About Us: Our Mission Through community and campus partnerships, the Center for Service Learning advances service-learning, community-engaged scholarship, and civic engagement that fosters a commitment to participation for a diverse, just, and global society. The CSL offers services and support to students, faculty, departments, community engagement professionals, and community partners to advance the interests and commitment of the university in promoting public service, community and civic engagement. We envision an interconnected community in which all students, faculty, staff, and community partners mutually benefit by collectively addressing societal issues. The Center for Service Learning, as stated in our mission, is committed to participation in creating a diverse, just, and global society. Allyship and cultural competence are important aspects of effective and inclusive engagement with and in our communities. It is important to collaboratively work towards assuring conditions that support equity, particularly for communities and groups who may have a history and increased likelihood of experiencing marginalization. For more information on allyship and cultural competence, click here. The CSL acknowledges that the University of Kansas resides on the ancestral territory of several tribal nations, including the Kaw, Osage, and Shawnee peoples. Specifically, the University occupies land taken from these nations. In addition, we recognize, advocate, and support the sovereignty of the four-federally recognized tribes of Kansas, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas, the Sac and Fox Nation of Missouri in Kansas and Nebraska and the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska.

About Us: What is Service Learning? “Service Learning” is the combination of course content and creating an experience for students to address a community identified need into one academic experience. These aspects of the course are tied together with reflection. Service Learning Courses integrate service learning directly into your academic coursework, allowing you to apply what you learn in a real-world setting. Studies show that “learning by doing” is one of the most effective ways to truly learn and retain material taught in a class. Try out a service learning course and experience it for yourself! Some examples of service learning courses at KU are: ABSC 150/151: Community Leadership COMS 342: Problem Solving in Teams and Groups C&T 235: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in K-12 Education MEMT 150: Introduction to Music Therapy UNIV 492: Special Projects in the Community

Visit csl.ku.edu/eligible-courses-1 to learn more about the service learning courses offered at KU!

Programs + Initiatives: Pathways to Service The Pathways to Service describe the variety of ways people can use their knowledge, skills, and talents to improve their communities. Many of these pathways overlap, allowing you diverse experiences to help you determine which pathways are the best fit for you.

For more information about the Pathways to Service, visit csl.ku.edu/pathways-service. 6

Programs + Initiatives: Certificate in Service Learning The Certificate in Service Learning (CSL) recognizes your experiences in utilizing your classroom skills to meet communityidentified needs. Earning the certificate involves taking classes, engaging in volunteer work, and reflecting on your service learning experiences. Steps to Earn the Certificate 1. Register for the certificate through the myKU Portal. Log in and select the “Undergraduate Certificates” link under the “Academics” tab. 2. Complete Service 101, our online service orientation module. Resources to help you complete this component are available on the CSL website. After reviewing the online resources, you will need to respond to some reflection questions, which will be available on your service learning certificate record in myKU Portal. 3. Take 1 Service Learning Course + 1 Social Awareness Course. Eligible courses for each are located on the CSL website. 4. Complete 60 hours of service. Service hours from your service learning class count toward this requirement. Additional hours may be completed through a variety of activities, such as participating in an Alternative Break or volunteering with a CCO program. 5. Complete Certificate Reflection and submit it in the MyKU Portal. 6. Apply for Graduation from the certificate program in Enroll and Pay.

Programs + Initiatives: UNIV 492- Special Projects in the Community UNIV 492 Local is a 2-credit hour, online course that requires 40 hours of service work and fulfills Core Goal 5.2. Service hours must be done in the local U.S. community where the student resides or attends KU. Course content of UNIV 492 Local deepens students’ understanding of service work by introducing knowledge and skills needed to carry out effective and ethical volunteer efforts. Students are asked to critically examine the benefits and potential harm of service, consider social constructs of power and privilege, become familiar with the nonprofit sector, research systemic causes for specific social issues, define how they can act as an ally, and critically reflect on self and society.

For more information about UNIV 492, please reach out to the CSL at csl@ku.edu.
