pendlebury ($8) and Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield and Geelong's Joel Selwood ($11). Boak — like his high-profile counterpart Dangerfield at the Crows — hates missing games but his ankle blew up after the Melbourne match. With Port flying high in top spot and playing a struggling, 16th-placed opponent it should beat easily, the club will be tempted to give its skipper a week off to help ensure his body is in peak condition for the second half of the season. The Power has several injury concerns this week, with speedy midfielder Matthew White (ankle) and star goalsneak Chad Wingard (head knock) also to be monitored at training after being hurt against the Dees. Burgess said he expects Wingard to be available after being on the end of friendly fire from teammate Jay Schulz — a knock which saw him stretchered from Traeger Park and subbed out of the contest. “Chad was up and about after the game, so we think he should be available to play,'' Burgess told the club's website. “But we do need to be careful with concussions, so he'll be carefully monitored during the week.'' White sustained a foot injury and, like Boak, was on crutches after the game and will have to pass a fitness test to

Thorny abortion debate looms in Chile Chilean President Michelle Bachelet is fighting fierce conservative opposition to allow abortion for women and girls who are raped, carrying non-viable fetuses or facing life-threatening pregnancy complications. Last month, a 17-year-old girl turned up at a Santiago public hospital near death from bleeding. A doctor at the hospital called police to report her: she had had a back-alley abortion, which is illegal in Chile. Police searched the girl's home and reported finding bloodstained underwear. Prosecutors say that she is facing 3.5 to five years in prison. In recent years, cases like hers, or that of Belen, an 11-yearold raped by her s t e p f a t h e r, h a v e rocked Chile's traditional and overwhelmingly Roman Catholic society. Others like journalist Monica Perez have to go forward with a pregnancy knowing full well the baby would not live. The socialist president, a pediatrician by training, has announced that she will try in her second term to take on an admittedly taboo issue in one of the few countries where abortion is not permitted under any circumstances. "Chile needs to engage in a mature and informed dialogue... on a bill" in Congress to legalize abortion in cases of rape, risk to the patient's life and non-viable fetuses, Bachelet has said. Bachelet's proposal "includes three situations that are quite extreme, and (most national)

30

laws around the world already include them," said Cristobal Bellolio, an analyst at Universidad Adolfo Ibanez. And despite Chile's resistance to the practice, abortion is part of daily life here. The health ministry estimates that about 150,000 abortions are performed illegally every year in the South American nation of 17 million. And more alarmingly, "every single month, we have three of four women die from abortions" due to illegal and drug-induced

operations, Bachelet said last month on Mega television. Most women in Chile who abort do so by ordering medications online that will cause contractions or disrupt hormonal functions. "The government has to stop this black market, and debate a bill on legal abortion, because we don't want more people dying, or more people misinformed," said Anita Roman of the Matronas association. - Abortion debate this year Before 1989, Chile sometimes allowed abortion when the fetus was not viable or a pregnancy endangered the patient's life. But toward the end of the Augusto Pinochet 1973-1990

dictatorship, it was banned across the board. Divorce was only made legal in Chile in 2004. The Roman Catholic Church, a key political player for decades in Chile that is now losing followers and influence, was outraged by the president's remarks. Santiago Archbishop Ricardo Ezzati said Bachelet would sooner protect pets than human beings, referring to a bill on animal rights repeating a jab made by the president's conservative predecessor Sebastian Pinera. The government has said that debate on the issue will start in Congress before year's end. - Society has evolved "Chilean society has evolved in terms of its values. It has become a better educated s o c i e t y, w i t h m o r e access to information and that is more interested in personal freedoms," Bellolio said. Two years ago, a conservative-held Congress refused to debate abortion reform. Now, Bachelet's political allies hold sway, so the debate will go on, and promises to be thorny. The Christian Democrats for the first time agreed to debate abortion in cases of non-viable fetuses and when the patient's life is in danger, but it was not clear if they would add pregnancies from rape to the list. During her first term in office, Bachelet fought mightily to make available the "morning after" pill, which remains difficult to obtain. That scenario could repeat itself again with potentially legal abortion.

