My capstone project focused on designing a mixed-use residential building near the Marda Loop community at 2015–2001 33 Avenue SW, Calgary, Alberta The design includes commercial space on the ground floor with residential units above and a row of townhomes behind each with private parking for townhomes and underground parking for residential and commercial Our team, driven by the housing crisis and a passion for affordable housing solutions, aimed to create a functional, community-friendly development that blends into the neighborhood.

We faced several challenges, especially working with the site's downhill slope. We used this to our advantage by designing an underground parking that allows car access and direct entry to the residential area, and while cars are going down to the underground parking, the townhouse has its own parking before entering the underground parking, and it is separate from the townhouse It took time and effort to create consistent interior layouts while introducing variety in the townhome floor plans. A key goal was separating the residential and commercial spaces on the same level to avoid conflicts. Despite the challenges, we delivered a strong design that the community could embrace and be proud of

As shown in the image above, On the main floor, our design aligns the commercial space at the front with the townhomes behind it, clearly showing the entrances for both the residential units and the townhomes, along with two emergency exits. All commercial spaces were left open in terms of interior layout, allowing flexibility for future buyers to customize and use them for a variety of purposes.

As shown in the image below, the upper levels from Level two to Level four are dedicated to residential units These levels feature a diverse mix of 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom, and 3-bedroom units, arranged in thoughtfully planned layouts that repeat across each floor In total, there are 35 residential units between Level two and Level four

ELEVATIONS

Our project aims to foster a strong sense of community among families from diverse backgrounds. To achieve this, we carefully crafted a design that balances modern elements with familiar, community-focused touches, appealing to a wide range of preferences. Our approach integrated brick and composite metal panels to blend contemporary aesthetics with the warmth of natural materials, ensuring the building fits seamlessly with others in the area

Recognizing the significance and lasting nature of the Marda Loop community, we designed the building with long-term relevance in mind envisioning it to remain suitable and appealing for the next 50 to 60 years Features like regular railings on balconies reflect the existing neighborhood style, preserving the area's character rather than disrupting it The combination of solid brickwork and carefully placed metal panels enhances the design, complementing the community's taste while making a subtle architectural statement

Our building structure is designed to support the weight of the metal panels and brick exterior using a full concrete system It begins with a pile foundation that connects to the main floor slab, transitioning into a transfer slab at Level 1 From there, reinforced concrete columns extend all the way to the roof, ensuring strength, stability, and long-term structural integrity.

These detailed sections reflect the careful thought and precision I dedicated to the design process over the course of the semester

The Residential Floor to Balcony Connection at Level 3. I chose this section to illustrate the critical interface between the interior floor slab and the exterior balcony It highlights key components like the slope for water drainage, insulation, waterproofing, and material transitions This detail was important to include because it demonstrates how the design addresses thermal bridging, water management, and acoustic separation ensuring both comfort and durability for residents

SS-FOUNDATION @ RAINSCREEN DETAILS

The focuses on the SS-Foundation @ Rainscreen Detail. This section was selected to show how the exterior wall system integrates with the building's concrete foundation at ground level. It clearly outlines the layers of rigid and batt insulation, vapor and air barriers, metal cladding attachment, and flashing. This detail is essential to the building’s energy efficiency and moisture protection, and it also ensures the rainscreen system aligns visually and functionally with the upper levels of the structure.

My Semester 3 project focused on designing a mixed-use commercial building located at 6336 Bowness Road NW, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The project features a three-story structure, incorporating groundfloor commercial spaces with upper-level office units.

This semester, I explored the fundamentals of steel framing construction, immersing myself in its techniques and structural principles. I also gained in-depth knowledge of both bypass and infill wall systems, understanding how they function within a steel-framed building. Additionally, I studied three distinct cladding systems lightweight metal panels, heavyweight brick, and curtain walls each offering unique performance and aesthetic qualities. This hands-on learning experience gave me a comprehensive insight into modern commercial construction practices.

My Semester 2 project focused on designing a mixed-use residential building located in the community of West Hillhurst at 217 19 Street NW, Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The project features a two-story structure, incorporating ground-floor commercial spaces with upper-level residential units

Throughout the semester, I developed proficiency in using Revit to produce comprehensive drawing sets The design utilized wood-frame construction, supported by concrete elements for the floors and foundation. Additionally, I explored the National Building Code, with a focus on fire ratings, exit requirements, and the specifications of wall and floor assemblies including their R-values to ensure the building met performance and safety standards