Seattle Dumps Drones over Privacy concerns The Los Angeles Police Department overlooked the controversial nature of the drones and accepted them as a gift from Seattle. LAPD has stated they are reviewing t h e situations in which they will allow drones to be used, and as is typical for t h e department , they claim they will only use them in a situation that poses imminent harm under “narrow and prescribed uses.” The LAPD is refusing to refer to the aircraft as drones, but is calling them “remote controlled aircraft.” The “remote controlled aircraft” are equipped to listen in on personal conversations, deploy infrared video surveillance, and use facial recognition software. Of course, while LAPD is

publicly stating that the aircraft will be used only under a very special set of circumstances, the department can't specify what those circumstances are because

it has no written policy for the use of the aircraft. LAPD has a history of police brutality and corruption. The department has been unable to successfully control its officers while they use something as simple as a baton or a taser. The narrow and prescribed uses the department will eventually adopt, even though they can't currently say what those uses will be, will inevitably be violated. Each

BioMicrobe

violation will cost the taxpayers when the department has to pay to settle the almost certain civil rights lawsuits. An ACLU of Southern California spokesperso n thanked LAPD for being upfront about having obtained the surveillance drones. The L A P D ' s reputation is such that apparently they deserve praise for not lying to the public. The people of Los Angeles need to ask themselves if an organization with that reputation can be trusted with devices that will be able to spy on them in their own homes without a warrant. The government is a child of the people, and this particular child needs to demonstrate that it can correctly and safely use the toys it has before it spends taxpayer dollars maintaining new toys.

Is getting fatter making our feet bigger? British feet are getting longer and wider, experts say. During the last four decades, the average British foot has increased by two shoe sizes, The College of Podiatry says. In 1970, men's feet were on average size eight and women had size four feet, but now the average male wears a size 10 and the average female wears a size six, a spokeswoman says. The increase could be linked to the population's increased weight and height, she added. A new poll conducted by the college found that two-thirds of women claim their feet have got wider in adult life, and 35 per cent said they

have got bigger. And the survey of 2000 British adults found that 48 per cent of men said their feet have got bigger, and 61 per cent said their feet are wider. The college also cautioned that many people are risking foot problems by trying to squeeze their feet into shoes that are too small and narrow.

"Feet are getting bigger because as a nation we are becoming taller and we're increasing in weight," said podiatrist Lorraine Jones from The College of Podiatry. "Increased weight gain places more pressure on the feet and means ligaments and joints need to work harder to maintain the foot's structure and keep you mobile. "Over time, if someone is gaining weight, the feet splay to try and accommodate the increased pressure which can cause pain, lead to mobility issues and increase your risk of developing osteoarthritis in the lower limb joints."

Gates's To Build Nuclear Reactor In Kalimantan TerraPower, a fission firm led by Bill Gates, is mulling a plan to build a modern nuclear reactor in Indonesia. According to reports, government-owned PT Batan Tekno (Persero) pitched the project to the Microsoft cofounder during his visit to Indonesia recently. Persero President, Yudiutomo Imardjoko said TerraPower is considering the project. He said if TerraPower does decide to build the facility, the likeliest site would be Kalimantan, which is less prone from natural disasters such as earthquakes. “The risk of quakes is relatively small and the many

plans to build smelters there would need larger supply of electricity, Antara quoted Yudiutomo as saying. TerraPower is working on a new nuclear reactor that is safer and more sustainable,

and runs on the spent uranium waste of current nuclear power plants. It is reportedly planning to start building its first plant in 2015, and have it operational in the 2020s.

Puppy drives family car into pond A three-month-old puppy ended up in hot water with her owner after driving the family car straight into a pond. G e r m a n shepherd Rosie was a little over enthusiastic following a walk around Bolicar Pond in C a n t o n , Massachusetts, and leapt straight into owner John Costello's car which had its engine turned on. The excited pup hit the gear stick, shifted it into drive and then fell onto the gas pedal sending the vehicle careering into the water.

No-one was hurt in the accident and Mr Costello later said: "The car went for a swim. "We all did." Canton Police Officer Robert Quirk said the car was a write-off after being completely

Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20 'That's the way I like it'. So sang KC and his Sunshine Band. You appear to have clear in your mind what you like and why you like it. This could relate to a particular arrangement with a certain person. They, however, appear to have different ideas about how things should be between you. This week offers a chance to bring about a change to this. Is it what you want? Is it what you need? Be aware of pressure that could be put upon you to change a situation you're comfortable with. If it doesn't suit someone else though, then prepare to have this made clear to you.

Libra Sep 24 - Oct 23 There's nothing quite like pessimism to fuel fires of self protection. If we believe we have reason to be defensive, then pessimism always adds missing elements where negativity is concerned. You might believe you have reason to be pessimistic. This, in turn, could be encouraging you to feel a need to be self protective and focus on a negative instead of positive outcome in some way. This week, you're being encouraged by a kind and caring cosmos to relax. That might sound easier than done but expect a genuine reason to replace pessimism with optimism.

Taurus Apr 21 - May 21 If you sense confusion and uncertainty, then welcome it. Both offer the chance to move from a stale situation and this week, something starts to shift. Through recognizing how long you have coped with feeling confused and uncertain, you appear likely to bring about change that can – and will – dispel both. With change though will come a new level of insecurity. That is something you can cope with. The feeling of reassurance it brings will override any concerns you might have about whether or not you have done little more than perpetuate an ongoing drama.

Scorpio Oct 24 - Nov 22 When we guess certain answers, laws of probability suggest we stand a chance of getting some right. Multiple choice questions, for example, are a good example of this. But when we're expected to create an answer with little or no help or guidance, then likelihood becomes higher that we'll get answers wrong. However, sometimes our instincts kick in to provide help we need. It is your use of instinct that can put you in a strong position to provide an answer to a certain person. You don't need to guess anything this week. Trust your feelings. They won't let you down.

Gemini May 22 - Jun 22 Sometimes, we put too much emphasis on the importance of decisions. We acknowledge change they bring and fear how we might cope with change through altering some aspect of our lives. This week, don't focus so intently on the fact that you are being encouraged to make a decision. Focus instead on how you are opting to seize a particular opportunity. You can be instrumental in bringing about much needed change to a particular area. Whilst it could involve a life changing decision, don't succumb to the belief that it is bigger or more complex than it really is.

Sagittarius Nov 23 - Dec 21 When driving long distances, there are limits to how much we can take into account delays we might encounter. Past experience can play a part. So too, can instinct. However, we're usually better of setting off on our journey allowing plenty of time for any possible delays and seeing what happens. Much the same can be said about a particular plan or venture you're considering. It's time to stop weighing up what might go wrong or what potential complications might be. This week brings a chance for you to commence something that deserves to be commenced.

Cancer Jun 23 - Jul 23 Serendipity is a fancy word for 'chance', the way things 'just happen' and often by surprise. We spend so much time during our lifetimes engineering particular results and outcomes. We don't allow as much as we should do for events to unfold in their own way and time that might be far removed from what we were expecting or pinning hopes on. This week, allow for the possibility that you might be surprised by a turn of events that happen in their own way and give the impression of coming out of the blue. Trust that it's all intended to help, not hinder.

Capricorn Dec 22 - Jan 20 'Where's the catch?' Such words get said by people who believe they have good reason to believe a hidden agenda exists within an arrangement. It's understandable that we should feel a need to exercise caution sometimes. The trouble is though, our keenness to be cautious can work against us in more than one way. This week, avoid a tendency to be overly cautious. Avoid even more a tendency to believe that events from the past play any part in the present now unfolding. It's time to invest a bit more trust in some way. Relax and let some magic enter your world. Aquarius Jan 21 - Feb 19 There's always something reassuring about seeing light at the end of a tunnel. Before we can reach it though, we must experience darkness briefly. You're now in a glorious position where you ought to be focusing solely on light that appears yet you've grown very used to darkness. Whilst it can't be ignored because it still exists, its influence is waning quickly. This week presents a fantastic opportunity for you to recognize how far through darkness you've come and why all that will matter, very soon, is how you're leaving it behind. Soon, there will be something to celebrate.

Pisces Feb 20 - Mar 20 If a situation has dragged on long enough and you've had no choice other than to accept that a particular outcome is guaranteed, then why should you have any reason to feel optimistic? If we tell ourselves something enough times, then we start to believe it. If we're told something enough times by someone we believe to be authoritative or knowledgeable about a particular topic or situation, then we have no reason to doubt what they're saying. In a certain area of your world, you're not only about to discover a reason to feel more buoyant or optimistic, you're also about to discover how much more knowledgeable about it you are than certain others!

Virgo Aug 24 - Sep 23 When we look out of a window each morning, we tend to know how much clothing to wear to protect us from the elements. We recognize what limits might exist in terms of 'overdressing'. With that in mind, in what way might you be overprotecting or overcompensating in some way now? This week brings a chance for you to take stock of a situation that has had its share of tension and how much need exists to continue being defensive and protective toward it. You're likely to understand how your defensiveness has become habitual and is no longer required.

Leo Jun 24 - Aug 23 We are constantly encouraged to invest trust in people and situations. We also encourage others to trust us. Trust can take many forms. It forms the foundation of any close relationship yet ways in which trust is needed on a much more basic level sometimes gets overlooked or ignored. In your world now, there appears to be a need for more trust to be invested in some way on your part – and for you to gain or even win back trust from certain individuals. You have a chance to lead in some way now. This week, do nothing more than be yourself to gain trust you need.

John Farnham

John Peter Farnham AO (born 1 July 1949, Dagenham, East London, England), (formerly billed as Johnny Farnham from his professional debut 1967 until 1980), is an English-born Australian pop singer. Farnham was a teen pop idol from 1964 to 1979, and has since forged a career as an adult contemporary singer. His career has mostly been as a solo artist although he temporarily replaced Glenn Shorrock as lead singer of Little River Band during 1982–1985. In September 1986 his solo single, "You're the Voice" peaked at No. 1 on the Australian singles charts. The associated album, Whispering Jack, held the No. 1 position for a total of 25 weeks, and is the highest-selling album in Australian history. Both the single and the album had Top Ten success internationally including No. 1 in Sweden. Domestically he has remained one of Australia's best-known performers with a career spanning over 45 years, and he is the only Australian artist to have a number one record in five consecutive decades (echoeing that of Cliff Richard in the UK) with singles: "Sadie (The Cleaning Lady)" in 1967, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" in 1969/1970, and "Age of Reason" in 1988 and albums Age of Reason, Chain Reaction in 1990, Then Again... in 1993, Anthology 1: Greatest Hits 1986–1997 in 1997, 33⅓ in 2000 and The Last Time in 2002. Farnham has been recognised by honours and awards including 1987 Australian of the Year, 1996 Officer of the Order of Australia, and 19 ARIA Awards including his 2003 induction into the Hall of Fame. From 1969 he was voted by TV Week readers as the 'King of Pop' for five consecutive years. Aside from his recording career, Farnham performed on stage with lead roles in Australian productions of Charlie Girl, Pippin and 1992's Jesus Christ Superstar. He starred in his own TV series and specials including It's Magic (With Colleen Hewett) and Bobby Dazzler and as a guest on numerous other popular shows such as Countdown and Hey Hey It's Saturday. Australian rock historian, Ian McFarlane described him as "the most successful solo artist in the history of Australian rock and pop Farnham has retained an affable sense of humour and a simple, unpretentious 'everyman' charm which also makes him one of the m o s t respected celebrities in Australian entertainment history.

"Burn For You" Got myself into some trouble tonight Guess I'm just feelin' blue It's been so long Since I've seen your face This distance between me and you That voice you showed me is not the one that I know I must be strong now, in what I do Don't hang up again... Theres nothing else I know how to do But I burn for you What am I gonna do Burn for you I guess it feels like you're always alone And I feel that way too It's so hard to explain to you Please understand what I do I burn for you What am I gonna do I burn for you Burn for you Took my trouble to a bar tonight For another point of view But there's nothing new I'm missing you I burn for you What am I gonna do Burn for you Burn for you I burn for you What am I gonna do I burn for you Burn for you What am I gonna do I burn for you Burn for you Burn...for...you...

Bali Wood Carvings Bali wood carving comes in all different styles Western standards. and themes. Very traditional carvings will mirror the elaborate artwork found in the temples located across the island. Another traditional form of wood carving from Bali includes the use of drift wood and roots that allows the artisan to use the natural shape to enhance the end design. Wood carving takes various forms. There are massive panel designs that are amazingly detailed works of art. Statures and figurines, both large and small, can feature humans, religious figures and animals. Other types of Balinese wood carvings include masks. Many of these masks are used in the various ceremonies that are a major source of entertainment and culture in the area. These masks each tell a story can are very elaborate and often very large and ornate. Many are painted with acrylic or oil based paint and then lacquered to a brilliant finish. Traditional verses modern Like many aspects of Bali there is a very traditional element of artisans that hold true to their roots. There are also artisans that are more geared towards creating export art items. However, both take great pride in their finished products. Traditional artisans and woodworkers tend to add incredible amounts of detail to their carvings. Often these include religious images and themes. These particular carvings may be incredible large by

More modern styles of carving are on the minimalistic side. They feature the grains of the woods in the shape and pattern of the sculptured item. These wood carvings from Bali are popular around the world for their clean lines and balance. Imagination and reality Depending on the woodworker and his or her style, the designs may be highly imaginative or very realistic. All are handmade so they are each just a bit different from the next. Common themes in highly imaginative carvings include dragons, stylized humans, gods and goddesses as well as dancers with ornate costumes and masks. Realistic wood carvings may include a range of different animals. Elephants, snakes, horses, birds and monkeys are icon to the island. You may also find these very real shapes in beautifully stylized pieces, a great combination of imagination and reality. Woods used Depending on the woodworker's preference there are several ideal woods for this highly specialized art. Most carvings will be of teak, jackfruit, balul or baliwood. Tools used are often very simplistic and very traditional, sometimes passed down through families. The range of beauty found in these Bali products is astounding. Having Bali wood carvings on display is a wonderful addition to any home.

"You all have obsessions," the psychologist observed. To the first mother, Mary, he said: "You are obsessed with eating. You've even named your daughter Candy." He turned to the second Mum, Ann: "Your obsession is with money. It manifests itself in your children's names, Penny, Goldie and Frank." He turned to the third Mum, Joyce: "Your obsession is alcohol. This too shows itself in your children's names: Brandy and Sherry. You even called the cat, "Whisky". He then turned to the fourth Mum June: "Your obsession is with flowers. Your girls are called Rose, Daphne & Poppy." At this point, the fifth mother, Kathy, quietly got up, took her little boy by the hand and whispered: "Come on, Dick, this guy has no idea what he's talking about. Let's pick up Fanny and Willy and go home."

Two old Jewish men, Sid and Abe, are sitting in a Mexican restaurant one day. Sid asks Abe,"Do you know if any people of our ancestry were ever born and raised in Mexico?" Abe replies, "I don't know, let's ask our waiter." When the waiter arrives, Abe asks, "Are there any Mexican Jews?" The waiter says, "I don't know senor, I ask the cooks." He returns from the kitchen after a few minutes and says, "No senor, the cook say no Mexican Jews." Abe isn't satisfied and asks, "Are you absolutely sure?" The waiter, realizing he is dealing with "Gringos" replies, "I check once again, senor," and goes back into the kitchen. While the waiter is away, Sid says, "I find it hard to believe that there are no Jews in Mexico. Our people are scattered everywhere." The waiter returns and says, "Senor, the head cook Manuel, he say there is no Mexican Jews." "Are you certain?" Abe asks again. "I just can't believe there are no Mexican Jews!” "Senor, I ask EVERYONE," replies the exasperated waiter. "All we have is Orange Jews, Grape Jews, Prune Jews, Tomato Jews, and Apple Jews, but no Mexican Jews." A policeman spots a black guy dancing on the roof of a car. He radios for backup, saying... "I've got a darkie dancing on a Volkswagen." “You can't say that over the radio." replies the operator "You have to use politically correct terminology.” "OK" he says "Zulu.... Tango.... Golf...."

CURED OF BLINDNESS BY HERPES Baltimore| Wilbert M i l l e r, a w e l l known retired poet and author who suffered all his life from blindness caused by a birth defect, recently started seeing for the first time of his life. It seems he was infected by a very rare type of herpes during a recent trip to France and that the disease miraculously restored his sight. This mutated version of the rather common sexually transmitted disease, caused amongst other things, an alteration of the 71-year old man's cornea. This surprising

symptom somehow seems to have corrected his extreme case of corneal dystrophy, enabling him to see for the first time. “It's absolutely amazing!” says Mister Miller. “I feel like a kid again… I am entirely rediscovering the world. I actually had to learn my colors at 71-years old. Everything is so

beautiful! Who could have thought that a night of great sex with a cheap French prostitute could have helped me enjoy the rest of my life that much? It's really incredible!” The case of the American man has caught the attention a the pharmaceutical industry, that sees in his case, a possible cure for other patients of corneal dystrophy. His specific type of herpes will therefore be thoroughly analyzed to see if this could offer a definite answer to this common problem.

Old News Trivia There is an old Hotel/Pub in Marble Arch, London , which used to have a gallows adjacent to it.. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after a fair trial of course) to be hung. The horse-drawn dray, carting the prisoner, was accompanied by an armed guard, who would stop the dray outside the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like ''ONE LAST DRINK''. If he said YES, it was referred to as ONE FOR THE ROAD. If he declined, that prisoner was ON THE WAGON. So there you go. More bleeding history. They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot and then once a day it was taken and sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were "piss poor", but worse than that were the really poor folk, who couldn't even afford to buy a pot, they "Didn't have a pot to piss in" and were the lowest of the low. The next time you are washing your hands and complain because the water temperature isn't just how you like it, think about how things used to be. Here are some facts about the 1500s: Most people got married in June, because they took their yearly bath in May and they still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to smell, brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water!" Houses had thatched roofs, thick straw piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence

44

the saying "It's raining cats and dogs." There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom, where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence. The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, "dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside.. A piece of wood was placed in the entrance-way. Hence: a thresh hold. (Getting quite an education, aren't you?) In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight, then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme: ''Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot, nine days old''. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over they would hang up their bacon, to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "Bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around talking and ''chew the fat''. Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning and death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous. Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the

middle, and guests got the top, or ''The Upper Crust''. Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of ''Holding a Wake''. England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people, so they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realised they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, thread it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift) to listen for the bell; thus someone could be, ''Saved by the Bell ''or was considered a ''Dead Ringer'' And that's the truth. Now, whoever said history was boring ! ! !
